<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

improvements to freewheel cycles and their braking mechanisms.
The invention relating to freewheel hubs of cycles of the type comprising a chain pinion provided internally with teeth intended to engage them with projections or helical projections provided both on the hub and on an organ immediately adjacent to this hub. , and the; said chain sprocket is conditioned to move axially on and make an engagement to drive the hub when it is itself driven in one direction, and to move axially on its side to come into engagement with the neighboring member when it is. driven in the opposite direction.
The subject of the invention is improved devices capable of operating in the manner indicated.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The invention consists of a freewheel device, of the type indicated, in which the chain sprocket, passing from one engagement to the other, passes through an area having no positive rotational engagement.
The invention further consists of a freewheel device, as defined, in which the central opening or bore of a chain sprocket is provided with internal V-shaped teeth arranged in a helix while complementary teeth arranged in a helix on a hub and a member adjacent to the latter are provided on surfaces inclining towards each other and, or reduced in diameter at the edges in contact in order to provide a path on which can be maintained the chain sprocket without positively engaging either member, but, at the same time, may be subjected to a force directed along the axis, applied to it by the movement of the chain.
The invention also consists in the improvements to the free rescue cycles and 1 eui s-braking mechanisms as defined in the description which follows.
With reference to the accompanying drawings:

Fig 9 is a partial plan view similar to Fig 7;
Fig 10 shows a longitudinal section through a hub according to the invention comprising an adjacent member capable of performing a rotational movement against elastic friction, and,
Fig 11 shows another variant in which widenings are provided on the regions having helical grooves of the hub and the adjoining member.
In the embodiment of the invention shown in figs 1 to 5, a cycle hub a is provided, at the place where the chain sprocket is generally fixed thereto, with a region a1 provided with helical grooves, with which can engage internal teeth formed in the opening or central bore of a chain sprocket b.
The chain sprocket b, which can be formed from a plate-like material of uniform thickness ;, has a central opening b1 provided with a circle of internal teeth or grooves of V-profile, b 2, which can be arranged helical on a cylindrical surface as shown in Fig 4.
On the end of the hub a, there is provided, as shown in Figs 1 and 5, an engagement region for the chain sprocket b, shaped as a ring a2 with a diameter sufficiently larger than that of the opening or central bore of the chain sprocket to constitute an axial stop at one of its sides, and
2 next to this ring a, and retaining it on the end of the hub, there is provided another screwed ring a comprising teeth, arranged therein in a helix as shown in a1, and complementary to the teeth b2 provided in the opening or central bore of the

chain sprocket b.
The helical teeth a1 of the ring a3, however, are preferably formed, as shown, on a slightly tapered surface instead of on a cylindrical surface as in the case of the teeth of the chain sprocket. b the narrower end of the conical surface or region being located on the outer side.
On the axis of the hub c, in the vicinity of the rear leg of the frame, another member d in the form of a ring is mounted, comprising a region provided with teeth disposed in an elliptical manner, d1, which constitutes a counterpart of the toothed portion a1 of the hub, this ring-shaped member d comprising a threaded region adjacent to the outer and wide end of this member, onto which a solid ring can be screwed, d2 to form an axial stop intended for the other side of the chain sprocket b, in the same way as the corresponding member a2 on the hub.
The two helical tooth regions, and preferably conical al, dl, respectively of the hub and of the neighboring member, are arranged with their narrowest ends meeting one another in the middle of a threaded region helical on which is mounted the chain sprocket b, and the middle part of this portion, where the two helically toothed regions meet, is clean, by an appropriate reduction in diameter, as shown in a1 and d4, to be formed a partial area over which the chain sprocket b can pass, as shown in broken lines in fig 5, without making a positive engagement with either side, or, in other words , through axial displacement of the surface of the hub a1 on the surface of the neighboring member d1,
or else from the neighboring member on the hub, the chain sprocket passing through an intermediate region in which it is liable to make noise on or slide relative to the two surfaces without positively engaging one of them.
The path or zone a4, has a sufficiently small peripheral diameter to allow sliding, but the points
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
teeth b2 of the chain sprocket will however still be capable of being, by the force exerted on the chain, brought into engagement, with the portions, extending transversely to the path or zone; teeth formed on the two conical regions al, dl, and, thanks to this means, a force exerted on the ciiaine in one or the other direction causes the axial displacement of the chain sprocket either completely on the hub to achieve the 'training engagement with this, or completely on the neighboring organ.
In fig 6, the hub end comprises a ring e1 screwed onto this end and provided with helical teeth as shown in fig 7, which can be cut using a circular member such as a plate or the like, the teeth being formed so as to merge with the cylindrical portion of the ring and thus form an axial stop for the edge of the chain sprocket b.
In this constructive arrangement, the neighboring member f is provided with teeth of the same type as those of the hub ring e1, the two series of teeth preferably being cut in a single operation.
As shown in this figure, the neighboring member f is held between the cone g and a washer g1 of the axis c of the hub, the washer being in contact with the leg of the fork g2.
Figures 8 and 9 show a slightly modified construction in which the cylindrical member or plate to form them. teeth is of smaller diameter and the chain sprocket b moves a smaller axial distance from the drive engagement position with the hub to its position on the neighboring member i.
In the construction shown in fig 10, the chain sprocket b is conditioned to move from the ring it mounted on the hub to the neighboring member, the :. teeth being of the type described with reference to figs 6 to 90
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
In this arrangement, however, the neighboring body! is mounted so that it can freely rotate around a ring k1 mounted on the axis of the hub c between the cone m and the fork leg m1.
A washer or plate m2 is mounted on the cone m and retains a spring n in contact with the internal face of the neighboring member so that this member is free to rotate against the friction of the spring *
The neighboring organ is therefore maintained in such a way that in retro-pedaling, the pedal can be moved more circularly than it could be with a current fixed part.
This peculiarity is generally advantageous and also very important because it allows the user to move his pedals in a circular fashion to a position he deems suitable, probably with the right foot or dull with the left foot. closer to the ground. This is not only better for movement, but seems to eliminate the irritating noise between free running and training.
The arrangement shown in FIG. 11 shows portions of larger diameter, c and c1, both on the drive part of the hub and on the neighboring member. In this arrangement there is provided a friction spring n as described above, and the larger diameter portions, o and c1 provide a kind of boss or hook on which the chain sprocket is held either in the driving position. , or in the free position, and the chain sprocket will remain naturally in this position unless an effective drive or back-pedaling force is applied.
The neighboring member can be used, when it is moved, to actuate a brake applied to the wheels of the cycle, for example by means of a suitable pawl-and-ratchet device or any other one-way engagement device, with means suitable for perform this function, or it can be conditioned to develop suitable devices in the hub in the usual way of Coaster hubs by motion
