<EMI ID=1.1>
pact.
<EMI ID=2.1>
<EMI ID=3.1>
<EMI ID=4.1>

Projectile and rocket refinements for projectiles
This invention relates to explosive, incendiary or tracer projectiles and, in particular, to projectiles provided with time fuses.
Explosive projectiles of the kind widely used for defense against air attacks include
<EMI ID = 1.1>
pact. Since only a small fraction of these projectiles strike the target, it is preferable that the shells explode before they reach the ground and for this purpose a device is generally provided consisting of a rocket.
time which automatically bursts the projectile after
a trajectory of fixed duration. It has been proposed to constitute the rocket in time by a flame tracer composition.
which ignites when the projectile leaves and which makes the position of the projectile visible throughout the trajectory or during a fraction of it. In this case the projectile is charged so that the flame produced by the last portion of the ignited flame tracer composition ignites the detonator, or an intermediate powder charge communicating with the detonator, which is part of the percussion fuse. .
However, such an arrangement is not entirely satisfactory, since premature or uneven combustion of the flame tracer composition may cause too much
early the bursting of the projectile with very dangerous consequences. To reduce the risk of such an occurrence, devices with retarding action are sometimes housed in the base of the projectile which delay for a certain time after exiting the barrel the ignition of the tracer composition with a flame or other flammable composition, but generally these devices are of complicated construction and their operation is uncertain.
In smoke tracer or incendiary projectiles there is generally no percussion fuze and
a smoke-producing or incendiary composition contained in the projectile disperses during the trajectory of the shell. In projectiles of this type the expulsion of the smoke-generating or incendiary composition generally begins as soon as the shell leaves the barrel, but it is often preferable to delay the action of this composition until the projectile has passed through a distance. certain length of its trajectory so as not to waste the composition; however, owing to the lack of space, this has hitherto been difficult to achieve for small caliber projectiles.
The object of the present invention is to provide projectiles of the type specified, which are free from the aforementioned drawbacks and which burst, produce a trail of
<EMI ID = 2.1>
taine at a determined moment of their trajectory.
According to the present invention, in a projectile of the type specified, provided with a time fuze comprising a combustible composition which ignites when leaving the barrel, this combustible composition is housed in a compartment of the projectile, separated from the explosive substance or the main smoke-generating or incendiary composition. The combustion of this combustible composition serves to heat the partition separating the compartments, and the detonation of the explosive, or the fusion or ignition of the tracer or incendiary substance, is produced only by the heat transmitted through this partition * As combustible composition can advantageously be used any tracer composition with a conventional flame.
Preferably the heating of the partition has the effect of spontaneously igniting a suitable initiating substance, for example fulmicoton or black powder, and the flames produced by the explosive initiating substance serve to detonate an appropriate detonator or in igniting a heating device which melts the smoke-generating or incendiary composition.
By the present invention the risk of premature explosion of a high explosive power projectile is eliminated, since the time required for the transmission of heat through the partition is long enough to allow the projectile to move away from the barrel. In addition, in the case of a smoke tracer projectile, it is possible to vary the lapse of time, following the departure of the shell, after which the emission of smoke or incendiary material occurs, by varying the time used for heating the smoke-producing or incendiary composition.
Two exemplary embodiments of the invention are shown in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a longitudinal section of an explosive projectile for anti-aircraft firearms, FIG. 2 is a longitudinal section of a tracer projectile, and FIG. 3 is a cross section taken along the line A-A in FIG. 2.
In the anti-aircraft projectile shown in FIG. 1 the rear part of the steel projectile body 1 is hollow and there is fitted a cylindrical copper vessel 2 into which is introduced under pressure, on site, a combustible material 3 comprising a tracer composition with a slow combustion flame which contains magnesium powder, barium nitrate and a suitable organic filler. A layer of initiating composition 4, compressed and easily ignitable, consisting of powder of magnesium and barium peroxide, is provided at the rear end of the container, which slightly protrudes from the base of the projectile and which is closed by a washer. brass 5 with a central hole 6.
The hardness of the copper container is chosen so that the pressure employed to charge the tracer composition creates between the container 2 and the projectile body 1 a substantially gas-tight seal. The other end of the container 2 is in the form of a partition in the center of which is provided a small cylindrical compartment 7, constituting a cup-shaped cavity, which is filled with ignition material 8, by relatively little erasure. high but which is not ignited by the shock produced by the departure of the projectile.
