LCOS素子(3)と、ヒータ基板(2)と、これらの間に介在した樹脂層(4)と、を備えた光学装置(10)では、LCOS素子(3)の中央領域での樹脂層(4)の層厚が、LCOS素子(3)の周縁領域での樹脂層(4)の層厚よりも大きくなっている。

Description

光学装置及び光スイッチ
 本発明は、光学素子がヒータ基板に樹脂層を介在して固定される光学装置、及びこれを備えた光スイッチに関する。
 従来から、LCOS(Liquid Crystal On Silicon)素子やMEMS(Micro Electro Mechanical System)ミラー素子等の光学素子を用いた光スイッチが存在する(例えば、特許文献1及び2参照)。LCOS素子やMEMSミラー素子は、反射光の角度を制御する機能を有する空間光変調素子である。
 ここで、LCOS素子のスイッチング速度を速めるためには、LCOS素子を高温(常温よりも高い温度)で使用するのが望ましいことが知られている。このため、LCOS素子を備えた光スイッチにおいては、LCOS素子をヒータ基板に樹脂層を介在させて固定し、このヒータ基板を用いてLCOS素子を加熱する構成が採用されることがある。

 ところで、LCOS素子をヒータ基板に樹脂層を介在させて固定する場合、LCOS素子と対向するヒータ基板の表面(樹脂層との境界面)にうねり、異物、傷等による凹凸が存在すると、この凹凸に沿ってLCOS素子が歪んでしまうことがある。特に、LCOS素子の中央領域がヒータ基板の上記凹凸の影響を受けやすい。これについて説明する。
 LCOS素子は、膨張係数が異なる異種材料を積層することにより構成されているため、しばしば、入射面の中央が窪むように球面形状に湾曲している。そのため、図5に示すように、球面形状に湾曲したLCOS素子30を樹脂層40を介してヒータ基板20に固定した従来の光学装置100では、LCOS素子30の中央領域における樹脂層4の層厚が小さい(薄い)ため、LCOS素子30の中央領域がヒータ基板20の上記凹凸に沿って歪み易い。LCOS素子30のアクティブ領域(液晶層が形成された領域)は、通常、LCOS素子30の中央領域に配置される。このため、LCOS素子30の中央領域における歪みは、その光学性能の低下を帰結する。LCOS素子30の中央領域における歪みが大きい場合には、所望の角度に反射光を出射させる制御が行えなくなるといった事態も生じ得る。
 本発明は、上記課題に鑑みてなされたものであり、その目的は、ヒータ基板の表面に凹凸が存在しても、光学性能の大幅な低下を生じることのない光学装置を実現することにある。
 上記の課題を解決するために、本発明に係る光学装置は、光学素子と、当該光学素子を加熱するヒータ基板と、当該光学素子と当該ヒータ基板とに介在した樹脂層と、を備えた光学装置において、前記光学素子の中央領域での前記樹脂層の層厚は、前記光学素子の周縁領域での前記樹脂層の層厚よりも大きいことを特徴としている。
 本発明によると、ヒータ基板の表面に凹凸が存在しても、光学性能の大幅な低下を生じることのない光学装置を実現することができる。

