Definitions
- the invention relates to a can lid, in particular for beverage cans, with a metal lid surface in which an opening is formed which is delimited by a closed edge of the lid surface and which can be closed by a closure piece of the metal lid surface, a sealing frame made of plastic material which is connected to the metal lid surface and encloses the opening, a closure unit made of plastic material which carries the closure piece and is pivotably attached to the metal lid surface via a pivot bearing, wherein the sealing frame and the closure unit can be releasably connected to one another in a fluid-tight manner via at least one sealing rib and an associated receiving groove, wherein respective locking projections which run around the opening are arranged on the at least one sealing rib and on the associated receiving groove and which engage behind one another with respect to a height direction pointing transversely to the plane defined by the opening, and wherein in an initial position of the closure unit the closure piece which closes the opening is flush with the surrounding lid surface or is offset parallel to it by less than the thickness of the metal lid surface.
- Can lids of this type are used on a large scale for the production of beverage cans, food cans and the like. Due to the interaction of the sealing rib and the receiving groove, a corresponding can lid can be closed again after opening. Before the can lid is opened for the first time, the closure piece can be separated from the surrounding lid surface by a micro-gap or a weakening line extending at least in sections along the edge of the lid surface, with a sealing film made of a Plastic material can cover the micro-gap or the line of weakness. After the can lid is opened for the first time, the tightness of the can lid can only be ensured by the sealing rib and the receiving groove.
- the pivot bearing can be formed directly between the closing unit and the metallic lid surface, for example by connecting a flexible plastic strip to the closing unit at one end and to the metallic lid surface at the other end.
- the pivot bearing can also be formed between the closing unit and the sealing frame, whereby due to the fastening of the sealing frame to the metallic lid surface there is also a pivot connection between the closing unit and the metallic lid surface.
- the locking projection of the sealing frame and the locking projection of the closing unit are spaced apart from one another in the height direction by a predetermined height offset when the closing unit is in the starting position.
- the locking projections extend around the opening without interruption or with distributed interruptions so that a stable locking engagement is possible. It is further preferred that the height offset between the locking projections exists at least essentially at every point along the course of the locking projections, because the shape and position of the closure piece are generally undefined after the can lid is opened for the first time.
- the height offset is at least as large and preferably at least substantially as large as the thickness of the metal cover surface. Even if the closure piece partially strikes the surrounding cover surface, this design enables a locking engagement between the sealing frame and the closure unit.
- a special embodiment of the invention provides that the metallic cover surface is laminated with a film on an inner side opposite the sealing frame and the height offset is at least as large and preferably is at least essentially exactly as large as the sum of the thickness of the metallic lid surface and the thickness of the film. This enables a locking engagement between the sealing frame and the closing unit even in the event that the closure piece with its underside film strikes the upper side of the surrounding lid surface.
- the height offset is at least 0.05 mm and at most 2 mm, preferably at least 0.2 mm and at most 1 mm, particularly preferably at least 0.35 mm and at most 0.55 mm. This has proven to be particularly advantageous in practice.
- the locking projections are formed by surface sections that run at least substantially parallel to one another and/or obliquely to the plane defined by the opening.
- the metallic cover surface can be made of aluminum.
- the sealing frame and the closing unit can have respective stop surfaces that rest against each other when the closing unit is in the starting position.
- the movement play for the closing unit in the vertical direction is limited on the one hand by the stop surfaces and on the other hand by the locking projections that engage behind each other.
- the invention also relates to a can lid, in particular for beverage cans, with a metallic lid surface in which an opening is formed which is delimited by a closed edge of the lid surface and which can be closed by a closure piece of the metallic lid surface, a sealing frame made of plastic material which is connected to the metallic lid surface and encloses the opening, a closing unit made of plastic material which carries the closure piece and which is pivotably attached to the metallic Lid surface is attached, wherein the sealing frame and the closing unit can be releasably connected to one another in a fluid-tight manner via at least one sealing rib and an associated receiving groove, wherein respective locking lugs are arranged on the at least one sealing rib and on the associated receiving groove, which engage behind one another with respect to a height direction pointing transversely to the plane defined by the opening.
- the locking projections extend around the opening with distributed interruptions. This results in stiffening webs that increase the stability of the locking connection.
- the interruptions are preferably evenly distributed around the circumference of the opening.
- Fig. 1 is a partial perspective view of a can lid according to the invention.
- Fig. 2 shows the can lid according to Fig. 1 in a sectional view before first opening.
- Fig. 3 is the enlarged section A of Fig. 2.
- Fig. 4 shows the can lid according to Fig. 1 in a sectional view after the first opening in a reclosed state.
- Fig. 5 is the enlarged section B of Fig. 4.
- Fig. 6 is a plan view of a plastic part by which a sealing frame, a closing unit and a tear-open member of a can lid according to the invention are formed.
- FIG. 1 and 2 show a can lid 11 intended in particular for a beverage can, in the metal lid surface 13 of which a resealable opening system 15 is integrated.
- the can lid 11 can be connected to an associated container (not shown) via a flanged edge 17.