The main explosive charge 9 and a detonator
percussion instruments of suitable construction are housed in a chamber in the front part of the projectile and this chamber is separated from the hollow part of the shell, containing the container 2, by a relatively thick metal wall 10 pierced with a small central hole 11 as the drawing shows.
The projectile has at its tapered front end
12 a sensitive percussion fuze, not shown in detail in the drawing, which serves to explode the projectile when the striker strikes a target such as the canvas or the carcass of an airplane. A small charge of black powder 13 is located directly behind the percussion detonator and this charge is intended to be ignited by the flames
igniter 8 to detonate the detonator and main charge 9.
In order to avoid excessive heat loss by conduction towards the body 1 of the projectile, the upper part of the container 2 is thermally insulated from the projectile body by means of a heat-insulating material 14 such as asbestos or paper. Or the container can be shaped so that the contact area between the tube and the projectile body is reduced to a minimum, giving the outer walls of the container a fluted or corrugated profile. A thin lead foil 15 is disposed over the ignition composition 8 to hold the same in place, and preferably this foil is adhered to the upper end of the container 2 by means of an adhesive.
At the start of the gun, the initiating composition 4 is immediately ignited by the flame of the pro-pulsating charge and in turn ignites the combustible tracing material 3. On burning, this tracing composition heats the receptacle 2 up to that the temperature of the walls of the compartment 7 containing the fulmicot 8 is high enough to ignite the latter. The lead sheet then melts and the flame produced by the ignited fulmicoton passes through hole 11 and the central cavity 16, made in the main explosive chamber, to ignite the charge of black powder.
13 which causes the explosion of the detonator forming part of
<EMI ID = 3.1>
The period of time, following the departure of the projectile, after which the explosion takes place, can be adjusted in advance by
<EMI ID = 4.1>
tess of combustion of the tracing composition. The duration of this delay can also be adjusted in advance by an appropriate modification of the thickness of the wall separating the tracing composition from the fulmicoton or by the use of materials of different conductivity.
In Figs. 2 and 3, the time fuse according to the invention is shown in its application to a tracer projectile intended to produce a visible smoke trail. As in the previous case, the retarding action rocket consists of a combustible composition 17 housed in a tubular container 18 made of copper and which is ignited by the flame of the propellant charge via a starting composition 19 placed at the rear end of this container. The container is fixed in an envelope
20 which is screwed in one piece into the body 21 of the projectile.
A fulmicoton igniter 22 is housed in a cylindrical cavity 23 formed in the end of the copper vessel lined with the casing 20 by means of a thin layer of asbestos
24. A relatively thick metal wall 25 is provided in the casing 20 and in the compartment located in front.
in this wall is housed a calorific composition 26 consisting of black powder and Carnauba wax. In the wall
25 is drilled a central hole 27 and the fulmicoton igniter 22 is held in place by means of a lead foil 28.
The smoke-generating composition 29 consists of yellow phosphorus and this is housed in a container 30, hermetically sealed, which has a central opening 31 and grooves 32 provided on its outer surface to ensure the circulation of the flame and the products. combustion, this container being placed directly above the calorific composition. An exit hole for phosphorus is provided in vessel 30 at point 33, and this hole remains closed by an easily fusible material such as solder until this closure is melted by the heat of combustion of the composition. calorific.
Molten phosphorus leaves the projectile through hole 34 which is also previously closed by an easily fusible material 35, and when this phosphorus comes into contact with air it spontaneously ignites to produce visible smoke.
By hermetically enclosing the phosphorus in a container, one protects against any possibility of leakage and spontaneous ignition before firing the projectile. Since an interior heater is used in this way, a large proportion of the heat of combustion is used and the amount of heat composition is thus reduced to a minimum, thus leaving more room for the combustion composition. smoke.
In another embodiment of the tracer projectile, not shown in the accompanying drawings, the tubular copper container containing the combustible material is arranged so as to protrude inside the part of the shell cavity containing the fuel. phosphorous marking material, said marking material being in contact with a portion of the exterior surface of the container. No intermediate calorific composition is used, but the heat transmitted
through the walls of the container serves to melt the phosphorus for expulsion from the projectile.
