Definitions
- the invention relates to the communication between a driver of a motor vehicle and a person outside.
- the invention relates to ensuring driving safety of the motor vehicle during communication.
- a motor vehicle is controlled by a driver. How much attention the driver has to devote to this activity is largely determined by the driving situation of the motor vehicle. For example, if the motor vehicle is on a narrow mountain road in the dark and snowing, greater attention is usually required than when driving at medium speed in daylight on a dry, well-developed and little-used highway.
- the driver can communicate with a person outside the vehicle, for example in a telephone call or video conference. If the driving situation changes so that the driver has to concentrate more on driving the vehicle, the communication can have a disruptive effect on him. Even if in such a situation he participates less actively in the communication, he can still be exposed to the flow of information from the other person.
- One object underlying the invention is to provide an improved technique for assisting a driver of a motor vehicle who is communicating with a person outside the motor vehicle.
- the invention solves the problem by means of the subject matter of the independent claims. Subclaims reflect preferred embodiments.
- a method for controlling communication between a driver of a motor vehicle and another person outside the motor vehicle comprises steps of determining a driving situation of the motor vehicle; determining a driver's level of attention required to drive the motor vehicle based on the particular driving situation; determining that the communication jeopardizes achieving the required attention; and influencing communication depending on the attention required.
- first factors can, for example, lie outside the motor vehicle and in particular relate to visibility, route routing, traffic volume or navigation.
- Second factors may relate to the motor vehicle itself and its operation or function, for example a required gear change, control of a drive motor, operation of an air conditioning system (HVAC) or the setting or deleting of an external signaling or lighting device.
- Third factors may concern information or streams of information to which the driver is exposed independently of said communication, for example from children on board, a passenger or from an entertainment system output.
- a driver distraction is determined that is independent of the driving situation and the communication.
- the communication can be influenced if the attention required to control the motor vehicle and the communication exceeds a predetermined threshold; whereby the threshold value can be lowered depending on the specific distraction.
- a type or level of intervention in the communication can be selected or predetermined by the driver.
- the intervention may depend on the level of attention required, the driving situation or a type of distraction.
- the driver can make an association between a driving situation and an intervention in communication.
- the intervention in communication can be done gently to avoid the driver being frightened or distracted by the loss of communication effort.
- a signal is provided to the driver, which in particular indicates a recommended reduction in communication.
- the signal may be provided if the required attention exceeds or threatens to exceed the threshold.
- a visual or acoustic signal can be used to prompt the driver to reduce or stop communication.
- the other person may also receive the signal or be exempt from it.
- a message transported as part of the communication is delayed if the driver needs to achieve increased attention.
- the delay can affect one or both directions of communication.
- a conversation or a video data stream can be A pause in the conversation can be interrupted for a longer period or a flow of information from the communication can be buffered and forwarded at a slower rate. If the required level of attention falls below the predetermined threshold, the delayed communication can be made up for, for example, by forwarding the flow of information from the buffer at an increased speed. If the buffer is empty, the communication can be forwarded at its original speed.
- advance notice of an increased need for attention can be provided during a telephone call or video conference.
- a spoken message can be used to indicate an impending driving situation, such as “merging soon”.
- This message can be provided a predetermined time, for example approximately 5 to approximately 20 s, before the expected driving situation. Communication can be interrupted until the driving situation has been managed with increased attention. In yet another embodiment, an indication of the expected start or end of the driving situation can be given, for example in the form of an announcement of the remaining time.
- a message transported as part of the communication can be issued to the driver with reduced intrusiveness.
- an acoustic message or information can be output quieter or an optical one smaller, with reduced contrast or less bright.
- a signal is provided to the other person, which in particular indicates a recommended reduction in communication.
- the signal can optionally also be provided to the driver.
- one or more of them may be affected by the interference with the communication or the signal.
- the signal is preferably designed to convey to the other person that the driver needs to pay increased attention when driving the motor vehicle.
- the signal is further preferably selected so that it can be other person can understand it intuitively.
- the signal can convey a circumstance which, according to common experience, indicates a temporary interruption or reduction in communication.
- the other person can thus get an immediate impression that the driver is currently unable to follow the communication well.
- the other person can slow down the communication, make it less intense or stop it until the situation conveyed to him on board the motor vehicle has been resolved.
- the signal can be provided acoustically.
- the signal can include a voice message that indicates an applicable driving situation that requires increased driver attention, such as a warning of a traffic jam or an impending driving maneuver.
- the signal can also relate to an acoustic signal or a noise that is generally associated with a demanding driving situation, for example a signal sequence from a parking distance warning system, a siren or squealing tires.
- the warning or signal does not necessarily have to indicate a driving situation that corresponds to the current driving situation of the motor vehicle, but can also be issued as a representative of a known driving situation with increased required driver attention.
- the acoustic output can be carried out in such a way that the driver does not hear it or only hears it to a lesser extent.
- the communication includes the provision or transmission of an image to the other person, where the signal can relate to a change in the image.
- the image can be generated on board the vehicle or information can be provided to create the image.
