Process for the preparation of N-substituted aminocarboxylic acids.
It has been found according to the present invention that N-substituted aminocarboxylic acids can be prepared by reacting nitrogenous organic compounds, containing hydrogen combined with nitrogen and substitutable with metal, in the form of their combinations with alkali metals or with alkaline earth metals, particularly in the form of their sodium or potassium compounds, with? '- lactones. By using metal combinations, it is also possible to react nitrogen compounds which, by themselves, do not react with lactones.
As suitable nitrogen compounds there may be mentioned, for example, Ó-pyrrolidone, indol, carbazol, uric acid and its derivatives. In addition, sulfonamides can be used, for example p-toluenesulfamide, butanedisulfodiamide and sulfonamides derived from sulfochlorides obtainable by the treatment of paraffinic hydrocarbons with sulfur dioxide and with chlorine, advantageously under irradiation with light at low wavelength. When starting from sulfonamides, one obtains aminocarboxylic acids substituted on nitrogen by the radical of sulfonic acid.
,
Suitable Ó-lectones are Ó-butyrolactone, Ó-valerolactone and their higher counterparts.
The reaction is carried out by heating, with the lactone, the combinations of the organic nitrogen compounds with the alkali or alkaline earth metals, for example potassium Ó-pyrrolidone, potassium indol, potassium carbazol, sodium p-toluenesulfamide, disodium butanedisulfamide. The choice of temperature depends in each case on the reaction power of the substances used. In some cases reaction begins already at room temperature. But most often we work at increased temperatures, preferably between 150 and 200. An excess of lactone is usefully employed which acts as a solvent and which can be recovered after the reaction by distilling it off.
It is possible to work at ordinary or increased pressure, if it is also desired in the presence of other solvents, for example trir,

or dichlorobenzene. From the salts formed from the N-substituted amino carboxylic acids, the substituted amino carbon acids can be set free by means of mineral acids. The products of the process can serve, for example, as intermediates for textile auxiliaries; some of them are themselves auxiliary agents for textiles.
EXAMPLE 1.
2 parts by weight of carbazol and 1 part by weight of powdered potassium hydrate are mixed and melted together to about 260. After cooling the homogeneous dark green melt, consisting of potassium carbazol, is pulverized and heated with an equal quantity by weight of --butyrolactone, for 10 hours, at 180 to 120. The reaction product is poured onto ice, is filtered off from the unconverted carbazol and is acidified with mineral acid. The amino carboxylic acid of the formula
EMI2.1
can be purified by recrystallization from aqueous alcohol.
It then melts at 150.
When J-valerolactone is used instead of Ó-butyrolactone, the following higher homologous aminocarboxylic acid is obtained.
EXAMPLE 2.
Equimolecular amounts of p-toluenesulfamide and sodium ethoxide dissolved in alcohol are brought into contact with each other. The precipitated sodium p-toluenesulfamide is drained, dried in a vacuum and heated with the double amount by weight of Ó-butyrolactone, for 12 hours, to 200.
The reaction mixture is poured onto ice and extracted with ether.
P-toluenesulfamidobutyric acid from aqueous solution
EMI2.2
is precipitated by means of mineral acid. It is purified by recrystallization from water and melts neat at 131.
EXAMPLE 3.
Dodecylsulfamide is converted, by reaction with the equimolecular amount of sodium ethoxide, into the corresponding sodium compound. The latter is heated with the equal amount by weight of Ó-butyrolactone, for 12 hours, to 200. The melt is poured onto ice and is twice depleted with ether. The aqueous solution is evaporated to dryness. Sodium dodecylsulfamidobutyrate remains as a yellowish resin, which is clearly soluble in water, provides foaming solutions and can be used as an auxiliary agent for textiles.
EXAMPLE 4.
A mixture of 86 parts of butyrolactone and 123 parts of potassium pyrrolidone is heated for a few hours at 200. A soft resinous product is obtained, soluble in extended acids and in dilute alkalis.

EXAMPLE 5.
220 parts of potassium indol, obtained by heating for 20 minutes the indol with half its weight of potassium hydrate, to 250, cooling the melt and pulverizing, are heated with 220 parts of butyrolactone, for 10 hours, at 200. The reaction mixture is introduced into water and liberated from the unconverted indol by exhaustion with ether. Then we proceed to acidulation and ether exhaustion. The residue remaining after the separation of the ethereal solution and the evaporation of the ether is distilled off in vacuo.
At a pressure of 2mm. of mercury the aminocarboxylic acid of the formula
EMI3.1
goes to 180; it solidifies after a short time, forming crystals melting at 70.
