Definitions
- the present invention relates to a polyester elastomer composition that has excellent flame retardancy without using halogen-based flame retardants, and also has excellent heat aging resistance and retention stability.
- thermoplastic polyester elastomers such as polyether ester type, polyester ester type, and polycarbonate ester type are widely used as materials with excellent heat resistance and mechanical properties.
- polyester ester type and polycarbonate ester type have particularly excellent heat aging resistance, and there are many practical examples in which they are used in applications that require an extremely high level of heat resistance.
- polyether ester type, polyester ester type, and polycarbonate ester type are classifications based on the type of soft segment in the polyester elastomer.
- thermoplastic polyester elastomers The most popular method for improving the flame retardancy of thermoplastic resins, including thermoplastic polyester elastomers, is the incorporation of halogen-based flame retardants.
- thermoplastic polyester elastomers that use halogen-based flame retardants emit toxic gases when burned, their use has been restricted in recent years from the perspective of environmental protection. Therefore, there is a demand for improving the flame retardancy of thermoplastic polyester elastomers without using halogen-based flame retardants.
- a fire prevention material combining ethylenediamine phosphate with a salt of melamine and/or a cyanuric acid derivative, such as melamine phosphate, has been proposed (see Patent Document 1), and a flame-retardant thermoplastic resin composition incorporating a phosphate such as alkyldiamine phosphate as a flame retardant (see Patent Document 2).
- Intumescent flame retardants have also been proposed (see Patent Document 3), which exert flame retardancy by forming a surface expansion layer (intumescent) during combustion and suppressing the diffusion and heat transfer of decomposition products.
- the present invention was devised in light of the current state of the prior art, and its purpose is to provide a polyester elastomer resin composition that has excellent flame retardancy without using halogen-based flame retardants, and that is capable of achieving both heat aging resistance and residence stability.

- the polyester elastomer resin composition according to (1) wherein the aliphatic and/or alicyclic diol (b) contains 1,4-butanediol.
- the aromatic dicarboxylic acid component (a) contains terephthalic acid or naphthalenedicarboxylic acid.
- the phosphorus-based flame retardant (B) is a metal phosphinate and/or an inorganic phosphate.
- the polyester elastomer resin composition according to (1) wherein the acid value of the polyester elastomer resin composition is 10 eq/ton or less.
- the polyester elastomer resin composition according to (1) further comprising an acid end-blocking agent (C) in an amount of up to 5 parts by mass per 100 parts by mass of the polyester elastomer (A).
- a cable covering material comprising the polyester elastomer resin composition according to any one of (1) to (8).
- the polyester elastomer resin composition of the present invention has excellent flame retardancy without the use of halogen-based flame retardants, and is capable of achieving both excellent heat aging resistance and retention stability.
- the polyester elastomer resin composition of the present invention is a polyester elastomer (A) that is composed of a hard segment made of a specific polyester and a soft segment made of a dimer acid, which is mixed with a specific phosphorus-based flame retardant (B) and, if necessary, an acid end-blocking agent (C).
- A a polyester elastomer that is composed of a hard segment made of a specific polyester and a soft segment made of a dimer acid, which is mixed with a specific phosphorus-based flame retardant (B) and, if necessary, an acid end-blocking agent (C).
- the polyester elastomer (A) is composed of a hard segment and a soft segment.
- the mass ratio of the soft segment in the polyester elastomer (A) is preferably 1 to 60 mass%, more preferably 5 to 50 mass%, and further preferably 10 to 45 mass%.
- the hard segment is composed of a polyester having an aromatic dicarboxylic acid (a) and an aliphatic and/or alicyclic diol (b) as constituent components.
- aromatic dicarboxylic acid (A) a normal aromatic dicarboxylic acid is widely used, and is not particularly limited, but terephthalic acid or naphthalenedicarboxylic acid (2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid is preferable among isomers) is preferable.
- Naphthalenedicarboxylic acid has a structure in which the benzene ring in terephthalic acid is replaced with a naphthalene ring.
- a polyester elastomer having naphthalenedicarboxylic acid as an aromatic dicarboxylic acid component in the hard segment has higher hydrophobicity and gas barrier properties than a polyester elastomer having terephthalic acid as an aromatic dicarboxylic acid component in the hard segment, and as a result, is excellent in terms of heat aging resistance and hydrolysis resistance.
