Definitions
- a beard may retain particles of food after the beard's owner has eaten; such food particles may have an odor of their own, and may further lead to the growth of odor-causing bacteria.
- Bearded smokers may find that their beards smell of smoke long after the smoke itself has dissipated. Dirt or other environmental particles may likewise accumulate in the beard. Perhaps the biggest contributing factor is that a beard may trap sweat and naturally-occurring oils produced by the skin.
- facial hair and scalp hair have significant chemical, morphological, and physical differences that cause shampoos to be suboptimal for deodorizing beards.
- facial hairs tend to be significantly larger (70-100% greater cross-sectional area) than scalp hairs, and to have irregular or highly eccentric elliptical cross-sections, whereas scalp hairs have more nearly circular cross- sections.
- Facial hairs also have many more cuticle layers than scalp hairs, making them significantly thicker and coarser, and swell more in the presence of water than do scalp hairs. Whereas hairs on the scalp are generally arranged in a relatively orderly way, beard hairs are often tangled or twisted to a very great extent. All of these differences make shampoos poor deodorizing agents for beards.
- compositions for beard care that are safe to the hair and skin of the user's face, preserve the hair's integrity and aesthetics, effectively penetrate a thick or tangled beard's layers, are adapted to the specific morphology and chemical makeup of facial hair, and eliminate unwanted odors rather than masking or adding to them.

- each of the expressions “at least one of A, B, and C,” “at least one of A, B, or C,” “one or more of A, B, and C,” “one or more of A, B, or C,” and "A, B, and/or C” means A alone, B alone, C alone, A and B together, A and C together, B and C together, or A, B, and C together.
- SME is also advantageous for use in deodorizing compositions in that it need only be present in a concentration of between about 0.2 wt% and about 2 wt% of the composition to provide a significant deodorizing effect.
- SME is a coadjuvant for a wide range of biocidal agents; as a result, SME can be combined with a biocide to form a deodorizing composition that functions both by fixing odor-causing compounds and by killing or inactivating odor-causing organisms, especially bacteria.
- SME is a clear, brown liquid under standard conditions and is effective to neutralize odors over a wide pH range, including at any pH between about pH 3 and about pH 11, which enables SME to be easily combined with other conventional deodorant ingredients to form deodorizing compositions that will be well-tolerated by a wide variety of users.
- beard care compositions of the present disclosure may comprise a number of other ingredients.
- beard care compositions according to embodiments of the present disclosure may comprise at least one surfactant, as well as water and a thickener.
- a surfactant may aid in cleaning a beard by surrounding and trapping odor-causing particles, which can then be rinsed away from the hair and/or skin.
- a surfactant can also increase the electrostatic repulsion between odor-causing particles and the user's hair or skin, and in general reduces the surface tension between other active ingredients of the composition and the user's hair or skin.
- Suitable surfactants include anionic, cationic, amphoteric, and nonionic or zwitterionic surfactants, each type of surfactant having various advantages and disadvantages.
- anionic surfactants are typically highly effective cleansers, but may leave the hair of a user's beard feeling rough or harsh, while nonionic surfactants may leave a desirable texture for the hair but be less effective deodorizers.
- multiple surfactants may be utilized in a particular composition to achieve the desirable effects of each.
- Anionic surfactants typically have good cleansing properties and are therefore commonly found in many shampoos and skin cleansers.
- Anionic surfactants include, but are not limited to, lauryl sulfates, such as sodium lauryl sulfate; laureth sulfates, such as sodium laureth sulfate; sarcosines, such as sodium lauroyl sarcosinate; and sulfosuccinates, such as sodium dioctyl sulfosuccinate.
- Cationic surfactants are normally incompatible with, and generally do not remove grease or similar odor-causing compounds as effectively as, anionic surfactants, but may preserve the softness and flexibility of hair more effectively than anionic surfactants.
- Amphoteric surfactants are a popular choice for many types of cleansing products because they are compatible with most other types of surfactant and are less likely to irritate the skin or other tissues of a user. Amphoteric surfactants also typically remove odor- causing particles from hair and skin more effectively than cationic surfactants, while preserving the desirable softness and flexibility effects of cationic surfactants. Consequently, amphoteric surfactants are frequently utilized in combination with anionic surfactants. Amphoteric surfactants include, but are not limited to, betaines, such as cocamidopropyl betaine; and alkylamino acids.
