Abstract

본 발명의 바람직한 실시예에 따른 리튬-황 전지용 전극은 원자층 증착 공정으로 탄소 기재의 표면에 형성된 금속산화물 쉘(shell)에 대하여 탄소열 환원 반응을 수행하여, 상기 탄소 기재의 표면에 금속산화물 나노입자층을 형성할 수 있다. 금속산화물 쉘의 적어도 일 부분이 환원적 승화를 통해 건식 에칭되어 형성된 금속산화물 나노입자층은 탄소 기재와 화학적으로 고정화되고, 이의 표면에 3차원 입자 형태의 낮은 막 밀도를 갖는 리튬설파이드(Li2S) 성장을 유도하여 높은 황 로딩량 및 희박 전해질 조건에서도 높은 방전용량과 빠른 전환속도를 나타낼 수 있다.

Description

금속산화물 나노입자층을 포함하는 리튬-황 전지용 전극, 이의 제조방법 및 이를 이용한 리튬-황 전지
본 발명은 리튬-황 전지에 관한 것으로, 자세하게는 초고밀도 나노입자층을 적용한 전극을 포함하는 리튬-황 전지에 관한 것이다.
본 연구는 아래의 대한민국 국가연구개발사업 지원을 받아 수행된 것이다.

리튬-황 전지(Li-S battery)는 이론상으로 높은 에너지 밀도(약 2,600 Whkg) 및 높은 비용량(약 1,675 mAh g-1)를 갖는 차세대 에너지 저장 시스템이다. 하지만, 충방전 사이클 동안 형성되는 중간체인 리튬 폴리설파이드(LiPSs)가 전해질에 대해 높은 용해도를 가지며 열역학적으로 불리한 다단계 반응으로 인해 느린 반응성을 갖는 등 문제들이 있어 이론적 최대 용량을 발현시키지 못해 전지의 성능이 떨어지는 한계점이 있다. 이러한 문제를 극복하기 위한 노력으로, 탄소나노튜브(CNT), 그래핀, 메조포러스 탄소(mesoporous carbon) 등의 탄소기반 물질에 리튬 폴리설파이드(LiPSs)의 흡착 및 전기화학적 전환을 촉진하는 활성 물질로서 금속 화합물 전기촉매(electrocatalyst)를 포함시키는 방법 등이 연구되어왔다. 그러나 더 높은 에너지 밀도를 갖는 전지의 개발을 위해 높은 황 로딩량을 갖는 전극을 개발하려는 시도가 활발히 진행되고 있다.
본 발명은 상술한 문제를 해결하기 위하여 착안된 것으로, 높은 황 로딩량을 갖는 전극에서도 전지의 성능이 유지되는 리튬-황 전지를 포함할 수 있다.
상기 기술적 과제를 달성하기 위해 본 발명의 바람직한 예에 따른 초고밀도 나노입자 형성을 적용한 리튬-황 전지용 전극의 제조방법은,
챔버 내부에 탄소 기재를 위치시키고 2종 이상의 전구체를 주입하여 원자층 증착 공정을 수행하여 상기 탄소 기재의 표면에 금속산화물 쉘(shell)을 형성하는 단계(S01); 및
상기 금속산화물 쉘(shell)이 형성된 탄소 기재에 대하여 탄소열 환원 반응을 수행하여, 상기 탄소 기재의 표면에 금속산화물 나노입자층을 형성하는 단계(S02);를 포함할 수 있다.
상기 금속산화물 나노입자층은 상기 금속산화물 쉘(shell)의 적어도 일 부분이 환원적 승화(reductive sublimation)를 통해 건식 에칭(dry etching)되어 형성되는 것일 수 있다.
상기 탄소열 환원 반응을 통한 상기 금속산화물 쉘(shell)의 건식 에칭(dry etching)은 하기 반응식 1로 표시되는 반응으로 수행되는 것일 수 있다:

상기 반응식 1에서, M은 Zn, Fe, Ni, Cu, W, Ti, Mn, Al, Ti, Co 및 이들의 조합 중 선택되는 어느 하나를 포함하고, x 및 y는 독립적인 임의의 정수이다.
상기 탄소열 환원 반응 시간이 증가할수록 상기 금속산화물 나노입자층의 두께는 감소하고, 상기 금속산화물 나노입자층의 막 밀도는 감소할 수 있다.
상기 탄소열 환원 반응을 통하여 형성된 금속산화물 나노입자층은 상기 탄소 기재와 화학적으로 고정화되는 것일 수 있다.
상기 리튬-황 전지용 전극의 금속산화물 함량은 전체 중량에 대비하여 5 내지 25 wt%일 수 있다.
상기 리튬-황 전지용 전극의 황 로딩량은 5 내지 20 mg cm-2 일 수 있다.
상기 탄소열 환원 반응은 제1 온도 범위에서 제1 열처리 및 제2 온도 범위에서 제2 열처리를 수행하는 것이고, 상기 제1 온도 범위보다 상기 제2 온도 범위가 더 높으며, 상기 제2 온도 범위는 300 ℃ 이상일 수 있다.
상기 탄소 기재는 탄소나노튜브, 탄소 섬유, 그래핀 섬유, 카본 블랙, 아세틸렌 블랙, 케첸 블랙, 채널 블랙, 퍼네이스 블랙, 램프 블랙, 서멀 블랙, 덴카 블랙, 흑연, 활성 탄소, 탄소나노리본, 탄소나노벨트, 탄소나노막대, 메조포러스 탄소(mesoporous carbon), 슈퍼P(Super P), 이들의 유도체 및 이들의 조합 중 선택되는 어느 하나를 포함할 수 있다.
상기 기술적 과제를 달성하기 위해 본 발명의 바람직한 예에 따른 초고밀도 나노입자 형성을 적용한 리튬-황 전지용 전극은, 탄소 기재; 및 상기 탄소 기재의 표면에 형성된 금속화합물 나노입자층;을 포함하되, 상기 금속화합물 나노입자층은 상기 탄소 기재의 표면에 화학적으로 고정화되는 것을 특징으로 할 수 있다.
상기 리튬-황 전지용 전극은 전지의 충방전 과정에서 3차원(3D) 입자 형태의 리튬설파이드 성장을 유도할 수 있다.
상기 금속화합물 나노입자층은 상기 탄소 기재의 표면에 원자층 증착 방법으로 형성된 금속산화물 쉘(shell)의 적어도 일 부분이 환원적 승화(reductive sublimation)를 통해 건식 에칭(dry etching)되어 형성된 것일 수 있다.
상기 리튬-황 전지용 전극의 금속산화물 함량은 전체 중량에 대비하여 5 내지 25 wt%일 수 있다.
상기 리튬-황 전지용 전극의 황 로딩량은 5 내지 20 mg cm-2 일 수 있다.
상기 기술적 과제를 달성하기 위해 본 발명의 바람직한 예에 따른 초고밀도 나노입자 형성을 적용한 리튬-황 전지는,
탄소 기재 및 상기 탄소 기재의 표면에 형성된 금속화합물 나노입자층을 포함하고, 상기 금속화합물 나노입자층은 상기 탄소 기재의 표면에 화학적으로 고정화되는 전술한 바와 같은 전극을 포함하는 양극;
상기 양극과 대향하여 배치되고, 리튬 금속 또는 리튬 합금을 포함하는 음극;
상기 양극과 상기 음극의 사이에 배치되어 고형의 폴리설파이드 이동을 억제하는 분리막; 및
상기 양극과 상기 음극 사이에 개재되어 리튬 이온 및 황 이온을 포함하며 이온의 이동통로가 되는 전해액;을 포함할 수 있다.
상기 양극은 전지의 충방전 과정에서 3차원(3D) 입자 형태의 리튬설파이드(Li2S) 성장이 유도될 수 있다.
