종래 알려진 에틸렌 카보네이트와 프로필렌 카보네이트 합성은 촉매의 존재 하에서 이산화탄소와 에틸렌 옥사이드 또는 프로필렌 옥사이드를 반응시켜 제조되었으나, 이때 수반되는 반응이 산업적으로 유용한 반응속도를 얻기 위해서는 고온 및 고압의 이산화탄소 기체나 액체가 요구된다. 또한, 에틸렌 옥사이드의 경우 에틸렌으로부터 이를 합성하는 과정에 있어, 다량의 이산화탄소가 방출되는 문제가 존재한다. 고온 및 고압 조건 하에서는 에틸렌 옥사이드나 프로필렌 옥사이드가 분해 또는 중합되는 경향이 있으므로 반응 조건을 완화하기 위해 다양한 촉매가 개발되었다.
예를 들어 일본공개특허 특개평9-67365에는 Kl(요오드화 칼륨)을 촉매로 사용하는 방법이 개시되어 있고, 일본공개특허 소59-13776에는 트리부틸메틸 포스포늄 이오다이드와 같은 테트라알킬 포스포늄 할라이드(tetraalkyl phosphnium halide)를 촉매로 사용하는 방법이 각각 개시되어 있다. 이들 특허에는 100 내지 170℃의 온도에서 1 내지 5시간 반응시켰을 때 50 내지 95%의 수율이 얻어진다고 기재되어 있으나, 높은 수율을 획득하기 위해서는 고온에서 오랫동안 반응시켜야 하고, 원료인 이산화탄소와 알킬렌옥사이드의 수분 함량을 수백 ppm 이하로 조절해야 하는 문제가 있다. 이에 이온교환수지를 사용하는 방법이 제안되었으나, 이와 같은 방법은 80 내지 100℃에서의 수율이 낮은 문제가 있다.
종합하면, 에틸렌 카보네이트 및 프로필렌 카보네이트를 상업적으로 제조하기 위한 종래 기술은 고온에서 고압의 기체 및 액체 이산화탄소를 반응을 시켜야 하고, 원료의 수분 함량이 매우 낮아야 하는 등 반응 조건이 까다롭다. 또한, 여러 촉매들의 개발에도, 에틸렌 옥사이드를 만드는 과정에서의 이산화탄소 발생은 피할 수 없다.
이에, 고압의 이산화탄소, 용매 및 촉매 등의 사용이 수반될 필요가 없는 한편 에틸렌 옥사이드나 프로필렌 옥사이드의 사용이 불필요하며, 에틸렌 카보네이트와 프로필렌 카보네이트를 높은 농도로 획득할 수 있는 기술이 개발되는 경우 관련 분야에서 널리 적용될 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.
본 발명의 한 측면은 에틸렌 옥사이드 및 프로필렌 옥사이드, 이산화탄소, 용매 및 촉매 등의 사용이 수반될 필요가 없는 알킬렌 카보네이트의 합성 방법을 제공하는 것이다.
이에 본 발명의 일 견지에 의하면, 하기 화학식 1로 표현되는 액상의 화학식 1 화합물과 탄산수소염(MHCO3)을 혼합하는 단계를 포함하는, 알킬렌 카보네이트의 합성방법이 제공된다.
(상기 화학식 1에 있어서, X는 불소, 염소, 브롬, 및 요오드로 이루어진 그룹으로부터 선택되는 할로겐이며, R1 및 R2는 수소 및 (C1-C3)알킬기로 이루어지는 그룹으로부터 독립적으로 선택된다.)
본 발명에 의한 알킬렌 카보네이트의 합성 방법은 에틸렌 옥사이드, 프로필렌 옥사이드, 이산화탄소의 사용 또는 추가 투입이 불필요하며, 비교적 낮은 온도 및 낮은 압력 조건하에서도 높은 수율로 알킬렌 카보네이트를 획득할 수 있으며, 용매의 사용이 배제될 수 있어 후속적인 정제 과정이 간단하며 공정 경제 상 바람직하다.
도 1은 본 발명에 의해 에틸렌 카보네이트를 합성하는 경우 온도에 따른 생성물의 변화를 그래프로 나타낸 것이다.
