- N the number of protrusions having a height of 50 nm or more from the reference surface
- surface roughness is measured based on ISO 25178, and the average surface, which is the average height of the irregularities in the Z direction, is taken as the reference surface.
- a height of 50 nm from the reference surface is then used as a threshold for binarization, and an independent area with a height equal to or greater than the threshold is considered to be one protrusion.
- the number (N) of protrusions having a height of 50 nm or more from the reference surface is sometimes simply referred to as the number of protrusions (N).
- the area (S) less than 50 nm high from the reference plane is the area other than the area of the convex parts, and can be calculated by calculating the area of the convex parts from the sum of the projected areas of the regions with heights equal to or greater than the threshold value when binarized using a height of 50 nm from the reference plane, and then subtracting the area of the convex parts from the total area.
- the area (S) less than 50 nm high from the reference plane may also be referred to simply as the projected area (S) other than the convex parts.
- the value (S/N) obtained by dividing the projected area (S) other than the convex parts by the number of convex parts (N) may also be referred to simply as the value (S/N).
- the "arithmetic mean height Sa" is a parameter defined by ISO 25178, which is a parameter obtained by expanding the measured cross-sectional curve that shows the cross-sectional shape of the unevenness into a surface.
- measurements are performed in an area of 5 ⁇ m x 5 ⁇ m, and the arithmetic mean height Sa is calculated with the cutoff value of the high-pass filter ⁇ c set to 2.5 ⁇ m.
- first invention and the second invention may be collectively referred to as the present invention.
- the first invention and the second invention may be implemented individually or in combination.
- the glass member 1 of this embodiment has the above-mentioned configuration of the present invention, and therefore has excellent water repellency even without forming a water repellent coating on the surface. Note that in the present invention, it is not necessary to form a water repellent coating, and a water repellent film may be provided as in the second embodiment described below.
- wenzel's model explains that in the case of a hydrophilic solid, the hydrophilicity is improved by forming irregularities on the solid surface, whereas in the case of a water-repellent solid, the water-repellency is improved by forming irregularities on the solid surface.
- the surface of the glass member is hydrophilic, forming irregularities on the surface will further improve the hydrophilicity.
- the inventors focused on both the roughness curve of a relatively small area on the first main surface 1a (surface) of the glass member 1 and the roughness curve of a relatively large area on the first main surface 1a (surface) of the glass member 1.
- the roughness curve of a relatively small area on the surface of the glass member 1 is represented, for example, as a roughness curve as shown in FIG. 2.
- the roughness curve of a relatively large area on the surface of the glass member 1 is represented, for example, as a roughness curve as shown in FIG. 3.
- the roughness curves in FIGS. 2 and 3 are schematic roughness curves shown for the purpose of explanation, and the portion surrounded by dashed line A in FIG. 3 corresponds to the roughness curve in FIG. 2.
- the inventors have surprisingly found that by adjusting the number (N) of protrusions in a relatively large area (96 ⁇ m ⁇ 72 ⁇ m area) on the surface of the glass member 1 and the arithmetic mean height Sa of a relatively small area (5 ⁇ m ⁇ 5 ⁇ m area) on the surface of the glass member 1 to within a specific range, it is possible to increase the water repellency of the surface of the glass member 1.
- the number (N) of convex portions on the surface of the glass member 1 is preferably 15 or more, more preferably 20 or more, even more preferably 25 or more, even more preferably 30 or more, even more preferably 40 or more, even more preferably 50 or more, particularly preferably 100 or more, and most preferably 150 or more, and is preferably 245 or less, more preferably 240 or less, even more preferably 235 or less, particularly preferably 230 or less, and most preferably 225 or less.
- the number (N) of convex portions on the surface of the glass member 1 is equal to or greater than the lower limit, it becomes even more difficult for liquid to penetrate into the concave portions of the unevenness on the surface of the glass member 1, and the air layer can be more reliably held. This can further increase water repellency. Also, if the number (N) of convex portions on the surface of the glass member 1 is equal to or less than the upper limit, it can more reliably hold an air layer in the concave portions of the unevenness on the surface of the glass member 1. This can further increase water repellency.
