Abstract

Un conjunto de carrocería y chasis de vehículo incluye un miembro estructural de canal cerrado que presenta una porción interior que se puede presurizar bajo ciertas condiciones, tales como durante un choque, para proveer mayor resistencia yabsorber energía. Un dispositivo de presurización se comunica con la porción interior y contiene una cantidad de un material químico el cual, cuando se excita correctamente, se expandirá rápidamente a forma gaseosa. Se provee un dispositivo deencendido u otra estructura para excitar el material químico contenido dentro del dispositivo de presurización bajo condiciones predeterminadas, tal como en el caso de ocurrir un choque. La expansión del material químico a forma gaseosa rápidamenteaumenta la presión de aire dentro del miembro estructural de canal cerrado, proporcionando de tal modo resistencia adicional al mismo para absorber energía durante el choque. Si bien la deformación del miembro estructural de canal cerrado puedeocurrir como resultado de la expansión del material químico, es el confinamiento de los gases altamente presurizados dentro del miembro estructural de canal cerrado lo que aumenta la resistencia del mismo durante el choque.
