Definitions
- the salt lake brine is concentrated in a concentration pond called a solar pond, and the main components sodium and potassium are precipitated and removed as salts such as sodium chloride and potassium chloride, resulting in the highly soluble lithium chloride being concentrated in an aqueous solution.
- impurities are removed in a purification process as necessary, and in the next conversion process, sodium carbonate is added to convert the lithium chloride into lithium carbonate, which has low solubility.
- lithium carbonate precipitates as a solid due to its low solubility. It is possible to recover lithium carbonate using this method.
- salt lake brine which contains a lot of lithium
- impurities such as sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, etc.
- the solvent extraction method is used in the concentration process, there is a problem that the selectivity of the extractant for lithium is low. In other words, it is necessary to first remove the impurities from the liquid containing a lot of impurities using a large amount of chemicals, which results in a problem of high overall costs.
- the ion exchange method also has a problem in that the selectivity of the ion exchange resin for lithium is low, and like the solvent extraction method, there is a problem in that the cost of the concentration step is high.
- the chromatographic separation method is a method for separating and recovering lithium by utilizing the difference in elution rate between lithium and impurities other than lithium in a liquid (Patent Document 1). This method also has problems in that the amount of chemicals used in the concentration step is large and the number of steps required is large, resulting in high equipment costs.
- a neutralization step adding an alkali to the second lithium-containing solution after the oxidation step to mainly precipitate and remove as hydroxide magnesium in the second lithium-containing solution and manganese remaining after the oxidation step, thereby obtaining a neutralized solution in which magnesium and manganese have been reduced; and (3C) an ion exchange step: contacting the neutralized solution obtained in the neutralization step with an ion exchange resin to mainly remove calcium and aluminum, and to remove magnesium and manganese remaining after the neutralization step, thereby obtaining the third lithium-containing solution.
- a fourth aspect of the present invention is a method for producing lithium carbonate according to any one of the first to third aspects of the present invention, characterized in that the lithium selective adsorbent in the lithium adsorption step is a manganese oxide obtained by contacting lithium manganate with an acid and desorbing lithium from the lithium manganate.
- a fifth aspect of the present invention is a method for producing lithium carbonate according to any one of the first to fourth aspects of the present invention, characterized in that a hydrogen ion concentration of an acid used in the lithium elution step is 0.3 mol/L or more and 2.0 mol/L or less.
- a sixth aspect of the present invention is a method for producing lithium carbonate according to any one of the first to fifth aspects of the present invention, characterized in that a pH of the neutralized solution in the neutralization step of the impurity removing step is 8.5 or more and 12 or less.
- a seventh aspect of the present invention is a method for producing lithium carbonate according to any one of the first to sixth aspects of the present invention, characterized in that the ion exchange resin used in the ion exchange step of the impurity removal step is an iminodiacetic acid type chelating resin.
- the first invention by carrying out four basic steps and three steps from the oxidation step to the ion exchange step in the impurity removal step, impurities such as manganese, magnesium, calcium, and sodium can be removed with high accuracy. Therefore, high purity lithium carbonate can be obtained at low cost without using a large amount of chemicals.
- the second invention by performing the three steps in the conversion step, calcium carbonate and sodium contained in the third lithium-containing liquid are removed at a high level, so that lithium carbonate with high purity can be obtained.
- the temperature in the decarbonation step is 50° C. or higher and 100° C. or lower, whereby the decarbonation reaction proceeds sufficiently and highly purified lithium carbonate can be obtained.

- FIG. 1 is a basic process diagram of a method for producing lithium carbonate according to one embodiment of the present invention.
- FIG. 1 is a flow diagram of an impurity removing step in a method for producing lithium carbonate according to one embodiment of the present invention.
- FIG. 1 is a flow diagram of a conversion step in a method for producing lithium carbonate according to one embodiment of the present invention.
- the method for producing lithium carbonate according to the present invention comprises the following basic steps (1) to (4), which are carried out in that order.
- Lithium adsorption step a step of contacting a first lithium-containing solution having a low lithium concentration as a raw material with a lithium selective adsorbent to adsorb lithium onto the lithium selective adsorbent.
