しかし、その一方で、異常な充放電などに起因する昇温や発熱によって、電池内部にガスが発生し、例えば力(F0)で矢印に沿って平板状電極端子部材101を押圧することで電池内部の圧力が上昇し、その結果、電池が破裂して破損に至る虞がある(図14B参照)。したがって、このような電池では、密封性とともに、より高い安全性の確保が求められている。
前記外装体には絶縁部材を介して接合された平板状端子が具備されており、
前記平板状端子は第1端子部材と第2端子部材とを含んで成り、
前記第1端子部材および前記第2端子部材は互いに異なる線膨張係数を有する材料から形成されており、

上記の二次電池を本開示では「本開示の二次電池」または「本開示の電池」あるいは単に「二次電池」または「電池」と省略して記載する場合もある。
本明細書でいう「二次電池」は、充電および放電の繰り返しが可能な電池のことを指している。従って、本開示に係る二次電池は、その名称に過度に拘泥されるものでなく、例えば蓄電デバイスなども対象に含まれ得る。
このように、複数の成分が含有されて成る形態ゆえ、正極材層および負極材層は、それぞれ“正極合材層”および“負極合材層”などと称すこともできる。
正極材層に含まれ得る導電助剤としては、特に制限されるわけではないが、例えば、サーマルブラック、ファーネスブラック、チャンネルブラック、ケッチェンブラックおよびアセチレンブラック等のカーボンブラック、黒鉛、カーボンナノチューブおよび気相成長炭素繊維等の炭素繊維、銅、ニッケル、アルミニウムおよび銀等の金属粉末、ならびに、ポリフェニレン誘導体などから選択される少なくとも1種を挙げることができる。
負極活物質の酸化物としては、酸化シリコン、酸化スズ、酸化インジウム、酸化亜鉛および酸化リチウムなどから成る群から選択される少なくとも1種を挙げることができる。
負極活物質のリチウム合金は、リチウムと合金形成され得る金属と、リチウムとの合金であればよく、例えば、Al、Si、Pb、Sn、In、Bi、Ag、Ba、Ca、Hg、Pd、Pt、Te、Zn、Laなどの金属とリチウムとの2元、3元またはそれ以上の合金であってよい。このような酸化物は、その構造形態としてアモルファスとなっていてよい。結晶粒界または欠陥といった不均一性に起因する劣化が引き起こされにくくなるからである。
負極材層に含まれ得る導電助剤としては、特に制限されるわけではないが、例えば、サーマルブラック、ファーネスブラック、チャンネルブラック、ケッチェンブラックおよびアセチレンブラック等のカーボンブラック、黒鉛、カーボンナノチューブおよび気相成長炭素繊維等の炭素繊維、銅、ニッケル、アルミニウムおよび銀等の金属粉末、ならびに、ポリフェニレン誘導体などから選択される少なくとも1種を挙げることができる。
本発明の二次電池は、電極組立体および必要に応じて電解質を収納する又は包み込むことができる外装体およびその周辺部品に関して特徴を有している。特に、二次電池の外装体とそれに取り付けられる電極端子(すなわち正極端子または負極端子)として機能し得る「平板状端子」に関連する要素の点で特徴を有している。
ステンレス鋼(SUS)の場合、線膨張係数は約17×10-6/Kである。
銅の場合、線膨張係数は約17×10-6/Kである。
ニッケルの場合、線膨張係数は約13×10-6/Kである。
あるいは、第2端子部材の線膨張係数が第1端子部材の線膨張係数よりも大きくてよい。換言すると、第1端子部材の線膨張係数が第2端子部材の線膨張係数よりも小さくてよい。
図1に本開示の一実施形態に係る二次電池10を示す。
例えば図1Aに示す通り、二次電池10は、第1端子部材1と第2端子部材2とが互いに結合されて成る平板状端子5と、絶縁部材3と、電極組立体11(例えば図10参照)と、この電極組立体11および必要に応じて電解質を収納することができる外装体4とから主に構成されていてよい。
例えば図4Aに示す通り、二次電池20は、第1端子部材21と第2端子部材22とが互いに結合されて成る平板状端子25と、絶縁部材23と、電極組立体11(図10参照)と、この電極組立体11および必要に応じて電解質を収納することができる外装体24とから主に構成されていてよい。
