Abstract

본 발명은 이차전지용 음극활물질, 그리고 이를 포함하는 음극, 전극 조립체, 및 이차전지에 관한 것이다. 상기 음극활물질은 다면체(polyhedron) 형상의 결정질 탄소; 상기 결정질 탄소의 표면 상에 위치하며, 비정질 탄소 또는 산화된 결정질 탄소를 포함하는 제1표면처리층; 및 상기 제1표면처리층 상에 위치하며, 폴리아크릴산에스테르 공중합체의 제2표면처리층을 포함함으로써, 활물질간 면대면 접촉에 의한 전자 이동의 증가로 전지의 출력특성을 향상시킬 수 있고, 전해액과의 반응성이 제어되며, 전지의 고온저장 성능을 향상시킬 수 있다.

Description

이차 전지용 음극 활물질, 그리고 이를 포함하는 음극, 전극 조립체 및 이차전지
본 발명은 이차 전지용 음극활물질, 그리고 이를 포함하는 음극, 전극 조립체 및 이차전지에 관한 것으로서, 보다 상세하게는 활물질간 면대면 접촉에 의한 전자 이동의 증가로 전지의 출력특성을 향상시킬 수 있고, 전해액과의 반응성을 제어할 수 있으며, 또 전지의 고온저장 성능을 향상시킬 수 있는 이차 전지용 음극활물질, 그리고 이를 포함하는 음극, 전극 조립체 및 이차전지에 관한 것이다.
충전이 불가능한 일차전지와는 달리 충전 및 방전이 가능한 이차 전지는 디지털 카메라, 핸드폰, 노트북, 하이브리드 자동차 등 첨단 분야에서 적용하기 위하여 활발한 연구가 이루어지고 있다.
이러한, 이차 전지는 니켈-카드뮴 전지, 니켈-메탈 하이드라이드 전지, 니켈-수소 전지, 리튬 이차 전지 등으로 구분될 수 있다. 이 중에서, 리튬 이차 전지는 니켈-카드뮴 전지나 니켈-메탈 하이드라이드 전지에 비하여 작동 전압이 높고, 단위 중량당 에너지 밀도의 특성도 우수하여 휴대용 전자 기기 또는 고출력의 하이브리드 자동차에 주로 사용되고 있다.
한편, 일반적으로 리튬 이차전지는 양극, 음극 및 분리막을 구비한 전극 조립체, 전극 조립체로부터 연장되어 있는 전극 탭들 및 전극 탭들에 용접되어 있는 전극 리드 등의 구성을 포함한다.
이때, 상기 음극은 전류 집전체에 탄소계 음극 활물질을 코팅하여 형성되는 것이 일반적이다. 이때, 상기 음극 활물질로 종래에는 이론 한계 용량이 높은 천연 흑연 또는 인조 흑연 등의 결정질 탄소가 일반적으로 사용되었다.
그러나, 상기 천연 흑연 또는 인조 흑연 등은 수분 흡수력이 강하여 시간이 지나면 음극 활물질 슬러리의 점도를 상승시키고, 이를 이용하여 전극을 제조하는 경우 일정한 로딩 컨트롤(loading control)이 어려워 공정성이 현저히 저하되는 문제점이 있다.

본 발명의 목적은, 활물질간 면대면 접촉에 의한 전자 이동의 증가로 전지의 출력특성을 향상시킬 수 있고, 또 2층 구조의 표면처리층에 의해 전해액과의 반응성을 제어하는 동시에 전지의 고온저장 성능을 향상시킬 수 있는 이차 전지용 음극활물질 및 그 제조방법을 제공하는 것이다.
본 발명의 다른 목적은 상기 음극활물질을 포함하는 이차전지용 음극, 전극 조립체 및 이차전지를 제공하는 것이다.
본 발명의 일 실시예에 따르면, 다면체(polyhedron) 형상의 결정질 탄소; 상기 결정질 탄소의 표면 상에 위치하는 제1표면처리층; 및 상기 제1표면처리층 상에 위치하는 제2표면처리층을 포함하며, 상기 제1표면처리층은 비정질 탄소 또는 산화된 결정질 탄소를 포함하고, 상기 제2표면처리층은 폴리아크릴산 에스테르 공중합체를 포함하는 것인 이차전지용 음극활물질을 제공한다.