 〔実施の形態〕
 本発明を実施するための形態について図を参照に以下に説明する。本実施の形態では、光学素子として、LCOS(Liquid Crystal On Silicon)素子3を備えた光学装置10について説明する。
 (光学装置の構成)
 図1の(a)は、本実施の形態の光学装置10を示す断面図である。光学装置10は、図1の(a)に示すように、LCOS素子3、ヒータ基板2、及びこれらの間に介在する樹脂層4を備える。
 LCOS素子3は、反射光の角度を制御する機能を有する空間光変調素子であり、液晶層3aを挟み込むようにシリコン層3bにガラス層3cを積層することにより構成されている。このように、LCOS素子3は、膨張係数の異なるシリコン層3bとガラス層3cとが積層された構成であるため、図1の(a)に示すように、入射面の中央が窪むように球面形状に湾曲し易い。
 シリコン層3bは、LCOS素子3を駆動するための駆動回路をシリコン基板に形成したものであり、液晶層3aとの境界面がミラー状に形成されている。液晶層3aは、LCOS素子3の受光部であり、液晶に加え、配向膜等を有している。LCOS素子3において液晶層3aが存在する領域がアクティブ領域として機能する。LCOS素子3は、液晶層3aに印加される電圧の変化に応じて、液晶の配向を変化させ、液晶層3aへ入射してきた光の反射角度を変更する。つまり、電圧を制御することで、反射角度を制御することができる。
 ヒータ基板2は、加熱(加温)装置であり、本実施形態では、セラミック材から成るヒータ基材に加熱回路(図示せず)および温度制御回路(図示せず)が設けられたセラミックヒータを用いる。ヒータ基材に用いられるセラミック材としては、例えば、アルミナ、窒化アルミ、窒化珪素、チタン酸バリウムが挙げられる。また、ヒータ基材として、例えば、銅、鉄、SUS、NCFを用いることもできる。
 LCOS素子3をヒータ基板2にて加熱して(例えば、60℃)使用することで、液晶の配向速度を、常温よりも速めることができる。よって、光学装置10を後述の様に光スイッチ として用いた場合に、スイッチング速度を速めることができる。
 図2の(a)は、ヒータ基板2の上面図、(b)はヒータ基板の断面図である。ヒータ基板2は、図2の(a)及び(b)示すように、LCOS素子3に対向する面に凹部24が形成されており、中央が窪んだすり鉢状に形成されている。
 LCOS素子3およびヒータ基板2は、例えば、ワイヤボンディングによって電極端子(図示せず)と接続し、外部との導通を取るが、公知技術を利用できるため、説明は省略する。
 樹脂層4は、LCOS素子3をヒータ基板2に固定するための層であり、樹脂から成る。樹脂層4に用いる樹脂としては、ヒータ基板2の熱をLCOS素子3に効率よく伝えるために、熱伝導性がよいものであって、かつ、ヒータ基板2の熱により劣化され難いものが好ましい。例えば、エポキシ樹脂、アクリル樹脂等が好適に用いられる。これらの樹脂は、熱硬化によってLCOS素子3をヒータ基板2に固定する。
 ここで、図1の(a)を見て分かるように、光学装置10では、LCOS素子3の中央領域での樹脂層4の層厚は、LCOS素子3の周縁領域での樹脂層4の層厚よりも大きくなっている。そのため、図3に示すように、ヒータ基板2の表面(樹脂層4との境界面)に、うねり、異物、傷等により凹凸が生じていたとしても、LCOS素子3の中央領域は、その影響を周縁領域よりも受けにくい。つまり、LCOS素子3の中央領域では、層厚が大きい(厚い)樹脂層4によりヒータ基板2の上記凹凸の影響が吸収されるため、この凹凸に沿ってLCOS素子3の中央領域が歪むことを抑制することができる。ここで、LCOS素子3の中央領域にはアクティブ領域が存在しているが、上記凹凸に沿った歪みは抑制されているので、光学性能の大幅な低下を回避することができる。
 さらに、LCOS素子3の周縁領域では樹脂層4の層厚が中央領域での樹脂層の層厚よりも小さくなっていることで、樹脂層4をLCOS素子3の全領域において厚くする場合よりも、LCOS素子3の機能性を向上させるためのヒータ熱をLCOS素子3に伝えやすい。すなわち、ヒータ基板2からLCOS素子3への熱供給を阻害することなく、光学性能の大幅な低下を回避することができる。
 ところで、ヒータ基板2のうねり、異物、傷等による凹凸は、多くは、10μm以上100μm以下である。そのため、その上に積層する樹脂層4の層厚が、10μm以上100μm以下であると、十分にヒータ基板の凹凸を吸収でき、光学素子の性能を保証することができる。
 さらに、本実施の形態では、樹脂層4の層厚は、LCOS素子3の周縁領域から中央領域まで連続的に大きくなっている。
 以上から分かるように、光学装置10では、LCOS素子3の中央領域に歪みが生じ難いので、光学性能の大幅な低下を回避することができる。よって、LCOS素子3の性能が保証された高品質の光学装置10を実現することができる。
 光学装置10は、例えば、図1の(b)に示すように、パッケージ(筐体)21に収容されて光スイッチ23として使用される。図1の(b)に例示するパッケージ21には、光学ガラスが嵌められた光学窓22が設けられており、この光学窓から光学装置10に対して光を入射させ、反射させる。このようなパッケージは、収容される光学装置の種類や用途に応じて、従来公知のものを用いることができる。そのため、説明は省略する。また、光スイッチ23の使用方法についても、従来公知の技術を利用できるため、説明を省略する。
 (光学装置の製造方法)
 まず、板状のセラミック材を、図2の(b)に示すように、周囲から中央に向かって窪むように、すなわち、すり鉢状になるように、切削加工しヒータ基材を形成する。このように形成されたヒータ基材に、加熱回路及び温度制御回路を配置し、ヒータ基板2を形成する。
 上記の様に形成したヒータ基板2上に樹脂を塗布し、その上にLCOS素子3を搭載して樹脂を熱硬化させる。熱により硬化された樹脂が樹脂層4として形成される。
 以下に、光学装置10の変形例について説明する。
 (変形例1)
 図4の(a)は、光学装置10の変形例である光学装置10の断面図である。光学装置10aは、図4の(a)に示すように、ヒータ基板2aの形状がヒータ基板2と異なっている。ヒータ基板2aの形状以外の構成は、光学装置10と同様である。
 ヒータ基板2aは、図4の(a)に示すように、樹脂層4との境界面において、中央領域が周縁領域よりも一段低く窪んだ形状である。言い換えれば、中央領域よりも周縁領域が一段高い形状、あるいは、周縁領域に枠部が形成された形状である。
 (変形例2)