상기 금속화합물 나노입자층은 상기 탄소 기재의 표면에 원자층 증착 방법으로 형성된 금속산화물 쉘(shell)의 적어도 일 부분이 환원적 승화(reductive sublimation)를 통해 건식 에칭(dry etching)되어 형성된 것일 수 있다.
상기 양극 내 금속산화물 함량은 양극 전체 중량에 대비하여 5 내지 25 wt%일 수 있다.
상기 양극의 황 로딩량은 5 내지 20 mg cm-2 일 수 있다.
상기와 같은 본 발명에 따르면, 본 발명의 바람직한 실시예에 따른 리튬-황 전지용 전극은 원자층 증착 공정으로 탄소 기재의 표면에 형성된 금속산화물 쉘(shell)에 대하여 탄소열 환원 반응을 수행하여, 상기 탄소 기재의 표면에 금속산화물 나노입자층을 형성할 수 있다. 금속산화물 쉘의 적어도 일 부분이 환원적 승화를 통해 건식 에칭되어 형성된 금속산화물 나노입자층은 탄소 기재와 화학적으로 고정화되고, 전지의 충방전 과정에서 이의 표면에 3차원 리튬 폴리설파이드 성장을 유도하여 높은 황 로딩량 및 높은 방전용량과 빠른 전환속도를 나타낼 수 있다.
본 발명의 효과는 이상에서 언급한 것으로 제한되지 않으며, 명세서 전반의 기재로부터 통상의 기술자에게 명확하게 이해될 수 있으나 명시적으로 언급되지 않은 다른 효과들 역시 포함한다.
도 1은 본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 탄소열 환원법을 사용한 금속화합물 나노입자층의 제조방법을 나타낸 모식도이다.

도 4는 본 발명의 제조예 1 내지 3에 따른 탄소열 환원반응을 통해 산화아연(ZnO) 나노입자층이 형성된 탄소나노튜브에 대한 (a) 열중량분석(TGA; Thermogravimetric analysis) 및 (b) 산화아연(ZnO) 나노입자의 함량을 나타낸 그래프이다.
도 5는 본 발명의 비교예 1 및 제조예 1 내지 3에 따른 탄소열 환원반응을 통해 산화아연(ZnO) 나노입자층이 형성된 탄소나노튜브 전극에 대한 (a) 비표면적을 비교한 그래프 및 (b) BET(Brunauer Emmett Teller) 흡착 등온선 결과이다.

탄소열 환원법을 사용한 금속화합물 나노입자층이 형성된 탄소 기재를 포함하는 리튬-황 전지용 전극의 제조방법
도 1은 본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 탄소열 환원법을 사용한 금속화합물 나노입자층의 제조방법을 나타낸 모식도이다.
도 1을 참조하면, 리튬-황 전지용 전극의 제조방법은 챔버 내부에 탄소 기재를 위치시키고 2종 이상의 전구체를 주입하여 원자층 증착 공정을 수행하고 상기 탄소 기재의 표면에 금속산화물 쉘(shell)을 형성하는 단계(S01)를 포함할 수 있다.
상기 탄소 기재는 탄소나노튜브, 탄소 섬유, 그래핀 섬유, 카본 블랙, 아세틸렌 블랙, 케첸 블랙, 채널 블랙, 퍼네이스 블랙, 램프 블랙, 서멀 블랙, 덴카 블랙, 흑연, 활성 탄소, 탄소나노리본, 탄소나노벨트, 탄소나노막대, 메조포러스 탄소(mesoporous carbon), 슈퍼P(Super P), 이들의 유도체 및 이들의 조합 중 선택되는 어느 하나를 포함할 수 있고, 구체적으로, 상기 탄소 기재는 탄소나노튜브일 수 있으나, 이에 제한되는 것은 아니다.
상기 원자층 증착 공정(ALD; Atomic layer deposition)을 통해 탄소 기재의 표면에 금속산화물 쉘(shell)을 형성할 수 있다. 상기 금속산화물 쉘(shell)의 두께는 후술하는 금속산화물 나노입자층의 두께보다 두터운 금속산화물 막(film)으로서, 후술하는 탄소열 환원 반응을 통해 부분적으로 에칭되어 나노입자 형태의 금속산화물 입자를 형성할 수 있다.
다음으로, 상기 금속산화물 쉘(shell)이 형성된 탄소 기재에 대하여 탄소열 환원 반응을 수행하여, 상기 탄소 기재의 표면에 금속산화물 나노입자층을 형성하는 단계(S02)를 포함할 수 있다.
탄소열 환원법(Carbothermal reduction)은 금속산화물 쉘의 적어도 일 부분이 환원적 승화(reductive sublimation)를 통해 에칭되어 금속산화물 나노입자층을 형성하는 것으로, 상기 환원적 승화를 통한 금속산화물 쉘의 에칭(dry etching) 과정은 하기 반응식 1의 반응으로 나타낼 수 있다.

상기 반응식 1에서, M은 Zn, Fe, Ni, Cu, W, Ti, Mn, Al, Ti, Co 및 이들의 조합 중 선택되는 어느 하나를 포함하고, x 및 y는 독립적인 임의의 정수이다.
일 구체예에서, 상기 M은 Zn일 수 있으나, 이에 제한되는 것은 아니다.
상기 MxOy은 상술한 원자층 증착 공정을 통해 형성된 금속산화물 쉘(shell)일 수 있다.
상기 금속산화물 쉘(shell)의 적어도 일 부분이 환원적 승화(reductive sublimation)되어 기상으로 제거되고, 나머지 부분은 입자 형태로 남아 금속산화물 나노입자층을 형성할 수 있다. 따라서, 두꺼운 금속산화물 쉘을 에칭하는 화학식 1의 단계를 수행하는 시간이 길어질수록 금속산화물 나노입자층의 두께, 즉 금속산화물 나노입자의 크기가 감소할 수 있다.
상기 탄소열 환원 반응에 적용되는 열처리는 제1 온도 범위에서 제1 열처리 및 제2 온도 범위에서 제2 열처리를 수행하는 것일 수 있다. 구체적으로, 상기 제1 온도 범위보다 상기 제2 온도 범위가 더 높으며, 상기 제2 온도 범위는 300 ℃ 이상일 수 있다. 상기 제1 열처리는 금속산화물 결정의 안정화 처리가 가능한 범위 내의 온도에서 수행될 수 있다. 한편, 상기 제2 열처리는 탄소열 환원 반응이 수행되기 위한 범위의 온도에서 수행되는 것으로서, 특히 상기 제2 열처리는 종래의 일반적인 방법에서 사용하는 고온, 예컨대 약 800 내지 900 ℃ 열처리 온도와 비교하여 비교적 낮은 온도 내지 유사 온도로서, 일 구체예에서 300 ℃ 이상에서 수행되는 것일 수 있다. 상기 제2 열처리가 수행되는 온도 범위가 300 ℃ 미만인 경우 탄소열 환원 반응이 수행되지 않을 수 있다.
금속산화물 나노입자의 크기는 탄소열 환원 반응(열처리) 시간이 증가할수록 감소하고, 금속산화물 나노입자층의 막 밀도는 탄소열 환원 반응(열처리) 시간이 증가할수록 낮아질 수 있다.
이러한 탄소열 환원 반응을 통해 제조된 금속산화물 나노입자층을 포함하는 탄소 기재의 제조방법은, 최종 구조의 형태가 금속산화물 나노입자가 탄소 기재의 표면에 단순히 물리적인 인력에 의해 부착된 것으로 보이지만, 일반적으로 나노입자를 합성하는 졸-겔, 용매열 합성법 등의 용매 기반 합성법으로 선 제조한 나노입자를 탄소 기재에 후속적으로 코팅하는 과정과 비교하여, 탄소 기재에 대하여 화학적 고정화되므로 부착력(binding)이 훨씬 더 강하고 견고하게 형성될 수 있다.
