<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

A method of manufacturing an industrial or agricultural fork and forming the blank and the finished fork.
The present invention relates firstly to a process for manufacturing an industrial or agricultural fork with tapered tines or prongs, and in this connection it consists of. employs, for the manufacture of forks with four or more prongs, a blank in which the pronged part has a recess corresponding to the part forming the socket of another blank and in that, of the two pronged parts as well formed, the tapered prongs are stretched by rolling without prior division.
One can advantageously use a blank which has openings at * places where a subdivision of the pronged part is to be made, these openings preferably being formed as soon as the blank is cut.
The transverse profile of the prongs advantageously has a U-shape such that at the flat base of the U the prongs have their maximum width. This cross-sectional profile is important both for the rolling of the forks and for the use of the finished forks.
However, the invention also relates to a fork with tapered prongs, in which the latter have an approximately U-shaped cross section, the maximum width of the prongs being at the flat base.
Finally, a further subject of the invention is the formation of the blank, which has, between the pronged parts, a recess corresponding to the part forming the sleeve of another blank and, at the places where the pronged parts. must be subdivided, holes which ensure both greater ease of rolling and the direct and exact formation of the cross member carrying the prongs.
In the appended drawing, which shows the invention by way of example: FIG. 1 represents a blank according to the invention, FIG. 2, the same blank after the rolling of the tines, FIG. 3, a section along line 3 -3 of figure 2.
In these figures, a1 and a2 denote the parts of the blank from which the prongs are formed by rolling. By b1 and b2 are designated holes cut in the parts
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
a1 and a2. By c is designated the part forming the socket. The blank, as shown in FIG. 1, is cut from a strip of metal of, for example, 10 mm. thick and 100 mm. of width. It will be noted that the part removed between the pronged parts has the same shape as the part forming the socket, so that the blanks can be cut, to the shape shown, successively and without any waste other than that caused by the formation. holes b1 and b2.
The shape of the blanks, except for the holes b1 and b2, is already known mainly for the forks and pickaxes with two prongs, in which the two prongs are then stretched separately by forging.
Figure 2 shows the same blank after the stretching of the forked portion by rolling, usefully in a so-called reversible rolling mill, so as to obtain at the locations of the cutting line 3-3 a shaped body which has, in section transverse, the shape shown in Figure 3. This laminating, or stretching by rolling, can be performed in one or more successive passes, passing the workpiece several times between the same rolls, until the prongs have acquired the desired length.
The various prongs d1, d2, d3, d4 have in cross section essentially a U-shape which has the maximum width at its base. Barbs f remain between the tines after milling, these barbs can be easily sheared by means of a suitable press.
It suffices that only one of the rolls of the rolling mill is profiled, the counter roll being able to be smooth. The cylinders have the usual semi-cylindrical shape.
After rolling and deburring, the cross member and the forks are brought, by dressing, to their final shape. It can be seen that, with the blank shape chosen, the length of the outer prongs is precisely that which is required, because the prongs must be curved outwards. With the shape chosen for the cross section of the tines, the deburring of the tines is done in an irreproachable manner. The tines have a wide base, so that in use they wear less than when they have another shape.
The waste is extremely small, because it is formed only by the barbs and by the cutouts of the two holes b1 and b2.
The construction described is mainly suitable for manure forks. Rolling stretching of the fork tines of this kind has previously been carried out, but in this case the cross section of the tines had another shape, namely, an oval-pointed shape. With this oval-pointed shape of the cross-section, deburring is extremely difficult. The blank which has hitherto been used for the manufacture of forks of this kind was constituted by a closed strip of sheet metal, in the middle part of which the part forming the sleeve of another blank was not not hollowed out and which did not have holes corresponding to holes b1 and b2.
The recess, corresponding to the part forming the sleeve of another blank, which is provided between the pronged parts a1 and a2, allows the barbs to spread out without obstacle towards the middle. By providing the holes b1 and b2, moreover, it is possible to give the crosspiece directly the exact shape and to avoid applying at this point subsequent manipulations which must be resorted to, otherwise, already at the time of stretching by rolling.