상기 이차전지용 음극활물질에 있어서, 상기 결정질 탄소는 천연흑연 및 인조흑연 중 어느 하나 또는 둘 모두를 포함하는 것일 수 있다.
또, 상기 비정질 탄소의 코팅층은 액상 또는 고상의 핏치에 의한 코팅층일 수 있다.
또, 상기 비정질 탄소는 상기 결정질 탄소 100 중량부에 대하여 0.01 중량부 내지 15 중량부로 포함될 수 있다.
또, 상기 산화된 결정질 탄소는 결정질 탄소의 결정구조의 층간에 산소 관능기가 도입된 것일 수 있으며, 상기 산소관능기는 SO3 2-, NO3 -, 카르복실기, 히드록시기 및 이들의 조합으로 이루어진 군에서 선택되는 어느 하나를 포함할 수 있다.
또, 상기 산화된 결정질 탄소는 상기 결정질 탄소 100 중량부에 대하여 0.1 중량부 내지 15 중량부로 포함될 수 있다.
또, 상기 폴리아크릴산 에스테르계 공중합체는 (메트)아크릴산 에스테르계 단량체와; 불포화카르복실산계 단량체, 비닐계 단량체, 니트릴계 단량체 및 이들의 혼합물로 이루어진 군에서 선택되는 단량체와의 공중합체일 수 있다.
또, 상기 폴리아크릴산에스테르계 공중합체는 결정질 탄소 100 중량부에 대해 0.1 내지 10중량부로 포함될 수 있다.
본 발명의 다른 일 실시예에 따르면, 결정질 탄소의 표면에 비정질 탄소 또는 산화된 결정질 탄소를 포함하는 제1표면처리층을 형성하는 단계; 및 상기 제1표면처리층 상에 폴리아크릴산에스테르 공중합체를 포함하는 제2표면처리층을 형성하는 단계를 포함하는 이차전지용 음극활물질의 제조방법을 제공한다.
상기 제조방법에 있어서, 상기 제1표면처리층의 형성은 상기 다면체 형상의 결정질 탄소를 핏치와 함께 혼합 후 소성로에 넣고, 300℃ 내지 1400℃의 온도 범위에서 소성하거나, 또는 상기 다면체 형상의 결정질 탄소를 산, 또는 산과 산화제의 혼합용액에 침지함으로써 실시될 수 있다.
또, 상기 제2표면처리층의 형성은 상기 제1표면처리층이 형성된 결정질 탄소를 폴리아크릴산에스테르계 공중합체를 포함하는 용액을 이용하여 표면처리하거나, 또는 상기 폴리아크릴산에스테르계 공중합체 형성용 단량체 함유 용액 중에 상기 결정질 탄소를 첨가한 후 결정질 탄소 표면에서 중합반응시킴으로써 실시될 수 있다.
본 발명의 또 다른 일 실시예에 따르면, 상기 음극활물질을 포함하는 이차전지용 음극을 제공한다.
본 발명의 또 다른 일 실시예에 따르면, 양극 및 음극이 분리막을 경계로 교대로 적층된 전극 조립체에 있어서, 상기 음극은 본 발명에 따른 상기 음극활물질을 포함하는 것인 전극 조립체를 제공한다.
본 발명의 또 다른 일 실시예에 따르면, 상기 전극 조립체를 포함하는 이차 전지를 제공한다.
본 발명에 따른 이차전지용 음극활물질은, 활물질간 면대면 접촉이 가능한 다면체 형상을 가짐으로써 전자의 이동이 증가되어 전지의 출력특성을 향상시킬 수 있다. 또, 표면에 2층 구조의 표면처리층을 포함함으로써 전해액과의 반응이 억제되고 동시에 전지의 고온 안정성을 향상시킬 수 있다.
도 1은 본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 음극활물질에서의 다면체 형상의 결정질 탄소의 구조를 개략적으로 나타낸 모식도이다.