- the rigidity and asymmetry of the naphthalene ring structure induce an increase in the elastic modulus and glass transition temperature, so that in terms of flexibility and low-temperature properties as an elastomer resin composition, a polyester elastomer having terephthalic acid as an aromatic dicarboxylic acid component in the hard segment is superior to a polyester elastomer having naphthalenedicarboxylic acid as an aromatic dicarboxylic acid component in the hard segment.
- the content of terephthalic acid or naphthalenedicarboxylic acid relative to 100 mol% of all dicarboxylic acid components constituting the polyester is preferably 70 mol% or more, more preferably 80 mol% or more.
- dicarboxylic acid components include aromatic dicarboxylic acids such as diphenyldicarboxylic acid, isophthalic acid, and 5-sodium sulfoisophthalic acid, alicyclic dicarboxylic acids such as cyclohexanedicarboxylic acid and tetrahydrophthalic anhydride, and aliphatic dicarboxylic acids such as succinic acid, glutaric acid, adipic acid, azelaic acid, sebacic acid, dodecanedioic acid, dimer acid, and hydrogenated dimer acid. These can be used within a range that does not significantly lower the melting point of the resin.
- the aliphatic or alicyclic diol (b) is generally a common aliphatic or alicyclic diol, and is not particularly limited, but is preferably an alkylene glycol having 2 to 8 carbon atoms. Specific examples include ethylene glycol, 1,3-propylene glycol, 1,4-butanediol, 1,6-hexanediol, and 1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol. Of these, 1,4-butanediol is particularly preferred in terms of imparting heat aging resistance.
- the components constituting the polyester of the hard segments are preferably made of butylene terephthalate units (units consisting of terephthalic acid and 1,4-butanediol) or butylene naphthalate units (units consisting of 2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid and 1,4-butanediol) in terms of physical properties, moldability, and cost performance.
- aromatic polyester suitable as the polyester constituting the hard segment in the polyester elastomer (A) is produced in advance and then copolymerized with the soft segment component, the aromatic polyester can be easily obtained according to a normal polyester production method.
- such a polyester preferably has a number average molecular weight of 10,000 to 40,000.
- the essential feature of the present invention is the use of dimer acid (c) as the soft segment of polyester elastomer (A).
- Dimer acid (c) is a dimerization reaction product produced by a dimerization reaction such as the Diels-Alder reaction using natural fatty acids such as soybean oil fatty acids, tall oil fatty acids, rapeseed oil fatty acids, and unsaturated fatty acids (unsaturated aliphatic carboxylic acids) with approximately 18 to 22 carbon atoms, such as oleic acid, linoleic acid, linolenic acid, and erucic acid, which are refined from these fatty acids.
- natural fatty acids such as soybean oil fatty acids, tall oil fatty acids, rapeseed oil fatty acids, and unsaturated fatty acids (unsaturated aliphatic carboxylic acids) with approximately 18 to 22 carbon atoms, such as oleic acid, linoleic acid, linolenic acid, and erucic acid, which are refined from these fatty acids.
- the dimer acid (c) used in the present invention is not particularly limited, but C44 (44 carbon atoms) dimer acid or C36 (36 carbon atoms) dimer acid is preferred, and C44 dimer acid is particularly preferred. Compared to other dimer acids, C44 dimer acid is superior in terms of heat aging resistance, water resistance, flexibility, and low-temperature properties of the resulting polyester elastomer.
- C44 dimer acid refers to a dimer of an unsaturated aliphatic carboxylic acid (erucic acid) with 22 carbon atoms.
- This dimer acid can be obtained by dimerization reaction of erucic acid, an unsaturated aliphatic carboxylic acid with 22 carbon atoms extracted from non-petroleum raw materials such as soybean oil, rapeseed oil, beef tallow, and tall oil, or by hydrogenating it.
- polyester elastomer resin compositions are generally caused mainly by thermal degradation of the soft segments in the polyester elastomer, so although there is an influence of the additive formulation, the structure of the soft segments has the greatest impact on the heat aging resistance of the resin composition.
- Polyester elastomers are classified into polyether ester type, polyester ester type, and polycarbonate ester type depending on the type of soft segment. Of these, polyether ester types have many low-energy bond sites such as ether bonds in their skeletons, so they are prone to heat degradation and have poor heat aging resistance.
