<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>

<Desc/Clms Page number 12>
<Desc/Clms Page number 13>

Automatic telephone system
The present invention relates to automatic telephone systems in general, but more particularly relates to automatic telephone systems in which use is made of searcher switches, and the main object is, in summary, to provide a searcher system which is safe in operation. and which uses simple construction switches.
One of the aims of the invention is more particularly to produce a finder switch system using a finder switch whose start and test or switching relays are replaced by a single relay which does the work of both.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
Another goal is to provide a simple and efficient arrangement for restarting a finder in case. it stops on the terminals of a non-calling line as a result of the accidental removal of the earth from the test contact of that line.
Yet another object is to make suitable circuit arrangements to force a second seeker to find a calling line in the event that the first to find that line is unable to establish a carry circuit for itself.
The other characteristics which are not mentioned here will become clear and will be described below. in the accompanying drawing, there is shown by means of the usual circuit diagrams a sufficient part of the apparatus of a telephone system including the principles of the invention so that the latter can be understood.
There is shown a telephone line extending from station A to the office where it terminates in the fixed contacts of a group of searcher switches such as the searcher f and is associated with a line circuit Lo. This drawing also shows the FA Seeker Assignor which extends the starting circuit to a free seeker after the assigned one is taken into service. The drawing shows. also the selector E which is connected to the searcher F by the conductors 75-77 inclusive.
Station A is an automatic station and it is therefore provided with a calling device, in addition to the other usual and well known devices.
Each of the seekers such as seeker F, as well as are the mechanically seen FA researcher assignor, of the well-known rotary type of comitatuer in which the trotters do not have a normal position and are moved, in the direction towards forward only, by the jerky feed magnet, and in which the rubbers are moved when the magnet de-energizes rather than when the feed magnet energizes.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
The selector 3 is an automatic switch of the usual vertical and rotary type in which the fixed contacts are arranged in horizontal rows or in stages.
In order to explain the detailed operation of the equipment shown, it will be assumed that the subscriber of station A wishes to make a call and therefore withdraws his receiver from the hook-switch. When the receiver is removed from station A, a circuit is closed by means of line conductors 11 and 12 for the upper winding of the combined line and interrupt relay 14. As a result of the. resistor 15 which is interposed in this circuit, the relay 14 is only energized to a sufficient extent to make the armatures 17 and 19 functiunner.
When armature 17 is attracted, it disconnects test contact 22 from earth and connects it to the particular normal conductor 13, and when armature 19 is attracted, it places earth on starter wire 29, which closes a circuit for the lower winding of the combined starting and test or switching relay 63, belonging to researcher F, as follows: from earth by means of the armature 18 of the relay. 14 and its rest contact, by the working contact of the armature 19 and this armature, the starter conductor 29, the signal relay 31 in series, the armature 42 and its rest contact, the wiper 46, the conductor 50, the rest contact of the armature 72 and this armature, and the lower winding of the rail 63 with marginal adjustment, towards the battery.
The relays 63 and 31 are energized in series by means of this circuit and the relay 31 opens a corner in the circuit. common alarm horn 35 to prevent this horn from functioning under the effect of the excitation of the relay 30 which occurs at this moment.
Due to the fact that the current flowing through the lower winding of relay 63 is limited by the high resistance series relay 31 in the FA seeker assignor, the relay 63 does not energize sufficiently. make the @ work