도 2는 본 발명의 실시예 1 및 비교예 1에서 제조된 음극활물질을 포함하는 전지의 출력 특성을 나타내는 그래프이다.
도 3은 본 발명의 실시예 1 및 비교예 1에서 제조된 음극활물질을 포함하는 전지의 고온(60℃) 저장 특성을 나타내는 그래프이다.
이하, 본 발명이 속하는 기술 분야에서 통상의 지식을 가진 자가 용이하게 실시할 수 있도록 본 발명의 실시예에 대하여 상세히 설명한다. 그러나 본 발명은 여러 가지 상이한 형태로 구현될 수 있으며 여기에서 설명하는 실시예에 한정되지 않는다.
본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 이차 전지용 음극활물질은, 다면체(polyhedron) 형상의 결정질 탄소; 상기 결정질 탄소의 표면 상에 위치하는, 비정질 탄소 또는 산화된 결정질 탄소를 포함하는 제1표면처리층; 그리고 상기 제1표면처리층 상에 위치하며, 폴리아크릴산에스테르 공중합체를 포함하는 제2표면처리층을 포함한다.
상기 음극활물질에 있어서, 상기 결정질 탄소는 천연흑연 또는 인조흑연 등을 포함할 수 있으며, 이중에서도 우수한 전압 평탄성 및 이론 용량에 가까운 고용량 특성을 고려할 때 상기 결정질 탄소는 천연흑연일 수 있고, 또 높은 충방전 효율을 고려할 때 상기 결정질 탄소는 인조흑연일 수 있다.
상기 결정질 탄소는 흑연화 방법이나, 흑연 입자의 분쇄 또는 조립 처리 등의 방법에 의해 다면체 형상을 갖는 것일 수 있다. 구체적으로는 핵재(core)가 인조 흑연인 경우 흑연화 반응의 방법이나, 입자의 분쇄 등의 방법에 의해, 그리고 핵재가 천연 흑연인 경우 분쇄 또는 조립처리에 의해 다면체 형상을 가질 수 있다.
도 1은 본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 음극활물질에서의 다면체 형상의 결정질 탄소의 구조를 개략적으로 나타낸 모식도이다. 도 1은 본 발명을 설명하기 위한 일례일 뿐 본 발명이 이에 한정되는 것은 아니다.
도 1에 나타난 바와 같이, 결정질 탄소(1)가 다면체 형상을 가질 경우 활물질 입자간 면대면 접촉이 가능하다. 그 결과 점대점 접촉에 의해 전자 이동이 이루어지는 구형의 흑연 입자에 비해 더 많은 전자의 이동이 가능하기 때문에 전지의 출력특성을 크게 향상시킬 수 있다. 또 반복된 충방전에도 도전성을 유지할 수 있어 직류저항(Direct Current Resistance, DCR) 상승을 억제할 수 있다.
구체적으로, 상기 결정질 탄소는 5 내지 20 면체의 다면체 형상을 가질 수 있고, 7 내지 15 면체의 다면체 형상을 가질 수 있다. 다면체의 면수가 5개 미만일 경우 접촉면 수의 감소에 따른 전지의 출력특성 개선효과가 미미할 수 있고, 또 다면체의 면수가 20개를 초과할 경우 구형에 가까워지기 때문에 구형과 같은 점대점 접촉의 형성으로 전지의 출력특성 개선효과가 미미할 수 있다.
또한 상기 결정질 탄소는 다면체의 형상을 갖는 동시에, 입자의 평균입경(D50, 입경 분포의 50% 기준에서의 입경)이 5㎛ 내지 20㎛이고, 비표면적이 1㎡/g 내지 10㎡/g인 것일 수 있다. 상기 평균입경(D50)이 1㎛ 미만이면 비가역 용량이 증가하여 초기 전지 용량이 저하될 우려가 있고, 평균입경(D50)이 20㎛를 초과하면 팽창이 심해져서 충방전이 반복됨에 따라 입자간 결착성과 입자와 집전체와의 결착성이 저하되어 전지의 사이클 특성이 감소될 우려가 있다. 또, 상기 결정질 탄소의 비표면적이 0.1㎡/g 미만이면, 리튬이 전극 표면에 석출하기 쉽고, 그 결과 안정성이 저하될 우려가 있고, 비표면적이 100㎡/g을 초과하는 경우 넓은 비표면적으로 인하여 전해액과의 부반응을 제어하기 어려울 수 있다.