- the number of convex portions (N2) having a height of 100 nm or more from the reference surface is preferably 15 or more, more preferably 20 or more, even more preferably 30 or more, and preferably 245 or less, more preferably 235 or less, and even more preferably 225.
- the number of convex portions (N2) is determined in the same manner as the number of convex portions (N) described above, except that the height from the reference surface is 100 nm or more.
- the number of convex portions (N2) on the surface of the glass member 1 is equal to or greater than the lower limit, it becomes even more difficult for liquid to penetrate into the concave portions of the unevenness on the surface of the glass member 1, and the air layer can be more reliably held. This can further increase water repellency. Also, if the number of convex portions (N2) on the surface of the glass member 1 is equal to or less than the upper limit, it becomes even more reliably possible to hold an air layer in the concave portions of the unevenness on the surface of the glass member 1. This can further increase water repellency.
- /N) x 100) which is the absolute value of the difference between the number of convex portions (N) and the number of convex portions (N2) divided by the number of convex portions (N) and expressed as a percentage, is preferably 50% or less, more preferably 25% or less, and even more preferably 10% or less.
- /N) x 100) is not particularly limited, but may be 0.1% or more, 1% or more.
- the rate of increase or decrease ((
- the inventors have surprisingly found that the water repellency of the surface of the glass member 1 can be increased by adjusting the value (S/N) of a relatively large area (96 ⁇ m ⁇ 72 ⁇ m area) on the surface of the glass member 1 and the arithmetic mean height Sa of a relatively small area (5 ⁇ m ⁇ 5 ⁇ m area) on the first main surface 1a of the glass member 1 to a specific range.
- the value (S/N) on the surface of the glass member 1 is preferably 21.0 ⁇ m2 or more, more preferably 22.0 ⁇ m2 or more, even more preferably 23.0 ⁇ m2 or more, even more preferably 24.0 ⁇ m2 or more, even more preferably 25.0 ⁇ m2 or more, even more preferably 30.0 ⁇ m2 or more, even more preferably 40.0 ⁇ m2 or more, even more preferably 50.0 ⁇ m2 or more, even more preferably 70.0 ⁇ m2 or more, particularly preferably 100.0 ⁇ m2 or more, and most preferably 150.0 ⁇ m2 or more, and preferably 400.0 ⁇ m2 or less, more preferably 350.0 ⁇ m2 or less, even more preferably 300.0 ⁇ m2 or less, particularly preferably 250.0 ⁇ m2 or less, and most preferably 230.0 ⁇ m2 or less.
- the arithmetic mean height Sa on the surface of the glass member 1 is preferably 2.0 nm or more, more preferably 3.0 nm or more, even more preferably 4.0 nm or more, particularly preferably 5.0 nm or more, and most preferably 6.0 nm or more, and is preferably 45.0 nm or less, more preferably 40.0 nm or less, even more preferably 35.0 nm or less, particularly preferably 30.0 nm or less, and most preferably 25.0 nm or less.
- the arithmetic mean height Sa on the surface of the glass member 1 is equal to or greater than the lower limit, a larger air layer can be retained in the concaves of the unevenness on the surface of the glass member 1. This can further increase water repellency. Furthermore, if the arithmetic mean height Sa on the surface of the glass member 1 is equal to or less than the upper limit, it can be made even more difficult for liquid to penetrate into the concaves of the unevenness on the surface of the glass member 1, and air layers can be retained more reliably. This can further increase water repellency.
- the arithmetic mean height Sa on the surface of the glass member 1 is equal to or less than the upper limit, it can be made even less likely for light to be scattered by the uneven shape, and transparency on the surface of the glass member 1 can be made even less likely to be impaired.