특히, 원자층 증착 공정에 의해 형성된 금속산화물 박막을 환원하여 건식 공정으로 나노입자를 형성하는 건식 나노입자층 제조방법은, 기존의 용액 합성 및/또는 용액 공정으로는 도달하기 어려운, 탄소 기재에 밀집되고 초고밀도의 물성을 가지며 탄소 기재와 화학적으로 고정된 특징을 갖는 막을 제조할 수 있다. 이러한 방법으로 제조된 금속산화물 나노입자층은 황(S) 전환 속도에서 탁월한 성능을 나타내며, 탄소-금속산화물 나노입자 간의 계면에서 황(S) 전환을 촉진하는 활성 사이트로 작용할 수 있다.
일반적으로 알려진 나노입자를 선 합성 후 코팅하는 용액 기반 방법(solution coating)은 나노입자의 응집(aggregation) 특성에 의해 얇고 균일한 나노입자층을 형성하기에 어려움이 있다. 반면, 본 발명의 바람직한 실시예에 따른 탄소열 환원 반응으로 형성된 나노입자층은 나노입자가 뭉쳐져 있지 않고 나노 두께의 층에 균질하게 분산된 형태의 코팅층 제조가 가능할 수 있다. 다만, 이렇게 균질하게 분산된 형태의 코팅층은 표면이 매끈한 막 형태가 아닌, 삼차원 입자 형태의 울퉁불퉁한 리튬설파이드 나노입자를 제조할 수 있다.
금속화합물 나노입자층이 형성된 탄소 기재를 포함하는 리튬-황 전지용 전극 및 이를 포함하는 리튬-황 전지
본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 리튬-황 전지용 전극은 탄소 기재; 및 상기 탄소 기재의 표면에 형성된 금속화합물 나노입자층;을 포함할 수 있고, 특히 상기 금속화합물 나노입자층은 상기 탄소 기재의 표면에 화학적으로 고정화될 수 있다.
금속산화물 나노입자층이 표면에 형성된 탄소 기재를 리튬-황 전지용 전극으로 적용할 시, 전해질 내 용해된 리튬 폴리설파이드(LiPS)가 상기 금속산화물 나노입자층에 흡착되어 탄소 기재 표면으로 확산되며 전지의 충방전 과정에서 3차원(3D) 입자 형태의 리튬설파이드(Li2S) 성장을 유도할 수 있다. 이때, 일반적인 일반적으로 나노입자를 합성하는 졸-겔, 용매열 합성법 등의 용매 기반 합성법으로 선 제조한 나노입자를 탄소 기재에 후속적으로 코팅하는 과정과 비교하여, 탄소 기재에 밀집되고 초고밀도의 물성을 가지며 탄소 기재와 화학적으로 고정된 특징을 갖는 막을 갖게 되므로, 3차원(3D) 입자 형태의 리튬설파이드(Li2S) 성장이 유도되어 매우 높은 방전 용량과 빠른 전환 속도를 나타낼 수 있다. 구체적으로, 상기 3차원(3D) 입자 형태의 리튬설파이드 성장은 3차원적 클러스터형 입자 형태로 리튬설파이드(Li2S) 성장이 촉진되는 것으로서, 높은 농도의 S4 2-가 주로 용액상 불균형 반응(solution-phase disproportionation reaction; 2S4 2- → S2- + S7 2-)을 유도하여 S2- 가 벌크 확산을 통해 3차원(3D) 입자 형태의 클러스터형 입자 형태로 Li2S 성장을 촉진하는 것을 의미할 수 있다.
반면, 두꺼운 쉘(shell) 형태 및/또는 낮은 밀도의 금속산화물 나노입자층이 형성된 탄소 전극에서는 LiPS 흡착 속도는 빠르지만, 금속산화물 나노입자/탄소 계면(interface) 노출이 제한되어 LiPS 흡착 및 전환(adsorption/conversion)의 속도 저하를 유도하므로 풍부한 S4 2- 환경이 조성될 수 없어서 주로 2차원(2D) 막 형태로 Li2S 성장이 유도될 수 있다.
또한, 상기 금속화합물 나노입자층은 상기 탄소 기재의 표면에 화학적으로 고정화될 수 있다.
상기 리튬-황 전지용 전극의 금속산화물 함량은 전체 중량에 대비하여 5 내지 25 wt%일 수 있고, 구체적으로 6 내지 21 wt%일 수 있으나, 이에 제한되는 것은 아니다.
상기 리튬-황 전지용 전극의 황 로딩량은 5 내지 20 mg cm-2 일 수 있고, 구체적으로 7 내지 15 mg cm-2 일 수 있고, 더욱 구체적으로 9 내지 13 mg cm-2 일 수 있으나, 이에 제한되는 것은 아니다. 이는 일반적으로 5 mg cm-2 내외의 황 로딩량을 갖는 경우와 달리 탄소열 환원 공정을 통해 형성된 금속산화물 나노입자층을 갖는 전극은 전지의 충방전 과정에서 전극의 표면에 3차원 리튬설파이드(Li2S) 성장을 유도하므로 높은 황 로딩량, 높은 방전용량, 빠른 전환속도 및 우수한 사이클 용량 유지율을 나타낼 수 있다.
이하, 본 발명을 실시 예 및 비교 예를 이용하여 더욱 상세하게 설명하고자 한다. 그러나 하기의 실시 예 및 비교 예는 본 발명의 예증을 위한 것으로, 본 발명의 범위가 이에 국한되는 것은 아니다.
제조예 1: 12 nm 두께의 산화아연 쉘(ZnO shell)을 이용하여 탄소열 환원법을 사용하여 제조된 산화아연(ZnO) 나노입자층이 형성된 탄소나노튜브(ZnO nanoparticle coated CNT) 전극
먼저, 탄소 기재로서 탄소나노튜브(CNT)를 준비한다. 전구체로서 디에틸아연((C2H5)2Zn) 및 수증기를 사용하고 원자층 증착 공정 온도는 80 ℃로 설정하였다. 원자층 증착(ALD; Atomic layer deposition) 챔버 내에 탄소 기재를 위치시켜 산화아연 쉘(ZnO shell)을 합성하였으며, ALD 공정 한 사이클은 디에틸아연((C2H5)2Zn)에 20초간 노출한 후, 10초간 질소(N2) 가스로 퍼지하고, 수증기(H2O)에 20초간 노출한 후, 다시 10초간 질소(N2) 가스로 퍼지하는 과정으로 120회 진행되었다. ALD 사이클 당 산화아연 쉘(ZnO shell)의 성장율은 대략 0.1 nm/cycle이었다. 이때, ALD 공정을 통해 제조된 산화아연 쉘(ZnO shell)의 두께는 약 12 nm이다. 이후, 200 ℃에서 2시간 동안 나노입자 결정 안정화를 진행하고, 350 ℃에서 2시간 동안 아르곤 분위기 하에서 열처리(Carbothermal reduction; 탄소열 환원) 단계를 진행하였다. 이때, 산화아연 쉘(ZnO shell)의 일 부분이 환원적 승화(reductive sublimation)를 통해 건식 에칭(dry etching)되어 나노입자층 형태로 제조되었다. 이로써, 산화아연(ZnO) 나노입자층이 표면에 형성된 탄소나노튜브(ZnO nanoparticle coated CNT) 전극을 제조하였다. 이때, 산화아연(ZnO) 나노입자층의 두께는 약 10 nm이다.