또, 상기 음극활물질에 있어서, 상기한 결정질 탄소의 표면에는 비정질 탄소 또는 산화된 결정질 탄소를 포함하는 제1표면처리층이 위치한다. 상기 제1표면처리층내 비정질탄소 및 산화된 결정질 탄소는 결정질 탄소와 전해액과의 반응을 제어하는 역할을 한다.
상기 제1표면처리층에 있어서, 비정질 탄소는 결정질 탄소에 대한 액상 또는 고상의 핏치 코팅에 의해 형성될 수 있으나. 이에 한정되는 것은 아니다. 구체적으로 상기 비정질 탄소는, 핏치와 결정질 탄소를 소성로에 넣고, 300℃ 내지 1400℃의 온도 범위에서 소성하는 방법으로 형성될 수 있다. 여기서, 상기 핏치는 석탄계 핏치 또는 석유계 핏치일 수 있으나, 이에 한정되는 것은 아니다.
또, 상기 비정질 탄소를 포함하는 제1표면처리층은 상기 결정질 탄소의 표면의 전면에 또는 부분적으로 형성될 수 있다. 구체적으로, 상기 음극활물질에 있어서, 상기 비정질 탄소의 함량은 결정질 탄소 100 중량부에 대해 0.01 내지 15중량부일 수 있다. 만약, 상기 비정질 탄소의 함량이 0.01중량부 미만인 경우에는 탄소의 경도가 낮아지며 전해액과의 부반응이 증가할 수 있고, 또 15중량부를 초과하면 상기 비정질 탄소를 포함하는 제1표면처리층의 두께가 지나치게 두꺼워 리튬 이온의 이동성이 장애가 되어 저항이 증가할 수 있고, 표면이 딱딱해져 전극 밀도를 높일 수 없다.
상기 제1표면처리층에 있어서, 상기 산화된 결정질 탄소는 결정질 탄소에 대한 산화(oxidation) 처리에 의해 형성될 수 있다.
구체적으로, 상기 산화된 결정질 탄소는 결정질 탄소를 황산 또는 질산 등과 같은 산(acid)을 사용하여 함침 등의 방법으로 처리함으로써 형성될 수 있다. 상기와 같은 산화처리에 의해 결정질 탄소의 결정구조의 층간에 산소 관능기, 예를 들면, SO3 2-, NO3 -, 카르복실기 또는 히드록시기 등이 도입되면서, 산화흑연(graphite oxide) 구조로의 상변이가 일어나게 된다. 이때, 산소 관능기의 도입률을 증가시키기 위하여 과산화수소, 과망간산칼륨, 크롬산, 중크롬산칼륨, 과옥소산 또는 과염소산과 같은 산화제가 선택적으로 더 사용될 수도 있고, 또 100 내지 300℃에서의 열처리가 추가로 실시될 수도 있다.
또, 상기 산화된 결정질 탄소를 포함하는 제1표면처리층은 상기 결정질 탄소의 표면의 전면에 또는 부분적으로 형성될 수 있다. 구체적으로, 상기 음극활물질에 있어서, 상기 산화된 결정질 탄소의 함량은 결정질 탄소 100 중량부에 대해 0.1 내지 15중량부일 수 있다. 만약, 상기 산화된 결정질 탄소의 함량이 0.1중량부 미만인 경우에는 전해액과의 부반응이 증가할 수 있고, 또 15중량부를 초과하면 리튬 이온의 이동성이 장애가 되어 저항이 증가할 우려가 있다.
또, 상기 음극에 있어서, 상기한 제1표면처리층 상에는 전지의 고온 안정성을 향상시키기 위한 제2표면처리층이 위치한다.
구체적으로, 상기 제2표면처리층은 폴리아크릴산에스테르계 공중합체를 포함하여 안정적인 표면 상태를 유지하여 전지의 고온 안정성을 향상시킬 수 있다.