- Lithium elution step a step of eluting lithium from the lithium selective adsorbent to which lithium has been adsorbed, to obtain a second lithium-containing solution.
- Impurity removing step a step of removing a portion of the metal ions from the second lithium-containing solution to obtain a third lithium-containing solution.
- Conversion step a step of converting the lithium salt contained in the third lithium-containing solution into lithium carbonate to obtain lithium carbonate crystals.
- the impurity removal step (3) is comprised of the following three steps (3A) to (3C), which are carried out in that order.
- the impurity removal step (3) involves three steps, namely, an oxidation step (3A), a neutralization step (3B), and an ion exchange step (3C), which ensures that metals other than lithium are removed.
- an oxidizing agent is used in the oxidation step (3A)
- an alkali is used in the neutralization step (3B) to remove impurities, after which an ion exchange resin is used to remove the remaining impurities.
- the lithium adsorption step (1) which selectively adsorbs lithium, so that high-purity lithium carbonate can be obtained at low cost without using large amounts of chemicals in the impurity removal step (3).
- the conversion step (4) removes a high level of sodium and potassium from the third lithium-containing liquid, thereby increasing the purity of the resulting lithium carbonate.
- the lithium adsorption step (1) shown in FIG. 1 is a step of contacting a lithium selective adsorbent with a first lithium-containing solution having a relatively low lithium concentration, such as a raw material salt lake brine, to selectively adsorb lithium from the first lithium-containing solution onto the lithium selective adsorbent.
- a first lithium-containing solution having a relatively low lithium concentration such as a raw material salt lake brine
- the reaction formula in the lithium adsorption step (1) is shown in Equation 1.
- the reaction formula shows the case where H1.6Mn1.6O4 is used as the lithium selective adsorbent , but the reaction formula is not particularly limited to this.
- the lithium selective adsorbent obtained from lithium manganate having a spinel structure is preferably a manganese oxide obtained by contacting lithium manganate with an acid and removing lithium from the lithium manganate.
- the method of contacting the lithium selective adsorbent with the first lithium-containing solution is not particularly limited, so long as contact can be achieved.
- a column method, a batch mixing method, or the like can be arbitrarily adopted.
- the resistance to liquid passage is high, and continuous liquid passage is often difficult.
- pellets made by kneading the lithium selective adsorbent including the case where it is a precursor before it becomes the lithium selective adsorbent
- a binder such as an alumina binder
- the pH of the first lithium-containing solution is preferably 3 or more and 10 or less. Since the reaction in the lithium adsorption step (1) is a reaction to adsorb lithium and generate an acid, if the pH of the aqueous solution is low, the reaction rate may be slow or the reaction itself may not occur. For this reason, it is desirable to increase the pH of the first lithium-containing solution before contacting the first lithium-containing solution with the lithium selective adsorbent. However, if the first lithium-containing solution contains magnesium, magnesium hydroxide will precipitate if the pH becomes too high, and this magnesium hydroxide will cover the surface of the lithium selective adsorbent, physically inhibiting the lithium adsorption reaction.
- the pH of the first lithium-containing solution is preferably 10 or less. Furthermore, if the pH is less than 3 after passing through the column, the lower part of the column may not be able to efficiently adsorb lithium. For the above reasons, in order to effectively advance the lithium adsorption reaction, it is preferable that the pH of the first lithium-containing solution be 3 or more and 10 or less.
- a circulation method is used as a method for contacting the lithium selective adsorbent with the first lithium-containing solution
- a neutralizing agent to the effluent after passing through the column to adjust the pH to the above range, and then return it to the column.
- the passing speed may be changed according to the required processing amount. If a precipitate occurs after neutralization, a filtration device such as a filter press or a check filter may be used appropriately to smoothly pass the liquid through the column.
- the lithium elution step (2) it is preferable to wash the lithium selective adsorbent after lithium adsorption as necessary.
- the washing may be performed by passing relatively high purity distilled water through the column after passing the first lithium-containing solution through, and extruding and washing the first lithium-containing solution remaining inside.
- the washing may be performed by pouring water on the lithium selective adsorbent after lithium adsorption after solid-liquid separation, and the first lithium-containing solution adhering thereto can be removed.