도 2는 본 발명에 의해 에틸렌 카보네이트를 합성하는 경우 시간에 따른 반응물 및생성물의 변화를 NMR로 관찰한 결과를 나타낸 것이다.
도 3은 할로겐 종류에 따른 에틸렌 카보네이트의 수율을 그래프로 나타낸 것이다.
도 4는 본 발명의 일 예에 있어서 반응 후 반응 용액 내 생성물의 NMR 데이터를 나타낸 것이다.
도 5는 본 발명에 의해 에틸렌 카보네이트를 합성하는 경우 온도 및 시간에 따른 생성물 변화를 그래프로 나타낸 것이다.
도 6은 용매를 사용하지 않는 조건에서의 카보네이트 생산 수율을 확인한 결과를 그래프로 나타낸 것이다.
이하, 첨부된 도면을 참조하여 본 발명의 바람직한 실시 형태를 설명한다. 그러나, 본 발명의 실시 형태는 여러 가지 다른 형태로 변형될 수 있으며, 본 발명의 범위가 이하 설명하는 실시 형태로 한정되는 것은 아니다.
본 발명에 의한 에틸렌 카보네이트, 프로필렌 카보네이트 등을 포함하는 알킬렌카보네이트의 합성 방법은 에틸렌 옥사이드, 프로필렌 옥사이드, 이산화탄소 등의 사용이 불필요하며, 비교적 낮은 온도 및 압력 조건하에서도 높은 수율로 알킬렌 카보네이트를 획득할 수 있으며, 용매의 사용이 배제될 수 있어 후속적인 정제 과정이 간단하며 공정 경제 상 바람직하다.
보다 상세하게 본 발명의 알킬렌 카보네이트 합성 방법은 하기 화학식 1로 표현되는 액상의 화학식 1 화합물과 탄산수소염(MHCO3)을 혼합하는 단계를 포함하는 것이다.
이때, 상기 화학식 1에 있어서, X는 불소, 염소, 브롬, 및 요오드로 이루어진 그룹으로부터 선택되는 할로겐이며, R1 및 R2는 각각 수소 및 (C1-C3)알킬기로 이루어지는 그룹으로부터 독립적으로 선택된다. 바람직하게, 상기 R1 및 R2는 각각 독립적으로 수소 또는 메틸기이며,
화학식 1의 화합물에 있어서 X와 -OH기의 위치는 서로 바뀔 수 있고, R1과 R2의 위치도 서로 바뀔 수 있다.
보다 상세하게, 상기 화학식 1의 화합물은 하기 화학식 1-1의 할로겐화 에탄올이거나, 또는 하기 화학식 1-2 또는 화학식 1-3의 할로겐화 프로판올일 수 있다.
한편, 상기 탄산수소염(MHCO3)은 액상 또는 고상인 것일 수 있다. 보다 상세하게 본 발명의 알킬렌 카보네이트트 합성방법은 반응물로 액상의 화학식 1 화합물, 예를 들어 액상의 할로겐화 알코올과 용액상 또는 고상의 탄산수소염(MIHCO3)을 채용하며, 다만 에틸렌 옥사이드, 프로필렌 옥사이드, 추가적인 이산화탄소와 용매 등이 요구되지 않는다. 상기 탄산수소염(MHCO3)은 바람직하게는 고체 분말 형태인 것이다.
상기 혼합하는 단계의 수행에 의해 하기 반응식 1에 의해 액상의 알킬렌 카보네이트가 획득될 수 있는 것으로, 본 발명에 의하면 용매가 필수적이지 않으므로 생성물로부터의 후속적인 용매의 분리 과정이 간단하여 단일의 단계로써 고농도 프로필렌 카보네이트 혹은 에틸렌 카보네이트를 생성물로써 획득할 수 있다.

상기 반응식 1에서 확인할 수 있는 바와 같이 고상 또는 용액 상의 탄산수소염으로부터 유래된 바이카보네이트(HCO3
-)와 액상의 화학식 1 화합물, 예를 들어 할로겐화 알코올이 반응하게 되며, 상기 반응 결과물 중 MX는 고체상으로 획득되며, 따라서 고액분리에 의해 용이하게 분리될 수 있다.
