<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

Dry running fire extinguisher with explosion.
The present invention relates to a dry-running fire extinguisher, which comprises a container of suitable material with continuous walls, containing a charge of a powdered extinguishing agent and an explosive charge whose deflagration is determined by the ignition of wicks. boot in communication with it.
A steel rod disposed axially in the container serves as an axial support for a cylindrical cartridge, the charge of which is initiated by a wick enclosed in a small tube of celluloid or other inflammable material of insufficient mechanical strength, capable of settling. to break into very small fragments, this tube being arranged parallel to the solid metal rod of
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
the axial frame, and terminating on the outside of the container.
This small celluloid tube is, in its upper part, closed like a case to ensure the perfect conservation of the wick it contains and its upper end is provided with a brush of celluloid filaments capable of igniting on contact with flames of the fire, spreading the ignition to the combustible case, the priming wick and consequently to the explosive charge of the cylindrical cartridge. The deflagration of this charge develops a pressure which presses the extinguishing charge against the wall of the container, breaking the latter and thus producing the scattering of extinguishing dust all around.
Besides the aforementioned priming wick a second time wick can be provided for the deflagration of the explosive charge, the ignition of this second wick being produced by a capsule which detonates because of the friction caused by the unwinding of a spiral contained in this capsule and which extends outside the container of the extinguisher by a pull wire. This second wick and the respective primer are placed in a small tube of a suitable material, for example cardboard, celluloid or other similar material, disposed parallel to the solid rod of the extinguisher frame and symmetrically with respect to the small celluloid tube that protects the other priming bit. These small tubes can both exit out from the same or opposite sides of the extinguisher.
The rod of the inner frame of the extinguisher container extends at one of its ends to the outside in an operating handle which allows the extinguisher to be placed or launched in contact with the fire. The use of the fire extinguisher
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
is very simple. Before putting the extinguisher in contact with the fire by holding it by the handle, we pull the wire which unrolls the spiral in contact with the fulminating material so that the combustion wick of predetermined duration ignites, we put then the extinguisher in contact with the fire.
It is clear that the extinguisher provided with a double ignition control for the explosive charge mounted on the central rod of the armature must absolutely work, even when the flames of the fire do not manage to touch and ignite. the filaments of the celluloid tube which protects the ordinary wick, because then it is the time control that works and also detonates the explosive charge.
By way of non-limiting example, a preferred embodiment of the invention shown in the accompanying drawing will now be described, in which: a indicates the casing of the extinguisher containing the extinguishing agent in dust b. The casing a is held in position by the solid metal rod of the axial armature c on which the cylindrical cartridge e containing the explosive charge d is sealingly mounted. Through a flat wall of the cylindrical cartridge penetrates into the explosive charge the priming wick f protected by the tubular case g which extends outside the casing of the extinguisher by the filaments h made of the same material as the case , that is to say in celluloid.
Through the other flat wall of the cylindrical cartridge e enters the explosive charge of the primer in time constituted by the wick! combustion of predetermined duration, which is in the tube b and is in contact by its outer end with the detonating friction capsule m containing the spiral of
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
friction n which is extended through the contracted part o of the same tube by the traction wire p with its operating ring r. To the rod of the axial reinforcement of the casing is screwed the handle q of the appropriate material of the extinguisher which bears against the casing a by means of the disc s which is not metallic but has sufficient strength to fill his function.
Holding the bomb by the handle q, the wire is pulled, which detonates the capsule m because of the unwinding of the spiral n on the fulminating material of the capsule, the fuse i thus being lit. The predetermined combustion time of this wick gives time to bring the extinguisher into contact with the fire, which ignites the filaments h which communicate the ignition to the explosive charge by means of the tube g and the wick f.
If there are no flames to ignite said filaments, the extinguisher also works because the explosion is produced by the ignition of the charge due to the burning of the wick of the friction primer.