LiPS의 흡착은 2 mM의 Li2S6 용액에 20 mg의 양극 기판을 3시간 동안 담가서 수행되었다.
제조예 2: 6 nm 두께의 산화아연 쉘(ZnO shell)을 이용하여 탄소열 환원법을 사용하여 제조된 산화아연(ZnO) 나노입자층이 형성된 탄소나노튜브(ZnO nanoparticle coated CNT) 전극
ALD 사이클이 60회 진행된 것을 제외하고는 제조예 1과 동일한 방법으로 산화아연 나노입자가 형성된 탄소나노튜브(ZnO nanoparticle coated CNT) 전극을 제조하였다. 이때, ALD 공정을 통해 제조된 산화아연 쉘(ZnO shell)의 두께는 약 6 nm이며, 건식 에칭이 수행된 후 산화아연(ZnO) 나노입자층의 두께는 약 5 nm 이다.
제조예 3: 18 nm 두께의 산화아연 쉘(ZnO shell)을 이용하여 탄소열 환원법을 사용하여 제조된 산화아연(ZnO) 나노입자층이 형성된 탄소나노튜브(ZnO nanoparticle coated CNT) 전극
ALD 사이클이 180회 진행된 것을 제외하고는 제조예 1과 동일한 방법으로 산화아연 나노입자가 형성된 탄소나노튜브(ZnO nanoparticle coated CNT) 전극을 제조하였다. 이때, ALD 공정을 통해 제조된 산화아연 쉘(ZnO shell)의 두께는 18 nm이며, 건식 에칭이 수행된 후 산화아연(ZnO) 나노입자층의 두께는 약 15 내지 17 nm이다.
비교예 1: 산화아연(ZnO) 나노입자층이 형성되지 않은 탄소나노튜브(ZnO nanoparticle coated CNT) 전극
탄소 기재로서 아무 처리하지 않은 탄소나노튜브(CNT)를 사용하였다.
도 2는 본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 (a) 탄소나노튜브(CNT), (b) 산화아연 쉘(ZnO shell)이 형성된 탄소나노튜브 및 (c) 산화아연 나노입자층이 형성된 탄소나노튜브 전극의 주사전자현미경(SEM) 결과이고, (d) 6 nm 두께, (e) 12 nm 두께 및 (f) 18 nm 두께의 산화아연 쉘(ZnO shell)이 형성된 탄소나노튜브에 대한 투과전자현미경(TEM)(삽도: 고대비 투과전자현미경(High-contrast TEM))(스케일 바: 25 nm) 결과이다.
도 2(a) 내지 도 2(c)를 참조하면, 산화아연 나노입자 개당 평균 크기는 약 5 nm 내지 10 nm인 것을 확인할 수 있으며, 탄소나노튜브(CNT), 산화아연 쉘(ZnO shell)이 형성된 탄소나노튜브 및 산화아연 나노입자층이 형성된 탄소나노튜브 전극의 표면을 관찰한 결과, 원자층 증착 방법을 통해 탄소나노튜브의 표면에 코팅된 산화아연 쉘(ZnO shell)은 두터운 산화아연(ZnO) 막인 것을 확인할 수 있으며, 상기 산화아연 쉘(ZnO shell)의 막 형태가 부분적으로 에칭되어 나노입자 형태로 남아있는 나노입자층이 형성된 것을 확인할 수 있다.
도 2(d) 내지 도 2(f)를 참조하면, 6 nm, 12 nm 및 18 nm의 두께로 형성된 산화아연 쉘의 두께가 얇을수록 낮은 밀도로 엉성하게 형성된 나노입자층을 제조하고, 산화아연 쉘의 두께가 두꺼울수록 높은 밀도의 오히려 응집된 것처럼 보이는 나노입자층을 형성하고 있는 것을 확인할 수 있다. 또한, 12 nm 두께의 산화아연 쉘로부터 제조된 나노입자층이 형성된 전극에서 산화아연(ZnO) 나노입자가 잘 분산되고 응집이 없는 균질한 막을 형성한 것을 확인할 수 있다.
도 3은 본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 산화아연 나노입자층이 형성된 탄소나노튜브 전극에 대하여 열처리(탄소열 환원반응) 시간에 따른 주사전자현미경(SEM) 사진이다. (스케일 바: 50 nm)
도 3을 참조하면, 탄소열 환원반응 시간이 증가할수록(a, b 및 c의 순서) 산화아연 쉘(ZnO)의 건식 에칭 과정이 더 많이 수행되므로 산화아연 나노입자의 크기, 산화아연 나노입자층의 두께 및/또는 산화아연 나노입자층의 막 밀도가 감소하는 것을 확인할 수 있다.
도 4는 본 발명의 제조예 1 내지 3에 따른 탄소열 환원반응을 통해 산화아연(ZnO) 나노입자층이 형성된 탄소나노튜브에 대한 (a) 열중량분석(TGA; Thermogravimetric analysis) 및 (b) 산화아연(ZnO) 나노입자의 함량을 나타낸 그래프이다.
도 4를 참조하면, 열중량분석(TGA) 분석을 통해 6 nm(제조예 2), 12 nm(제조예 1) 및 18 nm(제조예 3)의 두께로 형성된 산화아연 쉘로부터 제조된 나노입자층을 포함하는 전극에서 산화아연(ZnO)의 함량은 전체 중량에 대비하여 각각 6.2 wt%, 12.2 wt% 및 19.4 wt%인 것을 도출할 수 있다.
도 5는 본 발명의 비교예 1 및 제조예 1 내지 3에 따른 탄소열 환원반응을 통해 산화아연(ZnO) 나노입자층이 형성된 탄소나노튜브 전극에 대한 (a) 비표면적을 비교한 그래프 및 (b) BET(Brunauer Emmett Teller) 흡착 등온선 결과이다.
도 5를 참조하면, 아무런 처리를 수행하지 않은 탄소나노튜브(비교예 1)의 BET 면적(시료 표면의 비표면적, Surface Area)이 약 30 m2/g인 것을 고려하면, 탄소열 환원반응을 통해 산화아연(ZnO) 나노입자층이 형성된 탄소나노튜브(제조예 1 내지 3)의 BET 면적은 약 45 내지 60 m2/g으로 더 큰 것을 확인할 수 있으며, 그 중 두께가 12 nm인 산화아연(ZnO) 쉘로부터 제조된 나노입자층이 형성된 탄소나노튜브(제조예 1)의 BET 면적이 약 60 m2/g으로 가장 큰 것을 확인할 수 있다. 따라서, 산화아연(ZnO) 나노입자층의 형성에 의해 비표면적이 증가된 결과를 확인할 수 있으며, 또한 두께 12 nm 산화아연 쉘로부터 제조된 나노입자층의 경우 높은 비표면적을 가짐을 알 수 있다.
도 6은 본 발명의 비교예 1 및 제조예 1 내지 3에 따른 탄소열 환원반응을 통해 산화아연(ZnO) 나노입자층이 형성된 탄소나노튜브 전극에 대하여 전해질 용액(2 mM Li2S6)에 담구고 3시간 후의 (a) 전해질 용액의 UV-vis 스펙트럼(삽도: 전해질에 담근 전극의 사진), (b) LiPS(Li2S4) 흡착량을 나타낸 그래프, (c) DFT 계산을 통한 ZnO와 CNT 기판(그래핀으로 대체)에서의 리튬 폴리설파이드(LiPS) 흡착 결합 에너지 계산 결과(삽도: LiPS 분자의 최적화된 원자 이미지), (d) LiPS 흡착 후 S 2p XPS 결과, (e) 대칭 순환전압전류법(CV, Cyclic voltammetry) 곡선, (f) 비대칭 순환전압전류법(CV, Cyclic voltammetry) 곡선 및 (g) 전기화학 임피던스 스펙트럼(EIS, Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy) 결과이다.