상기 반응식 1에 있어서 금속(M+)은 알칼리 금속 양이온 일 수 있으며, 예를 들어 Li, Na, K 및 Cs로 이루어진 그룹으로부터 선택되는 것일 수 있다. 또한 유기 질소 화합물 기반 양이온 일 수 있으며, 예를 들어 암모늄 (NH4
+), 1차 암모늄 (NH3
+CH2CH2OH, NH3
+CH2CH3, NH3
+CH2CH2CH3 등), 2차 암모늄 (NH2
+(CH2CH2OH)2), NH2
+(CH2CH3)2, NH2
+(CH2CH2CH3)2 등), 3차 암모늄 (NH+(CH2CH2OH)3), NH+(CH2CH3)3, NH+(CH2CH2CH3)3 등) 및 4차 암모늄 (N+(CH2CH2OH)4), N+(CH2CH3)4, N+(CH2CH2CH3)4 등)으로 이루어진 그룹으로부터 선택되는 것일 수 있다.
본 발명에 있어서 상기 혼합하는 단계는 40℃ 이상 150℃ 미만, 예를 들어 45℃ 내지 90℃의 온도에서 수행되는 것일 수 있으며, 바람직하게는 60℃ 내지 90℃의 온도, 보다 바람직하게는 65℃ 내지 85℃의 온도에서 수행되는 것일 수 있고, 상기 혼합하는 단계에 있어서 추가의 압력을 가하지 않고서도 70% 이상, 나아가 80% 이상의 수율로 프로필렌 카보네이트 및 에틸렌 카보네이트를 제조할 수 있다.
한편, 에틸렌 카보네이트를 제조하는 단계에 있어서 온도가 상기 본 발명의 범위 미만인 경우에는 반응이 다소 느릴 수 있고, 본 발명의 범위를 초과하는 경우에는 하기 반응식 3과 같은 부반응 증가에 의해 에틸렌 글라이콜 및 프로필렌 글라이콜 생성량이 증가하여 알킬렌 카보네이트의 수율이 낮아지는 문제가 있다.

본 발명의 상기 혼합하는 단계가 수행되는 시간은 15 분 내지 24 시간일 수 있으며, 예를 들어 30분 내지 6시간일 수 있다. 반응 시간이 15분 미만인 경우 생성물의 수율이 불충분할 수 있으며, 반응 시간이 24시간을 초과하는 경우에는 반응 시간 증가에 따른 생성물의 수율 증가가 크기 않아 공정경제 상 바람직하지 않은 측면이 있다.
다만, 본 발명은 상기 혼합하는 단계에 있어서 추가의 용매를 사용하는 것을 배제하는 것은 아니며, 필요에 따라 물; 알코올, 디메틸포름아미드, 아세톤, 에터 그리고 에스터 등 다양한 형태의 극성 유기용매; 및 이들 성분 중 적어도 2 이상의 혼합이 이용될 수 있다. 바람직하게는 물을 용매로 혼합할 수 있다.
본 발명의 프로필렌 카보네이트 및 에틸렌 카보네이트의 합성 방법은 바람직하게는 밀폐된 반응기를 사용하는 것이며, 이때 반응 용기의 외부 압력은 대기압으로 유지되며, 반응 진행에 따라 밀폐된 용기 내부 압력은 변화할 수 있다. 또한 용기가 밀폐되지 않아 내부 및 외부 기압이 모두 대기압 조건으로 유지되어도 반응 진행이 가능하다.
한편, 상기 혼합하는 단계는 화학식 1 화합물, 예를 들어 할로겐화 알코올과 탄산수소염(MHCO3)을 1: 0.5 내지 2의 몰비로 혼합하는 것일 수 있으며, 바람직하게는 1:1의 동일한 몰비로 혼합하는 것이다.
본 발명의 반응물인 액상의 화학식 1 화합물, 예를 들어 할로겐화 알코올과 용액상 또는 고상의 탄산수소염(MHCO3)은 각각 합성에 의해 획득하거나 또는 상업적으로 입수할 수 있으며, 이들의 입수 경로 및 합성 과정이 특히 제한되는 것은 아니다.
예를 들어 상기 화학식 1로 표현되는 화합물은 할로겐 치환된 질소 화합물과 알킬렌을 용매 하에서 혼합하여, 하기 반응식 2에 의해 획득되는 것일 수 있다.
