Suivant la présente invention le thermoplongeur comporte une douille chargée d'une composition qui comprend un mélange, utilement en poudre, d'oxyde ferrique et/ou de minium avec un siliciure et est oapable de subir, après allumage, une réaction chimique avec dégagement de chaleur mais substantiellement sans dégagement de gaz ou de vapeurs inflammables; un moyen d'allumer cette composition depuis l'extérieur de la douille ; une lumière faisant communiquer l'espace occupé par la composition avec l'extérieur du thermoplongeur; un filtre interposé entre la composition chauffante et la sortie de la lumière, propre à laisser passer de l'air chaud ou du gaz mais à retenir toutes particules solides ;
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

DESCRIPTIVE MEMORY
SUBMITTED IN SUPPORT OF A REQUEST
OF PATENT OF INVENTION the Company known as: IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES LIMITED Improvements relating to heating, in particular preserved foods and beverages. English patent application of October 25, 1940 in his favor and in favor of Mr. W.A. CALDWELL.
The present invention relates to a heating device and more especially to an immersion heater intended to be used in cases where ordinary heating devices are not available or cannot be used, the heating material employed in this immersion heater being the species which, during storage, does not generate flammable vapors.
We often find ourselves in circumstances where it is necessary to heat materials such as water or liquid food without the availability of gas or electricity or a regular kitchen heater. Many types of portable stoves burning liquid fuels are known, but the immersion heaters according to the present invention can be employed in cases where liquid fuels are inapplicable or cannot be properly employed, for example due to inclement weather or under conditions. limited spaces such as rooms hermetically sealed against the penetration of toxic gases. These immersion heaters are easier to handle than stoves.
It has already been proposed to charge immersion heaters with compositions which give off heat when they are turned on in order to initiate a chemical reaction.
According to the present invention the immersion heater comprises a socket charged with a composition which comprises a mixture, usefully in powder form, of ferric oxide and / or of minium with a silicide and is able to undergo, after ignition, a chemical reaction with release of heat but substantially without evolution of flammable gases or vapors; a means of igniting this composition from outside the socket; a light communicating the space occupied by the composition with the outside of the immersion heater; a filter interposed between the heating composition and the light outlet, capable of allowing hot air or gas to pass but of retaining all solid particles;
and a heat insulator suitable for restricting the flow of heat from the heating load to the medium in which the immersion heater is immersed when the latter is in normal use; this immersion heater being furthermore executed in such a way that during such use the exit of the light is outside the immersion medium.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The immersion heater according to the invention is either provided with a device by which it can be held so that the opening of the socket is outside the substance to be heated, or executed so that one of its ends can itself fulfill the function of such a device. In addition, the immersion heater according to the invention can be coated internally with a heat-insulating material, for example asbestos paper, at its part containing the filler, the purpose of this coating being to prevent the heat from flowing too much. quickly from the socket outward and burn, char or produce other local overheating effects. On the other hand, the socket may itself be made of a material which is a poor conductor of heat.
According to another feature of the present invention the socket can be made so that after the completion of the reaction the residue can be removed and replaced by a new charge and, if necessary, by a new one. igniter device, while according to another feature of the invention the device comprises a rechargeable socket made in such a way as to be able to receive charges of different sizes, so that the user can adapt the charge to the quantity of material that he wants to heat.
The heating compositions employed in accordance with the present invention give off a large amount of heat for a given weight, but the development of heat is comparatively slow. Therefore the reaction proceeds quietly at a rate suitable for the purposes contemplated by the present invention and without the need to dilute the reagents with a large amount of inert material. The compositions according to the present invention also have the advantage that they decompose substantially without evolution of gas.
The bush can advantageously have a tubular shape and the invention is described in the following with reference to a tubular bush.
The intensity of the reaction between the oxide and the silicide can be controlled by varying the relative proportions of these ingredients, or by the inclusion of ingredients such as talc or kaolin or other chemically inert and absorbent solid diluent. heat, but the mixture should be such as to give off a glowing red or white heat when ignited in an uncooled socket. The mixture can be compressed or agglomerated, to reduce its volume to a minimum.
The means for igniting the load from the outside may include an element capable of being ignited by a weak heat source, such as a firing wick or the like, for example a primer coated strip of paper. a composition based on nitrocellulose and sprinkled with a slag-forming igniter mixture, or a fusing wick end, or other suitable type of primer passing through a communication lumen. the primer composition itself may be of a non-gas-evolving type. However, it is possible to provide means for starting by percussion or by friction.
As the heating mixture may be difficult to ignite it is sometimes desirable, particularly when the mixture has been diluted with an inert heat absorbing material, to provide an intermediate initiating charge which may advantageously consist of a readily ignitable mixture. not giving off gas.
The sleeve can be made of any suitable material which can withstand one of its faces being subjected to a temperature.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
high combustion temperature while the other face is subjected to the cooling effect exerted by the contact with the material to be heated. For example, a tube of thin steel sheet, tinplate, brass or silica can be employed. It can be made of sheet metal by any suitable process providing a gas-tight seal, such as drawing or stamping or folding, stapling and welding.
