Il est également essentiel d'incorporer un dispositif permettant de réaliser les rainures successives d'une mèche dans une relation angulaire de phase bien dé terminée l'une par rapport à l'autre. Ce dispositif est désigné communément par mécanisme diviseur ou mécanisme d'indexage . La présente invention a pour objet une machine pour former des cannelures hélicoïdales dans une pièce à usiner de section circulaire, caractérisée par le fait qu'elle comprend un support rotatif pour la pièce à usiner, une meule pivotant autour d'un axe perpendiculaire à l'axe de ce support rotatif;
Machine tool for forming helical splines in a workpiece The invention relates to a machine for forming helical splines in a workpiece of circular section, this machine allows the machining of a suc cession of two or more of these helical splines in a workpiece, uniformly angularly offset with respect to each other, that is to say in the arrangement commonly called multiple starts.
One use of such a machine tool is machining the splines of helical bits by subjecting a rotating workpiece to a rotary grinding operation in which the surface of the workpiece is in contact with the periphery. grinding wheel and machining each flute completely in a single pass operation. The workpiece is generally pre-quenched to a sufficient degree of hardness that no quenching of the material is subsequently required for the production of finished bits.
In such machine tools, to form the helical splines of the helical bits, it is essential to provide a device whose function is to produce a determined relative movement between the rotating grinding wheel and the workpiece in which the splines are to be cut, this movement being a combination of two distinct components, one of which is a longitudinal rectilinear movement along the axis of the part to be machined and the other a rotation around the axis of this part to be machined. It is the combination of these two movements that gives the splines the desired helical characteristics.
It is also essential to incorporate a device making it possible to produce the successive grooves of a wick in a well-defined angular phase relationship with respect to one another. This device is commonly referred to as a divider mechanism or an indexing mechanism. The present invention relates to a machine for forming helical splines in a workpiece of circular section, characterized in that it comprises a rotary support for the workpiece, a grinding wheel pivoting about an axis perpendicular to the the axis of this rotary support;
means for driving the rotary support in successive cycles of alternating axial movements in which each advance stroke is performed at constant speed, while the return stroke is performed at higher speed, a cog connecting the rotary support to the drive means, a drive unit for this cog,
this drive unit being continuously rotating in one direction and this train being adapted to produce phase displacements between the rotation of the rotary support and its alternating movement at each successive cycle, this train causing a rotation of the rotary support for one year predetermined gle different from 360o during each complete cycle of this alternating movement,
the whole arranged so as to give to the rotary support a combined movement of back and forth and of rotation with respect to the periphery of the grinding wheel with a view to the machining by this grinding wheel of distinct successive helical grooves in a workpiece carried by the rotary support, means being provided to keep the workpiece out of engagement with the grinding wheel during the return stroke of the rotary support.
In a particular embodiment of the machine, the rotary support of the workpiece, as well as the drive means of this support, the gear train as well as the driving unit of this gear, can be mounted on a sliding carriage. and oscillating, this carriage being adapted to slide alternately under the action of the drive means, means being provided to cause this carriage to tilt upwards during its return stroke, so as to keep the part at bay. machine out of engagement with the grinding wheel.
The grinding wheel is preferably mounted below the workpiece, so that it can be adjusted by pivoting below this workpiece and around the vertical axis of its pivot and below the axis of the workpiece. machine to cut helical splines on the left or right as desired, the drive unit for worm and tangent wheel drives being reversible.
The appended drawing illustrates schematically and by way of example an embodiment of the machine according to the invention.
Fig. 1 is a partial sectional elevation of one embodiment of the machine tool for machining helical splines of helical drill bits.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of FIG. 1.
Referring to the drawings, the machine tool com takes a fixed and rigid frame 10 on the upper face of which a slide 11 is adapted to slide longitudinally in guides in the form of an eagle tail (not illustrated) of known shape.
The slide 11 supports a carriage 12 pivoted at its rear end on the slide by means of transverse articulation pins 13 and is carried at its front end by load pads 14 of the slide on which the legs 15 of the carriage can. rest. The carriage has front and rear bearings 16, 17 respectively, arranged in line on the longitudinal axis.
The front bearing 16 carries an axis 18 actuating a clamping mandrel 19 carrying a workpiece 20 on the front end of the axis. The front end of the frame 10 is extended to form a platform 21 for a table 22 supporting an assembly 23 carrying a grinding wheel 24 and an electric motor 25 for driving this grinding wheel.
The table 22 is adjustable by horizontal pivoting on the platform around a vertical pivot 26 carried by this platform and whose axis is perpendicular to, and intersects the axis of the workpiece. The grinding wheel 24 is arranged on the table 22 so that its horizontal axis is located near the workpiece, so that the periphery of this grinding wheel can be presented to this workpiece for the purpose of rectifying the latter.
The axis of the grinding wheel passes through the axis of the pivot 26, so that this grinding wheel can be adjusted by means of the table 22, so as to bring the plane of the grinding wheel to a desired angle with respect to the axis of the part to be machined in order to rectify right or left splines, as desired by simply adjusting the table 22 around the pivot 26.
To fix the table 22 in the desired position, corresponding to the adjustment of the position of the grinding wheel 24 relative to the workpiece 20, a slot 27 is made in the platform 21 around the pivot 26 and one or more Clamping bolts 28 pass through the table and is engaged in this slot 27. The grinding wheel 24 is adjustable in height in its support 23 by means of a mechanism (not shown) controlled by a crank 29.
The grinding wheel 24 is driven by means of a belt 30, by an electric motor 25, the position of which is adjustable on the table 22. By means of adjusting screws 31 passing through a cleat 32, fixed on this table, and connected by a screw device with a base plate 33 of the motor 25.
