Abstract

951,782. Grinding helical flutes. ARTHUR BALFOUR & CO. Ltd. July 4, 1961 [July 5, 1960], No. 23433/60. Heading B3D. A grinding machine for producing helical flutes in a workpiece 20 comprises a grinding- wheel 24 pivotally adjustable about a pivot 26 on a base 10, a slide 11 mounted on the base for reciprocation to and from the grinding-wheel, a carriage 12 pivoted at 13 on the slide for up and down tilting movement, a rotary work-holder 19 mounted in the carriage, cam-and-follower means 40, 42 for reciprocating the slide, means for tilting the carriage during movement of the slide away from the grinding-wheel so as to lift the workpiece from the latter, and means for driving the cam means and rotating the workpiece in timed relation thereto. The grinding wheel 24 and its belt-drive unit 25 are together mounted on a table 22 which is adjustable about the pivot 26, a screw 28 being provided for clamping the latter in position after inclining the grinding-wheel, left or right, to cut at the required helix angle. The slide 11 is reciprocated by a cam drum 40 having a feed and quickreturn groove 41 engaged by a follower 42 on the base 10. Upward tilting of the carriage on the return movement of the slide is effected by either a projection 48 on the drum contacting an abutment 49 on the slide or the suitable building up of the bottom of the cam groove 41. An hydraulic motor 35 drives a shaft 18 operating the workholder 19 and also the cam-shaft 39 through worm gears 37, 38 and 46, 47 interconnected by change gears 43, 45. The latter gears are selected according to the desired ratio of speed of the shafts 18, 39 and hence the desired angular relationship of successive flutes in the workpiece; for example, the ratio of the angular velocities of the shafts 18, 39 may be 3 : 2 so that for each reciprocation the workpiece rotates through 540 degrees and the second flute will be automatically formed 180 degrees out of phase with the first. To adapt the machine from the production of left-hand to right hand helices, it is necessary to reverse the inclination of the grinding-wheel 24 to the workpiece and the rotation of the hydraulic motor 35, and the same cam 40 may be used provided the arrangement permits the insertion of an idler gear between the gears 43, 45.