- the arithmetic mean height SaA is preferably 1.0 nm or more, more preferably 2.0 nm or more, even more preferably 3.0 nm or more, even more preferably 4.0 nm or more, particularly preferably 5.0 nm or more, and most preferably 6.0 nm or more, and is preferably 50.0 nm or less, more preferably 45.0 nm or less, even more preferably 40.0 nm or less, even more preferably 35.0 nm or less, particularly preferably 30.0 nm or less, and most preferably 25.0 nm or less.
- the arithmetic mean height SaA can be measured in the same manner as the "arithmetic mean height Sa" in accordance with ISO 25178. Specifically, the arithmetic mean height SaA can be obtained by measuring the arithmetic mean height of a minute region at a location lower than the reference plane, as shown by the dashed line A in Figure 3.
- the arithmetic mean height SaA on the surface of the glass member 1 is equal to or greater than the lower limit, a larger air layer can be retained in the concaves of the unevenness on the surface of the glass member 1. This can further increase water repellency. Furthermore, if the arithmetic mean height SaA on the surface of the glass member 1 is equal to or less than the upper limit, it can be made even more difficult for liquid to penetrate into the concaves of the unevenness on the surface of the glass member 1, and air layers can be retained more reliably. This can further increase water repellency.
- the arithmetic mean height SaA on the surface of the glass member 1 is equal to or less than the upper limit, it can be made even less likely for light to be scattered by the uneven shape, and transparency on the surface of the glass member 1 can be made even less likely to be impaired.

- the glass member 1 of this embodiment has excellent water repellency, so it can be suitably used as a lens member or cover member for cameras used outdoors, such as vehicle-mounted cameras and surveillance cameras.
- the glass member 1 of this embodiment can also be suitably used as a window panel member for automobiles, railway vehicles, ships, aircraft, etc.
- the irregularities on the first principal surface 1a of the glass member 1 are formed by performing a chemical etching process on the surface of the original glass member, followed by a wet blasting process.
- Chemical etching is a process in which the original glass member is immersed in an etching solution such as hydrofluoric acid to form irregularities. By using chemical etching, the number (N) and value (S/N) of protrusions on the surface of the resulting glass member 1 can be adjusted.
- the etching solution composition can be, for example, a mixed solution containing hydrofluoric acid and ammonium fluoride, a mixed solution containing hydrofluoric acid and potassium bifluoride, or a mixed solution containing hydrofluoric acid and sodium bifluoride.
- the etching solution may also contain other acids such as sulfuric acid, nitric acid, and hydrochloric acid, or chelating agents such as citric acid and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid.

- the processing temperature of the chemical etching process can be, for example, 10°C or higher and 50°C or lower.
- the processing time of the chemical etching process can be, for example, 1 second or higher and 3 hours or lower.
- the number (N) and value (S/N) of the convex portions can be adjusted by adjusting the etching solution composition, processing time, processing temperature, etc. of the chemical etching process.
- the number (N) of the convex portions can be increased by increasing the content of ammonium fluoride, potassium hydrogen fluoride, or sodium hydrogen fluoride in the etching solution, or by increasing the processing temperature in the etching solution.
- the number of convex parts (N) formed by etching when etching is performed to the same depth tends to increase, and the projected area (S) other than the convex parts tends to decrease (the area of the convex parts increases). If the projected area (S) other than the convex parts decreases further (the area of the convex parts increases further), adjacent convex parts tend to stick together, resulting in a decrease in the number of convex parts (N).
- the area of the convex parts formed by etching increases, and the projected area (S) other than the convex parts decreases.
- the number of convex parts (N) and the projected area (S) other than the convex parts are determined by the balance of these processing conditions.
- Wet blasting is a process in which abrasive grains made of solid particles such as alumina are mixed with liquid such as water to form a slurry, which is then sprayed at high speed from a spray nozzle using compressed air onto a workpiece made of the original glass material, forming fine irregularities on the workpiece.