도 6(a) 및 도 6(b)를 참조하면, 리튬-황 전지용 전극을 리튬 폴리설파이드(LiPS) 전해질에 담구고 전해액의 색 변화에 따라 LiPS 흡착 정도를 확인할 수 있다. 아무런 처리하지 않은 탄소나노튜브 전극(Bare로 표시)과 대비하여, ZnO 나노입자층이 형성된 탄소나노튜브 전극은 두께에 관계없이 모두 LiPS 전해질을 흡착하여 전해액의 색이 연하게 나타났으며, UV-Vis 흡수 스펙트럼을 통해 S4 2-의 흡수를 나타내는 420 nm 파장에서의 흡광도를 측정하여 비교한 결과, 그 중 12 nm 두께를 갖는 ZnO 쉘로부터 제조된 나노입자층이 형성된 탄소나노튜브 전극(12nm-ZnO NP로 표기)의 흡광도가 가장 낮게 나타나므로 LiPS(Li2S4)의 흡착은 가장 많이 수행됨을 확인할 수 있다. 특히, 6 nm-ZnO NP (제조예 1)의 전극은 Bare(CNT, 비교예 1)와 비교하여 약 2.03배, 6 nm-ZnO NP(제조예 2)와 비교하여 약 1.3배 높은 흡착량을 나타내는 것을 확인할 수 있다.
도 6(c)를 참조하면, DFT 계산을 활용하여 ZnO 및 CNT 기판의 LiPS 흡착에 대한 결합에너지를 비교할 수 있다. CNT 기판은 계산의 편의성을 위해 그래핀 시트 기판으로 대체되었다. ZnO 기판의 (100) 평면과 그래핀 시트를 사용하는 CNT 기판을 모델링한 결과, ZnO 기판은 CNT 기판의 결합 에너지보다 약 6배 더 높은 Li2S4에 대한 결합 에너지를 나타내며, 이는 폴리설파이드(LiPS)에 대하여 ZnO 표면이 화학적으로 친화적인 성질을 가지는 것을 의미할 수 있다. 다른 종류의 LiPS 분자들, 예컨대 Li2S8, Li2S6, 더욱 구체적으로 Li2S, Li2S2, Li2S4, Li2S6, Li2S8 및 S8에 대하여도 탄소 기반의 기판(그래핀, CNT)에 비해 ZnO 기판에서 LiPS 결합 에너지가 약 5 내지 16배 더 높은 것을 확인할 수 있다.
도 6(d)를 참조하면, 폴리설파이드(LiPS)가 흡착된 ZnO NP 기판의 S 2p XPS 스펙트럼을 Bare CNT 기판(비교예 1)의 스펙트럼과 비교하여 폴리설파이드(LiPS) 분자와의 화학적 상호 작용을 분석할 수 있다. Bare CNT 기판(비교예 1)의 스펙트럼은 160~167 eV에서 강한 강도 피크를 표시하며, 이는 Li2S4의 물리적 흡착을 나타내는 터미널 S(ST -1; 161.38 eV, 162.34 eV) 및 브리징 S(SB 0; 163.57 eV, 164.61 eV)에 해당하는 피크로 디콘볼루션(deconvolution)될 수 있다. 반면, ZnO NP 기판의 스펙트럼은 165~172 eV에서 상대적으로 강한 피크를 특징으로 하며, 이는 폴리티오네이트(Polythionate complex; 169.70 eV, 170.51 eV) 및 티오황산염(Thiosulphate, Thiosulfate; 167.39 eV, 168.65 eV) 피크로 분리되는 것을 알 수 있다. 이는 산화아연(ZnO) 표면에서 티오황산염-폴리티오네이트 전환에 의해 매개되는 폴리설파이드(LiPS)의 화학적 고정화를 나타낼 수 있다. 따라서, 산화아연(ZnO) 표면에서 티오황산염-폴리티오네이트 전환을 통해 나타나는 피크는 ZnO에서 폴리설파이드(LiPS)과 화학적 결합을 형성함을 나타낼 수 있다. 탄소 기재에 화학적으로 고정화된 산화아연 나노입자층은 후술하는 용액 합성법으로 형성된 ZnO 나노입자를 코팅하는 방법으로 형성된 나노입자 코팅층과 비교하여 부착력이 더 높을 수 있다.
도 6(e) 및 도 6(f)를 참조하여 각 산화환원 피크에 대해 Randles-Sevcik 방정식으로 분석한 Li 확산도를 비교하면, 12 nm-ZnO NP 전극이 6 nm-ZnO NP 및 18 nm-ZnO NP 전극보다 더 높은 확산도를 가짐을 확인할 수 있다. 상기 Randles-Sevcik 방정식은 하기 식 1로 표시할 수 있다.

상기 식 1에서, Ip는 CV 곡선의 피크 전류(peak current), n은 반응에 참여한 전자 수, ν는 스캔 속도, D는 확산계수, A는 작동전극의 면적, C는 전해질 농도이다.
도 6(g)을 참조하면, 전기화학 임피던스 스펙트럼 결과의 반원 크기를 통해 기판과 전극의 전하 전달 저항을 비교할 수 있다. 제조예 1(12 nm-ZnO NP로 표기)의 경우 가장 작은 반원 크기를 나타내므로, 기판과 전극의 전하 전달 저항이 가장 작은 것을 확인할 수 있다.
도 7은 본 발명의 비교예 1 및 제조예 1 내지 3에 따른 탄소열 환원반응을 통해 산화아연(ZnO) 나노입자층이 형성된 탄소나노튜브 전극에 대한 타펠 플롯(Tafel plot)이다.
도 7을 참조하면, 타펠 플롯(Tafel plot)의 기울기를 통해 LiPS-Li2S 전환의 동역학을 비교할 수 있으며, 제조예 1(12 nm-ZnO NP로 표기)의 경우 가장 낮은 기울기를 보여 가장 빠른 동역학을 나타내는 것을 확인할 수 있다.
도 8은 본 발명의 비교예 1 및 제조예 1 내지 3에 따른 탄소열 환원반응을 통해 산화아연(ZnO) 나노입자층이 형성된 탄소나노튜브 전극에 대하여 (a~d) LiPS-Li2S 전환의 정전위 전류-시간(i-t) 곡선, (e~h) 정규화된 전류-시간(i-t) 곡선(실선)과 2D 및 3D 전기증착 모델을 기반으로 한 프로파일(점선) 및 (i~l) 침전 방전 후 ex-situ 주사전자현미경(SEM) 사진(스케일바: 500 nm)이다.
도 8(a~d) 및 도 8(e~h)를 참조하면, 전류-시간(i-t) 곡선은 크로노전류측정법 (Chronoamperometry)을 사용하였고, 정전위 방전 (potentiostatic discharge) 조건 하에서 리튬-황 전지 셀 내 전극에서 LiPS에서 Li2S로의 전환 단계는 전체 방전 용량의 75 %를 차지하며, 전해질 용액에 녹아 있는 LiPS에서 불용성 Li2S로의 전극 증착을 포함하는 확산 제한 과정(diffusion-limited process)이다. 전류-시간(i-t) 곡선은 초기에는 빠르게 전류가 감소하여 피크 전류에 도달한 후 점차 감소하는 패턴을 나타낸다. 피크 전류에 도달하기 전까지의 구간은 Li2S 핵 형성이 포화되는 구간이며, 이후 전류 감소는 Li2S 핵의 융합(coalescence) 동안 전극 표면의 부동태화가 진행되는 구간이다. 전류-시간(i-t) 곡선 아래의 면적(음영 처리된 부분)은 리튬설파이드(Li2S) 침전 과정(precipitation process)의 용량에 해당한다. 비교예 1(bare CNT) 전극은 낮은 피크 전류와 빠른 전류 감소를 보여 낮은 254 mAh g-1의 용량을 나타내는 반면, 제조예 1(12 nm-ZnO NP) 전극은 느린 전류 감소와 가장 높은 피크 전류를 보여 517 mAh g-1에 해당하는 가장 높은 증착 용량을 나타내는 것을 확인할 수 있다. 이는 제조예 1(12 nm-ZnO NP)의 용량은 제조예 2(6 nm-ZnO NP) 및 제조예 3(18 nm-ZnO NP) 보다 각각 약 38 % 및 약 45 % 높은 결과인 것을 확인할 수 있다. 이 용량 차이는 18 nm-ZnO NP에서 관찰된 상대적으로 낮은 전환 속도와 제조예 1(12 nm-ZnO NP) 전극에서의 3차원(3D) 입자 형태의 Li2S 성장으로 설명될 수 있다.