- the image can be provided in particular as part of a video data stream. which can be created on board the motor vehicle or by a central location. For example, when determining a demanding driving situation, a video data stream from a camera aimed at the driver can be replaced by another video data stream, which can be recorded, for example, from the surroundings of the motor vehicle.
- the image can also be displayed blurrier or with a coarser resolution. In this way, the other person can recognize, on the one hand, from the driver's lack of visibility in the video data stream and, on the other hand, from a driving situation in the area around the motor vehicle, that his communication with the driver is not given the highest priority.
- the image of the driver to throttle communication may be replaced with an icon indicating the driver's reduced availability.
- a traffic sign with appropriate content can be shown, such as the German road traffic sign 101 (warning triangle with exclamation mark) for a general warning or a similar sign for a more specific warning, for example from the range 101-10 to 105-20.
- the sign shown may be adapted to a traffic system that applies in the area of the motor vehicle or in the area of the other person.
- a type of influence is determined depending on the communication.
- communication can be influenced depending on the other person, the communication channel used or even the communication content.
- an upcoming driving situation is predicted and the required level of attention for the upcoming driving situation is determined. Influencing the communication preferably takes place a predetermined time before the required attention is likely to exceed the predetermined threshold value.
- the influence can only be ended after the particular driving situation has ended.
- the influence is controlled in a gentle transition so as not to start or end suddenly.
- the transition is preferably determined on the basis of the prediction, but can also take place in a firmly predetermined manner.
- the driver can be prevented from being distracted or irritated by the intervention in the communication at the very moment when he should be paying more attention to driving the motor vehicle.
- the communication can then be influenced depending on the specific duration.
- the type of influence can be selected depending on the expected duration.
- a short duration could, for example, be bridged by pausing a transmitted stream of information; However, a signal could be issued to the external person for a longer expected duration.
- the communication can be influenced depending on a duration over which the required attention exceeds the predetermined threshold value.
- communication could initially be paused, and if the particular driving situation lasts longer than a predetermined time, the signal can be output.
- a device for controlling communication between a driver of a motor vehicle and another person outside the motor vehicle comprises the following elements: a scanning device for determining a driving situation of the motor vehicle; a processing device for determining a level of attention of the driver required to drive the motor vehicle on the basis of the driving situation; and for determining that the communication endangers the achievement of the required attention; and a device for influencing the communication depending on the required attention.
- the processing device can be designed to carry out a method described herein in whole or in part.
- the processing device can be designed electronically and in particular can have a programmable Microcomputer or microcontroller.
- the method can be in the form of a computer program product with program code means.
- the computer program product can also be stored on a computer-readable data carrier. Additional features or advantages of the method can be transferred to the device or vice versa.
- a motor vehicle includes an apparatus described herein.
- the motor vehicle can in particular include a passenger car, a truck or a bus.
- Figure 1 is a flowchart of a method
- Figure 2 a system
- Figure 3 illustrates an illustration of a prediction of required attention.
- Figure 1 shows a flowchart of a method 100 for controlling communication between a driver 105 of a motor vehicle 110 and another person 115 who is outside the motor vehicle 110.
- the driver 105 either controls the motor vehicle 110 himself or is the responsible supervisor of the partially automatic or autonomous motor vehicle 110.
- the control particularly concerns the movement of the motor vehicle 110.
- a driving situation of the motor vehicle 110 should be determined.
- an external driving situation can be determined in a step 120, a driving situation of the vehicle 110 in a step 125 and an internal driving situation in a step 130.
- the external driving situation may include aspects of where the motor vehicle 110 is located and what information must be taken into account to control the movement of the motor vehicle 110.
- step 120 can relate to the determination of another road user, the determination of an obstacle, the course or condition of a busy road, a maneuver such as merging, turning or parking, or an influence on the driving physics of the motor vehicle 110, for example a wet or icy road , a slope or crosswind.
- a vehicle is in a poorly visible area (blind spot), whether another vehicle is changing lanes into the lane traveled by the motor vehicle 110, which signal shows a traffic light , towards which the motor vehicle 110 is moving, what change in the signal is likely or what noises in the environment can be determined. For example, sounding a horn, a siren, a train or truck horn, or squealing tires can indicate a particular driving situation.
- Circumstances that affect navigation or route guidance of the motor vehicle 100 can also be determined. This can include, for example, a road layout, a maneuver to be carried out or passing an area in which increased attention is required, such as a residential area, a kindergarten, a hospital, a school, an event location or a pedestrian zone. Furthermore, dynamic information can be taken into account that can influence navigation or route guidance, for example a warning about a traffic jam, an accident site, a pothole, an object on the road or a deformation of the road due to prevailing heat.
- the driving situation related to the motor vehicle 110 can include aspects of how the motor vehicle 110 can be controlled in its surroundings. This particularly includes technical aspects that specify the limits of the control.
- a driving speed, a set direction or turn signal, an acceleration or deceleration can therefore be specified.
- tion or a lighting situation can be determined.
- a driving maneuver performed or impending with the motor vehicle 110 such as turning, overtaking, changing lanes, parking, stopping or driving off, can be determined.