[반응식 2] 2알킬렌 + 2XY + 2H2O = 2화학식 1 화합물 + 2HY
상기 반응식 2에서 X는 불소, 염소, 브롬, 및 요오드로 이루어진 그룹으로부터 선택되는 할로겐이고, Y는 질소 화합물이며 알킬렌은 에틸렌 및 프로필렌으로 이루어진 그룹으로부터 선택될 수 있다.
이때, 상기 질소 화합물(Y)은 질소 화합물의 짝산(HY)의 pKa 가 7 내지 14, 바람직하게는 pKa 가 7 내지 11인 질소 화합물인 것이 바람직하며, 예를 들어 이미드 작용기를 가진 화합물 및 암모늄 화합물로부터 선택되는 적어도 하나인 것이 바람직하며, 보다 구체적으로는 이미드 작용기를 가진 화합물로 숙신이미드, 하이단토인, 시아누레이트, 등; 그리고 암모늄 화합물로는 암모늄, 모노에탄올암모늄, 디에탄올암모늄 등이 사용 가능하다.
본 발명의 알킬렌 카보네이트의 합성방법에 의하면, 알킬렌 카보네이트가 액상으로 높은 수율 및 농도로 획득될 수 있으므로, 후속적인 정제 과정이 불필요하다. 다만, 경우에 따라 순도 향상을 위해 정제 단계를 수행할 수 있으며, 예를 들어 건조 단계를 추가로 수행할 수 있다.
이와 같이 본 발명에 의하면, 고온, 고압, 촉매, 용매, 에틸렌 옥사이드, 프로필렌 옥사이드 및 이산화탄소의 사용이 모두 필수적으로 요구되지 않으며, 온화한 온도및 압력에서 단일의 단계로 수행될 수 있고, 또한 그 결과 높은 수율로써 알킬렌 카보네이트를 획득할 수 있으며, 추가의 후속적인 정제가 필수적이지 않다.
이하, 구체적인 실시예를 통해 본 발명을 보다 구체적으로 설명한다. 하기 실시예는 본 발명의 이해를 돕기 위한 예시에 불과하며, 본 발명의 범위가 이에 한정되는 것은 아니다.
실시예
1. 알킬렌 카보네이트의 합성
제조예 1
용량 11ml의 수열합성 반응 용기에 액상의 브로모에탄올과 NaHCO3 분말을 각각 5mmol씩 10ml 물과 혼합하여 담은 후 이를 상압 조건에서 밀폐 후 45분 동안 25 내지 105℃의 범위에서 가열하였다. 그 후 25, 45, 50, 65, 85, 105℃에서 반응 용액 내 존재하는 생성물을 관찰하였다.
제조예 2
용량 20ml의 바이알에 액상의 브로모에탄올과 NaHCO3 분말을 각각 1 mmol씩 10ml 물과 혼합하여 담은 후 이를 상압 조건에서 50℃에서 8시간 동안 반응을 수행한 후 반응 용액 내 존재하는 생성물을 관찰하였다.
제조예 3
용량 11ml의 수열합성 반응 용기에 액상의 브로모에탄올과 NaHCO3 분말을 각각 9.57g, 6.43g씩 혼합하여 담은 후 이를 상압 조건에서 밀폐 후 12시간 동안 45℃, 65℃, 85℃ 조건에서 가열 후, 반응 용액 내 존재하는 생성물을 관찰하였다.
제조예 4
액상의 브로모에탄올 대신 액상의 아이오도에탄올을 사용한 것을 제외하고는 제조예 2와 동일한 조건으로 반응을 수행한 후 반응 용액 내 존재하는 생성물을 관찰하였다.
2. 생성물 확인
(1) 온도에 따른 생성물 변화
제조예 1과 같은 공정에 의해 알킬렌 카보네이트 합성 시 25, 45, 65, 85, 105℃에서 반응 용액 내 존재하는 생성물을 NMR 분석을 통해 관찰하였다.
