<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

VULCANIZATION ACCELERATORS & THEIR PREPARATION PROCESS
It is already known to use, as vulcanization accelerators, the products resulting from the condensation of aldehydes and aliphatic amines and, among other patents, British Patent No. 180,978 of January 18, 1922, gives numerous examples of this. 'we can try in this way. However, the many variants since made in the method of preparation of this type of product, variants described in various patents, show, by the admission of many authors, that we do not end up with well-defined products (patent German No. 478,948 of March 8, 1926; British Patent No. 265 * 930 of December 29, 1926; U.S. Patents No. 1,780,149 and 1,780,326 filed on January 20, 1926 and March 13, 1925, respectively).
Thus some patents go so far as to describe the condensation products of an amine molecule with 26 aldehyde molecules (US Patent No. 1,850,716 filed June 21, 1930), which does not does not prevent finding many examples with numbers
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
intermediaries.
Faced with the statement of such surprising results, one can wonder if, in such reactions, the major part of the aldehyde is not quite simply condensed on itself by aldolization then crotonization without there being a combination. real with the amine.
This is all the more likely since very small amounts of amines are sufficient, as is known, to cause the aldolization of aliphatic aldehydes. This interesting feature has in fact recently made it possible to establish a new particularly advantageous synthesis of aldols (see French Patent No. 774,079 of June 2, 1934).
In fact, the Applicant has found that it is possible to conduct the condensation of the aliphatic aldehydes on the primary aliphatic amines with elimination of water so as to provide a small number of defined products which differ from each other by their boiling point. - tion and by their nitrogen content in particular. In general% we can isolate the condensation product of one amine molecule on one aldehyde molecule (product A), the condensation product of one amine molecule on two aldehyde molecules (product B) and finally isometic and polymer products of the latter (product C), these being characterized by the same nitrogen content with higher boiling points and average molecular weights.
These three products have very distinct alkaline properties and make bromothymol blue and even phenolphthalein vibrate. They can be neutralized and give neutral salts even with weak acids.
Their activity as vulcanization accelerators varies greatly from product to product. Product C is / much the most active and its efficiency is such that it can be used very advantageously, in the free state or in the form of a salt as a superaccelerator.
These differences in activity are demonstrated in the following table which shows the vulcanization times necessary with each of these products to obtain substantially equal dynamometric qualities, the quantities and qualities of gums subjected to vulcanization, the contents. sulfur and accelerator and the temperatures
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
erasures being otherwise equal in each case. The amine and the aldehyde chosen for the preparation of this table are butylamine and butyraldehyde respectively.

<tb>
In addition, product C, despite its considerable efficiency, does not exhibit, unlike many ultra - accelerators, a tendency to scorch or premature vulcanization because its action is almost zero below 110. In addition, it has an antioxidant action which ensures good "aging" of manufactured articles.
The present invention, based on what has just been explained, relates not only to new vulcanization accelerators and in particular to particularly active products C, but also to the process for preparing these accelerators.
In the preferred embodiment, the process consists essentially in slowly balling a primary aliphatic amine in an aliphatic aldehyde, at the rate of one amine molecule for two aldehyde molecules, vigorously stirring and cooling in such a manner. so that the mass is maintained at low temperature despite the release of heat due to the condensation which is very exothermic.
The lower the temperature, the lower the molecular weight and the greater the reactivity of the products treated.
The various reaction products (products A, B and C) are then separated. The most practical way is to take advantage of the
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
difference between their boiling points and, therefore, subjecting the mixture to distillation, optionally at a pressure other than atmospheric pressure. Of course, the various products can be isolated from each other or product C can simply be isolated from the reaction mixture by making use of other distinguishing properties of these products than their boiling points.
The following examples, which are not limiting, will make the mechanism of this process clearly understood.
EXAMPLE 1.
146 g are added dropwise. of monobutylamine (ie 2 molecules) at 288 gr. of butyraldehyde (ie 4 molecules) maintained at 0 by a cooling mixture. After standing for a few hours, the water which has formed is separated by decantation and the product is dried; it can, if desired, be subjected to distillation under reduced pressure. Then separated, under a pressure of 20 m / m, 34.8 g. of product distilling at 55 and assaying 11.3% nitrogen (product A: 1 molecule of amine + 1 molecule of aldehyde), traces of product boiling at 1150 and assaying 7.9% d nitrogen (product B: 1 molecule of amine @ 2 molecules of aldehyde) and 295 gr. of product distilling between 120 and 180, titrating 7.8% nitrogen and consisting of isomers and polymers of product B.
This product C constitutes the sought-after superaccelerator.
It should be noted that the product B which is considered as the normal condensation product of 1 molecule of amine on 2 molecules of aldehyde corresponds to the formula
EMI4.1
because it is identical to the product obtained by condensation of a monobutylamine molecule with an ethyl-hexenal, aldehyde molecule obtained by aldolization and crotonization of 2 molecules of butyral = dehyde and corresponding, as we know, to the formula -.
EMI4.2
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
In this condensation operation, the temperature has a primordial role and it has been shown that, if one operates at high temperature, the content of product C decreases while the content of products A and B increases as a result of following observations relating to 100 gr. of total products implemented.

It should also be noted that, in the condensation at the boiling point, product C contains ¯ besides the isomers and polymers of product B (nitrogen content 9.3%) non-nitrogenous products resulting from the con = - densation of l aldehyde on itself, which brings down to 7% envi = ron the nitrogen rate.
Generally speaking, the C products are fairly viscous liquid products. On the other hand, their salts of weak acids, which are
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
obtained by neutralizing them with the stoichiometric amount of acid, are products of pasty consistency; this form often allows better incorporation of the accelerator into the vulcanizing gum, easier dosage of the accelerator and often more convenient handling.
The following examples show the results obtained with the superaccelerators described, used in the free state or in the form of salts.
EXAMPLE a.
100 parts of gum are added 0.5 part of stearic acid, 0.8 part of zinc oxide, 1.8 part of sulfur and 0.8 part of liquid superaccelerator C derived from butylamine and butyraldehyde,
After vulcanization for 8 minutes at 140, the products have the following dynamometric properties:
Breaking strength: 2.200 gr / m.m.2
Elongation at break: 850% EXAMPLE b.
100 parts of gum are added to 2 parts of zinc oxide, 2.5 parts of sulfur, 1 part of stearic acid and 2.5 parts of a solid accelerator consisting of the stearate of product C derived from the butyraldehyde condensation. butylamine.
After vulcanization for 10 minutes at 140, the manufactured products have a breaking strength of 2,200 gr / mm2 for an elongation at break of 860%.
It goes without saying that various modifications can be made in the execution of the method described above without departing from the scope of the invention. It is thus in particular that it is possible to use, as weak acid, to neutralize the accelerators, not only stearic acid, but for example other fatty acids such as palmitic acid, oleic acid, l. ricinoleic acid, etc.