상기 폴리아크릴산에스테르계 공중합체는 구체적으로 (메트)아크릴산 에스테르계 단량체와; 불포화카르복실산계 단량체, 비닐계 단량체, 니트릴계 단량체 및 이들의 혼합물로 이루어진 군에서 선택되는 단량체와의 공중합체일 수 있다.
상기 (메타)아크릴산 에스테르계 단량체는 구체적으로 메틸아크릴레이트, 에틸아크릴레이트, 프로필아크릴레이트, 이소프로필아크릴레이트, n-부틸아크릴레이트, 이소부틸아크릴레이트, n-아밀아크릴레이트, 이소아밀아크릴레이트, n-에틸헥실아크릴레이트, 2-에틸헥실아크릴레이트, 2-히드록시에틸아크릴레이트, 메틸메타크릴레이트, 에틸메타크릴레이트, 프로필메크릴레이트, 이소프로필메크릴레이트, n-부틸메타크릴레이트, 이소부틸메타크릴레이트, n-아밀메타크릴레이트, 이소아밀메타크릴레이트, n-헥실메타크릴레이트, n-에틸헥실 메타크릴레이트, 2-에틸헥실 메타크릴레이트, 히드록시에틸 메타크릴레이트, 또는 히드록시프로필 메타크릴레이트 등일 수 있으며, 이들 중 어느 하나 또는 둘 이상의 혼합물이 사용될 수 있다.
또, 상기 불포화 카르복실산계 단량체는 말레인산, 푸마르산, 메타크릴산, 아크릴산, 글루타콘산, 이티콘산, 테트라하이드로프탈산, 코로톤산, 이소크로톤산 또는 나딕산 등일 수 있으며, 이들 중 어느 하나 또는 둘 이상의 혼합물이 사용될 수 있다.
또, 상기 비닐계 단량체는 스티렌, α-메틸스티렌, β-메틸스티렌, p-t-부틸스티렌 또는 디비닐벤젠 등일 수 있으며, 이들 중 어느 하나 또는 둘 이상의 혼합물이 사용될 수 있다.
또, 상기 니트릴계 단량체는 숙시노니트릴, 세바코니트릴, 플루오르화니트릴, 염화니트릴, 아크릴로니트릴 또는 메타크릴로니트릴 등일 수 있으며, 이들 중 어느 하나 또는 둘 이상의 혼합물이 사용될 수 있다.
또, 상기 제2표면처리층은 상기 제1표면처리층이 형성된 결정질 탄소의 표면의 전면에 또는 부분적으로 형성될 수 있다. 구체적으로, 상기 음극활물질의 제2표면처리층에 있어서, 폴리아크릴산에스테르계 공중합체는 결정질 탄소 100 중량부에 대해 0.1 내지 10중량부로 포함될 수 있다. 만약, 상기 폴리아크릴산에스테르계 공중합체의 함량이 0.1중량부 미만인 경우에는 고온 안정성 개선 효과가 미미하고, 또 10중량부를 초과하면 리튬 이온의 이동성이 장애가 되어 저항이 증가할 우려가 있다.
상기와 같은 구조의 음극활물질은, 다면체 형상의 결정질 탄소에 대해 비결정질 탄소 또는 산화된 결정질 탄소를 포함하는 제1표면처리층을 형성하는 단계; 상기 제1표면처리층 상에 폴리아크릴산에스테르 공중합체를 포함하는 제2표면처리층을 형성하는 단계를 포함하는 제조방법에 의해 제조될 수 있다. 이에 따라 본 발명의 다른 일 실시예에 따르면 상기한 음극활물질의 제조방법이 제공된다.
상기 제조방법에 있어서, 다면체 형상의 결정질 탄소 및 비결정질 탄소 그리고 산화된 결정질 탄소는 앞서 설명한 바와 동일하다.