The end and a side portion may be coated with a layer of asbestos, a mixture of kaolin and sodium silicate, or other heat resistant material.
As an ignition means, a primer or an ignition wick can be introduced into the tube through the communication lumen so that one end of the primer or wick is embedded in the heating mixture. .
The filter can advantageously consist of a pad of glass wool or of asbestos wool and the primer or the wick can pass through this pad. According to one embodiment of the invention the remaining empty part of the socket may be flattened. This means prevents contents from falling out of the socket, keeps the primer or bit in position by squeezing it, while the presence of the primer or bit prevents complete collapse of the socket and leaves a passage or exit light for heated air.
For storage and transport the exhaust port and the ignition means may be temporarily sealed, for example by adhesive tape or paper, by a welded tear-off metal closure, or by the like.
When in use, the end of the immersion heater containing the charge is placed in the material to be heated, so that all this part of the immersion heater is depressed or immersed in the material while the light escape orifice remains in place. outside. Then the primer or the wick is ignited and in turn ignites the heated mixture which reacts rapidly at a very high temperature leaving a residue.
Another embodiment of an immersion heater, capable of recharging, comprises a socket the bottom of which is lined with a layer of heat-insulating material. At the bottom of this socket, one or more agglomerates of the heating mixture are placed, optionally containing a small amount of silicate acting as a binder. Each chipboard is surrounded by a tubular layer of heat-insulating material of dimensions allowing its easy introduction into the immersion heater.
Above the heating mixture agglomerates is placed a perforated metal disc, lined with an inflammatory composition on the side facing the heating material and provided with a tubular extension parallel to the sleeve and extending in the direction opposite to the heating load, this extension being tightened around the corresponding end of the part constituting the start in time. This tubular extension is arranged so as to enter a central tube passing in a straight line through a removable plug of glass wool or other filtering material, held in shape by perforated plates provided at each end.
A perforated cap can be screwed into the open end of the socket, this cap being provided with a spring which presses against the filter and thus holds the contents of the socket in place. The primer in time passes through this cap and protrudes it by a suitable length.
The accompanying drawings show by way of nonlimiting example two embodiments of the object of the. present invention, namely: 'Figures 1 and 2, two axial sections, at right angles to each other, of a first embodiment of the
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
immersion heater; Figure 3, the use of the immersion heater according to Figures 1 and 2 to boil the water contained in a kettle; FIG. 4, an axial section of a rechargeable immersion heater.
In Figures 1 and 2 the outer sleeve 1, made of thin steel, is cylindrical at one end and flattened at the other. The cylindrical end is closed. A coating 2, consisting of a mixture of kaolin and sodium silicate, is placed in the cylindrical part of the immersion heater, this part forming a cup-like container, filled with the heating composition 6 consisting of 35 parts of calcium silicide, 65 parts of minimal and 8 parts of talc. Above this heating mixture is a bloo or glass wool plug 4. Through this glass wool plug pass the wick 5 which extends from the open end of the heating cartridge to a primer composition. 6 consisting of a mixture of calcium silicide and minium.
The upper end of the socket is closed by a protective layer 7 of adhesive tape.
The use of this immersion heater is illustrated in Figure 3. The immersion heater is immersed in a kettle so that its flattened end comes out through the opening in the lid of the kettle.
The cover is placed to close as much of the opening as possible in order to conserve heat. The protective tape 7 is then torn off and the end of the wick is lit by means of a match. It has been found that with an immersion heater containing 150 g of the aforementioned heating mixture, 0.57 l of water can be brought to the boil in 90 seconds. Instead of placing the cover as shown in Figure 3, it is sometimes advantageous to stir the liquid to be heated with the thermoplonge.
According to the exemplary embodiment shown in FIG. 4, the sleeve 1 is fitted with a threaded cap 2, perforated in the center at 3 to receive the end of the bit of the primer in time and also at 4 to allow gas to escape from inside the socket. At the base of the sleeve 1 is a coating 5 of kaolin and sodium silicate. Two charges 6, each of which has been previously lined with a tubular layer 7 of kaolin and sodium silicate are placed on the heat-insulating layer 5. On the upper face of the upper charge of heating material is pressed a layer 8 of a inflammatory composition, this layer being supported by a perforated plate 9 having a tubular extension 10 tight around the wick of the time primer 11 which passes through the central hole 3 of the cap 2.
The tubular extension 10 and the time primer wick 11 enter a metal tube 12 extending between two perforated plates 13 and 14 which together with the tubular member 15 surround the glass wool filter. the. This filter is biased downwards by a spring 17 bearing on the cap 2.
To recharge this device after use, the cap 2 is removed and the filter is pulled out of the socket by means of what remains of the wick of the primer at time 11 which is then thrown together with the plate 9. The slag of the heating mixture, which is still still contained in the kaolin and silicate tubes, can be shaken out of the socket.
A number of heating charges corresponding to the quantity of liquid to be heated is then introduced into the socket.
The user has an igniting mixture applied to a new plate 9 packed with a new primer wick in time

11 tightened in the extension 10. The wick is first passed through the tube 12; then the wick with the primer and the filter are pressed together in the socket, the spring 17 is placed over the filter and the cap 2 is screwed in place.