frames 70 and 71.
When the armature 71 is attracted, it closes a circuit for the upper winding of the relay 63 in series with the jerky advancing magnet 61, as follows: from earth through the slider 44 of the assignor FA, the conductor 48, the armature 71 and its make contact, the upper coil of the relay 63, the switch contacts 64 and the jerky feed magnet 61 towards the battery. When the armature 70 is attracted, it connects the test walker 25 to the junction of the upper coil of the test relay 63 and the jerky feed magnet 61.
The further operation of the Cnercneur F depends on whether the trotters 24-26 including the finder F are on a calling line or on a non-calling line. In the event that the finder's rubbers are on the terminals of a calling line, the test walker 25 is engaged with an ungrounded test contact and the operation of the armature 70 is without. effect; the upper winding of the switching relay 63 is energized immediately, with the result that the remaining armatures of the relay are fully energized. In the present case, however, ion will assume that the terminals on which the finder's rubbers are located are the terminals of a non-calling line.
In this case, the terminal encountered by the test wiper 25 is earthed by means of an armature and its rest contact corresponding to the armature 17 and its rest contact. However, the winding of relay 63 is short-circuited and does not energize.
In this case, the earth potential encountered by the upright wiper 25 is extended by the armature 70 and its working contact and by the switch contacts 64 up to the jerky advancement magnet 61. As a result of operation of the jerky advancement magnet 61 by means of this circuit, the wipers 24-20 inclusive are set in jerky rotation as a result of the operation analogous to that of a shaker which this magnet 61 has and which is produced by the contacts switch 64.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
When the contactors 24-26 inclusive of the finder F reach terminals 21-23 inclusive of the calling line, the test slide 25 encounters the ungrounded test contact 22 and the jerky forward movement. of the researcher ceases accordingly. When this occurs, the previously indicated circuit, passing through the upper winding of relay 6j, kicks in, after which relay 63 fully energizes, attracting the remaining armatures.
When the relay 63 is fully energized, the line conductors are connected to the armatures 68 and 74; a local circuit is closed for the jerky advancement magnet 61 to the armature 73; the lower winding of the shine 63 is moved from the starter conductor 50 to the release junction line conductor 76 to the armature 72., and at the armature 69 the test wiper 25 is disconnected from the junction of the upper winding of the relay 63 and the jerky feed magnet 61, and it is connected to the upper winding of the special test relay 62 by means of the armature 65, and its contact rest.
This armature of relay 62 is adjusted slightly and this relay therefore energizes rapidly in series with the lower or interrupting winding of relay 14, by means of the following circuit: from earth, by the upper winding of relay 62 , the rest contact of the armature 65 and this armature, the work contact of the armature 69 and this armature, the test wiper 25, the test contact 22, the armature 17 and its work contact and the lower winding of relay 14, towards the battery.
By energizing in the circuit indicated above, the relay 62 closes a latch circuit for its lower winding of the armature 66, which circuit contains the make contact of the armature 73 and this armature, and to the armature. armature 67 it opens the circuit of the jerky advancement magnet 61 before this magnet has had time to be energized, and it closes a circuit for the relay 32 of the FA searcher assignor, which will be described more late.
It should be noted that while the jerky advancement magnet 61 has an @
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
Relatively heavy armature and hard adjustment, the relay 62 has a lighter armature and less hard adjustment and for this reason it is able to energize and open the circuit of the advancing magnet 61, as is the case. 'indicated, before the feed magnet 61 could operate. The circuit mentioned above for the relay 32 of the FA researcher assignor is as follows: from the earth through the working contact of the armature 73 and this armature, the armature 67 and its working contact, the conductor 49, the wiper 45., the frame 41 and its rest contact and the relay 32, towards. drums.
The relay 32 does not energize immediately when this circuit is closed due to the fact that its core has a brass collar placed on the end of the core facing the armature, as indicated by the upper part. blackened core.
Another result of the excitation or special test relay 62 is that the test slider 25 is disconnected from the upper coil of the relay 62 (leaving the relay 62 locked by means of its lower coil) and is extended to 'to the release trunk line conductor 76.
As a result of the fact that the line conductors of the calling line are connected to the armatures 68 and 74 of the relay 63, as was indicated above, the line relay 135 of the selector E is energized by means of the line subscriber calling and closes a circuit for release relay 136 to armature 151. Release relay 136, when energized, opens a point in the circuit of release magnet 144 and prepares a circuit. for the vertical magnet 140 to the armature 153, and to the armature 152 it applies earth to the release junction line connector 76. This earth potential is extended, by means of the make contact of the armature 72 and from this armature, to the lower winding of the relay 63, which completes a retention circuit for this relay.
The earth potential applied to the junction line conductor ± of
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
release 76 also extends by means of the make contact of the armature 65 and of this armature, and then by means of the circuit drawn previously up to the battery via the lower winding of the relay 14. The relay 14 s This then energizes enough to attract the remaining armatures, which disconnects the ground from the starter conductor 29 at armature 18 and removes the bridge between the conductors of the line calling to armatures 16 and 20.
A branch circuit of the lower coil of the relay 14 extends through the particular normal conductor 13 to test contacts mounted in multiple in the rows of fixed contacts of the connector switches having access to the. line of station A, which protects this line from intrusion in the usual way. Another result of applying the earth potential to the E selector release junction line conductor 76 is that a circuit is closed for the upper winding of the relay 33 of the FA seeker assignor through the through conductor 47 and test wiper 43. When energized, relay 33 opens the circuit of relay 32.
to the armature 41 before this relay 32 has had time to be energized, and to the armature 42 it opens the starting circuit so as to avoid interference with the searchers on which the wiper 46 passes which is put in rotation in the sequel. A branch of the circuit of the upper coil of the relay 33 extends by means of the switch contacts 40 to the jerky feed magnet 34, and consequently the feed magnet 34 is actuated in the manner of a shaker, which results in the sliders 43-46 inclusive being jerked in search of a free seeker.
The searchers assignor wipers stop when the next free seeker is reached, due to the absence of an earth potential on the test contact thereof, and relay 33 therefore de-energizes .
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
Note that the wiper 4, moving away from the fixed contact 48, opens the circuit of the upper winding of the two-phase relay 63. This leaves the relay 63 locked by means of its lower winding which is energized by means of. of the release junction line conductor 76 through the make contact of the armature 72 and this armature.
Although this winding is not able to energize the relay enough to operate all the armatures when its circuit is closed via the high resistance series relay 31 of the FA seeker assignor it is now energized by the 'intermediary of a circuit which does not contain the high resistance relay 31 and for this reason it easily maintains the relay in operation just like any ordinary winding.
When the calling subscriber operates his calling device in accordance with the first digit of the desired number, the line relay circuit 135 (switch E) is opened a corresponding number of times. Each time the line 135 relay de-energizes under the effect of one of the interrupts thus produced, it closes a circuit as follows for the vertical magnet 140: from earth via the rest contact of armature 159 and this armature, armature 151 and its rest contact, armature 153 and its work contact, relay 137 and vertical magnet 140 towards the battery. By the operation of the vertical magnet 140, the wipers 161-163 inclusive are raised to opposite the desired stage of fixed contacts.
Relay 137 is excited in series with vertical magnet 140 and since it is slow acting, it maintains its armature attracted throughout the vertical movement. As a result of the energization of the relay 137, the latter closes a circuit to the armature 15 for the jerk advance relay 138, by means of the normal normal contacts 143 (which close during the first vertical advance) and the contacts switch 142. The jerky feed relay 138 closes on! exciting a circuit of