 図4の(b)は、光学装置10の別の変形例である光学装置10bの断面図である。光学装置10bは、図4の(b)に示すように、ヒータ基板2bの形状がヒータ基板2と異なっている。ヒータ基板2bの形状以外の構成は、光学装置10と同様である。
 ヒータ基板2bは、図4の(b)に示すように、樹脂層4との境界面において、中央領域が周縁領域よりも1段低い形状であり、段差に傾斜が設けられている形状である。ヒータ基板2bは、段差は1段であるが、複数段であっても構わない。
 (変形例3)
 図4の(c)は、光学装置10のさらに別の変形例である光学装置10cの断面図である。光学装置10cは、図4の(c)に示すように、ヒータ基板2cの形状がヒータ基板2と異なっている。ヒータ基板2bの形状以外の構成は、光学装置10と同様である。
 ヒータ基板2cは、図4の(c)に示すように、樹脂層4との境界面において、樹脂層4との境界面において、周縁領域から中央領域まで段階的に窪んだ形状である。なお、段数の限定はない。ヒータ基板2cが周縁領域から中央領域まで段階的に窪んでいるため、樹脂層の層厚は、前記周縁領域から前記中央領域まで段階的に大きくなっている。
 これら変形例の光学装置10a,10b,10cにおいても、LCOS素子3の中央領域での樹脂層4の層厚が、周縁領域での樹脂層4の層厚よりも大きくなっている。そのため、ヒータ基板2a,2b,2cの表面に凹凸が存在しても、LCOS素子3の中央領域に歪みが生じ難いので、光学性能の大幅な低下を回避することができる。よって、LCOS素子3の性能が保証された高品質の光学装置10a,10b,10cを実現することができる。
 これら変形例の光学装置10a,10b,10cの製造方法では、板状のセラミック材の中央領域を切削加工してヒータ基材を形成しても、板状のセラミック材に枠状のセラミック材を積み上げる(変形例3では複数の異なる枠状セラミック材を積み上げる)成形加工にて、ヒータ基材を形成してもよい。なお、枠状のセラミック材は、円状でも多角形状であってもよい。変形性1及び2では、枠状のセラミック材が1つであるため加工し易い。
 上記した実施の形態及びその変形例では、光学素子としてLCOS素子を備えた光学装置について説明した。しかしながら、本発明に係る光学装置が備える光学素子は、これに限定されない。すなわち、本発明に係る光学装置が備える光学素子は、ヒータ基板と共に用いられる光学素子であればよく、例えば、MEMS(Micro Electro Mechanical System)ミラー素子であってもよい。
 (まとめ)
 本実施形態に係る光学装置は、光学素子と、当該光学素子を加熱するヒータ基板と、当該光学素子と当該ヒータ基板とに介在した樹脂層と、を備えた光学装置において、前記光学素子の中央領域での前記樹脂層の層厚は、前記光学素子の周縁領域での前記樹脂層の層厚よりも大きいことを特徴としている。
 上記構成によると、光学素子の中央領域での樹脂層の層厚が、光学素子の周縁領域での樹脂層の層厚よりも大きいため、光学素子と対向するヒータ基板の表面(樹脂層との境界面)に、うねり、異物、傷等により凹凸が生じていたとしても、光学素子の中央領域は、その影響を周縁領域よりも受けにくい。つまり、光学素子の中央領域では、層厚が大きい(厚い)樹脂層によりヒータ基板の上記凹凸の影響が吸収されるため、この凹凸に沿って光学素子の中央領域が歪むことを抑制することができる。
 ここで、大概の光学素子において、光学的な機能を担うアクティブ領域は、光学素子の周縁領域には存在せず、光学素子の中央領域に存在する。このため、光学素子の中央領域に生じた歪みは、光学性能の低下を帰結する。これに対して、本実施形態に係る光学装置では、光学素子の中央領域に歪みが生じ難いので、光学性能の大幅な低下を回避することができる。
 さらに、上記構成によると、光学素子の周縁領域では樹脂層の層厚が中央領域での樹脂層の層厚よりも小さくなっていることで、樹脂層を光学素子の全領域において厚くする場合よりも、ヒータ基板からの熱を光学素子に伝えやすい。すなわち、ヒータ基板から光学素子への熱供給を阻害することなく、光学性能の大幅な低下を回避することができる。
 また、本実施形態に係る光学装置は、上記構成に加え、前記ヒータ基板の前記光学素子に対向する面に形成された凹部により、前記光学素子の中央領域での前記樹脂層の層厚が、前記光学素子の周縁領域での前記樹脂層の層厚よりも大きくなっているのが好ましい。
 上記構成によると、ヒータ基板の光学素子に対向する面に凹部を形成するという容易な方法にて、光学素子の中央領域での樹脂層の層厚を、光学素子の周縁領域での樹脂層の層厚よりも大きくすることができる。
 また、本実施形態に係る光学装置では、上記構成に加え、前記中央領域での前記樹脂層の層厚は、10μm以上100μm以下であることが好ましい。
 ヒータ基板のうねり、異物、傷等による凹凸は、通常、10μm以上100μm以下である。そのため、その上に積層する樹脂層の層厚が10μm以上100μm以下であると、その樹脂層により十分にヒータ基板の凹凸を吸収できるので、光学素子の性能低下をより有効に回避することができる。
 また、本実施形態に係る光学装置では、上記構成に加え、前記光学素子は、前記中央領域にアクティブ領域が設けられていることが好ましい。
 上記構成によれば、光学素子のアクティブ領域に歪みが生じ難いので、光学素子の性能低下をより有効に回避することができる。
 また、本実施形態に係る光学装置では、上記構成に加え、前記光学素子は、異種材料を積層することにより構成された光学素子、例えば、LCOS素子であってもよい。
 異種材料が積層されたLCOS素子等の光学素子では、各層の膨張係数の違いにより湾曲することが多い。光学素子が湾曲すると、中央領域が周辺領域に比べてヒータ基板の表面に近づくため、光学素子の中央領域においてヒータ基板の凹凸に沿った歪みが生じやすくなる。これに対して、本実施形態に係る光学装置では、光学素子の中央領域での樹脂層の層厚が、周縁領域での樹脂層の層厚よりも大きいため、光学素子の中央領域においてヒータ基板の凹凸に沿った歪みが生じ難くなる。よって、上記構成によると、異種材料を積層することにより構成されたLCOS等の光学素子の性能低下を有効に回避することができる。
 また、本実施形態に係る光学装置では、上記構成に加え、前記樹脂層の層厚は、前記周縁領域から前記中央領域まで連続的に大きくなっていることが好ましい。
 また、本実施形態に係る光学装置では、前記樹脂層の層厚は、前記周縁領域から前記中央領域まで段階的に大きくなっていることが好ましい。
 また、本実施形態に係る光スイッチは、上記いずれかの光学装置を備えていることを特徴としている。
 上記構成によると、性能が保証された光スイッチを提供することが可能となる。