- polyester ester type and polycarbonate ester type have few low energy bonds and are excellent in heat aging resistance, but because they have ester groups and carbonate groups, they undergo ester exchange reactions with the ester groups of the hard segment and the associated randomization during heat retention (particularly in systems containing accelerating components such as phosphorus-based flame retardants), which causes a drop in melting point and poor retention stability.
- the dimer acid used as a component of the soft segment in the present invention is composed only of carbon-carbon bonds (excluding some unsaturated bonds), does not have low energy bonds, and has a structure with relatively excellent heat resistance. In addition, it does not have bonds that can cause ester exchange reactions, such as ester groups and carbonate groups like polyester ester type and polycarbonate ester type. Therefore, in the present invention, even if a phosphorus-based flame retardant is used, it is possible to achieve both heat aging resistance and retention stability.
- the content of dimer acid (c) in polyester elastomer (A) is preferably 1 to 25 mol% relative to 100 mol% of the total dicarboxylic acid components, more preferably 3 to 25 mol%, even more preferably 4 to 24 mol%, and most preferably 5 to 22 mol%. If the content of dimer acid (c) is less than the lower limit, the heat aging resistance and residence stability are poor, and in addition, the amount of soft segments is small, so the elastomeric properties are poor, specifically, flexibility and toughness may be insufficient. On the other hand, if the content of dimer acid (c) exceeds the upper limit, the melting point decreases, and the material may melt at the target heat resistance temperature and not be able to retain its shape. There is also a risk of reduced flame retardancy.
- the reduced viscosity of the polyester elastomer (A) is preferably 0.6 to 2.0 dl/g, and more preferably 0.6 to 1.8 dl/g.
- the polyester elastomer (A) can be produced by known methods. For example, it may be produced by a method of transesterifying a lower alcohol diester of a dicarboxylic acid, an excess of a low molecular weight glycol, and a soft segment component in the presence of a catalyst, and then polycondensing the resulting reaction product, or by esterifying a dicarboxylic acid, an excess of a glycol, and a soft segment component in the presence of a catalyst, and then polycondensing the resulting reaction product, or by preparing a hard segment polyester in advance, adding a soft segment component to this, and randomizing it by transesterification, or by linking the hard segment and soft segment with a chain linking agent.
- phosphorus-based flame retardant (B) Generally, phosphorus-based flame retardants include organic phosphorus compounds and inorganic phosphorus compounds.
- the phosphorus-based flame retardant (B) used in the present invention is roughly classified into organic phosphorus compounds and inorganic phosphorus compounds.
- the organic phosphorus compounds include phosphates, phosphonates, phosphinates, and phosphites, and specifically, trimethyl phosphate, triethyl phosphate, tributyl phosphate, trioctyl phosphate, tributoxyethyl phosphate, octyl diphenyl phosphate, tricresyl phosphate, cresyl diphenyl phosphate, triphenyl phosphate, trixylenyl phosphate, tris.isopropylphenyl phosphate, diethyl-N,N-bis(2-hydroxyethyl)aminomethylphosphonate, and bis(1,3-phenylenediphenyl)phosphate.
- metal phosphinates are preferred, and aluminum phosphinates are particularly preferred.
- Inorganic phosphorus compounds include red phosphorus compounds and inorganic phosphate compounds such as ammonium (poly)phosphate, melamine (poly)phosphate, and piperazine (poly)phosphate.
- organic phosphorus compounds may be restricted, and in such cases, inorganic phosphorus compounds must be used.
- polyphosphate compounds are preferred. Examples of polyphosphate compounds include orthophosphate, which is a monomer, and condensed phosphates in which orthophosphate has become a polymer through a dehydration reaction. Condensed phosphates include pyrophosphate, metaphosphate, and polyphosphate.
- a polyphosphate compound refers to one or more compounds selected from orthophosphate compounds, pyrophosphate compounds, metaphosphate compounds, and polyphosphate compounds. Any of the polyphosphate compounds may be used, but from the viewpoint of achieving high flame retardancy, a lower molecular weight compound is preferred, and from the viewpoint of suppressing the bleeding out of phosphorus-based flame retardants and dissolution during immersion in water, a higher molecular weight compound is preferred. Therefore, among the polyphosphate compounds, pyrophosphate compounds are preferred.
- the (poly)phosphate compound may be a single (poly)phosphate compound or a composite flame retardant containing two or more (poly)phosphate compounds.
- the properties (flame retardancy and thermal stability) of the (poly)phosphate compound are derived from the chemical structure of its counter ion, and each counter ion has its own unique features.