또, 상기 제조방법에 있어서, 제1표면처리층의 형성은 다면체 형상의 결정질 탄소를 핏치와 함께 혼합 후 소성로에 넣고, 300℃ 내지 1400℃의 온도 범위에서 소성하거나, 또는 결정질 탄소를 황산 또는 질산 등과 같은 산, 또는 산과 산화제의 혼합용액에 침지함으로써 실시될 수 있다. 이때 상기 핏치, 산 및 산화제는 앞서 설명한 바와 동일하다. 단, 상기 산화제는 산 100중량부에 대하여 30중량부 이하, 구체적으로 20 내지 30중량부로 사용될 수 있다. 또, 상기 산 또는 산과 산화제의 혼합용액에 침지 동안 또는 침지 이후에 100 내지 300℃에서의 가열 처리가 선택적으로 더 실시될 수도 있다.
다음으로, 상기 제조방법에 있어서, 제2표면처리층은 상기 단계에서 제1표면처리층이 형성된 결정질 탄소를 폴리아크릴산에스테르계 공중합체를 포함하는 용액을 이용하여 도포, 함침, 분무 등의 통상의 방법으로 표면처리하거나, 또는 상기 폴리아크릴산에스테르계 공중합체 형성용 단량체 함유 용액중에 상기 결정질 탄소를 첨가한 후 결정질 탄소 표면에서 중합반응을 실시함으로써 형성될 수도 있다. 이때 상기 폴리아크릴산에스테르계 공중합체 형성용 단량체는 (메트)아크릴산 에스테르계 단량체; 및 불포화카르복실산계 단량체, 비닐계 단량체, 니트릴계 단량체 및 이들의 혼합물로 이루어진 군에서 선택되는 단량체를 포함하며, 또, 상기 폴리아크릴산에스테르계 공중합체 형성용 단량체 함유 용액은 중합 반응을 위한 중합개시제를 더 포함할 수 있다.
상기와 같은 제조방법에 의해 제조된 음극활물질은 활물질간 면대면 접촉이 가능한 다면체 형상을 가짐으로써 전자의 이동이 증가되어 전지의 출력특성을 향상시킬 수 있고, 표면에 2층 구조의 표면처리층을 포함함으로써 전해액과의 반응이 억제되고 동시에 전지의 고온 안정성을 향상시킬 수 있다.
이에 따라, 본 발명의 다른 일 실시예에 따르면 상기한 음극활물질을 포함하는 음극이 제공된다.
구체적으로, 상기 음극은 집전체, 및 상기 집전체의 적어도 일면에 위치하는 음극 활물질층을 포함하고, 상기 음극 활물질층은 상기한 음극활물질을 포함한다.
상기 음극은 상기한 음극활물질을 사용하는 것을 제외하고는 당해 기술분야에 잘 알려진 방법을 이용하여 제조될 수 있으며, 구체적으로는 집전체의 적어도 일면에 상기한 음극활물질을 포함하는 음극 활물질 슬러리를 도포, 건조 및 압연하는 방법을 통해 형성될 수 있다.
상기 음극에 있어서, 집전체는 음극 집전체를 의미하는 것으로, 당해 기술분야에 잘 알려진 것을 제한 없이 이용할 수 있으며, 예를 들면, 구리 또는 니켈 등이 이용될 수 있다.
또, 상기 음극에 있어서, 음극활물질층은 상기한 음극활물질과 함께, 선택적으로 도전성 향상을 위한 도전재 및 음극의 팽창을 억제하기 위한 충진제 중 적어도 1종을 더 포함할 수도 있다.
이때, 상기 도전재는 구성된 전지 내에서 화학변화를 일으키지 않으면서 도전성을 가진 것이라면 특별히 한정되는 것은 아니다. 예를 들면, 덴카 블랙, 아세틸렌 블랙, 케첸 블랙, 파네스 블랙, 서멀 블랙 등의 카본 블랙; 천연 흑연, 인조 흑연 등을 사용할 수 있다. 특히, 카본 블랙, 흑연 분말, 탄소 섬유가 바람직하다.
또한, 상기 충진제는 구성된 전지 내에서 화학적 변화를 유발하지 않으면서 섬유상 재료라면 특별히 한정되지 않으며, 예를 들면, 폴리에틸렌, 폴리프로필렌 등의 올리핀계 중합체; 또는 유리섬유, 탄소섬유 등의 섬유상 물질일 수 있다.
본 발명의 또 다른 일 실시예에 따르면, 상기한 음극을 포함하는 전극 조립체가 제공된다.
