NOUVEAUX PERFECTIONNEMENTS AU SIDE CAR DES
MOTOCYCLETTES
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
Ces deux logements communiquent entre eux par une ouverture taraudée à travers laquelle passe une tige filetée dont l'une extrémité vient se fixer dans une pièce cylindrique pouvant glisser à l'intérieur du premier logement du ma.nchon, cette pièce cylindrique étant pourvue d'un levier extérieur solidaire de la tige, tandis que l'autre extrémité de la tige est formée d'une bille sphérique sur laquelle viennent s'emboîter de chaque côté les évidements de deux mâchoires qui peuvent cou- lisser dans le second logement ; deux mâchoires portent à leur autre extrémité d'autres évidements qui peuvent agripper un champignon généralement de forme sphérique fixé de façon appro- priée sur le cadre de la motocyclette ;

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
S, monté sur le tube longeron du châssis du side-ca.r; dans la ca- vité se place un bouchon-tampon en caoutchouc 0 contre lequel se place la rotule K de la tige J. L'autre extrémité de la tige file- tée peut se visser à volonté au moyen du levier HI qui est fixé sur sa partie inférieure dans le tube fileté V , ce dernier étant solidaire d'un axe Y pourvu d'un levier de serrage H2;

NEW DEVELOPMENTS AT SIDE CAR OF
MOTORCYCLES
The present invention relates to various improvements to the side car of motorcycles. It is mainly characterized by a new wheel system independent of the side car, by a new device for attaching the chassis of the side car to the motorcycle, allowing the immediate placement or removal of it by hand, without the using no key and finally by an articulated device for manual adjustment to give the machine the degree of camber of the side car at will.
The independent wheel coming within the scope of this invention is characterized essentially by the use of a balance one end of which is mounted on the axle of the side car wheel, the other end being provided with a bucket which contains a vertical spring fixed on the other hand on an adjustable member placed on a part fixed to the outer side member of the sidecar frame; this balance can oscillate around an axis supported by a fork integral with a part fixed to both the
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
outer and rear frame members.
The new device for attaching the sidecar frame to the machine, which is placed at each end of the frame, motorcycle side, is characterized by the fact that it consists essentially of a piece in the form of a sleeve. , uquel is connected a tube which fits into the frame member, said sleeve being formed on the other hand by two housings of generally cylindrical form.
These two housings communicate with each other by a threaded opening through which passes a threaded rod, one end of which is fixed in a cylindrical part which can slide inside the first housing of the ma.nchon, this cylindrical part being provided with an external lever integral with the rod, while the other end of the rod is formed by a spherical ball on which fit on each side the recesses of two jaws which can slide in the second housing; two jaws have at their other end other recesses which can grip a mushroom generally of spherical shape fixed in a suitable manner on the frame of the motorcycle;
between the two jaws is internally towards their center a small spring the purpose of which is to move them apart when the jaws are removed from the housing. The jaws being introduced into the second housing of the sleeve so that the outer recesses cover the spherical mushroom of the frame of the machine, it will be understood that by actuating in the desired direction the threaded rod passing through the two housings through the threaded opening between the two, this, through its spherical end will exert a traction on the jaws which will have the effect of attracting the fungus of the machine frame towards the inside of the sleeve and at the same time ensuring the clamping of the jaws and sleeve on the mushroom.
Finally, the articulated adjustment device ensuring in the desired manner and by hand the degree of camber from the sidecar to the motorcycle consists of a strut consisting essentially of a cylindrical rod, one end of which is shaped. ball joint, the other end being threaded and engaging
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
giant in an internally threaded cylindrical tube, said tube being mounted on an axis provided with a lever which ensures either the clamping of the tube on a fixed part integral with the frame of the motorcycle, or its removal by hand.
The end of the cylindrical rod provided with its ball joint engages with hard friction in the upper cavity of a clamping collar lined internally with a compressed rubber stopper serving as a buffer, said collar being fixed in an appropriate manner on the inner side member tube of the side-car frame. A lever clamped on the threaded rod at its lower part ensures by its rotation in the desired direction the extension or the narrowing of the strut according to the desired degree of camber.
By way of non-limiting example, the figures of the drawing represent an embodiment of the invention.
Figures I and 2 show respectively in elevation and in section the device for attaching the sidecar frame to the machine. The sleeve part A is formed by the housings LI and L 2 also comprising the tube T which is connected to the side member the sidecar frame; threaded rod G passes through the threaded opening Z between the two housings, 'one end of this carrying the clamping lever H is fixed on the internal cylindrical part f which slides in the housing LI, while the other end ends in the shape of a spherical ball F located in the housing L2 ;; this ball is clamped between the internal recesses of the jaws m which, on the other hand, embrace by their external recesses the spherical mushroom C fixed in an appropriate manner on the frame of the motorcycle.
It will be understood that by tightening the lever H in the desired direction, the ball F will exert traction through the jaws' "m on the mushroom C thereby ensuring the energetic tightening thereof to the sleeve A. In this way it will be possible by hand and without the aid of any key or tool to immediately secure or remove the sidecar to the motorcycle, this clamping device being placed at each end of the inner side member of the chassis of the motorcycle. sidecar.
In fig. 3 and 4, there is shown in elevation and in plan the independent wheel system of the side-car.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
The balance B by one of its ends is shown on the axle N of the wheel of the side-car; is fixed by a fork on the rear and outer side member tubes Ta, and T of the sidecar frame by means of part M. The bala.n- cier pivots around the axis I resting on a fork of the upper part of part M; the other end of part B is fitted with a bucket G serving as a housing for a vertical coil spring R. This spring is fixed to a part Q whose position is adjustable by means of screw i, this being fixed as well as Q on the part P which is fixed to the spar tube T by appropriate means.
A rubber belt D fixed on the one hand near the spring on the balance and on the other hand on the lower leg of the part P absorbs the jolts coming from the wheel rolling on uneven pavement, as well as the vibrations. - tions and prevents them from spreading to the sidecar frame and to the motorcycle.
Fig. 5 shows the articulated adjustment device ensuring by hand and in the desired manner the camber of the sidecar to the motorcycle. It consists of a threaded rod J, one end of which is formed by a spherical ball K engaging with hard friction in the upper cavity of a hose clamp
S, mounted on the side member frame tube of the side-ca.r; a rubber buffer stopper 0 is placed in the cavity against which the ball joint K of the rod J is placed. The other end of the threaded rod can be screwed as desired by means of the lever HI which is fixed on its lower part in the threaded tube V, the latter being integral with an axis Y provided with a clamping lever H2;
this axis is suitably fixed on the branches of a fork constituting the end of a fixing tube integral with the frame of the motorcycle (see FIG. 6). To obtain the desired degree of camber between the sidecar and the motorcycle, it will suffice to act in the desired direction on the lever HIfixed on the threaded rod, so as to obtain the extension or the reduction of the strut. . The threaded rod-threaded tube system is covered with a hollow external protection tube X.
Finally, in Figure 7 there is schematically shown the

seems to be the frame of the sidecar provided on the one hand with the independent wheel system, falling within the scope of the invention and on the other hand with the two devices for fixing the frame to the motorcycle as well as the attached adjustment strut usually to parts connected to the frame of the motorcycle under the saddle.