156 he prepares a circuit for the rotating lover 141.
At the end of the vertical movement, the slow-acting relay 137 de-energizes and completes the circuit from the rotating magnet 141 to the armature 154. The rotating magnet 141, when energized, advances the trotters 161-163 inclusive up to engaged with the first set of fixed contacts in the chosen stage, and towards the end of its travel, it opens the circuit of the jerky advance relay 138 to the switch contacts 142.
the jerky advancement relay 138 opens, by de-energizing, the circuit of the rotating magnet 141 to the armature 156, after which the rotating magnet 141 also de-energizes and again closes its switch contacts 142. In the In the event that the trunk line terminating in the first set of fixed contacts is free, the switching relay 139 energizes immediately.
If, however, it is assumed that the Junction line is occupied, the switching relay 139 is short-circuited by the earth potential encountered by the test wiper 162, and the advancement relay 138 is energized by continuation of this same earth potential and again closes the circuit of the rotating magnet

This alternating operation of the advance relay 138 and the rotating magnet 141 continues until a free Junction line is reached, which will be assumed to be the terminating one. to the fixed contacts 164-166 inclusive, after which the switching relay 139, no longer being short-circuited, energizes in series with the jerky progress relay 138.
However, the progress relay 138 does not energize at this time due to the high resistance of the switching relay 139.The switching relay 139 energizes a point in the test circuit and prepares the switching circuit. restrained to the frame 158; it disconnects the earth of the armature 151 from the line relay 135 to the armature 159, which opens the circuit of the release relay 136, and at the armatures 157 and 160, it disconnects the

