Bombe extinctrice d'incendie.
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>
<Desc/Clms Page number 12>

Fire extinguisher bomb.
We know that in recent years extinguisher bombs have asserted themselves, among the means of extinguishing a fire, as very effective despite some drawbacks; an internal pressure produced by the bursting of an explosive charge, generally placed in the center of the bomb, destroys the envelope and then the extinguishing charge, for example powder or liquid, contained in the bomb, is projected all around on the fire source.
One of the drawbacks of this type of bomb is constituted by the fragility of the shell of the bomb itself, a fragility that is certainly essential for proper operation but having the drawback that when the bomb is thrown at the fire source. The outer casing deteriorates or is partially destroyed. The internal pressure developed by the deflagra-
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
tion of the explosive charge then produces the projection of the solid or liquid charge in an irregular manner and rather in the direction of the zones of the envelope which oppose the least resistance, thus weakening the extinguishing effect of the bomb which can become partial lack of homogeneity of the extinguisher breath.
The disadvantage naturally increases when the extinguishing agent is a liquid which escapes through accidental fractures, even before the bomb is in operation.
In order to prevent the shell of the bomb containing the extinguishing charge from deteriorating on falling and thus diminishing the effectiveness of the extinguishing action, the expedient of protecting the shell itself from the bomb has been resorted to. be by outer layers of a thick material, for example cardboard resistant to the impact of a fall, but which substantially prevents the projection of the extinguishing charge, especially if the bomb is provided with metal elements. external liques for fixing said layers united together in any way. The handling of such bombs is furthermore dangerous because of the material used in their manufacture which shatters and acts like projectiles, at the same time reducing the uniformity of the dispersion of the extinguishing charge.
The ignition of the explosive charge of these bombs generally takes place by the ignition in contact with the flames of the fire and the subsequent combustion of the filaments or appendages of the cable-holder tube which comes out of the casing, composed as its appendages of celluloid or other material which, at the instant of the explosion of the priming wick which it contains, is destroyed by combustion and breakage.
This tube, which is generally arranged parallel to the rod of the axial reinforcement of the
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
bomb must be used to protect the priming wick against contact with the extinguishing agent and humidity in general, but it does not have, because of the very nature of the material of its composition, the qualities necessary for this purpose , its mechanical resistance being very low, and it is very difficult for the tube to be able to withstand without being damaged, the considerable forces to which it is subjected during the making of the bomb. If the integrity of this tube is imperfect, even partially, the operation of the priming wick and therefore the operation of the bomb itself becomes absolutely defective.
The object of the present invention is to provide an extinguishing bomb essentially different from all bombs of the same type known hitherto, because all the above-mentioned drawbacks are eliminated, the bomb having all the qualities required for its purpose. and ensuring the complete safety of all those responsible for its handling with the greatest operational certainty, and extinguishing efficiency being absolutely guaranteed.
The bomb is provided with an explosive charge contained in a spherical or spherical cartridge with premeditated rupture lines preferably placed in the center of the bomb which is threaded tightly over the tubular rod of the inner axial frame of the bomb. the bomb, this hollow rod containing the primer which communicates with the said explosive charge through openings provided in the tubular rod.
This rod, because of its function as a supporting frame for the bomb, is made of a material capable of mechanically resisting all the forces to which it is exposed during all the operations of preparation, loading and assembly of the bomb, this which at the same time represents absolute protection of the primer con-
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
held in the rod ensuring in any case the operation even long after the manufacture of the bomb.
The choice of a spherical or at least spheroidal cartridge for the explosive charge instead of a cylindrical cartridge is based on the observation that the latter, because of its shape, presents to the deflagration of the resistance walls too much. misshapen producing areas of scattering of the extinguishing charge of varying intensity, which impairs a homogeneous extinguishing effect. The axial armature tube of the bomb, because of its central position with respect to the explosive charge, is exposed to a set of reverse pressures which balance in all directions and prevent their projection.
On the ends of the axial reinforcing tube are mounted concave or convex discorders made of a non-metallic material, which does not shatter, for example cardboard, papier mache and other similar materials, which keep in its place, complete and close the actual casing of the extinguisher bomb, this casing being composed of a thin, light material which does not shatter, impermeable to humidity, characterized in that it is provided with numerous lines of premeditated rupture so as to ensure, at the moment when it is broken, the homogeneous scattering of the extinguishing charge of the bomb in all directions, from the center to the outside, from the * to the internal pressure caused by the deflagration of the explosive charge.
The priming wick is protected in its part protruding from the casing through the tubular rod of the axial reinforcement of the bomb, by a sheath of material impermeable to humidity, highly flammable, which under the effect of 'high ambient temperature (dark heat) or the flames of a source of fire, ignites by spreading the immediate ignition.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
diatement to the fuse for initiating the explosive charge. For specific purposes, the sheath may be provided with filamentous appendages of variable length in order to facilitate the ignition of the wick even at a distance from the flames.