도 8(i~l)을 참조하면, 방전 후 탄소열 환원반응을 통해 산화아연(ZnO) 나노입자층이 형성된 탄소나노튜브 전극(제조예 1 내지 3, j~l)의 표면에는 Li2S 필름이 형성된 것을 알 수 있다. 2D 프로파일을 나타내는 성장(2D growth)은 다중 핵 생성 및 표면 확산에 의한 성장을 특징으로 균일한 필름이 제조되는 것을 의미한다. 제조예 2(6 nm-ZnO NP) 전극에서는 Li2S 층이 2D와 3D가 혼합된 프로파일로 나타나며 기판의 표면을 완전히 덮지 않게 형성되었다. 또한, 제조예 3(18 nm-ZnO NP) 전극은 비교예 1(bare CNT) 전극에서 관찰된 성장과 유사한 2D 성장을 나타내고, 표면에 ZnO 나노입자층이 거의 형성되지 않는 것을 확인할 수 있다. 한편, 제조예 1(12 nm-ZnO NP) 전극에서는 3D 황화물 성장 프로파일이 관찰되며, 기판의 표면에서 Li2S 나노입자가 전극 표면에 3D 형태를 나타내는 것을 확인할 수 있다. 따라서, 제조예 1(12 nm-ZnO NP) 전극은 3D 형태의 Li2S 성장을 유도하므로 매우 높은 방전 용량과 빠른 전환 속도를 제공할 수 있다.
도 9는 본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 리튬-황 전극의 전극(양극)에 대하여 (a) 초고밀도 산화아연(ZnO) 나노입자층(제조예 1), (b) 저밀도 산화아연(ZnO) 나노입자층(제조예 2) 및 (c) 두꺼운 산화아연(ZnO) 나노입자층(제조예 3)이 형성된 전극에서 LiPS 흡착 및 전환을 통한 Li2S의 성장을 설명하는 매커니즘을 나타낸 모식도이다.
도 9를 참조하면, 초고밀도 산화아연(ZnO) 나노입자가 코팅된 탄소나노튜브 전극(도 9(a), 제조예 1)에서는 빠른 LiPS 흡착 및 전환(adsorption/conversion)으로 인해 풍부한 S4 2-가 형성되어 확산성 3차원(구체적으로, 클러스터형 입자 형태)으로 Li2S 전착(electrodeposition)이 발생한다. 여기서, 높은 농도의 S4 2-는 주로 용액상 불균형 반응(solution-phase disproportionation reaction; 2S4 2- → S2- + S7 2-)을 유도하며, S2- 이 벌크 확산을 통해 3차원적 클러스터형 입자 형태로의 Li2S 성장을 촉진하게 된다. 한편, 저밀도 산화아연(ZnO) 나노입자가 코팅된 탄소나노튜브 전극(도 9(b), 제조예 2)에서는 빠른 LiPS 전환에도 불구하고 LiPS의 흡착 속도가 상대적으로 느려서 S4 2- 농도가 낮아져 용액상 반응을 주도하지 못하면서 2D Li2S의 전착(electrodeposition)을 나타낸다. 또한, 두꺼운 산화아연(ZnO) 나노입자층이 형성된 탄소나노튜브 전극에서는(도 9(c), 제조예 3) 두꺼운 ZnO shell 두께로 인해 충분히 에칭이 수행되지 않아, 산화아연(ZnO) 나노입자층의 높은 막 밀도를 가지므로 LiPS 흡착 속도는 빠르지만, 산화아연(ZnO) 나노입자/탄소(CNT) 계면(interface) 노출이 제한되어 LiPS 흡착 및 전환(adsorption/conversion)의 속도 저하를 유도하므로 풍부한 S4 2- 환경이 조성될 수 없어서 주로 2차원(2D) 막 형태의 Li2S 성장을 유도하게 된다.
실시예 1: 12 nm 두께의 산화아연(ZnO) 쉘로부터 제조된 나노입자층이 형성된 탄소나노튜브 전극을 리튬-황전지의 양극(cathode)으로 사용한 리튬-황 전지
제조예 1의 산화아연(ZnO) 나노입자층이 형성된 탄소나노튜브를 리튬-황전지의 양극(cathode)으로 사용하고, 이를 리튬 폴리설파이드(LiPS) 전해질 용액에 담궈 전극에 전해질을 흡착시킨다. 리튬 폴리설파이드(LiPS) 전해질 용액은 리튬 설파이드(Li2S) 및 황(S8)을DOL(1,3-Dioxolane) 및 DME(Dimethoxyethane)를 혼합(1:1 v/v%)한 혼합 유기용매에 8:5 몰비율(molar ratio)로 용해하여 2 mM 농도의 폴리설파이드 전해질을 제조하였다. 그 다음, 1 mm의 리튬 포일(Li foil)을 음극(anode)로 사용하고, 분리막(Celgard 2400)과 함께 조립하여 리튬-황 전지를 제조하여 배터리 테스트 시스템(Maccor 4300)에서 전지 성능을 측정하였다.
실시예 2: 6 nm 두께의 산화아연(ZnO) 쉘로부터 제조된 나노입자층이 형성된 탄소나노튜브 전극을 리튬-황전지의 양극(cathode)으로 사용한 리튬-황 전지
제조예 2의 산화아연(ZnO) 나노입자층이 형성된 탄소나노튜브를 리튬-황전지의 양극(cathode)으로 사용한 것을 제외하고는 실시예 1과 동일하게 리튬-황 전지를 제조하였다.
실시예 3: 12 nm 두께의 산화아연(ZnO) 쉘로부터 제조된 나노입자층이 형성된 탄소나노튜브 전극을 리튬-황전지의 양극(cathode)으로 사용한 리튬-황 전지
제조예 3의 산화아연(ZnO) 나노입자층이 형성된 탄소나노튜브를 리튬-황전지의 양극(cathode)으로 사용한 것을 제외하고는 실시예 1과 동일하게 리튬-황 전지를 제조하였다.
비교예 2: 아무 처리하지 않은 탄소나노튜브 전극을 리튬-황전지의 양극(cathode)으로 사용한 리튬-황 전지
비교예 1의 탄소나노튜브를 리튬-황전지의 양극(cathode)으로 사용한 것을 제외하고는 실시예 1과 동일하게 리튬-황 전지를 제조하였다.