- the abrasive grains sprayed onto the workpiece and the pieces of the workpiece that have been scraped off by the abrasive grains are washed away by the liquid sprayed onto the workpiece, so fewer particles remain on the workpiece.
- the liquid In wet blasting, when the slurry is sprayed onto the workpiece, the liquid carries the abrasive grains to the workpiece, making it easier to use finer abrasive grains than in dry sandblasting, and the impact when the abrasive grains collide with the workpiece is smaller, making it possible to perform precise machining.
- the average particle size of the abrasive grains can be, for example, 0.2 ⁇ m or more and 60 ⁇ m or less.
- the air pressure when spraying the slurry containing the abrasive grains can be, for example, 0.1 MPa or more and 0.5 MPa or less.
- the nozzle scanning speed can be, for example, 0.1 mm/s or more and 100 mm/s or less.
- the average particle size of the abrasive grains can be measured, for example, by an electrical resistance method.
- the arithmetic mean height Sa on the surface of the glass member 1 can be increased by increasing the average particle size of the abrasive grains in the wet blasting process, increasing the ejection pressure of the slurry, or slowing down the scanning speed of the nozzle.
- the original glass member Before the chemical etching process, the original glass member may be subjected to a first wet blasting process to give it irregularities that will serve as starting points for etching, and then a second wet blasting process may be performed after the chemical etching process.

- the functional film 23 is provided on a main surface 22a of the glass member body 22.
- the main surface 21a of the glass member 21 (the main surface of the functional film 23) has the same unevenness as the first main surface 1a of the glass member 1 in the first embodiment.
- the uneven shape can be formed in advance on the main surface 22a of the glass member body 22 so that the uneven shape of the main surface (main surface 21a) of the functional film 23 after formation will be the same as the uneven shape of the main surface 1a of the glass member 1 in the first embodiment.
- the unevenness may be formed after the functional film 23 is formed. In this case, it is preferable to form the functional film 23 thicker than the uneven shape to be formed.
- the functional film 23 may be, for example, a water-repellent film.
- the main surface 21a of the glass member 21 (the main surface of the functional film 23) has irregularities similar to those of the first main surface 1a of the glass member 1 in the first embodiment. Therefore, even if the water-repellent film wears or peels off due to friction such as rubbing, the irregularities provide high water repellency. Therefore, high water repellency can be maintained for a long period of time.
- the water-repellent film may be an organic thin film for improving water repellency.
- the organic thin film may be a compound having a fluorine-modified organic group and a silyl group, or a silane compound containing an alkyl group or a fluoroalkyl group.
- the organic thin film may be formed (film-formed) by bonding a silane compound containing an alkyl group or a fluoroalkyl group to the surface of the glass member body 22.
- the water-repellent film may also contain a silicone resin, and may be an organic thin film containing, among others, methyl silicone resin, methyl phenyl silicone resin, alkyd-modified silicone resin, epoxy-modified silicone resin, acrylic-modified silicone resin, polyester-modified silicone resin, or fluorine-modified silicone resin.
- Functional film 23 may also be an optically functional film.
- an anti-reflection film or a reflective film can be used as the optically functional film.
- a low refractive index film having a lower refractive index than the glass member body 22, or a dielectric multilayer film in which a low refractive index film having a relatively low refractive index and a high refractive index film having a relatively high refractive index are alternately stacked is used.
- the anti-reflection film and the reflective film can be formed by a sputtering method, a CVD method, or the like.
- the thickness of the functional film 23 is not particularly limited as long as it does not impair the effects of the present invention, and can be, for example, 1 nm or more and 5 ⁇ m or less.
- the glass member 21 of this embodiment also has the above-described configuration of the present invention, and therefore has excellent water repellency.

- a chemical etching process was performed on the entire main surface on one side of the prepared aluminosilicate glass (hereinafter simply referred to as glass).
- a wet blasting process was performed on the entire main surface on one side of the glass that had been subjected to the chemical etching process, thereby producing a glass member.