The shell of the bomb may be of a polyhedral, spherical, spheroidal, elliptical, prismatic or any other suitable shape and for its maneuver it may be provided with a handle or a throwing handle and suspension. It is important to note that for the bombs intended for launching, because of the fragility of the casing with premeditated rupture lines (fragility necessary for the proper functioning of the bomb), an external protective cage has been provided against. shocks which form at a certain distance from the casing a large mesh network comprising a system of small protection bars joined at the two poles of the bomb, with support caps of a similar material serving as a base,
precisely where the ends of the tubular inner armature rod of the bomb terminate. The protective cage consists of a lightweight, non-metallic and non-shattering material, for example gum, paper, cardboard hardened in any way or substances impregnated with suitable plastics. This cage is fixed, as already said, at the location of the poles of the bomb, to the caps mentioned which are provided with openings for the passage of the appendages of the inflammable sheath of the primer of the explosive charge; but the cage can also be fixed to other points of the casing by forming curved, elastic and deformable elements so as to constitute a shock absorber for the protection of the casing whatever the position of the casing. the bomb falling on the fire source.
The bars of the cage,
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
due to their spacing from the casing and their suitably reduced cross-section which does not prevent the homogeneous projection of the extinguishing charge. In order to ensure even better operation of the bomb, in addition to the aforementioned thermal initiation of the explosive charge, a second primer of the same quality or a primer controlled by one of the known time-activated ignition devices has been provided. the hand.
This second primer is always arranged coaxially with the first and in the same tubular rod, at the other end.
This kind of jerk ignition control requires that the arrangement of the explosive capsule provide sufficient strength to withstand the high tension required to unwind the friction coil with a certain speed over the explosive material. This condition does not arise when the capsule is placed on flexible materials such as for example cardboard or celluloid, which in turn do not rest on rigid materials which can cause the capsule to retreat from the wick a moment before the inflammation, thus causing the bomb to misfire.
On the contrary, the arrangement of such a control in the single organ of the really resistant compound of the bomb, that is to say in its axial tubular rod of the internal frame, preserves and guarantees the immobility of the parts. and therefore their operation in the same way as if it were a firearm.
It can be clearly seen from the above-mentioned characteristics, applied separately or in combination, that it is possible to construct different types of this kind of bomb without departing from the protection limits of the invention.
Thus it is possible to make a polyhedral or spherical bomb or of any other shape provided with a handle for its handling and provided with a thermally controlled primer.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
and another time-controlled of the friction type, these primers always being disposed coaxially in the tubular rod forming the inner support frame of the shell of the bomb. This rod is provided with radial openings communicating with the explosive charge contained in a spherical or oval cartridge tightly threaded, preferably halfway up, on the reinforcing rod which constitutes the axis of the bomb.
This tubular rod is extended to the outside of the shell of the bomb and is connected with the aforementioned launching shaft, this shaft perforated longitudinally in order to allow the passage of the cored cord through this hollow. the primer on time terminated by a ring or maneuvering hook.
Other types of tomb can be built without a handle, but with the two types of groundbait indicated above, applied separately or in combination, the handle being replaced by a hat with lights in a material which does not shatter. , to fix therein the protective cage and the friction control device of the primer in time or even to allow the passage of any filamentous appendages in the case of a primer of the thermal type. These bombs will then be fitted with a launching and suspension handle made of a flexible and light material, attached in some way to the envelope itself and to the protective cage, or independently to one of the two. . The handle can consist of one or more elements of the protective net or cage and of appendages adapted thereto.
In order to better highlight the advantages of the extinguisher bomb according to the invention, provided with a handle or a flexible handle or deprived of both, but in the latter case provided with a protective net or cage
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
In this connection, two embodiments shown in the accompanying drawings will now be described, in which the same numbers indicate the same parts.
Fig. 1 shows in axial section an extinguisher bomb provided with an operating handle and two primers, one thermally controlled the other with time control of the friction type which is maneuvered immediately before depositing or throwing the bomb on the fire source. The bomb is shown without the protective net or cage.
Fig. 2 shows in partial axial section a fire extinguisher without a handle, particularly arranged for launching, provided with a flexible handle for launching and suspension and also with a double command to initiate the explosive charge, ie. i.e. a thermally controlled primer and a friction type time controlled primer, the latter being actuated in the launch case, the two controls being arranged coaxially in the same tube in the form of execution illustrated by FIG. 1.
In fig. 1, the bomb support frame consists of a tubular rod 1 made of a suitable material, the upper end of which is provided with an external thread for tightening with a double nut 3 which fixes the cover 4 , made of non-metallic material and not shattering, of the shell of the bomb 5 with premeditated rupture lines, which are not shown.
