1,253,361. Chamfering toothed gears; machine tool details. PRECISION GEAR MACHINES & TOOLS Ltd. 18 April, 1969 [18 April, 1968], No. 18494/68. Headings B3B and B3K. A machine tool for chamfering the ends or edges of gear teeth comprises a work spindle 16 arranged for reciprocation towards and away from an adjacent cutter spindle assembly 31 and for intermittent or continuous rotation in timed relation with its reciprocatory movement. The cutter spindle assembly 31 is angularly adjustable on a cutter head 20 which is horizontally adjustable on a slideway on a cutter beam member 11 which is itself vertically adjustable on a column 12, the latter in turn being adjustable on a slideway 14 towards the work spindle 16. Reciprocation of the work spindle 16 is effected by a rotary cam (93) and follower (91), (Figs. 4, 5, not shown) serving to oscillate a rocker shaft (71) having a rocker arm (70) engaging the spindle 16 while a Geneva mechanism (101, 102), driven from the cam-shaft (94) is connected through spur-type change gearing (108) either to a worm and worm-wheel drive (105, 60, Figs. 3 and 6, not shown) or to a bevel gear drive (203, 209, Figs. 10, 11, not shown) for rotating the spindle 16 intermittently in timed relation to retraction of the work spindle. In the case in which the spindle 16 is driven by bevel gearing a cam operated brake (Figs. 11, 13, 14, not shown) comprising two spring loaded brake shoes (230, 231) surrounding a brake surface on the periphery of one of the gears (209) holds the spindle against rotation except during indexing. If the work spindle 16 is to be rotated continuously the Geneva mechanism is replaced by direct gearing of required ratio. Two cutter spindle assemblies may be mounted on the cutter beam 11 the drive shaft 24 extending (Fig. 9, not shown) through the first to a female splined terminal portion from which drive may be taken to the second assembly. The work spindle 16 may be mounted for rotation and reciprocation in plain bush bearings or in linear and rotary ball bearings (220, 222, Fig. 12, not shown).