- Nonionic or zwitterionic surfactants are popular in shampoos and skin cleansers because they usually are not irritating to the skin of a user. Though they generally do not cleanse or deodorize to the same extent as, for example, an anionic surfactant, they are often utilized as co- surfactants or as solvents for otherwise insoluble additives.
- Nonionic and zwitterionic surfactants include, but are not limited to, poloxamers; amine oxides, such as cocamidopropyl amine oxide; and polyglucosides, such as lauryl glucoside.
- compositions according to the present disclosure over conventional shampoos is that shampoos must typically be formulated to have high lathering ability and thickness. This is necessitated partly by consumer preference; partly by the nature of scalp hair, which tends to have a smaller, smoother, and more symmetrical cross-section than facial hair and thus requires a composition with better "grip;” and partly by the fact that shampoo is, by its nature, washed away from the scalp during use.
- formulations according to the present disclosure may, but need not, have high lathering and thickness.
- formulations according to the present disclosure may be formulated as "leave-in" compositions (i.e.
- a thickener will generally be desirable, in particular to enable a user to easily hold a quantity of the composition in the hands prior to application to the beard.
- compositions that utilize anionic surfactants in particular sodium chloride may be used as a thickener.
- thickeners include, but are not limited to, gums, celluloses, and other polymers, such as polyvinyl alcohol and acrylate copolymers.
- a preservative may be useful to inhibit the growth of microorganisms in the formulation.
- Preservatives suitable for use in embodiments of the present disclosure include, but are not limited to, parabens; urea derivatives; isothiazolones, such as methylchloroisothiazolinone; and benzalkonium chloride.
- Opacifiers and pearlescent agents may be useful for providing an aesthetically pleasing to the composition before or after it is applied, or to the beard itself and/or the skin beneath.
- Opacifiers and pearlescent agents suitable for use in embodiments of the present disclosure include, but are not limited to, polyglycol esters, latex opacifiers, and pearlescent color additives.
- Conditioners are well-known and described in the prior art and widely available, but, although they may attempt to mask unwanted beard odors with fragrances, they typically do little to deodorize the beard, unlike beard care compositions according to the present disclosure.
- Conditioners may add a shiny appearance to beard hair, as may be desired by some beard owners.
- Conditioners suitable for use in embodiments of the present disclosure include, but are not limited to, humectants, such as glycerin; proteins; and silicones, such as dimethicone.
- a pH buffer may nonetheless be advantageous to make the use of the beard care composition more comfortable for the user.
- Most conventional shampoos and beard conditioning agents have a significantly alkaline pH, which can cause the hair cuticle to swell and thereby make shaving or trimming of the beard more difficult and uncomfortable, and can also degrade the hair or irritate the skin.
- a pH buffer can ameliorate this issue by ensuring a more neutral pH.
- Examples of pH buffers suitable for use in embodiments of the present disclosure include, but are not limited to, citric acid and glycolic acid.
- a chelating agent may be useful to prevent metal ions in hard tap water from binding to other ingredients in the beard care composition or to the hairs themselves, either of which would inhibit the deodorizing effectiveness of the composition and potentially dull or stiffen the hair.
- Chelating agents suitable for use in embodiments of the present disclosure include, but are not limited to, EDTA and its derivatives.
- Coloring ingredients may be desired to provide a desired color to the formulation.
- Perfumes may be included to give the beard a pleasant scent, in addition to the deodorizing effect of SME.
- Botanical extracts such as tea tree oil, or vitamins, such as vitamin B5 (panthenol), may be desired by some users for their perceived effects on the health of the beard hair.
- vitamins such as vitamin B5 (panthenol)
- compositions according to the present disclosure may, but need not, include one or more therapeutically-effective compounds, and in particular may include dermatological medicines for treating a condition of the skin underlying the beard.
- SME acts as a deodorizer by multiple mechanisms; that SME's antimicrobial and/or neutralization effect is only one such mechanism, others including complexing with and fixing odor-causing compounds; and that the antimicrobial and/or neutralization effect does not preclude practitioners of the present invention from including further biocidal compounds, the effectiveness of which SME may aid by acting as a coadjuvant.
- a 1.0% active solution of SME was prepared by adding 3.5 mL of test material to 96.5 mL of sterile deionized water. 0.1 mL of a standardized suspension of each test organism was inoculated into a separate 20.0 mL aliquot of SME solution.
