<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

<Desc/Clms Page number 8>

improvements in dyeing or processing; similar to textile fibers.
The present invention relates to the dyeing or other liquid treatment of textile fibers, for example fibers of (toton in the coiled form such as they come from the spindle banks, that is to say in the form of wicks, before whether they have gone to actual spinning or spinning loom.
Many methods have been proposed for liquid treatment. fibers in this condition, but it should be remembered that when, for example, they are wound on a perforated metal spool and treated on that spool by differential pressure, the windings are too hard and the bundle is too dense to allow uniform and satisfactory treatment, especially. with fast dyes; such as tank dyes.
EMI1.1
-In addition, these perforated metal coils are expensive.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The present invention relates to a simple and efficient process with a suitable apparatus for dyeing or similar treatment of textile fibers in the form of strands, "designation" which will be maintained hereinafter for convenience, with the assurance that one obtains, a uniform and rapid dyeing of these wicks and such method consists in winding the wick in the loom on a tubular support, to remove clean wick from this support and to place the removed wick on a perforated treatment tube in a machine for the treatment, for example for dyeing, this tube éta nt of smaller diameter than the tubular support on which the wick was wound.
The treatment can then take place and when it is done, one can introduce another support in the treated wick to serve as a conveyor to net last and to bring it to the next process, one can obtain a perfect treatment of the wick by following this method. The inevitable density of the wick produced by winding on a support, in the loom, is entirely eliminated by the separation of the support, the wound pack being released and the whole of the fibrous mass thus being placed in one. freer condition to allow easy and uniform penetration of net mass with the process liquor.
In order to prevent the collapse of the bundle, i.e. the displacement of its windings in such a way that the prepared mass is undone or lost, a sleeve of permeable fabric will be hovered over the tubular support in the loom, from so that the winding takes place on this sleeve which remains inside the bore of the wound drill bit, given that it is withdrawn from the tubular support and that, subsequently, it is threaded onto the treatment tube.
The tubular support in question may be a solid tube of rigid paper, having the surface glazed in order to reduce friction with the permeable sleeve when it is removed, and the final tubular support which is introduced into the coiled wick, after processing, can also be a solid paper tube, with a diameter of

be suitable, as these tubes according to the present invention are not at any time subjected to liquids or other deleterious conditions; practically they can be used indefinitely.
Further, as the first tubular supports on which the wick is wound can return from the processing process to the spinning machine and the subsequent support can return, after the wick has been unwound from it, to the rack. , .tincture or other place where the treatment is carried out ', there is no loss on this account.
The practice of the process of this invention will now be described by way of example, it being understood that large quantities of such strands can be prepared and processed at a time in a single dyeing machine. In the description, reference will be made to the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 shows a view of an apparatus used for the preparation and winding of the wick, while Figure 2 shows aelle in position ready for dyeing.
It should be understood that the figures show only its' parts which relate to the. description of the invention: considering FIG. 1, the broaching bench is, sum of use, with its usual accessories, rollers and members for controlling a plurality of coils, with the necessary lifting device.
With regard to Figure 2, it comprises a known form of perforated metal tube, fixed in a plate, this plate being adapted to rest in a known manner on a seat inside a dyeing machine and the illustration of the connection between the tube and the plate is rather schematic here. Terminal units allow more than one wick to be mounted on the same draft tube. are also illustrated.