- ⁇ Lithium elution step (2)> the lithium selective adsorbent having lithium adsorbed thereon is contacted with a mineral acid such as hydrochloric acid to obtain a second lithium-containing solution.
- the lithium selective adsorbent after lithium adsorption is in the form of, for example, lithium manganate, and the lithium is eluted by contacting the lithium selective adsorbent after lithium adsorption with a mineral acid such as hydrochloric acid.
- the contact method is generally a column method, but may also be a batch mixing method, and any contact method may be used.
- the reaction formula during lithium elution is shown in Equation 2.
- Li 1.6 Mn 1.6 O 4 is shown as the lithium manganate, but it is not particularly limited thereto.
- a lithium selective adsorbent obtained from lithium manganate having a spinel structure The concentration of the mineral acid is sufficient to elute lithium, but if the concentration is too high, the lithium manganate used in the lithium selective adsorbent will dissolve and be worn out. Also, if the concentration is too low, lithium will not be eluted.
- the mineral acid hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid, or nitric acid can be used. In any case where any of these acids is used, the acid concentration is preferably 0.3 mol/L or more and 2.0 mol/L or less. In this case, lithium is efficiently eluted and the lithium selective adsorbent is not easily worn out.
- the liquid passing speed can be changed according to the required processing amount.
- the eluate obtained in the lithium elution step (2) i.e., the second lithium-containing solution
- the second lithium-containing solution contains aluminum.
- polyvalent metals other than sodium and potassium cause problems such as shortening the membrane life in the subsequent conversion step (4), so they are removed in the impurity removal step (3).
- the lithium selective adsorbent after lithium adsorption returns to the lithium selective adsorbent before lithium adsorption by the elution operation, and is in a state where it can adsorb lithium again. Therefore, as shown by the arrow a in Figure 1, it can be reused in the lithium adsorption step (1).
- the lithium selective adsorbent is preferably washed with water.
- the second lithium-containing solution can be used in place of the mineral acid used in the lithium elution step (2) by adding an acid to the second lithium-containing solution and adjusting the hydrogen ion concentration of the acid to a range of 0.3 mol/L or more and 2.0 mol/L or less.
- the lithium concentration in the second lithium-containing solution can be increased and the amount of the second lithium-containing solution used in the impurity removal step (3) located in the subsequent stage can be reduced. This makes it possible to reduce the equipment capacity in the steps following the impurity removal step (3), and to suppress equipment costs and running costs for chemicals, etc.
- ⁇ Impurity removal step (3) In the impurity removing step (3) shown in Fig. 1, a part of the metal ions is removed from the second lithium-containing solution to obtain a third lithium-containing solution.
- Fig. 2 shows the details of the impurity removing step (3).
- the impurity removal step (3) comprises an oxidation step (3A), a neutralization step (3B), and an ion exchange step (3C), which are carried out in this order. As for 3), it is sufficient if a part of the metal ions can be removed, and the process is not limited to the process shown here.
- the oxidation step (3A) shown in FIG. 2 is a step of adding an oxidizing agent to the second lithium-containing solution obtained in the lithium elution step (2) (see FIG. 1) to oxidize manganese in the second lithium-containing solution and convert it into insoluble manganese dioxide, thereby precipitating and removing manganese dissolved in the solution.
- Manganese can also be removed in the neutralization step (3B) described below, but since manganese is removed in the oxidation step (3A) before the neutralization step (3B), the burden of removing manganese in the neutralization step (3B) can be reduced. Also, the manganese removed by precipitation in the oxidation step (3A) can be reused.
- the type of oxidizing agent used in the oxidation step (3A) may be air, oxygen, sodium hypochlorite, etc.
- the redox potential of the second lithium-containing solution may be set to a pH and potential that is in the manganese dioxide region on a potential-pH diagram.
- the neutralization step (3B) shown in FIG. 2 is a step of adding an alkali to the post-oxidation liquid obtained in the previous oxidation step (3A) to obtain a post-neutralization liquid and a neutralized precipitate containing impurities.
- the pH is increased by the added alkali, and mainly magnesium becomes hydroxide and precipitates as neutralized precipitate.
- manganese can also be precipitated and removed as hydroxide.