The lower end 6 of the tubular rod has a shape flared towards the outside and is provided with an internal thread 7 and the flange 8 which supports the closing cover 9 with its upper leaf and which bears through the washer 10 on the longitudinally drilled handle, made of wood or other suitable material, fixed by the drilled connector 12 threaded externally and also made of suitable material
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
ble, at the widened end 6 of the tubular rod 1. The assembly thus constituted is easy to assemble and disassemble, which allows the assembly after the bomb has been loaded, of the time-controlled primer formed by the detonating friction capsule 13 with its friction spiral 14 which extends through the hole of the connector 12 and of the handle 11 in a bead 15 terminated by the operating ring 16.
As soon as the detonating capsule 13 with its friction spiral 14 extended by the bead 15 is placed in the tube 1 it is in contact with the safety lamb 17 which, being slow combustion, takes, once ignited by the friction capsule 13 , a few seconds to ignite the priming mash 18, the combustion of which sets fire, through the openings 19, to the explosive charge 20 contained in the spherical or spheroidal cartridge 21 (or other form) which is fixed on the tubular rod so that the lumens 19 are in the middle of the cartridge.
The priming bit 18 which, through its lower end, is in contact with the safety bit 17, extends into the tubular rod 1 beyond its slots 19 until it comes out through the end 2, threaded. externally so as to form an appendage 22 completely enveloped by a hermetic case 23 made of a moisture impermeable celluloid derivative having a very low point of ignition. This case is provided in its outer upper part with priming filaments 24, of the same material having a very low flash point, passing through the wide openings 25 of the protective cap 26 made of a light material which don't be shattered.
The special characteristic of the whole system for initiating the explosive charge 20 of this bomb according to the invention consists in the coaxial arrangement, in the tubular rod forming the inner frame, as well as the thermal initiator.

constituted by the filaments 24 of the impermeable case 23 and the rapid wick 18, that of the friction control time primer constituted by the ring 16 with the saccade cord 15, the friction spiral 14, the detonating capsule friction 13 and the safety wick 17 with slow combustion of a predetermined duration. If you want to use this bomb as a launching bomb, the protective net or cage (not shown) is fixed on one side to the cap 26 and on the other to the operating handle, by means of a suitable annular clamping member not illustrated.
The operation of this fire extinguisher is extraordinarily simple and safe. Holding the bomb by the handle 11, the ring 16 is pulled from the bead 15 and the spiral 14 is unrolled which, by its friction, detonates the capsule 13, igniting the fuse 17 with slow combustion and of predetermined duration, after which the bomb is placed in some way on the fire source. The filaments 24 passing out of the lumens 25 of the protective cap 26 ignite either by the heat of the fire or by contact with the flames, so that the fire is communicated to the rapid wick 18 which, ignited at both ends, after a short duration of combustion, transmits the ignition through the light 19 of the tubular rod 1 to the explosive charge 20.
This, by exploding, breaks the shell of the bomb 5, with its premeditated rupture lines (not shown), protected against impacts, in the launch bombs, by the mentioned protective net or cage, so that the extinguishing charge is scattered all around, evenly, extinguishing the fire.
Figure 2 shows a launching extinguisher bomb, without handle, fitted with a protective net or cage.

formed by the elements shaped into bars 27, of a material which does not shatter but is flexible with the casing 5. This, in the figure, has a spherical shape, but it could also be of a any shape, for example blocky; it has rupture lines 28 and is internally armed with the same tubular rod 1 of suitable material, with the same cartridge 21 containing the explosive charge 20 as in the bomb of FIG. 1.
The flared end 6, internally threaded, of this tubular rod 1, which in FIG. 1 is connected to the drilled handle made of wood or other material, is provided in this case with a small drilled connection 29 for the passage of the friction cord 15 of the detonating friction capsule 13, the primer in time. The wooden handle is replaced by a protective cap 26a similar to the cap 26 which protects the other pole of the bomb; the protective net or cage which is formed by the bars 27 of flexible material which does not fly apart and absorbs the impact of a fall, rests on these caps.
Through the openings 24 of one of these caps, that is to say of the one which in this bomb replaces the handle of the bomb according to the shape shown in FIG. 1 pulls out the ring 16, which, when pulled, tightens the cord 15 and causes the unwinding of the spiral 14 of the detonating capsule 13, which causes the primer control to operate on time. instant of the bomb launch; Through the apertures of the other polar cap 26 the ignition filaments of the thermal initiator emerge which ignite when the bomb falls on or near the source of fire.
This launching bomb is provided with a handle 30 made of a strip of textile material which extends at 31 around the bomb in a plane perpendicular to the tubular rod 1, and which serves to clamp against the surface of the casing the bars @

protection 27 so that they are bent outwards, thus springing and absorbing the shocks of a fall, in order to protect with the two polar caps 26 and 26a, made of elastic material and which does not fly apart, the shell of the bomb and prevent it from being damaged by falling on solid objects in the source of the fire.
The operation of this bomb is quite similar to that of the bomb shown in FIG. 1 described above.
It is clear that apart from the preferred embodiments described and shown, it is possible to prepare, by combining the same characteristic elements of construction in different ways, other types of bombs of the same kind without departing from the scope of invention.
