<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

The present invention is aimed at improvements to powder reactors for self-propelled projectiles of the combat rocket, American "bazooka", etc. type.
All these devices are designed in such a way as to carry a certain payload, to which logically the greatest possible part of the available projectile weight should be reserved. Also the weight of the other elements of the projectile in question and especially that of its reactor must necessarily be reduced, which generally leads to limiting the thickness of the wall of the reactor to a strict minimum.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
However, these fundamental desires come up against other conditions imposed on a self-propelled projectile, in particular with regard to its ballistic behavior.
Boost and duration of combustion, for example, to name only the most marked characteristics of a rocket, are proportional to the pressure of the gases inside the reactor. This pressure, however, being itself a function of the available volume and of the chemical reaction temperature, is substantially limited in absolute value, if one does not want to risk damaging or even complete destruction of the reactor, whose resistance properties are already weakened by the high temperatures involved.
To overcome these drawbacks, i.e. in order to reconcile the requirements in the different fields of tactics, ballistics and safety, in some cases a layer of thermal insulation is provided on the internal walls of the reactor and in others a safety valve, directed like a normal nozzle towards the rear and opening automatically as soon as the pressure of the combustion gases approaches a certain critical value. While such thermal protection obviously does not take into account the increased pressures, the introduction of a safety valve presents serious risks from a ballistic point of view, because when it is opened the projectile receives an additional impulse and not planned, liable to distort the trajectory.
To avoid these drawbacks, the invention recommends a very simple device, which can be introduced into any powder reactor. This device substantially comprises a piston movable in the axial direction inside the reactor. By this displacement, which takes place as soon as the pressure of the gases has reached a determined value, the volume available for the combustion of the powder increases in such a way that the pressure does not exceed
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
the critical threshold while remaining quite uniform in intensity during the work period.
The invention can in any case be clearly understood with the aid of the following description and of the appended drawings, which drawings and descriptions are, of course, given above all by way of indication.
FIG. 1 is a view in longitudinal section of a powder reactor comprising the safety piston, object of the invention.
FIG. 2 is a partial view, also in longitudinal section, of the rim of said safety piston.
The reactor (1) of the conventional type, which is essentially a nozzle chamber (2) for the combustion of a charge of propellant powder (3), the ignition of which is effected in a known manner by a device (4 ), is partitioned at a certain height by a safety piston (5). The latter is prevented from moving in the axial direction by its collar (6), which is either embedded directly in the wall of the reactor (1) or else immobilized by resting against the face of a shoulder (7). In the remainder of the description we will only talk about this last version, comprising a reactor narrowed inside to a certain height by a shoulder in the form of a staircase, although the first version remains just as possible without obviously changing the principle. of the patent.
Said shoulder (7), which extends inside the reactor (1), further serves as a housing for the piston (5) which is generally cylindrical and bored. It is further dimensioned in such a way that there is only a little clearance between its outer convex surface and the inner concave surface of its housing.
Between the outer face (7) of the base of the piston and the front end (8) of the combustion chamber is a free space in which the piston (5) can
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
slide, as soon as the resistance due to friction and to the collar is overcome by a higher force.
If the piston is sufficiently bored inside, this hollow can be filled, by the ignition device (4) so that the propellant charge (3) is initiated from the front side. Such an arrangement has the further advantage that the deflagration of the igniting mixture (4) expands the piston (5) and that the latter is, consequently, sealed from ignition.
The rim (9) at the open end of the piston (5) - shown with the collar (6) in partial view in FIG. 2 - is formed in such a way that a force exerted in the axial direction on said collar, obviously a force possible only in the nozzle-piston direction, always results in a shear force acting in the critical section of the collar (6), marked in dotted lines in drawing 2.
To avoid therefore that the collar is not deformed by folding it is essential that the rim (9) has a certain minimum height calculated suitably from the collar, taking into account the forces involved.
The thickness of the collar also depends on the force which must cause it to break. Given that an increased pressure directed towards the inner face of the hollow cylinder can only cause shearing of the collar, the latter is then torn almost instantaneously from the hollow piston.
The pressure safety device works as follows: As long as - during the working period - the pressure of the combustion gases inside the reactor remains at a certain predetermined value depending on the ballistic behavior of the rocket. part and with a safety coefficient sufficient for the resistance of the walls of the
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
reactor on the other hand, the piston remains firmly immobilized, because this pressure of the normal regime is not enough to break the resistance opposed by the collar (6) and by the piston itself clamped in its housing by the radial pressure. The internal volume of the combustion chamber is then included between the planes A-A and B-B (see fig. 1).
As soon as the working pressure exceeds the imposed value and as soon as there is therefore a danger of the reactor bursting, the collar (6) is sheared and the piston moves back into the free space, against the friction forces opposed to its displacement, to stop either. at a point where the combustion pressure, altered by the enlargement of the combustion chamber, balances the resistance of the friction, or - at the latest - at the front end (8 ) from the combustion chamber. The volume available for establishing the combustion pressure is then between the plane A-A and B'-B ', which corresponds to a significant increase compared to the original volume.
According to the fundamental laws of mechanics, this increase leads to a drop in pressure, and an increased pressure can thus be brought back to a reasonable level.
The execution described is obviously in no way limiting and one could realize above all the way of fixing the safety piston inside the reactor in any other suitable way, provided that the mode of reduction of a pressure raised by a piston with hard friction and with a collar which can be removed by shearing is respected.