The stoakinette sleeve 8 is then passed over the tube 7 and the wick pack is formed, the periphery of which is illustrated in lines x in the figures, the winding; carried out on the bottom tube and its sleeve. silenced for transport and processing.
When it comes to dyeing, the tube 7 is easily slid out of the wick pack itself, leaving the sleeve 8 inside the central passage free. The wick pack with its sleeve is then placed on the perforated metal tube 9, mounted in the metal plate 10, which can be seen in FIG. 2, this plate 10 and the tube 9..being of known construction, sum already mentioned above; and which fit .on.a's seat 'in the dyeing machine, using. any known auxiliary means to ensure their position, The tube:
9 may only be adapted to receive a bundle of wick or a plurality of them; in any case, the lower edge of the support 7 can be suitably placed on the upper edge of the perforated tube 9 and the wick with its sleeve 8 can slide on said perforated tube. In figure 2 a complete wick pack is illustrated and part of another packet. A terminal member 11, frustoconically shaped and perforated, having a circular flange 12, is first passed over it. the treatment tube 9, the flange resting on the plate 10 ..
A chew x being put in place, another metallic and perforated organ They, doubly frustoconical, as illustrated is' then passed over the treatment tube, the lower half resting on the upper end of the wick x, and the upper half receiving and supporting the lower end of. the upper bit x.
The upper end of the wick of the summer of the tube 9 receives a member 11, but reversed, sum it is understood, and the top of the tube.-treatment is closed by a closure cap and a nut or similar, as is known and practiced in the dyeing trade, where a number of cakes of yarns are processed on a single single tube, the capsule being pressed onto the metal member. perforated which rests on the upper end of the upper bit.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
The wicks are now ready for treatment, and the coloring liquor is passed through the perforated tube 10, the permeable sleeve 8 and the wick windings to drain: radially outward under the differential pressure produced by the intervention of the pump d 'usage, the flow then being reversed and then taking place radially from the outside through the said parts for as long as necessary.
As already mentioned, the diameter of the perforated metal tube 9 is such that the wick pack can easily slide over this tube, the fibers thus being in a freer condition, which ensures better and faster dyeing, thus eliminating compression. n by liquid pressure of the fibrous mass against the tube, which otherwise occurs when the wick has been wound on the tube, this having been the case previously in particular where the winding was carried out directly on the metal tube perforated with undesirable consolidation and resulting uneven resistance to penetration of liquid dye. This old defective method caused stains in the dye.
± after the dye treatment, the wick may be subjected to the action of a vacuum or compressed air passed through radially for the extraction of the excess liquid, or again for the oxidation of the dye on the wick where the nature of this dye makes clear operation necessary. In addition, as will be understood, any washing operation with the passage of hot air under pressure can be carried out while the wick is in the position on the tube 9. However, drying can take place later.
When the phase (s) of treatment on the perforated tune 9 are finished, the drill bit x with its sleeve 9 is removed and another paper tube, of the same kind as the first, on which the drill bit has been wound, is passed through the passage. central, the man-
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
chon 8 allowing the operation to be carried out without disturbing the fragile windings of the wick. This second support, as can be seen from the outside, has a diameter / determined to allow the operation.
The thus completely treated sliver is ready to proceed to the next phase in the progression of the fibers to the preparation of the yarn; for example, in the case of the wick, to the spinning machine or, in the case of a coarse wick, to an intermediate pin bed to produce a fine sliver.
if necessary, one can provide an adaptation member or 'distance piece, possibly of wood., which engages inside the second central support, in order to adapt it to a dowel or spindle on which this tube must be held in the next machine or loom. this adaptation member making up for the difference between the internal diameter of such a support and the diameter of the bore of an ordinary wooden reel intended to engage with the usual play on such a plug at skewer..
It has been mentioned that the textile fibers of the wick are in a free and relaxed condition, yet controlled during treatment with the. liquid, and that's it. condition which gives success to this treatment for the reasons stated. this condition is also very useful where it is required to pass, different dyes following patterns or lines of determined color through the wick. This can be done in the form of an apparatus as shown in British Patent No. 294504, and such apparatus can generally be constructed and operated as shown in that patent.
The metal tube perforated on. which the drill bit is mounted, has a dimension such that it can be fitted on a support, as shown at 25 in the specification of this patent, this support being of metal and having a drawing or cut lines. or otherwise formed, from the material, so that the dyes, applied as described in '
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
this patent, will pass through the perforations of the metal tube and through the cut parts of the metal support, the solid parts of the latter serving as a screen to close, as necessary, some of the perforations of the metal tube to reproduce the model.
However, any method of applying the pattern dyes to locks or the like prepared in accordance with the present invention can be employed. to the knowledge of the applicant, it has heretofore not been practical to apply dyes to locks or the like according to patterns, since the freedom or relaxation of the fibers obtained by ' the present invention is an essential feature for such treatment.
Claims- 1.-process for the treatment of textile wicks with liquids, characterized in that a wick is wound in a pin bed on a tubular support which can be removed, that 'net wound wick is removed and placed in a relaxed condition on a perforated metal tube, smaller in diameter than the tubular support on which it was wound, with subsequent treatment of the wick, on a perforated treatment tube, using of a treatment liquid and differential pressure.
2.- The process named as claimed in 1, characterized in that the perforations in the perforated metal casing can be covered or sealed, if necessary, to produce the desired pattern on the wick when treated with a liquid.