 本発明は上述した実施形態や各変形例に限定されるものではなく、請求項に示した範囲で種々の変更が可能であり、実施形態または実施例に開示された技術的手段を適宜組み合わせて得られる実施形態についても本発明の技術的範囲に含まれる。
 本発明は、例えば、LCOS素子やMEMSミラー素子といった光学素子が、ヒータ基板に樹脂層を介在して固定される光学装置、及びこれを備えた光スイッチに利用することができる。

Claims (9)

  1.  光学素子と、当該光学素子を加熱するヒータ基板と、当該光学素子と当該ヒータ基板とに介在した樹脂層と、を備えた光学装置において、
     前記光学素子の中央領域での前記樹脂層の層厚は、前記光学素子の周縁領域での前記樹脂層の層厚よりも大きいことを特徴とする光学装置。
  2.  前記ヒータ基板の前記光学素子に対向する面に形成された凹部により、前記光学素子の中央領域での前記樹脂層の層厚が、前記光学素子の周縁領域での前記樹脂層の層厚よりも大きくなっている、ことを特徴とする請求項1に記載の光学装置。
  3.  前記中央領域での前記樹脂層の層厚は、10μm以上100μm以下であることを特徴とする請求項1または2に記載の光学装置。
  4.  前記光学素子は、前記中央領域にアクティブ領域が設けられていることを特徴とする請求項1から3のいずれか1項に記載の光学装置。
  5.  前記光学素子は、異種材料を積層することにより構成された光学素子であることを特徴とする請求項1から4のいずれか1項に記載の光学装置。
  6.  前記光学素子は、LCOS素子であることを特徴とする請求項5に記載の光学装置。
  7.  前記樹脂層の層厚は、前記周縁領域から前記中央領域まで連続的に大きくなっていることを特徴とする請求項1から6のいずれか1項に記載の光学装置。
  8.  前記樹脂層の層厚は、前記周縁領域から前記中央領域まで段階的に大きくなっていることを特徴とする請求項1から6のいずれか1項に記載の光学装置。
  9.  請求項1から8のいずれか1項に記載の光学装置を備えたことを特徴とする光スイッチ。
