- the difference in JND values between adjacent gradations is the same for all adjacent gradations.
- Lmax is 1000 (cd / m 2 ).
- the maximum JND value is 810.49.
- the minimum brightness is 0.0015 (cd / m 2 ).
- L 19 corresponding to the provisional minimum luminance calculated by the recursive calculation is 0.05268 (cd / m 2 ). Therefore, the provisional minimum JND value Jmin_tmp is 1.62 (cd / m 2 ).
- Jext is 19. Therefore, as shown in FIG. 8A, ⁇ JND is 3.246.
- the target JND value calculation unit 12 calculates the target JND value Jm_target for each gradation based on the formula 6 shown in FIG. 8B.
- M in Equation 6 is an integer from 0 to 255.
- the relationship between each gradation and the target JND value is as shown in FIG. In FIG. 11, the six target JND values in the rectangle shown by the broken line shown in FIG. 11 have a value of less than 1, and correspond to an extended JND index (-19 to 0).
- the target luminance calculation unit 13 calculates the target luminance of the first and second gradation characteristics (see FIG. 12) based on the target JND value of each gradation. In the range where the target JND value is 1 or more (the range of the first gradation characteristic), the target luminance calculation unit 13 converts the target luminance value into the target luminance based on the equation 4 shown in FIG. 7B. That is, the first gradation characteristic conforms to the gradation characteristic of DICOM's GSDF. In other words, the first gradation characteristic is determined so as to satisfy the relationship between the JND value (JND index) of 1 or more and the corresponding luminance (see the solid line in FIG. 12).
- Equation 4 cannot be applied when the target JND value is less than 1. Therefore, in the range where the target JND value is less than 1 (the range of the second gradation characteristic), the target luminance calculation unit 13 converts the target luminance value into the target luminance based on the approximate expression Lapprox described later.
- the extended JND index acquired by the extended JND difference calculation unit 10 has an integer JND value, but the approximate expression Lapprox can also apply a JND value other than an integer. That is, the extended JND index and the corresponding luminance and the approximate expression Lapprox have essentially the same gradation characteristics, although there is a difference in whether or not the applicable JND value includes a value other than an integer.
- the approximate expression Lapprox is an expression showing the relationship between the JND value (JND index) less than 1 and the corresponding brightness corresponding to the JND value. That is, in the embodiment, the approximate expression Lapprox (see the broken line in FIG. 12) is an expression that determines the second gradation characteristic. Then, the second gradation characteristic is determined so as to satisfy the relationship between the JND value (JND index) less than 1 and the corresponding luminance (approximate expression Lapprox of the broken line in FIG. 12).
- the first gradation characteristic (gradation characteristic with brightness of 0.05 (cd / m 2 ) or more) conforms to the gradation characteristic of DICOM's GSDF, and the JND value and the corresponding correspondence. Satisfy the relationship with brightness. Further, the second gradation characteristic (gradation characteristic having a brightness of less than 0.05 (cd / m 2 )) also satisfies the relationship between the JND value and the corresponding brightness corresponding to the JND value. Therefore, in the embodiment, the gradation characteristics compatible with GSDF are extended to the luminance region of less than 0.05 (cd / m 2 ).
- Equation 4 is an equation for converting a JND value into brightness, but cannot be applied when the JND value is less than 1.
- the extended JND index is an integer, but the target JND value for each gradation is not always an integer. Based on these, the approximate expression generation unit 14 generates a relational expression capable of appropriately converting the JND value to the luminance even if the JND value is less than 1 and the JND value is other than an integer.
- the existing JND value corresponding to GSDF and the corresponding brightness corresponding to this are referred to as a value V1 related to the first gradation characteristic (see FIG. 2).
- the extended JND value and the corresponding brightness corresponding thereto are referred to as a value V2 relating to the second gradation characteristic.
- the approximate expression generation unit 14 generates the approximate expression Lapprox based on the values V1 and V2 relating to the first and second gradation characteristics.
- the format of the approximate expression Lapprox assumes a quintic function in the embodiment, but is not limited to this and can be changed as appropriate.
- the approximate expression generator 14 relates to the first gradation characteristic in addition to the value V2 related to the second gradation characteristic so that the approximate expression Lapprox is smoothly connected to the curve based on GSDF (the curve in the range where the JND index is 1 or more).
- the approximate expression Lapprox is also generated using the value V1 (see FIG. 12).
- the value V1 related to the first gradation characteristic may have, for example, as many JND indexes as the extended JND index. That is, in the embodiment, the value V2 relating to the second gradation characteristic has a JND index of -18 to 0 and the corresponding brightness corresponding thereto, so that the value V1 relating to the first gradation characteristic has a JND index of 1 to 19.
- the approximate expression generation unit 14 substitutes the values V1 and V2 related to the first and second gradation characteristics into the approximate expression Lapprox, and performs regression analysis to acquire the coefficients a to e and the intercept f of the approximate expression Lapprox. As a result, the approximate expression generation unit 14 can generate the approximate expression Lapprox.
- the conversion unit 11 acquires the minimum luminance Lmin and the maximum luminance Lmax.
- the conversion unit 11 converts the minimum brightness Lmin to the minimum JND value Jmin, and converts the maximum brightness Lmax to the maximum JND value Jmax.
- the target JND value calculation unit 12 calculates the target JND value Jm_target by a known method as described below. As shown in FIG. 3, the target JND value calculation unit 12 acquires the minimum JND value Jmin and the maximum JND value Jmax from the conversion unit 11. - the LUT data is configured as a table (conversion table) of output data associated with the input data.
- the input data corresponds to the image data acquired from the information processing device 2, and the image data converted via the LUT 1B is input to the video processing unit 1C.
- the image display device 1 includes the LUT 1B, the correspondence of the LUT data can be easily changed.
- the number (bit depth) at which the gradation of the LUT data can be expressed is unique to the image display device 1, and the number of bits of the output data is generally larger than that of the input data.
- the LUT data of the image display device 1 is set to a default value as the calibration execution process of FIG. 4 to be described later. Then, the control unit 1G adjusts the brightness of white so that the brightness of the image display unit 1D is equal to or higher than the maximum brightness value which is generally a target.
- the image used for the measurement may display the image data from the information processing device 2, or may display the designated image data saved in advance by the image display device 1.
- the sensor 1H measures the brightness of the image display unit 1D at the designated gradation value (measured gradation value).
- the measurement gradation value and the measurement brightness corresponding thereto are associated with each other as LUT data of the basic characteristics of the image display device 1.
- the target luminance calculation unit 13 acquires the target luminance of each gradation
- appropriate LUT data for achieving the target luminance of each gradation is selected from the LUT data of the basic characteristics.
- the target brightness acquired by the target brightness calculation unit 13 conforms to GSDF.
- the target brightness acquired by the target brightness calculation unit 13 corresponds to the expanded GSDF. Therefore, for the LUT1B, the LUT data corresponding to the GSDF or the extended GSDF is selected.
- the brightness of the LUT data between the measured gradation values can be obtained by interpolating.

