<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

Improvements to jams for trees and other similar components.
The present invention relates to sealing or packing devices, or oil retaining gaskets, for shafts and other similar members, and more particularly intended to prevent the leakage of lubricating oil along a shaft. . It relates more particularly to jams of this type in which a stuffing member is used, the transverse section of which has the shape of an L, the flat annular part of this stuffing member being attached to a flat annular support member and the part of the stuffing which is engaged with the shaft being held against the shaft by means of an annular coil spring surrounding that part of the stuffing.
According to the invention, and in opposition to the known devices which have just been mentioned, instead of using a flat annular support member for the actual packing, it is necessary to

employs a support member shaped to support the portion of the L-shaped stuffing engaged with the shaft, in the desired inclined position so that buckling of that portion is prevented.
In order for the invention to be fully understood, the appended drawing shows a diametral section of a device in accordance with the invention. a designates the outer casing of the stuffing, formed of a cylindrical body provided with an opening b, in its plane base, for the free passage of the shaft or other body c.
The stuffing pad, designated d, is preferably made of leather and has a flat annular portion d, and a shaft engaging portion c. The flat portion of the pad rests on the inner surface of the annular portion. of the casing a and is clamped or hooked on this flat part by the washer which rests on the upper surface of the part d 'of the liner; it is held firmly in position by the vertical cylindrical wall! disc g which constitutes the closure of the casing a; and is perforated to allow free passage for the shaft c.
The disc g is held in position by folding the upper edge of the casing a over this disc at h. i designates the annular coil spring which engages the part of the stuffing engaged with the shaft at a suitable distance from the outer end of this part, so as to force it to rest closely against the shaft.
The spring is also in contact with the internal surface of the disc ± which thus maintains it in the desired position on the part of the stuffing in question.
In order to ensure that the part of the stuffing engaged with the shaft is kept tilted to a sufficient extent to ensure that the spring 1. retains its position at the outer end of that part of the stuffing, the edge of the opening of the flat annular part of the casing a is internally curved so as to extend axially, as indicated at b '. If it is desired

rable, the outer face of the part turned inside out may be bevelled, so that the surface adjacent to the shaft is parallel or substantially parallel to the surface of this shaft.
The retracted part b ', besides ensuring that the spring maintains its desired position, prevents buckling of the stuffing part engaged with the shaft, which, as soon as it is saturated with oil, loses its rigidity.
In addition, if this part of the stuffing engaged with the shaft were to buckle, the spring would slide towards the top of the cone formed by this part, and, either escape from the casing a or scratch or damage the shaft. vs,
Moving the spring out of the top of the cone would further allow the portion of the stuffing engaged with the shaft to buckle or bulge outward away from the shaft, thereby removing the necessary contact. between the shaft and the packing.
CLAIMS.