In order to explain how a seeker switch such as finder F, for example, is restarted after stopping on a non-calling line, it will be assumed that the starter wire 29 is grounded under the effect of a call from another line than the line of extension A. one will also assume that the searcher assignor is in the position shown in the drawing and that therefore the searcher F is started looking for the calling line .
Another assumption which will still be made at this time is that the contactors 24-26 inclusive of finder F reach the line terminals of station A before they reach the terminals of the calling line and the armature 17 of the relay 14 is not properly set or otherwise its normally-open contact is covered with dust or other insulating material. The things established thus, the test contact 22 is not ground and the finder F stops accordingly on the terminals 21-23 inclusive and the two phase relay 63 gets energized.
In this case, since the armature 17 of the relay 14 is not attracted, the lower winding of the relay 14 is not connected and no circuit is closed for the upper winding of the special test relay 62 Under these conditions, the test relay 62 remains de-energized and the advance circuit 61, by the work contact of the armature 73, the armature 6 (and its work contact, and the resistor 64 ', remains closed for a time long enough to allow the jerky feed magnet 61 to energize. When energized, the jerk feed magnet 61 opens its switch contacts in the usual manner, with this result that the circuit of the upper winding of relay 63 is open and that this relay 63 de-energizes and opens the circuit of the advancement magnet 61 to the armature 73,
after which the magnet 61 also de-energizes.
As a result of the excitation and de-excitation of the magnet
<Desc / Clms Page number 12>
61, the switch wipers 24-26 inclusive are moved to the next set of contacts and when the relay 63 is partly energized again by means of its lower winding, the seeker F begins to operate again. , which results in the calling line being found in the usual way. It has previously been described how the FA seeker assignor was caused to assign the next seeker as a result of the grounding of the release trunk line conductor 76 of the seeker F by the release relay 138 of the selector E.
It can happen at rare intervals that one of the three conductors of the junction line stretching between the finder F and the selector E is open, which results in the line relay l35 not being energized. , or that the energization of the line relay 135 is ineffective to cause the Earthing of the release junction line conductor 76. In this case, the usual circuit for the jerky feed magnet 34 n 'is not closed by the intermediary of the trotter 43 and the relay 32 which is slow to be excited is able to be excited by means of the circuit / previously which contains the attracted reinforcements 73 and 67 and the armature 41 and its rest contact.
On energizing, relay 32 closes a circuit for the jerk 3+ feed forward to armature 38, after which the jerk feed magnet 34 energizes and brings the associated pawl into engagement with the armature. next notch in the ratchet wheel actuating the slider, but owing to the fact that its wipers are moved on de-energization rather than on its energization, it does not move the associated wipers.
Another result of energizing relay 32 is that it closes a circuit for relay 33 at armature 39, after which relay 33 energizes and opens the circuit to relay 32 at armature 41; relay 32 then de-energizes and opens the circuit of jerky advancing magnet 34, which results in the advancing magnet 34 de-energizing and advancing trotters 43-46 inclusive into engagement with the @ terminals

of the next researcher.
In the finder F, the relay 63 is de-energized by the fact that the wiper 44 leaves the fixed contact 48, as a result of what no retaining circuit has been closed for the lower winding by means of the line conductor. junction of $ release 76. This results in conditions being returned to normal in finder F.
As the starter conductor 29 is still grounded due to the fact that the two-phase relay 14 has not been fully actuated, the next assigned searcher is immediately started to search for the calling line.
Occasionally the starting circuit is open at a point between the high resistance seris relay.
31 and the start coil of the assigned searcher, and when a similar condition arises, it is desirable that the attendant be notified. When the starting circuit is opened at one of the points mentioned, it follows that although the relay 30 is energized in the usual way by follows. because the starter conductor 29 is earthed, the series relay 31 is not in a state to energize and a circuit is closed for the common horn 35 through the break contact of the 'frame 37 and this' frame, and' frame 36 and its working contact. This operation notifies the agent who takes the necessary measures to eliminate the fault.