- a traffic density on a road traveled by the motor vehicle can be determined, alternatively using on-board sensors or a messaging service such as RTTI.
- Other typical processes that require increased attention include requesting a parking or toll ticket or ordering or paying through the window, for example at a bank or snack bar.
- the internal driving situation may include aspects that may affect the driver 105 and affect his ability to focus his attention.
- step 130 it can be determined whether the driver 105 is carrying out an additional activity, for example eating or smoking. It can also be determined whether he interacts with the motor vehicle 110, for example whether he operates switches or other controls of the motor vehicle 110 or, for example, uses gesture or voice control.
- aspects of communication with the external person 115 can also contribute to the internal driving situation. In this way, it can be determined whether the driver 105 participates more passively or to what extent he also actively participates. It can be determined how many external people 115 take part in the communication. A transmission quality of communication, for example regarding Noise or dropouts can be determined. In addition, it can be determined with which external person 115 the driver 105 is communicating, how long the conversation has already lasted or how long it is expected to last.
- an upcoming driving situation can be predicted based on the determinations made. This can be done using a statistical model, a self-amplifying filter such as a Cayman filter, or a machine learning approach.
- a self-amplifying filter such as a Cayman filter
- a machine learning approach For example, an artificial neural network (ANN) can be trained to determine a particular driving situation in which an increased level of attention from the driver 105 is required. The increased level of attention can be predicted. Preferably, it is predicted how the required level of attention will develop in a subsequent period of time.
- Several courses can be determined, each with associated confidences or probabilities. This determination can be made continuously, whereby a course that has become unlikely can be discarded.
- the determinations made can be contextualized and/or saved.
- experiences of other drivers 105 in other motor vehicles 110 may be taken into account.
- Such experiences or certain driving situations or certain required levels of attention can be processed or distributed centrally.
- the prediction can be made based on externally obtained data.
- a required attention of the driver 105 can be determined based on the driving situation or its prediction.
- the required attention can also be predicted and here too, different courses can be predicted and given confidences or probabilities. It is preferably determined whether the required attention exceeds a predetermined threshold value.
- the threshold value can be determined dynamically, for example depending on the determination of the internal driving situation in step 130.
- the communication between the driver 105 and the external person 115 can be influenced.
- the transmission of the information can mations in the context of communication can be influenced, for example by reducing an output speed of transmitted information to the driver 105 when the required attention is increased.
- a signal may be provided to the driver 105 or the external person 115 to indicate the recommended reduction in communication.
- FIG. 2 shows a device 200 on board a motor vehicle 110.
- the device 200 includes a processing device 205, which can be connected to one or more sensors 210.
- Example sensors include a camera, a radar sensor, a LiDAR sensor, and an ultrasonic sensor.
- an interface 215 a further source of information can be accessed on board the motor vehicle 110, for example a navigation system, driving stability system or a system for controlling the driving speed.

- the device 230 includes an output device to provide an acoustic or optical signal, an image or a video data stream. The provision can be made to the external person 115 and/or the driver 105.
- the communication between the person 115 and the driver 105 is transmitted by the device 225 so that it can be influenced.
- the influence can, for example, consist of filtering out or feeding in a signal, changing the speed of a transmitted data stream or increasing or decreasing the intensity of the information flow.
- FIG. 3 shows an exemplary illustration 300 of a prediction of the required attention of a driver 105 for driving a motor vehicle.
- stuff 110 A time is shown in the horizontal direction.
- a certain required attention of the driver is shown for an upper section of the representation and an intensity of communication is shown in a lower section.
- a first course 305 represents a prediction of the required attention, with this prediction being assigned a high probability.
- the course shown can occur, for example, when merging onto a motorway.
- the motor vehicle 105 must be accelerated on an access road or an acceleration lane and steered into an adjacent lane. There is often only a limited path and therefore only a limited time available for this maneuver. Depending on the number of vehicles in the lane, the speed being driven there, and the ability of the motor vehicle 110 to accelerate, merging may be difficult and require high levels of concentration from the driver 105.
- a second history 310 represents a prediction for the same event, with the second history 310 having a lower probability.
- the second course 310 could be implemented, for example, if merging is made more difficult by another road user changing lanes to the intended lane.
- a third course 315 which has the lowest of the determined probabilities, can relate to the same process under optimal conditions, for example when there are no other vehicles in the area of the motor vehicle 110.
- the courses 305 - 315 can be compared with a threshold value 320. If a curve 305 - 315 exceeds the threshold value 320, a special driving situation with an increased level of attention required by the driver 105 may exist and the communication between him and the external person 115 may be influenced.
- a fourth course 325 shows an exemplary influence on the communication depending on the first course 305.
- Communication is already reduced before the course 305 has reached the threshold value 320. Reducing communication is preferably done with a smooth transition.
- the Communication can be increased again when the particular driving situation is over, with a gentle transition preferably being controlled here too.
- the influence could consist of a slower output of received communication information.
- the speed can be increased above the natural level as shown to allow the driver 115 to catch up in communication.