- the pH of the neutralized liquid after the neutralization step (3B) is 8.5 or more and 12 or less. In this case, magnesium and manganese can be precipitated and removed efficiently. If the pH of the neutralized solution exceeds 12, the cost of the neutralizing agent increases, which is not preferable.
- the ion exchange step (3C) shown in FIG. 2 is a step of obtaining a third lithium-containing solution from which some of the impurities have been removed by contacting the neutralized solution obtained in the previous neutralization step (3B) with an ion exchange resin.
- the ion exchange step (3C) it is possible to remove metals that cannot be removed in the steps upstream of the ion exchange step (3C), such as calcium that could not be removed in the neutralization step (3B), aluminum that remains depending on the pH of the neutralization step (3B), and manganese and magnesium that remain in extremely small amounts and cannot be completely removed in the neutralization step (3B).
- the ion exchange resin used is preferably a chelating resin.
- an iminodiacetic acid type resin can be used.
- an iminodiacetic acid type chelating resin By using an iminodiacetic acid type chelating resin, the calcium concentration after treatment can be made low.
- a specific example of an iminodiacetic acid type chelating resin is Amberlite IRC748 (trade name of Organo Corporation).
- the method for contacting the ion exchange resin with the third lithium-containing solution is preferably a column method, although a batch mixing method may also be used.
- the conversion step (4) shown in Fig. 1 is a step of converting the lithium salt contained in the third lithium-containing solution from which some of the impurities have been removed into lithium carbonate to obtain lithium carbonate crystals.
- the conversion step (4) in this embodiment is composed of a carbonation step (4A), a hydrogencarbonation step (4B), and a decarbonation step (4C), which are carried out in that order.
- ⁇ Carbonation step (4A) during the conversion step> a carbonate source such as sodium carbonate is added to the third lithium-containing solution obtained in the previous impurity removal step (3) (see Fig. 1) to precipitate lithium in the third lithium-containing solution as crude lithium carbonate. This is subjected to solid-liquid separation to separate the precipitated crude lithium carbonate from a supernatant liquid, whereby alkali metals such as sodium or potassium and anion components such as boron contained in the supernatant liquid can be removed.
- sodium carbonate is used as the carbonate source, but this is not limiting.
- an alkali metal carbonate such as potassium carbonate.
- the neutralized liquid (see FIG. 2) obtained in the neutralization step (3B) is kept at 80°C to carry out the carbonation step (4A), but the temperature is not limited to this. It can also be carried out at room temperature. If the temperature of the neutralized liquid increases, the solubility of the lithium carbonate to be precipitated decreases, so it is preferable to increase the liquid temperature within a range that does not cause boiling. For example, it is preferable to carry out the process within a range of 70°C to 90°C.
- the amount of the carbonate source appropriately according to the amount of lithium contained in the neutralized solution. In addition, it is preferable to determine the upper limit according to the solubility of the carbonate source.
- the hydrogen carbonate step (4B) shown in FIG. 3 is a step in which water is added to the crude lithium carbonate recovered in the carbonation step (4A) to form a slurry, and carbon dioxide is then blown into the slurry.
- the crude lithium carbonate is converted to lithium hydrogen carbonate, which has high solubility, by reacting with carbon dioxide and water, and a lithium hydrogen carbonate solution is obtained. That is, the lithium hydrogen carbonate dissolves in the liquid to form a lithium hydrogen carbonate solution, and other poorly soluble impurities become solid.
- this impurity is calcium carbonate, which is present in trace amounts in the crude lithium carbonate. By performing solid-liquid separation in this manner, impurities such as calcium carbonate can be removed.
- the temperature is preferably set to 20°C or higher and 40°C or lower.
- the amount of carbon dioxide to be blown in is preferably just before unreacted and insoluble carbon dioxide begins to bubble out.
- the decarbonation step (4C) shown in FIG. 3 is a step in which lithium bicarbonate solution is heated to convert lithium bicarbonate into purified lithium carbonate with low solubility, and then the solution is reprecipitated to obtain purified lithium carbonate.
- the lithium bicarbonate solution obtained in the preceding hydrogen carbonate step (4B) contains a large amount of sodium.
