<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

a 350 C.

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
EMI5.1
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

Improvements in the expansion of vegetable matter into particles.
The present invention relates to the expansion of vegetable matter into particles.
The applicant's English patent brief no. 8,605,376, to which reference is made here, describes an expansion apparatus comprising a gas agent supply device, suitable for supplying a hot gas agent, a conduit, transport, one upstream end of which is in gas flow communication with the supply device, a dispensing device capable of delivering a particulate plant material into the transport conduit, and a separator of a type similar to that described in the English patent No. 1,575,175 and the United States Patent No. 3,580,644 comprising an envelope, an inlet for gaseous agent in the envelope, an outlet for gaseous agent from the envelope, this outlet being generally opposite to the entry of gaseous agent,
a gas permeable separation screen which extends across the interior of the envelope, so that the inlet and outlet of the gaseous agent are arranged on either side of the separation screen, and a plant material outlet on the same side of the separation screen as the gaseous agent inlet, the gaseous agent inlet being in gas collapse communication with the downstream extremist of the transport conduit . An expansion apparatus comprising these features will hereinafter be referred to as "specified type apparatus".
In a device of the specified type, the separating screen has been mounted, for cleaning or repair purposes, so that it can slide to and from the active position. The mounting of the screen, z this effect, is ensured by long
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
mounting brackets attached to the interior surfaces of the separator enclosure. When the screen is in its active position, the mounting brackets extend along the edges of the screen and above them, one set of brackets being arranged above and another below the screen. The apparatus has been used to expand particulate tobacco and has been found to be generally effective for this purpose.
However, when the device is in service and the temperature of the humid air entering the transport duct is equal to or higher than 350oC, a malfunction has been observed. This must be manifested by the presence in the tobacco leaving the separator
EMI2.1
of highly roasted material agglomerates. It is not uncommon for matter to even be in combustion. Such a defect affects the industrial acceptability of the device of the specified type.
The invention which is the subject of the present specification provides an apparatus of the specified type, in which the separating screen of the separator extends, on its side facing the inlet of gaseous agent of the separator, over the whole of the gas flow section of the separator casing.
The apparatus according to the invention comprises,
EMI2.2
preferably an air lock, the inlet of which is in common with the outlet of the separator intended for the plant material.
With the aid of the apparatus according to the invention for expanding particulate tobacco, it is possible to completely eliminate the above-mentioned malfunction.
In order to fully understand the present invention and easily implement it, reference is made below, by way of example, to the appended schematic drawings, in which FIG. 1 illustrates parts of a device

tobacco expansion, and FIG. 2 is a view, on a larger scale,
EMI3.1
of a separator of the apparatus of FIG. 1.
The apparatus shown in FIG. 1 includes a tobacco dispenser 1, an upwardly inclined transport duct 2 and a separator 3. The tobacco dispenser 1 comprises a rotary air lock 4 fitted with an inlet hopper 5 and an outlet pipe 6 extending downward. At its lower end, the pipe 6 opens in a short inclined sleeve 7, one inlet end of which is connected to a supply pipe 8. The supply pipe 8 is part of a supply device d gas agent, for the rest not shown, which can be used to supply humid air at a temperature equal to or higher
EMI3.2
at 350 C.
The outlet end of the sleeve 7 communicates with the transport duct 2. The transport duct 2 is of rectangular section, its small dimension being visible in FIG. 1. At its upper outlet extremist, the duct 2 opens in an envelope, generally designated by the reference 9, of the separator 3.
A tobacco outlet pipe 10 Si extends downward from the lowest point of the separator 3 to a rotary air lock 11. A flow pipe
EMI3.3
12 extends below to the air lock 11. An air outlet duct 13, of rectangular section, leaves the separator, at an intermediate location of the height thereof.
A downwardly inclined Separation Screen 14 extends across the interior of the enclosure 9 of the separator 3 and takes the form of a thin rectangular sheet of stainless steel which has been made permeable

gas by microperforations, typically holes 0.8 mm in diameter. In view of the removable mounting of the screen 14 in the casing 9, this casing 9 is divided, at the level of the screen 14, into upper and lower casing sections 15 and 16. An external assembly flange s' extends continuously around the mouth of each of sections 15 and 16.
Parts of the flanges, which extend over the upper wall of the casing 9, are designated in FIG. 2 by the reference numerals 17 and 18 and other parts, which extend over an end wall of the casing 9, are designated by the reference numerals 19 and 20. The remaining parts (not shown) of the flanges of sections 15 and 16 of the enclosure extend over the front and rear side walls of the enclosure 9.
As shown in Fig. 2, at its edges, the screen 14 extends between the external assembly flanges of sections 15 and 16 of the envelope. Assembly means keep the upper and lower flanges in firm contact with the intermediate edges of the screen 14. The assembly means comprise bolts, indicated at 21 and 22 in FIG. 2, which pass through coincidental holes in the
EMI4.1
flanges and edges of the screen. If necessary, gas tightness can be improved by the presence of gaskets arranged between the flanges, one above and the other below the screen.
Reference numerals 23 to 25 of FIG. 2 denote screen stiffening bars which extend across the screen 14 and are fixed to the rear face thereof.
The microperforations of the separation screen 14 are distributed over the entire gas flow section of the casing 9 of the separator 3, that is to say
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
EMI5.1
that is to say that the area 14 extends perforated from the large discontinuity to the walls of the envelope 9. In addition, due to the sandwich-type external shape of the mounting of the screen 14 in the envelope 9, the upstream face of the screen 14 (relative to the direction of flow of the gas) is entirely cleared up to the walls of the envelope 9. By the term "cleared", is meant here the fact that there is no There are no obstacles on the upstream face of the screen, which can trap tobacco and allow it to be overheated or burned.
During the use of the tobacco expansion device which has just been described, no roasted or burning material of any kind was observed at the outlet of the flow line 12, even when humid air, at a temperature equal to or higher than 350oC, was delivered by the supply line 8.
Although it is preferable to use a microperforated sheet for the separation screen of the tobacco / air separator, it is also conceivable to use a wire mesh. If such a wire mesh is used, the edges of the mesh sandwiched between the flanges of the separator shell are advantageously made of ordinary sheet. To achieve this structure, the trellis is mounted in a frame
EMI5.2
flat metal, the arrangement being such that on the side of e 0 m its upstream face, the wire mesh extends without discontinuity to the walls of the enclosure of the separator.
According to another variant, the separator screen can be a slotted screen. A suitable slit screen is marketed by the Greening Company Limited of Warrington, Great Britain under the brand
EMI5.3
Filed Wire include a large number of spaced parallel bars, relias
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
by bracing wires which extend laterally. When used for the purposes of the present invention, a Wedge Wire screen must be installed in the separator so that its wires
EMI6.1
metal bracing are arranged at the downstream face of the screen.
Although the screen 14 of Figs. 1 and 2 is flat, one can imagine that the screen, and, correspondingly, the line of separation of the sections 15, 16 of the envelope, could be curved convexly, seen from the face d 'upstream of the screen.
It is clear to a specialist in this field that the screen can be held in place not only between external assembly flanges of the upper and lower sections of the envelope, but also between the flange of a section and the wall of the other section of the casing, or, alternatively, between the walls of the two sections of the casing without requiring external flanges. It is also possible that a screen fulfilling the objects of the invention can be suitably fixed inside a separator envelope which is not divided into two parts.