도 10은 본 발명의 비교예 2 및 실시예 1 내지 3의 산화아연(ZnO) 나노입자층이 형성된 탄소나노튜브 전극을 양극(cathode)으로 사용한 리튬-황 전지에 대하여 (a) 정전류(Galvanostatic) 충방전 프로파일, (b) 0.03 C 전류 밀도에서 전압 분극(Polarization) 비교, (c) 다양한 율속(C-rate)에서의 비용량(Specific capacity) 비교, (d) 2 C에서 충방전 사이클 결과, (e) 10 C에서 충방전 사이클 300회 결과, (f) 2 C에서 충방전 사이클 500회 결과, (g) 10~12 mg cm-2 (E/S: 7 μL mg-1)의 매우 높은 황(S) 로딩량을 가지는 전극(12 nm-ZnO NP, 실시예 1)에서의 용량 비교 (삽도: 10 mg cm-2 황 로딩양을 갖는 전극을 적용한 리튬-황 전지를 사용하여 LED 전구를 구동한 사진), (h) 높은 황(S) 로딩량에서 다른 연구들과 용량 비교, (i) 풀 셀(full-cell) 조건에서 12 nm-ZnO NP 전극(실시예 1)을 적용할 시 충방전 프로파일 및 (j) 이의 사이클 성능 그래프이다.
도 10(a) 내지 도 10(c)을 참조하면, 산화아연(ZnO) 나노입자층이 형성된 탄소나노튜브 전극을 양극(cathode)으로 사용한 리튬-황 전지 및 미처리 탄소나노튜브 전극을 양극으로 사용한 리튬-황 전지에 대하여 전지의 특성을 비교하였다. 0.2 C에서 10 C까지 다양한 율속(C-rate)에 대한 용량을 측정한 결과, 12 nm-ZnO NP(실시예 1) 양극을 적용한 셀은 C-rate이 50배 증가한 후(10 C)에도 약 60 %의 용량 유지율을 나타냈으며, 6 nm-ZnO NP(실시예 2), 18 nm-ZnO NP(실시예 3) 및 무처리 CNT(비교예 2) 양극을 적용한 셀의 용량 유지율은 각각 52.2 %, 50.4 % 및 41.6 %으로 나타나는 것과 비교하여, 12 nm-ZnO NP(실시예 1) 양극을 적용한 셀에서 가장 높은 용량 유지율을 나타내는 것을 확인할 수 있다. 또한, 10 C에서 초기 용량 753 mAh g-1로 300 사이클 동안 85 %의 용량 유지율 가지며 안정성을 나타내는 것을 확인할 수 있다.
도 10(d) 내지 도 10(f)를 참조하면, 산화아연(ZnO) 나노입자층이 형성된 탄소나노튜브 전극을 양극(cathode)으로 사용한 리튬-황 전지에 대하여 2 C에서 사이클 성능을 확인한 결과, 6 nm-ZnO NP(실시예 2), 12 nm-ZnO NP(실시예 1) 및 18 nm-ZnO NP(실시예 3) 셀의 사이클당 용량 감소율은 각각 0.0902 %, 0.0594 % 및 0.0756 %으로 나타났으며, 따라서 12 nm-ZnO NP(실시예 1) 셀이 가장 높은 사이클 안정성을 나타냄을 확인할 수 있다. 또한, 12 nm-ZnO NP(실시예 1) 셀은 500 사이클 작동 후에도 0.0381 %의 낮은 용량 감소율을 유지하였으며, 10 C의 높은 율속 조건에도 300회까지 안정적인 사이클 구동을 나타냄을 확인할 수 있다.
도 10(g) 내지 도 10(j)를 참조하면, 리튬-황 전지의 에너지 밀도를 높이기 위해 황 로딩양을 높여 전지 성능을 측정하였다. 일반적으로 사용하는 수준의 황(S) 로딩양(5 mg cm-2)보다 높은 황(S) 로딩량(10 mg cm-2, 11 mg cm-2 및 12 mg cm-2)에 대한 전지 용량을 평가한 결과, 0.1 C에서 각 로딩 조건에 따라 초기 용량은 각각 10.7 mAh cm-2, 9.8 mAh cm-2 및 9.1 mAh cm-2으로 나타나는 것을 확인할 수 있다. 단위면적당 황의 로딩(Areal sulfur loading)이 7 mg cm-2, E/S 비율(Electrolyte-to-sulfur ratio)이 4.5 μl mg-1, N/P 비율이 1.76 조건인 경우, 리튬-황 전지(full-cell)의 단위면적 당 용량은 7.51 mAh cm-2에 도달하며, 50 사이클 후 6.82 mAh cm-2를 유지하고 90.8 %의 유지율을 나타내는 것을 확인할 수 있다. 이러한 결과는 12 nm-ZnO NP 양극의 초고밀도 산화아연 전기촉매 나노입자층 코팅이 높은 점도의 전해질에서도 황(S)-전환을 촉진하도록 작동되는 것을 알 수 있다.
비교예 3: 용액 기반 합성법을 사용하여 합성한 산화아연(ZnO) 나노입자를 코팅(Solution process coating of ZnO)한 탄소나노튜브 전극 제조
탄소열 환원법을 사용하지 않고, 질산아연 6수화물(Zinc nitrate hexahydrate, Zn(NO3)2·6H2O)을 전구체로 사용하고 100 ℃ 의 온도에서 2시간 수열합성(Hydrothermal synthesis)하여 산화아연 나노입자를 제조하였다. 합성된 산화아연 나노입자가 포함된 용액에 탄소나노튜브(CNT)를 침지하고 500 ℃의 온도에서 5시간 열처리(annealing)하였다. 이로써, 용액 기반 방법으로 합성된 산화아연 나노입자를 코팅한 탄소나노튜브 전극을 제조하였다.
도 11은 본 발명의 제조예 1에 따른 탄소열 환원반응을 통해 초고밀도 산화아연(ZnO) 나노입자층이 형성된 탄소나노튜브 전극의 (a) 주사전자현미경 사진(스케일 바: 100 nm) 및 (c) TGA 결과이고, 비교예 3에 따른 용액 기반의 나노입자 합성 방법을 통한 산화아연(ZnO) 나노입자를 코팅한 탄소나노튜브 전극에 대한 (b) 주사전자현미경 사진(스케일 바: 100 nm) 및 (d) TGA 결과이다.
도 11을 참조하면, 실시예 1의 초고밀도 산화아연(ZnO) 나노입자층이 형성된 탄소나노튜브 전극 및 비교예 3의 용액 기반의 나노입자 합성 방법을 통한 산화아연(ZnO) 나노입자를 코팅한 탄소나노튜브 전극의 미세구조 및 막 밀도를 비교할 수 있다. 그 결과, 탄소열 환원반응에 의한 방법(실시예 1)이 용액 기반 방법으로 먼저 합성되고 코팅처리된 방법(비교예 3)에 비해 훨씬 더 산화아연(ZnO) 입자의 크기가 작고 밀도가 높은 나노입자층을 가지고 있음을 확인할 수 있다. 실시예 1의 탄소열 환원반응에 의한 초고밀도 산화아연(ZnO) 나노입자층의 입자 크기는 약 10 내지 20 nm로 나타났으며, 이는 용액 기반 합성법을 사용하여 합성된 산화아연(ZnO) 입자 크기와 비교하여 약 4 내지 10배 작은 크기인 것을 알 수 있다.
*도 12는 본 발명의 제조예 1에 따른 탄소열 환원반응을 통해 초고밀도 산화아연(ZnO) 나노입자층이 형성된 탄소나노튜브 전극 및 및 비교예 3에 따른 용액 기반의 나노입자 합성 방법을 통한 산화아연(ZnO) 나노입자를 코팅한 탄소나노튜브 전극에 대한 흡광도(Absorbance) 스펙트럼이다.
