Definitions
- the present invention provides a cathode active material for a lithium secondary battery capable of simultaneously improving electrochemical properties and stability in a mutual trade-off relationship by introducing a step structure into the surface portion of the lithium composite oxide constituting the cathode active material, and It relates to a lithium secondary battery including the same.
- a battery stores electric power by using a material capable of electrochemical reaction between the anode and the cathode.
- a representative example of such a battery is a lithium secondary battery that stores electrical energy by a difference in chemical potential when lithium ions are intercalated/deintercalated in a positive electrode and a negative electrode.
- the lithium secondary battery is manufactured by using a material capable of reversible intercalation/deintercalation of lithium ions as a positive electrode and a negative electrode active material, and filling an organic electrolyte solution or a polymer electrolyte solution between the positive electrode and the negative electrode.
- a lithium composite oxide is used as a cathode active material for a lithium secondary battery.
- composite oxides such as LiCoO 2 , LiMn 2 O 4 , LiNiO 2 , LiMnO 2 have been studied.
- LiCoO 2 is used the most because of its excellent lifespan characteristics and charge/discharge efficiency, but it is expensive due to the resource limitation of cobalt used as a raw material, so it has a limitation in price competitiveness.
- LiMnO 2 , LiMn 2 O 4 Lithium manganese oxide has advantages of excellent thermal stability and low price, but has problems in that it has a small capacity and poor high temperature characteristics.
- the LiNiO 2 -based positive electrode active material exhibits high discharge capacity battery characteristics, but is difficult to synthesize due to a cation mixing problem between Li and a transition metal, and thus has a large problem in rate characteristics.
- Li by-products are generated depending on the degree of intensification of such cation mixing, and most of these Li by-products are composed of LiOH and Li 2 CO 3 compounds, so there is a problem of gelation during the preparation of the positive electrode paste and the electrode It causes gas generation due to charging and discharging after manufacturing. Residual Li 2 CO 3 increases cell swelling, which not only reduces the cycle, but also causes the battery to swell.
- the demand for a high-Ni type positive electrode active material having a Ni content of 50% or more as a secondary battery positive active material has started to increase.
- this high-Ni type positive active material exhibits high capacity characteristics, there is a problem in that structural instability due to Li/Ni cation mixing occurs as the Ni content in the positive active material increases. Due to the structural instability of the positive electrode active material, the lithium secondary battery may rapidly deteriorate not only at high temperatures but also at room temperature.
- a predetermined trade-off relationship may be established between some indices indicating electrochemical properties of the positive electrode active material and some indices indicating stability. Therefore, when the capacity characteristics of the positive electrode active material are excessively improved, there is a risk that, on the contrary, the stability of the particles constituting the positive active material is lowered, and thus stable charging and discharging performance cannot be exhibited.
- an object of the present invention is to provide a positive electrode active material capable of resolving low structural stability while maintaining high electrochemical properties of a conventional positive electrode active material for a lithium secondary battery, particularly a high-Ni type positive electrode active material.
- a cathode active material for a battery To provide a cathode active material for a battery.
- Another object of the present invention is to provide a lithium secondary battery in which a positive electrode including a lithium composite oxide as defined herein is used.
- a technology for improving stability by reducing surface side reactions of a positive electrode active material by allowing a light element, typically boron, to exist in an oxide form among conventional positive electrode active materials has been proposed.
- the light element can reduce the surface side reaction of the positive electrode active material, but on the contrary, it increases the content of lithium-containing impurities in the surface depending on the mode of existence, thereby also acting as a cause of lowering the electrochemical properties of the positive electrode active material.
- the present inventors have found that when a step structure is introduced into the surface portion of a lithium composite oxide capable of intercalation and deintercalation of lithium, electrochemical properties that are in a trade-off relationship with each other And it has been confirmed that stability can be improved at the same time.
- the lithium composite oxide is a positive electrode having a surface portion having a step structure.
- An active material is provided.
- the stepped structure formed on the surface of the lithium composite oxide may be a terrace-step-kink structure.
- the lithium composite oxide is a lithium composite oxide including at least nickel and cobalt, and may further include at least one selected from manganese and aluminum.
