<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

"IMPROVEMENTS TO MULTI-CYLINDER PUMPS"
The invention relates to pumps with several cylinders of the general type in which there is provided a rotating cylindrical body enclosed in a cylindrical casing and comprising a series of cylinders in which pistons come and go, when the cylindrical body rotates in the cylinder. 'envelope.
The present patent is intended to protect a special construction of a pump comprising a means of lubricating the moving parts by means of the fluid passing through the pump and which is also described in another patent application filed by
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
author of the present invention and showing a similar construction applied to another pump construction.
These inventions, as described in the earlier application and in the present patent, are more particularly intended for use in pumping viscous fluids, such as viscose and nitrocellulose collodion, in combination with the spinning mechanism. by means of which these fluids are driven through spinnerets to form filaments of artificial silk, although, of course, these pumps can be employed for all ordinary purposes for which the pumps are reserved.
The nature of the present improvements will be better understood by referring to the appended drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of the improved pump, taken along line 1-1 of FIG. 2.
Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view taken along line 2-2 of FIG. 1.
Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view taken along line 3-3 of FIG. 1.
Fig. 4 is an end view of the left end of the pump shown in FIG. 1.
A denotes a casing having a cylindrical bore A1 and suction and discharge chambers A2 and A3 opening into the cylindrical bore midway between its ends, as shown in the drawing. A4 designates a passage or duct with an open side putting the chamber A2 in communication with the end
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
left of the casing and A denotes a similar open-sided passage or conduit putting chamber A3 in communication with the right end of the casing. B and B1 denote chambers formed at the ends of the casing with which communicating the conduits A4 and A5 and with which also communicate, as indicated, the inlet and outlet ports A6 and A.
C denotes an annular end plate fitting over the left end of the casing and having, as shown, a cylindrical interior surface C1. D designates an additional end plate fitting against the outer edge of end plate C and having a threaded extension D and a central threaded hole D. The end plates are fastened together and to the end of the casing by bolts, as shown in E.
F denotes a threaded ring which screws onto the threaded extension D, the outer annular surface of the ring F fitting closely against the cylindrical surface C '. This ring F has an extension F1 extending into the chamber B ot supporting a helical cam indicated on F2. f and f1 are openings formed through the extension F1 in order to constitute a communication between the chamber B, the orifice A and the passage A.
G designates a threaded bolt screwing into the perforation D2 and having a rounded end extending into the chamber B for the purpose explained later. H designates a plate closing the right end of the casing and held in position by bolts indicated at I. As shown, this plate has a threaded extension of the gland H1 into which a gland cap fits. H2 cable gland adjusted by means of the H3 nut screwing onto the threaded cable gland, as shown. H 4 designates a stop for the end of the rotating body J,
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
extending into chamber B1.
J denotes a cylindrical body fitting into the cylindrical bore of the casing and having, as shown, a cylindrical extension J1 extending into the chamber B and a control shaft J2 extending through the chamber. stuffing box, in the end plate H and to this drive shaft is connected, for example, a gear wheel M. J4, J4, etc ... denote cylinders formed in the rotating body J and opening into the left chamber B but not into the right chamber B1. The inner ends of these cylinders are placed in communication, by means of radial ports J5, with the surface of the cylindrical body J, at points where they coincide, when the body rotates, with the suction ports and discharge A and A.
J6 designates a central perforation formed in the extension J. K designates a spindle with a head fitting into the perforation J6 and against the end of which the end of the bolt G comes to rest so as to keep the rotating body J in contact with the stops H and in a fixed position in the casing . L, L denote pistons moving in J4 cylinders and having heads as shown at L1 which are formed to fit on either side of the helical cam]? so that when the body J rotates, the pistons receive a reciprocating movement in the cylinders J.
In operation, the fluid entering, for example, through the orifice A6, enters the chamber B from which it passes through the open-sided passage A, coming into contact with the surface of the rotating body J, into the chamber of aspiration A3; from there, the fluid passes through the ports J5, in the ends of the cylinders J during the suction strokes ds pistons and then again through the ports J5 it passes
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
into chamber A and, through the open side passage A, into the end chamber B1, and from there through the outlet port A7.
It will be understood that the pistons of the pump are actuated by the rotation of the cylindrical body J and by the cam F2 acting on the heads of the pistols, and it is obvious that all the moving parts, in chamber B as well as in chamber B, are constantly lubricated by the fluid flowing and pumped, and that the rotating cylindrical body J is constantly lubricated, over its entire length, by the fluid passing through the open side conduits A and A .
Another characteristic of the invention consists in that the thrust at the end on the rotating cylindrical body J is only the difference between the pressure existing in the chambers B and B1; this difference is not generally high, and therefore the improved construction tends to pocket leaks.