- (poly)ammonium phosphate has excellent flame retardancy but poor processing stability
- (poly)melamine phosphate has excellent processing stability but poor flame retardancy.
- a composite flame retardant consisting of (poly)melamine phosphate and (poly)piperazine phosphate as the phosphorus-based flame retardant (B) is a preferred embodiment because it can provide a composition with a better balance of flame retardancy and processing stability (i.e., mechanical properties).
- a composite flame retardant consisting of melamine pyrophosphate and piperazine pyrophosphate as the phosphorus-based flame retardant (B) is an even more preferred embodiment.
- the phosphorus-based flame retardant (B) has an average particle diameter D50 of 20 ⁇ m or less and a phosphorus concentration of 15 mass% or more.

- the lower limit of the average particle diameter D50 is not particularly limited, but is preferably 0.1 ⁇ m or more.
- the phosphorus concentration is preferably 18 mass% or more, more preferably 20 mass% or more.
- the upper limit of the phosphorus concentration is not particularly limited, but is preferably 30 mass% or less. If a flame retardant with a large average particle diameter D50 is used, the surface smoothness during extrusion molding tends to deteriorate and the heat aging resistance tends to decrease.
- the average particle diameter D50 can be measured and analyzed using a laser diffraction particle size distribution analyzer, and the phosphorus concentration can be measured (calculated) using ICP emission spectrometry.
- the content of the phosphorus-based flame retardant (B) in the polyester elastomer resin composition is 5 to 50 parts by mass, preferably 8 to 45 parts by mass, more preferably 10 to 40 parts by mass, and particularly preferably 15 to 35 parts by mass, per 100 parts by mass of the polyester elastomer (A). If the content of the phosphorus-based flame retardant (B) is less than the above range, the flame retardancy is insufficient, and if the content exceeds the above range, problems such as a decrease in mechanical properties arise.
- the polyester elastomer resin composition of the present invention may contain a non-halogen flame retardant other than the phosphorus-based flame retardant (B) as necessary.
- non-halogen flame retardants other than phosphorus-based flame retardants include nitrogen-based flame retardants, silicon-based flame retardants, metal hydroxides, and metal borates.

- the functional group capable of reacting with the terminal carboxyl group of the polyester elastomer (A) include an epoxy group, a hydroxyl group, a carbodiimide group, and an oxazoline group.
- the functional group of the acid end-capping agent (C) is preferably an epoxy group or a carbodiimide group in view of the change in melt viscosity during melt retention and the reactivity with the terminal carboxyl group of the polyester elastomer. Therefore, the acid end-capping agent (C) is preferably a carbodiimide compound and/or an epoxy compound.

- polycarbodiimides such as poly(naphthylenecarbodiimide), poly(p-phenylenecarbodiimide), poly(m-phenylenecarbodiimide), poly(toluylcarbodiimide), poly(diisopropylcarbodiimide), poly(methyl-diisopropylphenylenecarbodiimide), poly(triethylphenylenecarbodiimide), and poly(triisopropylphenylenecarbodiimide), and particularly preferred are poly(1,4-cyclohexylenecarbodiimide) and poly(triisopropylphenylenecarbodiimide).
- Epoxy compounds include aliphatic epoxy compounds such as ethylene glycol diglycidyl ether, polyethylene glycol diglycidyl ether, propylene glycol diglycidyl ether, polypropylene glycol diglycidyl ether, butanediol diglycidyl ether, neopentyl glycol diglycidyl ether, hexanediol diglycidyl ether, glycerin triglycidyl ether, trimethylolpropane triglycidyl ether, and diglycerin tetraglycidyl ether, as well as dicyclopentadiene dioxide and epoxycyclohexene carboxylate.

- alicyclic epoxy compounds such as ethylene glycol diester, 3,4-epoxycyclohexenylmethyl-3'-4'-epoxycyclohexenecarboxylate, and 1,2:8,9-diepoxylimonene
- bisphenol F diepoxy compounds epoxy compounds obtained by reacting polyphenol compounds with epichlorohydrin and hydrogenated compounds thereof
- the epoxy compound is preferably a diepoxy compound from the standpoint of reaction control and extrusion moldability.
- Monoepoxy compounds do not have the chain extension effect and are poor at imparting extrusion moldability.
- many of them have a low volatilization temperature, and gases during molding can be a problem.