도 1은 이와 같은 결과를 그래프로 나타낸 것이다. 도 1에서 확인할 수 있는 바와 같이 본 발명의 방법에 의하면 상압의 45 내지 90℃의 온화한 온도에서 75% 이상의 수율로 알킬렌 카보네이트를 획득할 수 있으며, 60 내지 85℃의 온도에서는 약 85% 이상의 수율로 알킬렌 카보네이트를 획득할 수 있음을 확인할 수 있었다.
(2) 시간에 따른 생성물 변화
제조예 2과 같은 공정에 의해 알킬렌 카보네이트 합성 시 50℃에서 가열하면서 0h, 2h, 4h, 6h의 반응 시간동안 HCO3
-가 에틸렌카보네이트로 변화하는 모습을 NMR로 관찰하였다.
도 2는 이와 같은 결과를 나타낸 것으로, 반응 시작(0h) 시에 존재하지 않았던 에틸렌카보네이트가 생성되고, 시간에 따라 생성물이 증가하는 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 또한 동일 결과에 따라 용기가 밀폐되지 않아, 용기 내 외부 모두 대기압으로 유지되는 경우에도 브로모 에탄올이 에틸렌 카보네이트로 전환될 수 있음을 확인하였다.
(3) 할로겐 종류에 따른 생성물 변화
제조예 2 및 제조예 4와 같은 공정에 의해 알킬렌 카보네이트 합성 시 반응 용액 내 존재하는 생성물을 NMR을 이용하여 관찰하였으며, 그 결과 도 3과 같이 브로모 에탄올을 사용한 제조예 2 및 아이오도 에탄올을 사용한 제조예 5 모두에서 에틸렌 카보네이트가 획득되는 것을 확인할 수 있었다.
(4) 온도 및 시간에 따른 생성물 변화
제조예 1과 같은 공정에 의해 알킬렌 카보네이트 합성 시 45, 55, 65, 75 및 85℃에서 반응 시간에 따라 반응 용액 내 존재하는 생성물을 NMR을 이용하여 관찰하였다.
그 중 45℃에서 95분간 가열한 후의 반응 용액의 NMR을 측정하여 도 4와 같은 결과를 확인하였으며, 또한 도 5와 같이 다양한 온도 및 시간 조건에서도 80% 이상의 높은 수율을 획득할 수 있는 것을 확인하였다.
(4) 용매를 사용하지 않는 조건에서의 카보네이트 생산 관찰
제조예 3과 같은 공정에 의해 알킬렌 카보네이트 합성 시 12시간 동안 45, 65, 85℃에서 가열 후 반응 온도에 따라 반응 용액 내 존재하는 생성물을 NMR을 이용하여 관찰하였다.
그 중 65℃에서 12 시간 가열한 후 카보네이트 수율은 도 6와 같이 97%에 이르는 수율을 나타내었으며, 이와 같이 용매를 사용하지 않는 조건에서도 반응물만을 이용하여 높은 수율의 에틸렌 카보네이트가 생성됨을 확인하였다.
이상에서 본 발명의 실시예에 대하여 상세하게 설명하였지만 본 발명의 권리범위는 이에 한정되는 것은 아니고, 청구범위에 기재된 본 발명의 기술적 사상을 벗어나지 않는 범위 내에서 다양한 수정 및 변형이 가능하다는 것은 당 기술분야의 통상의 지식을 가진 자에게는 자명할 것이다.

- 제1항에 있어서, 상기 탄산수소염(MHCO3)은 액상 또는 고상인, 알킬렌 카보네이트의 합성방법.
- 제1항에 있어서, 상기 혼합하는 단계는 하기 반응식 1에 의해 액상의 알킬렌 카보네이트가 획득되는, 알킬렌 카보네이트의 합성방법.2M+ + 2HCO3 - + 2(화학식 1 화합물) = 2알킬렌 카보네이트 + 2MX + 2H2O[반응식 1]
- 제2항에 있어서, 상기 반응식 1에 있어서 금속(M+)은 알칼리 금속 양이온, 암모늄 (NH4 +), 1차 암모늄, 2차 암모늄, 3차 암모늄 및 4차 암모늄으로 이루어지는 그룹으로부터 선택되는, 알킬렌 카보네이트의.
- 제1항에 있어서, 상기 화학식 1로 표현되는 화합물은 할로겐화 에탄올인, 알킬렌 카보네이트의 합성방법.