二次電池30は、第1端子部材31と第2端子部材32とが互いに結合されて成る平板状端子35と、絶縁部材33と、電極組立体11(図10参照)と、この電極組立体11および必要に応じて電解質を収納することができる外装体34とから主に構成されていてよい。
二次電池40は、第1端子部材41と第2端子部材42とが互いに結合されて成る平板状端子45と、絶縁部材43と、電極組立体11(図10参照)と、この電極組立体11および必要に応じて電解質を収納することができる外装体44とから主に構成されていてよい。
本開示において「リード体」または「タブ」とは、電極組立体の正極または負極と電気的に接続され得る導電性部材を意味し、電極組立体から突出又は延出していてよい。かかるタブは、少なくとも外装体の開口部を通して平板状端子の内側主面、特に内側端子部材に取り付けられることができ、当該内側端子部材と電極組立体の正極または負極のいずれか一方の電極層との間の電気的接続を担うことができる。このようなリード体またはタブは、上記で説明した「集電体」(すなわち、「正極集電体」または「負極集電体」)から延出していてよく、このような集電体と同じ材料から構成されてよい。
また、図11に示す態様では、平板状端子を円形で記載しているが、矩形や他の幾何学的な形状であってよい。
本開示の二次電池、特に電極端子(又は端子部材)付近の構成は、従来公知の製造方法と同様に製造することができる。
具体的には、平板状端子と、開口部を有する絶縁部材と、同じく開口部を有する外装体とをこの順序で積層し、加熱しながら加圧することで、本発明に従う電極端子(又は端子部材)付近の構成を形成することができる。
平板状端子における第1端子部材と第2端子部材との結合方法に特に制限はない。例えば従来公知の金属板の接合方法などを特に制限なく使用することができる。
実施例1の二次電池として、例えば図1に模式的に示すボタン型の構造を有する二次電池10を作製した。各構成は以下に記載する通りであった。電極組立体11は、常套的な電極組立体の製法に準じて作製した。
第1端子部材1:線膨張係数23×10-6/Kのアルミニウム(Al)
第2端子部材2:線膨張係数17×10-6/Kステンレス鋼(SUS304)
絶縁部材3:変性ポリプロピレン
外装体4:ステンレス鋼(SUS304)
外装体4の円筒形のカップ状部材内に非水電解液とともに電極組立体11を配置し、蓋状部材でカップ状部材を溶接で閉じた。このときタブを介して電極組立体11の正極と平板状端子5の第2端子部材2とを電気的に接続し、同じく、タブを介して電極組立体11の負極と外装体4のカップ状部材とを電気的に接続した。
蓋状部材の円形の開口部の周囲に同様の開口部を有する同心円状の円盤形の絶縁部材3を配置した。
絶縁部材3の上面にさらに円盤形の平板状端子5を加熱しながら押圧することで配置した。ことき、平板状端子5の第2端子部材2と絶縁部材3とが互いに接着していた。
以下の平板状端子を用いたことを除いて実施例1と同様にして図1に示す二次電池10を作製した。
平板状端子5:第1端子部材1と第2端子部材2とのクラッド材

以下の平板状端子を用いたことを除いて実施例4と同様にして図4に示す二次電池20を作製した。

この二次電池20では、図4Bに示す通り、平板状端子25の中央部が下方に反ることで異常な昇温時により低い圧力で封止部が開裂した。
外装体、特に外装体の蓋状部材の厚みを小さくしたことを除いて実施例4~6と同様にして図6に示す二次電池30をそれぞれ作製した(実施例7~9の二次電池)。
二次電池30では、図6に示す通り、平板状端子35の中央部が下方に反り、それに対向するように外装体34が上方に反ることで異常な昇温時に絶縁部材33と第2端子部材32との接着面積がより減少し、さらにより低い圧力で封止部が開裂した。
絶縁部材に隆起部を設けたことを除いて実施例4~6と同様にして図7に示す二次電池40を作製した(実施例10~12の二次電池)。
図7および図8に示す二次電池40において、製造の際に平板状端子45よりも大きな面積を有する均一な厚みの絶縁部材を準備し、この絶縁部材に平板状端子45を押圧することで絶縁部材の平坦部43aおよび隆起部43bを形成した(図8参照)。