- epoxy compounds with three or more functionalities although they are effective in imparting melt viscosity, it can be difficult to control the reaction and maintain fluidity.
- the epoxy compound is preferably a bisphenol F diepoxy compound.
- bisphenol F epoxy compounds have an excellent balance between epoxy equivalent and low volatility, so they are less likely to cause problems such as decomposition gas and associated poor appearance while maintaining reactivity with the terminal carboxyl groups of polyester elastomers. Furthermore, for those that are liquid under normal temperature and pressure conditions, they have the advantage of easily exhibiting bending fatigue while maintaining fluidity, as they simultaneously exert a plasticizing effect while exerting a chain extension effect, and it is preferable to use these compounds. Examples of such epoxy compounds that can be used include Epicron 830 manufactured by DIC Corporation, and jER4004P, jER4005P, and jER4010P manufactured by Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation.
- the content of the acid end-capping agent (C) in the polyester elastomer resin composition is a maximum of 5 parts by mass, and preferably a maximum of 4 parts by mass, per 100 parts by mass of the polyester elastomer (A).
- the acid end-capping agent (C) is added for the purpose of improving hydrolysis resistance and flex fatigue resistance by chain extension, but if the content is too high, it may result in a decrease in flame retardancy, a decrease in mechanical properties due to the foreign matter effect, or a decrease in flame retardancy due to an increase in decomposition gas derived from the acid end-capping agent.
- the acid end blocking agent (C) either an epoxy compound or a carbodiimide compound may be used. It is also possible to use a combination of an epoxy compound and a carbodiimide compound as the acid end blocking agent (C), in which case the upper limit of each content is the content apportioned according to the content ratio of the epoxy compound and the carbodiimide compound. For example, when an epoxy compound and a carbodiimide compound are used in a mass ratio of 50:50, the upper limit of the epoxy compound content is 2.5 parts by mass, and the upper limit of the carbodiimide compound (C-2) content is 0.75 parts by mass.
- the polyester elastomer resin composition of the present invention may contain, if necessary, a general-purpose antioxidant such as an aromatic amine-based, hindered phenol-based, phosphorus-based or sulfur-based antioxidant.
- polyester elastomer resin composition of the present invention it is preferable to add an ultraviolet absorber and/or a hindered amine compound.
- an ultraviolet absorber and/or a hindered amine compound for example, benzophenone-based, benzotriazole-based, triazole-based, nickel-based, and salicylic acid-based light stabilizers can be used.
- the polyester elastomer resin composition of the present invention may contain resins other than the polyester elastomer, inorganic fillers, stabilizers, and antioxidants to the extent that the characteristics of the present invention are not impaired. Also, color pigments, inorganic and organic fillers, coupling agents, tackiness improvers, stabilizers such as quenchers and metal deactivators, flame retardants, etc. may be added.
- the polyester elastomer resin composition of the present invention preferably contains 80% by mass or more, more preferably 90% by mass or more, and even more preferably 95% by mass or more of the polyester elastomer (A), phosphorus-based flame retardant (B), and acid end-capping agent (C) in total (acid end-capping agent (C) is an optional component).
- the acid value of the polyester elastomer resin composition of the present invention is not particularly limited, but is preferably 10 eq/ton or less. By having an acid value of the polyester elastomer resin composition of 10 eq/ton or less, the resin composition tends to have fewer carboxyl terminals that promote hydrolysis of the polyester, and also has excellent hydrolysis resistance.
- the polyester elastomer resin composition of the present invention has excellent flame retardancy, mechanical properties, and heat aging resistance, and is also capable of retaining the inherent flexibility, moldability, heat resistance, chemical resistance, flex fatigue resistance, abrasion resistance, electrical properties, and other properties of polyester elastomers, making it suitable for a wide range of applications, including various parts of electrical products, hoses, tubes, and cable coating materials. It is particularly useful for use in cable coatings.
- the polyester elastomer resin composition of the present invention can be shaped into various molded products by injection molding, extrusion molding, transfer molding, blow molding, and other methods.
- polyester elastomer (A) The acid value (eq/ton) of polyester elastomer (A) was determined by dissolving 200 mg of a thoroughly dried sample (polyester elastomer) in 10 mL of hot benzyl alcohol, cooling the resulting solution, adding 10 mL of chloroform and phenol red, and titrating with a 1/25 N potassium alcohol solution (a solution of KOH in methanol) by a dissolution titration method. Description