- the image display unit 1D can be composed of, for example, a liquid crystal display, an organic EL display, or the like.

- Operation unit 1F operates the image display device 1, and can be composed of, for example, a button, a touch panel, a voice input device, or the like.
- the minimum brightness Lmin and the maximum brightness Lmax are input via the application included in the information processing device 2, but may be input using the operation unit 1F.
- Control unit 1G controls (adjusts) the brightness of the image displayed on the image display unit 1D when calibrating the flowchart described later.
- FIG. 4 shows the basic process of calibration, adjusting the brightness of the white screen (step S3), and selecting the appropriate LUT data to set the display brightness of each gradation to the target brightness. It has adjustment and (step S6).

- the control unit 1G displays the white screen data on the image display unit 1D, the sensor 1H measures the brightness of the image display unit 1D, and the control unit 1G adjusts the brightness of the image display unit 1D (step S3).
- the brightness change of the image display unit 1D and the measurement of the sensor 1H are repeated until the brightness falls within the predetermined brightness range.
- the image data of a plurality of designated gradations stored in the storage unit 1E is displayed on the image display unit 1D, and the sensor 1H measures the brightness of the image display unit 1D (step S4).
- the measured brightness of the gradation that was not measured can be obtained by interpolation.
- the arithmetic processing unit 1A acquires the target brightness (step S5).
- the details of step S5 will be described in detail in "3-2 Target Luminance Calculation Flow”.
- the arithmetic processing unit 1A selects appropriate LUT data for achieving the target luminance based on the measured luminance acquired in step S4 and the target luminance acquired in step S5 (step S6).
- Step S11 The arithmetic processing unit 1A determines whether or not the minimum brightness Lmin is less than 0.05 (cd / m 2 ). If the minimum luminance Lmin is less than 0.05 (cd / m 2), the process proceeds to step S12, when the minimum luminance Lmin is 0.05 (cd / m 2) or more, proceeds to step S19 To do. In the transition from step S11 to step S12, since the minimum luminance Lmin is less than 0.05 (cd / m 2 ), the image display device 1 takes into account not only the first gradation characteristic but also the second gradation characteristic. It is necessary to display the image data.

- the extended JND difference calculation unit 10 substitutes the minimum luminance L 0 corresponding to the smallest extended JND index into the equation shown in FIG. 6B, and calculates the luminance L 1 corresponding to the next extended JND index (step S12).
- the minimum luminance L 0 is 0.00150 and the luminance L 1 is 0.00246.
- the extended JND difference calculation unit 10 determines whether or not the brightness L 1 corresponding to the next extended JND index is 0.05 (cd / m 2 ) or more (step S13). Since the brightness L 1 is not equal to or greater than 0.05 (cd / m 2 ), the calculation is repeated in step S12.
- Step S15 Luminance ⁇ JND value

- the maximum luminance Lmax is 1000 (cd / m 2 )
- the maximum JND value Jmax is 810.49
- the temporary minimum luminance Lmin_tmp is 0.05268 (cd / m 2 )
- the temporary minimum The JND value Jmin_tmp is 1.62.