도 12를 참조하면, 실시예 1의 초고밀도 산화아연(ZnO) 나노입자층이 형성된 탄소나노튜브 전극 및 비교예 3의 용액 기반의 나노입자 합성 방법을 통한 산화아연(ZnO) 나노입자를 코팅한 탄소나노튜브 전극의 다황화리튬(LiPS)의 흡착 용량과 LiPS-Li2S 정전위 전환(potentiostatic conversion)을 비교할 수 있다. 그 결과, 탄소열 환원반응에 의한 전극(실시예 1)이 용액 기반 방법으로 먼저 합성되고 코팅 처리된 전극(비교예 3)과 비교하여 리튬 폴리설파이드(LiPS) 흡착 용량의 약 2배를 나타내며, 나노입자 코팅층을 구성하는 물질 및 조성은 유사하지만, 탄소열 환원반응에 의한 전극(실시예 1)은 훨씬 더 작은 입자 크기를 가지므로 더 높은 리튬 폴리설파이드(LiPS) 흡착 용량을 갖는 것을 알 수 있다.
도 13은 본 발명의 제조예 1에 따른 탄소열 환원반응을 통해 초고밀도 산화아연(ZnO) 나노입자층이 형성된 탄소나노튜브 전극에 대한 (a) 정전위 전류-시간(i-t) 곡선, (b) 정규화된 전류-시간(i-t) 곡선(실선)과 2D 및 3D 전기증착 모델을 기반으로 한 프로파일(점선), (c) 방전 후 ex-situ 주사전자현미경(SEM) 사진(스케일바: 100 nm)이고, 비교예 3에 따른 용액 기반의 나노입자 합성 방법을 통한 산화아연(ZnO) 나노입자를 코팅한 탄소나노튜브 전극에 대한 (a) 정전위 전류-시간(i-t) 곡선, (b) 정규화된 전류-시간(i-t) 곡선(실선)과 2D 및 3D 전기증착 모델을 기반으로 한 프로파일(점선), (c) 방전 후 ex-situ 주사전자현미경(SEM) 사진(스케일바: 100 nm)이다.
도 13을 참조하면, 비교예 3(solution coating) 전극은 낮은 피크 전류와 빠른 전류 감소를 보여 낮은 330 mAh g-1의 용량을 나타내는 반면, 제조예 1(Dry coating) 전극은 느린 전류 감소와 가장 높은 피크 전류를 보여 517 mAh g-1에 해당하는 가장 높은 증착 용량을 나타내는 것을 확인할 수 있다. 또한, 제조예 1(Dry coating) 전극에서는 3D 황화물 성장 프로파일이 관찰되며, 기판의 표면에서 Li2S 나노입자가 전극 표면에 3D 형태를 나타내는 것을 확인할 수 있다. 따라서, 제조예 1(Dry coating) 전극은 3D 형태의 Li2S 성장을 유도하므로 매우 높은 방전 용량과 빠른 전환 속도를 제공할 수 있다.
이상 첨부된 도면을 참조하여 본 발명의 실시 예들을 설명하였지만, 본 발명이 속하는 기술 분야에서 통상의 지식을 가진 자는 본 발명이 그 기술적 사상이나 필수적인 특징을 변경하지 않고서 다른 구체적인 형태로 실시될 수 있다는 것을 이해할 수 있을 것이다. 그러므로 이상에서 기술한 실시 예들은 모든 면에서 예시적인 것이며 한정적이 아닌 것으로 이해해야만 한다.

Claims (13)

  1. 챔버 내부에 탄소 기재를 위치시키고 2종 이상의 전구체를 주입하여 상기 탄소 기재의 표면에 금속산화물 쉘(shell)을 형성하는 단계(S01); 및
    상기 금속산화물 쉘(shell)이 형성된 탄소 기재에 대하여 탄소열 환원 반응을 수행하여 상기 탄소 기재의 표면에 금속산화물 나노입자층을 형성하는 단계(S02);를 포함하고,
    상기 금속산화물 나노입자층은 상기 금속산화물 쉘(shell)의 적어도 일 부분이 환원적 승화(reductive sublimation)를 통해 건식 에칭(dry etching)되어 형성되는 것을 특징으로 하는, 리튬-황 전지용 전극의 제조방법.
  2. 제1항에 있어서,
    상기 탄소열 환원 반응을 통한 상기 금속산화물 쉘(shell)의 건식 에칭(dry etching)은 하기 반응식 1로 표시되는 반응으로 수행되는 것인, 리튬-황 전지용 전극의 제조방법:

    yC + MxOy → xM(g) + yCO(g)
    상기 반응식 1에서, M은 Zn, Fe, Ni, Cu, W, Ti, Mn, Al, Ti, Co 및 이들의 조합 중 선택되는 어느 하나를 포함하고, x 및 y는 독립적인 임의의 정수이다.
  3. 제1항에 있어서,
    상기 탄소열 환원 반응 시간이 증가할수록 상기 금속산화물 나노입자층의 두께는 감소하고, 상기 금속산화물 나노입자층의 막 밀도는 감소하는, 리튬-황 전지용 전극의 제조방법.
  4. 제1항에 있어서,
    상기 탄소열 환원 반응을 통하여 형성된 금속산화물 나노입자층은 상기 탄소 기재와 화학적으로 고정화되는 것인, 리튬-황 전지용 전극의 제조방법.
  5. 제1항에 있어서,
    상기 리튬-황 전지용 전극의 금속산화물 함량은 전체 중량에 대비하여 5 내지 25 wt%인, 리튬-황 전지용 전극의 제조방법.
  6. 제1항에 있어서,
    상기 리튬-황 전지용 전극의 황 로딩량은 5 내지 20 mg cm-2 인, 리튬-황 전지용 전극의 제조방법.
  7. 제1항에 있어서,
    상기 탄소열 환원 반응은 제1 온도 범위에서 제1 열처리 및 제2 온도 범위에서 제2 열처리를 수행하는 것이고,
    상기 제1 온도 범위보다 상기 제2 온도 범위가 더 높으며,
    상기 제2 온도 범위는 300 ℃ 이상인, 리튬-황 전지용 전극의 제조방법.
  8. 탄소 기재; 및
    상기 탄소 기재의 표면에 형성된 금속화합물 나노입자층;을 포함하고,
    상기 금속화합물 나노입자층은 상기 탄소 기재의 표면에 화학적으로 고정화되는 것을 특징으로 하는, 리튬-황 전지용 전극.
  9. 제8항에 있어서,
    상기 리튬-황 전지용 전극은 전지의 충방전 과정에서 3차원(3D) 입자 형태의 리튬설파이드 성장을 유도하는, 리튬-황 전지용 전극.
  10. 제8항에 있어서,
    상기 금속화합물 나노입자층은 상기 탄소 기재의 표면에 원자층 증착 방법으로 형성된 금속산화물 쉘(shell)의 적어도 일 부분이 환원적 승화(reductive sublimation)를 통해 건식 에칭(dry etching)되어 형성된 것인, 리튬-황 전지용 전극.
  11. 제8항에 있어서,
    상기 리튬-황 전지용 전극의 금속산화물 함량은 전체 중량에 대비하여 5 내지 25 wt%인, 리튬-황 전지용 전극.
  12. 제8항에 있어서,
    상기 리튬-황 전지용 전극의 황 로딩량은 5 내지 20 mg cm-2 인, 리튬-황 전지용 전극.
  13. 탄소 기재; 및 상기 탄소 기재의 표면에 형성된 금속화합물 나노입자층;을 포함하고, 상기 금속화합물 나노입자층은 상기 탄소 기재의 표면에 화학적으로 고정화되는 것을 특징으로 하는, 리튬-황 전지용 전극을 포함하는 양극;
    상기 양극과 대향하여 배치되고, 리튬 금속 또는 리튬 합금을 포함하는 음극;
    상기 양극과 상기 음극의 사이에 배치되며 폴리설파이드 이동을 억제하되 리튬 이온의 전달을 위한 분리막; 및
    상기 양극과 상기 음극 사이에 개재된 전해질;을 포함하는, 리튬-황 전지.