The dotted lines 34 in FIG. 2 illustrate a possible position of the grinding wheel 24 for machining a right-hand helix in a workpiece. A scale or any other indicating device (not illustrated) may be provided to facilitate the adjustment of the grinding wheel to the desired position. The shaft 18 for the rotation of the workpiece 20 is driven by a hydraulic motor 35, mounted on the carriage 12, by means of an axis 36 carrying a worm 37 engaged with a wheel tangent 38 fixed to the rear end of shaft 18. By this means, the workpiece is rotated.
The longitudinal movement of the workpiece is controlled by the rotation in the rear bearing 17 of a shaft 39 and the corresponding cam 40. A cam groove 41 is made in the cylindrical surface of the cam and a follower 42 fixed on the frame 10 is engaged in this groove. The rotation of the cam 40 thus causes the back and forth movement of the slide with respect to the frame 10, as well as of the carriage 12 pivoted on this slide at 13.
Interconnection means are provided between the shafts 18, 39 to control the helical displacement resulting from the workpiece 20, the axis 36 of the worm extending through the carriage 12 and carrying at its free end a first pinion 43. An axis 44 parallel to the axis of the worm 36 carries a second pinion with straight teeth 45 in engagement with the first pinion 43 and driving the shaft 39 in rotation by means of a worm 46 and a tangent wheel 47.
As can be seen from the drawings, the cam groove 41 is so arranged that a relatively slow translational movement is transmitted to the workpiece during the feed stroke and this movement is followed. by a relatively quick return stroke. The machine tool is so arranged that the workpiece is in contact with the grinding wheel only during the advance stroke of its reciprocating motion, an auxiliary cam 48 being disposed so as to come into contact with it. a stop 49 fixed on the frame 10 during the return stroke, thus causing the upward tilting of the carriage around its articulation 13 relative to the slide 11 and to lift the part out of engagement with the grinding wheel.
The position of the carne 40 near the articulation 13 has the effect of not releasing the follower 42 when the carriage is lowered; the surface of the cam could also be reloaded so as to avoid any reduction in the bearing surface between it and the follower during this part of the movement. Where desired, instead of using an auxiliary cam 48, the end of the cam groove 41 can be constructed such that the follower 42 rocks the carriage 12 during its return stroke.
The pinions with straight teeth 43, 45 of the intermediate drive means or gear train are arranged so as to be interchangeable so that the ratio of the number of revolutions of the shafts 18, 39 can be changed easily.
This makes it possible to change, as desired, the angular phase relationships of the successive helical grooves of a workpiece and / or the total number of revolutions of this workpiece for each cycle of reciprocating motion. For example, for a type of arrangement with two feeders the rotation ratio of shafts 18, 39 is equal to /., So that for each cycle of native alter movement the workpiece rotates by 540, that is, dire makes a revolution and a half so that the second helical groove of the pair will automatically be machined in a position 180o out of phase with the first.
In the following examples, it will be considered that the intermediate gear train drive means are formed in such a way that this ratio of 3: 2 between the number of revolutions of the shafts 18, 39 is obtained when the ratio of the pinions 43, 45 is equal to unity. In this case, other particularly useful two-start spline ratios can be obtained by using pin ratios of 3 / s, '/ 7 and i / 3. The number of teeth of the pinions 43, 45 respectively for each of the four ratios can therefore be 20 and 20, 15 and 25, 12 and 28, 12 and 36.
Each pair of pinions can be designed to have the same center distance using only two different tooth sizes, for example the sizes 10 DP and 12 DP, the second dimension being necessary only in the case of the last ratio listed above.
The ratios mentioned would give workpiece rotations of 540, 900, 1260o and 1620 respectively for each cycle of alternating motion. In each case, the rotation is 180 greater than a number of complete revolutions.
By introducing further changes in the ratios of the two spur gears, it is possible to form further helical multi-part grooves in a workpiece. For example if the number of teeth of pinions 43 and 45 are 18 and 40 respectively, the workpiece will rotate by 1200, that is to say by three revolutions and a third at each cycle of alternating movement and thus an arrangement corresponding to a type of helical groove with three outlets.
Similarly for a four start arrangement, a ratio of 12 to 26 teeth will give three and a quarter revolutions per cycle; for an arrangement with five starts, a ratio of 15 to 32 teeth will give three and a fifth of a revolution per cycle and for an arrangement with six starts, a ratio of 18 to 38 will give three revolutions and a sixth per cycle.
Other reports than those listed can obviously be formed as desired. In the case of bits longer than the standard, in which the length of each helical groove must in particular be greater than three times the pitch of the groove, it is necessary to rotate the workpiece at least four full revolutions. in addition to the angle required to produce the desired phase difference between each altered cycle of motion.
The examples described and given above are, however, sufficient to indicate how each desired spline arrangement can be achieved.
In order to be able to use pairs of straight pins having the required number of teeth with a single center distance, it may be preferable to provide at least some of these pairs with a helical rather than a straight cut. If this can facilitate the economic production of gears, by using standard tools available to gear manufacturers.
A machine tool as described can be adapted to form both left and right propellers. To adapt the illustrated embodiment to the formation of a left-hand helix, the inclination of the axis of the grinding wheel 24 with respect to the axis of the workpiece and the rotation of the hydraulic motor 35 are reversed and the cam 40 is replaced by a similar cam but in the opposite direction.
It is possible to use the same cam for the two propeller directions without taking into account the differences between the advance and recoil displacement that it generates if the insertion of an intermediate gear between the pinions with straight teeth 43 and 45 when the other direction of the helix is desired.
The sequence of operations can be controlled by electrical limit switches (not shown).
