Definitions
- the present disclosure relates to an optical element and an optical device.
- Patent Document 1 and Patent Document 2 disclose electro-optical elements.
- the electro-optical device includes a substrate, a ferroelectric of KTN (KTa 1-x Nb x O 3) layer stacked on the substrate, a transparent electrode disposed on the front surface of KTN layer, disposed on the rear surface of the KTN layer Containing metal electrodes.
- KTN has four crystal structures depending on temperature, and is used as an electro-optical element when it has a perovskite crystal structure.
- An isotropic crystal belonging to a cubic point group m3m such as KTN is a ferroelectric crystal, but does not have a Pockels effect, a piezoelectric effect, or a reverse voltage effect. That is, even if an electric field is applied to such a crystal, the refractive index or crystal length of the crystal does not change in proportion to the electric field. Therefore, when such a crystal is applied to light modulation or light control, a Kerr effect is used in which the refractive index changes in proportion to the square of the applied electric field. For example, it is possible to control the retardation (phase difference) of light by applying an electric field so as to be orthogonal to the propagation direction of light. However, it is difficult to control the retardation of light by applying an electric field along the light propagation direction.
- An object of the embodiment is to provide an optical element capable of controlling the retardation of linearly polarized light components orthogonal to each other in input light by using an isotropic crystal belonging to a cubic point group m3m.
- optical element is an optical element that controls retardation of linearly polarized light components orthogonal to each other in input light, and has an input surface to which input light is input and a back surface that is a surface opposite to the input surface.
- electro-optic crystal that is an isotropic crystal belonging to the cubic point group m3m, a first electrode disposed on the input surface, and a second electrode disposed on the back surface, the input surface comprising:
- the first electrode and the second electrode are arranged along at least one of the axes obtained by rotating one of the three crystal axes of the electro-optic crystal about the crystal axis as a rotation center and the other two crystal axes by a predetermined angle.
- the direction of the electric field induced by the voltage applied between the two is along the propagation direction of the input light in the electro-optic crystal.
- the other two axes are rotated at an arbitrary angle around an arbitrary crystal axis. Since the input surface is along at least one of the other two axes, the input light is input in parallel or perpendicular to the other two axes. Thereby, the retardation of the linearly polarized light components orthogonal to each other of the input light can be controlled using the Kerr effect.
- the predetermined angle may be an angle between 40 degrees and 50 degrees, and in particular, the predetermined angle may be 45 degrees.
- the rotation angle of the crystal axis is in the vicinity of 45 degrees, which is 40 degrees to 50 degrees, the control can be performed efficiently.
- the electro-optic crystal is a KTa 1-x Nb x O 3 (0 ⁇ x ⁇ 1) crystal or a K 1-y Li y Ta 1-x Nb x O 3 (0 ⁇ x ⁇ 1, 0 ⁇ Y ⁇ 1) Crystal may be sufficient. According to this configuration, an electro-optic crystal having a high relative dielectric constant can be easily realized.
- the optical element is a wavelength plate, a light modulator, a spatial light modulator, a display element, or a compensation plate, further comprising a drive circuit that applies an electric field between the first electrode and the second electrode.
- a drive circuit that applies an electric field between the first electrode and the second electrode.
- the plurality of optical elements are arranged on an optical path of input light, and an electric field is generated between the first electrode and the second electrode for each of the plurality of optical elements.
- an optical filter having the same function as a LYOT filter can be easily configured.
- an optical element capable of controlling the retardation of linearly polarized light components orthogonal to each other of input light by using an isotropic crystal belonging to a cubic point group m3m.

- the electro-optic crystal 101 has an perovskite crystal structure and is an isotropic crystal belonging to a cubic point group m3m.
- the dielectric constant of the electro-optic crystal 101 is, for example, 100 or more, and can take a value of about 1000 to 20000 as an example.
- Examples of the electro-optic crystal 101 include a KTa 1-x Nb x O 3 (0 ⁇ x ⁇ 1) crystal (hereinafter referred to as “KTN crystal”), a K 1-y Li y Ta 1-x Nb x, and the like.
- a KTN crystal is used as the electro-optic crystal 101. Since the KTN crystal belongs to the cubic point group m3m, there is no Pockels effect and the input light is modulated by the Kerr effect. Therefore, retardation modulation can be performed by rotating the other two axes around an arbitrary crystal axis to an arbitrary angle other than 0 degrees and 90 degrees, that is, an angle larger than 0 degrees and smaller than 90 degrees. Note that phase modulation can be performed by inputting light parallel or perpendicular to the crystal axis of the electro-optic crystal 101 and applying an electric field in the same direction.

- new axes X1 ', X2', and X3 ' are obtained by rotating the axes X2 and X3 by 45 degrees about the crystal axis X1.
- the axis X1 ' is the same as the axis X1.
- an electric field is applied to the electro-optic crystal 1104 so that the application direction 1102 is parallel to the axis X3 'and perpendicular to the axis X2'.
- the propagation direction 1101 of the input light L1 is parallel to the application direction 1102 of the electric field.
- Kerr coefficients used for modulation of the input light L1 are g11, g12, and g44.
- the terms “rotation center”, “horizontal”, and “vertical” do not indicate only a strict positional relationship but may include manufacturing errors and the like.
- the electro-optic crystal 1104 used for retardation modulation is obtained by cutting out the electro-optic crystal 1103 grown on the axes X1, X2, and X3 along the axes X1, X2 ′, and X3 ′. Can do. Therefore, the temperature of the electro-optic crystal 101 can be controlled to around ⁇ 5 ° C. by a temperature control element such as a Peltier element.