- the lithium carbonate in the crude lithium carbonate is dissolved in the hydrogen carbonate step (4B) as lithium bicarbonate with high solubility, and then converted again to lithium carbonate in the form of purified lithium carbonate in the decarbonation step (4C), thereby precipitating the purified lithium carbonate.
- sodium is almost completely removed, and the purity of the purified lithium carbonate can be increased.
- the precipitated purified lithium carbonate and the supernatant liquid are separated into solid and liquid, and the solid purified lithium carbonate is obtained.
- the temperature is not particularly limited, but it is preferably performed at 50° C. or higher and 100° C. or lower, and more preferably at 60° C. or higher and 90° C. or lower.
- the heating method is not particularly limited, and it is preferable to adopt a method according to the scale of the reaction vessel. For example, heating using a fluororesin-coated heater (product name: Teflon (registered trademark) heater) or steam heating can be adopted.
- a filter press in the solid-liquid separation in the decarbonation step according to this embodiment, it is preferable to use a filter press.
- the lithium selective adsorbent used in the lithium adsorption step (1) with lithium adsorbed thereon was washed with water. Then, a 0.5 mol/L aqueous hydrochloric acid solution was passed through the adsorbent to elute lithium and obtain a second lithium-containing solution. After washing with water, the lithium selective adsorbent was further eluted. In this repetition, the eluent obtained before the repetition, that is, the second lithium-containing solution obtained before the repetition was supplemented with hydrochloric acid to adjust the free acid concentration to 0.5 mol/L, was used.
- the composition of the second lithium-containing solution obtained after repeating this 10 times is shown in Table 2.
- the lithium concentration was increased from 0.710 g/L shown in Table 1 to 6.500 g/L shown in Table 2, so it was found that lithium could be selectively recovered by the lithium selective adsorbent used in this example.
- a sodium hydroxide aqueous solution with a molar concentration of 8 mol/L was added as a neutralizing agent, and sodium hypochlorite with an effective concentration of 12% was added as an oxidizing agent, so that the pH of the second lithium-containing solution was 5 and the redox potential was 730 mV at a silver-silver chloride electrode, thereby obtaining an oxidation-reduction solution.
- This step (3A) was all carried out at room temperature (20°C).
- the composition of the metals contained in this oxidation-induced solution is shown in Table 3. Since the manganese concentration (unit: g/L) in the oxidation-induced solution was reduced from 0.093 to ⁇ 0.001, it can be seen that the manganese content was reduced.
- the neutralized solution obtained in the neutralization step (3B) was passed through a column packed with an iminodiacetic acid type chelating resin (Amberlite IRC748) (trade name of Organo Corporation) at SV5, and the resin was brought into contact with the liquid to obtain a third lithium-containing solution.
- This step (3C) was carried out at room temperature (20°C).
- the composition of the metals contained in this third lithium-containing solution is shown in Table 5. It can be seen that the concentrations (g/L) of magnesium and calcium were dramatically reduced.
- ⁇ Hydrogencarbonation step (4B) in conversion step (4)> water was added to the crude lithium carbonate obtained in the carbonation step (4A) to obtain a slurry containing crude lithium carbonate. Carbon dioxide was blown into this slurry to obtain a lithium hydrogen carbonate solution. The flow rate was adjusted so that a small amount of unreacted and insoluble carbon dioxide bubbles were generated.
- This step (4B) was carried out at room temperature (20°C). The slurry containing crude lithium carbonate was subjected to solid-liquid separation to remove calcium carbonate, which is an impurity.
- ⁇ Decarboxylation step (4C) in conversion step (4)> the lithium bicarbonate solution obtained in the hydrogen carbonate step (4B) was heated to 80° C. to obtain purified lithium carbonate.
- the impurity concentrations (unit: ppm) in this purified lithium carbonate are shown in Table 7. Compared with Table 6, it can be seen that all impurities were reduced, and sodium in particular was reduced.
- the lithium carbonate purified in this way was a high-purity purified lithium carbonate that can be used as a battery raw material.
- the lithium carbonate obtained by the present invention can be used to manufacture lithium-based secondary batteries.
- a typical application for such lithium-based secondary batteries is for use in vehicles, but they can also be used for PCs and other applications.

Abstract