- An opening is provided in the metal lid surface 13, which in the delivery state of the can lid 11 shown in Figs. 1 and 2 is closed by a section of the metal lid surface 13 in the form of a closure piece 19.
- the closure piece 19 is separated from the surrounding lid surface 13 by a micro-gap or a weakening line (not shown).
- the metallic lid surface 13 is preferably formed from a sheet metal layer made of aluminum or tinplate.
- a sealing film made of plastic can be applied to the inside of the can lid 11, although this is not shown in the figures.
- the reclosable opening system 15 comprises a sealing frame 21 made of plastic material which encloses the opening and is firmly connected to the surrounding lid surface 13. Furthermore, a closing unit 25 made of plastic material which carries the closure piece 19 is provided, which is connected to the sealing frame 21 via a first pivot bearing 27 and is thus pivotably attached to the surrounding lid surface 13.
- An annular tear-open member 29 (Fig. 2), preferably also made of plastic, is connected to the closure unit 25 or is molded directly onto it and is accordingly attached to the closure piece 19.
- a user By pulling on the tear-open member By means of the tear-open element 29, a user can pivot the closure piece 19 upwards out of the opening plane 33 defined by the opening and thus release the opening, possibly by separating the sealing film.
- the connection between the tear-open element 29 and the closing unit 25 is provided by a second pivot bearing 35 (Fig. 1), which is diametrically opposite the first pivot bearing 27.
- the tear-open element 29 has been omitted in Fig. 1.
- a radially outer sealing rib 41 and a radially inner sealing rib 42 are formed on the sealing frame 21. Furthermore, a radially outer receiving groove 43 and a radially inner receiving groove 44 are formed on the closing unit 25.
- the interlocking sealing ribs 41, 42 and receiving grooves 43, 44 enable a detachable, fluid-tight connection between the sealing frame 21 and the closing unit 25. Accordingly, the can lid 11 is resealable.
- the sealing ribs 41, 42 could also be arranged on the closing unit 25 and the receiving grooves 43, 44 could also be arranged on the sealing frame 21. Depending on the application, more than two pairs of sealing ribs 41, 42 and receiving grooves 43, 44 could also be provided.
- respective locking projections 45, 46 are formed in the form of inclined surfaces, which engage behind one another with respect to a height direction 47 pointing transversely to the opening plane 33.
- the locking projection 45 of the sealing frame 21 and the locking projection 46 of the closing unit 25 run parallel to one another and extend around the entire opening.
- Fig. 3 shows the reclosable opening system 15 and in particular the closing unit 25 in a starting position which is present before the first opening.
- the closure piece 19 is connected to the reversed flush with the cover surface 13 (Fig. 1). This means that the closure piece 19 extends in the opening plane 33.
- the sealing ribs 41, 42 rest on the bottom of the receiving grooves 43, 44 when the closing unit 25 is in the starting position.
- the locking projection 45 of the sealing frame 21 does not rest against the locking projection 46 of the closing unit 25 when the closing unit 25 is in the starting position. Rather, the locking projections 45, 46 are spaced apart from one another in the height direction 47 by a predetermined height offset 49, so that there is a free space 50 between the locking projections 45, 46.
- the height offset 49 is preferably selected to be as large as the thickness of the metallic cover surface 13 plus the thickness of any film. In particular, the height offset 49 can be at least 0.35 mm and at most 0.55 mm.
- Fig. 4 and Fig. 5 show the reclosable opening system 15 in a reclosed state after the initial opening. Due to unavoidable deformations and position changes, it is generally not possible to fit the closure piece 19 exactly back into the opening and thus restore the flush initial state. Rather, the closure closing piece 19 rests in places on the edge of the opening and thus, overall, remains somewhat above the opening plane 33. However, due to the height offset 49 present in the starting position (Fig. 3), there is sufficient room for movement in the height direction 47 for the closing unit 25, so that the incorrect positioning of the closing piece 19 can be compensated. Despite the incorrect positioning, the locking lugs 45, 46 can engage behind one another, so that the sealing frame 21 and the closing unit 25 are reliably locked together even when resealed. Leaks and unintentional opening are therefore avoided with a can lid 11 according to the invention.
- Fig. 6 shows a one-piece plastic part 55 which comprises the sealing frame 21, the closing unit 25 and the tear-open member 29.
- the radially outer sealing rib 41 and the radially outer receiving groove 43 - including the locking projections 45, 46 not visible in Fig. 6 - are interrupted by recesses 57 or stiffening webs 59.
- the radially outer receiving groove 43 also extends around the opening with evenly distributed interruptions in the form of stiffening webs 59.
- the stiffening webs 59 fit into the recesses 57. This is advantageous because it counteracts the escape of material and thus the locking engagement is overall more stable and reliable, but is nevertheless provided completely around the opening. In principle, however, the locking lugs 45, 46 could also extend uninterruptedly around the opening.
- closure piece 19 is flush with the surrounding cover surface 13 in the initial state. Rather, the closure piece 19 can be offset transversely to the opening plane 33 by less than the sheet thickness, for example by a maximum of 80% of the sheet thickness, parallel to the metallic cover surface 13 in order to form a cutting edge for better cutting through the inner film.