図7に示す二次電池40において、隆起部43bの高さ(T3b)は、第2端子部材42の厚み(T2)の範囲内に調節した。
実施例4~6で作製した二次電池(図4)と比較して、実施例10~12の二次電池40では、第2端子部材42と絶縁部材43との接着面積が向上することで、正常な温度範囲(例えば常温(25℃))において封止性が向上した(図8A)。また、安全性をより高めることができた。さらに、異常に昇温した場合には、図8Bに示すように平板状端子45が反ることで第2端子部材42と絶縁部材の平坦部43aとの接着面積が減少し、より低い圧力で封止部を開裂させることができた。

- 電極組立体、および、該電極組立体を収納する外装体を有して成る二次電池であって、
前記外装体には絶縁部材を介して接合された平板状端子が具備されており、
前記平板状端子は第1端子部材と第2端子部材とを含んで成り、
前記第1端子部材および前記第2端子部材は互いに異なる線膨張係数を有する材料から形成されており、
前記第1端子部材が前記第2端子部材上に積層するように前記第1端子部材と前記第2端子部材とが互いに積層しており、
前記第2端子部材が前記絶縁部材に対向するように前記平板状端子が前記絶縁部材上に配置されている、二次電池。 - 昇温により前記平板状端子が反ることで前記平板状端子が前記絶縁部材から剥離する、請求項1に記載の二次電池。
- 前記第1端子部材の線膨張係数が前記第2端子部材の線膨張係数よりも大きい、請求項1または2に記載の二次電池。
- 前記第2端子部材の線膨張係数が前記第1端子部材の線膨張係数よりも大きい、請求項1または2に記載の二次電池。
- 前記第1端子部材の線膨張係数と前記第2端子部材の線膨張係数との差が5×10-6/K以上である、請求項1~4のいずれかに記載の二次電池。
- 前記第1端子部材を形成する材料がアルミニウム、ステンレス鋼、銅およびニッケルから成る群から選択される、請求項1~5のいずれかに記載の二次電池。
- 前記第2端子部材を形成する材料がアルミニウム、ステンレス鋼、銅およびニッケルから成る群から選択される、請求項1~6のいずれかに記載の二次電池。
- 前記第1端子部材を形成する材料がアルミニウムであり、前記第2端子部材を形成する材料がステンレス鋼、銅およびニッケルから成る群から選択される、あるいは前記第2端子部材を形成する材料がニッケルであり、前記第1端子部材を形成する材料がアルミニウム、ステンレス鋼および銅から成る群から選択される、請求項1に記載の二次電池。
- 前記第1端子部材を形成する材料がステンレス鋼であり、前記第2端子部材を形成する材料がアルミニウム、銅およびニッケルから成る群から選択される、あるいは前記第2端子部材を形成する材料がステンレス鋼であり、前記第1端子部材を形成する材料がアルミニウム、銅およびニッケルから成る群から選択される、請求項1に記載の二次電池。
- 前記第1端子部材を形成する材料がニッケルであり、前記第2端子部材を形成する材料がアルミニウム、ステンレス鋼および銅から成る群から選択される、あるいは前記第2端子部材を形成する材料がアルミニウムであり、第1端子部材を形成する材料がステンレス鋼、銅およびニッケルから成る群から選択される、請求項1に記載の二次電池。
- 前記絶縁部材が前記平板状端子の周囲縁部の少なくとも一部を覆う隆起部を有する、請求項1~10のいずれかに記載の二次電池。
- 前記平板状端子の周囲縁部の少なくとも一部を覆う前記隆起部の厚みが、前記平板状端子の厚みの5%以上20%以下である、請求項11に記載の二次電池。
- 前記平板状端子は正極および負極の一方であり、前記外装体は該正極および該負極の他方である、請求項1~12のいずれかに記載の二次電池。
- 前記外装体が金属外装体であり、該金属外装体がカップ状部材および蓋状部材の2パーツ構成を有して成る、請求項1~13のいずれかに記載の二次電池。
- ボタン形またはコイン形の形状を有する、請求項1~14のいずれかに記載の二次電池。
- 前記電極組立体の電極として、リチウムイオンを吸蔵放出可能な正極および負極が含まれる、請求項1~15のいずれかに記載の二次電池。