구체적으로, 상기 전극 조립체는 양극 및 음극이 분리막을 경계로 교대로 적층된 것으로, 이때 상기 음극이 본 발명에 따른 이차전지용 음극인 것을 특징으로 한다.
상기 전극 조립체에 있어서, 상기 양극은 당해 기술분야에 잘 알려진 방법을 이용하여 제조될 수 있으며, 예를 들면, 양극 집전체 상에 양극 활물질을 도포한 후, 건조하는 방법으로 제조될 수 있다. 상기 양극 집전체로는 알루미늄 등이 사용될 수 있으며, 양극 활물질로는 리튬함유 전이금속 산화물이 사용될 수 있으나, 이에 한정되는 것은 아니다.
다음으로, 상기 분리막은 양극과 음극 사이에 개재되어 양극 및 음극 사이를 절연시키는 역할을 한다. 일반적으로 상기 분리막으로는 높은 이온 투과도와 기계적 강도를 가지는 절연성의 얇은 박막이 사용된다. 이때, 상기 분리막의 기공 직경은 예를 들면, 0.01㎛ 내지 10㎛일 수 있고, 두께는 5㎛ 내지 310㎛일 수 있다.
또한, 상기 분리막으로는 당해 기술 분야에서 일반적으로 사용하는 것을 제한 없이 사용할 수 있으며, 예를 들면, 내화학성 및 소수성의 폴리프로필렌 등의 올레핀계 폴리머 유리 섬유 또는 폴리에틸렌 등으로 만들어진 시트나 부직포, 크라프트지 등을 사용할 수 있다. 보다 구체적으로는, 고밀도 폴리에틸렌, 저밀도 폴리에틸렌, 선형저밀도 폴리에틸렌, 초고분자량 폴리에틸렌, 폴리프로필렌, 폴리에틸렌테레프탈레이트(polyethyleneterephthalate), 폴리부틸렌테레프탈레이트(polybutyleneterephthalate), 폴리에스테르(polyester), 폴리아세탈(polyacetal), 폴리아미드(polyamide), 폴리카보네이트(polycarbonate), 폴리이미드(polyimide), 폴리에테르에테르케톤(polyetheretherketone), 폴리에테르설폰(polyethersulfone), 폴리페닐렌옥사이드(polyphenyleneoxide), 폴리페닐렌설파이드로(polyphenylenesulfidro), 폴리에틸렌나프탈렌(polyethylenenaphthalene) 및 이들의 혼합체로 이루어진 그룹으로부터 선택된 1종 이상을 사용할 수 있으나, 이에 한정되는 것은 아니다.
한편, 본 발명에서, 상기 전극 조립체는 적어도 하나의 양극과 적어도 하나의 음극이 분리막을 경계로 교대로 적층된 것으로서, 스택형 또는 스택/폴딩형 구조로 이루어질 수 있으며, 특별히 한정되는 것은 아니다.
이하, 발명의 이해를 돕기 위하여 바람직한 실시예들을 제시한다. 그러나 하기의 실시예들은 발명을 예시하기 위한 것일 뿐, 발명을 이들만으로 한정하는 것은 아니다.
[ 제조예 : 음극활물질의 제조]
( 제조예 1)
인조흑연을 분쇄공정을 통해 다면체 형상을 갖도록 처리하였다. 결과로 수득된 인조흑연은 평균 입자직경(D50)이 16μm, 비표면적이 2.7m2/g인 10 면체의 형상을 가졌다. 결과의 다면체 형상의 인조흑연 100g을 핏치 5g 와 혼합한 후 소성로에 넣고, 800℃의 온도에서 소성하여, 인조흑연 표면에 핏치 코팅층을 형성하였다. 이때 핏치 코팅층내 핏치의 함량은 인조흑연 100중량부에 대하여 3중량부이었다.
다음으로, 핏치 코팅층이 형성된 인조흑연을, 메틸아크릴레이트, 스티렌, 메타크릴산 공중합체, 및 아조비스이소부티로니트릴과 혼합하여 혼합물을 제조하였다. 상기 혼합물을 증류수 1 리터에 인산나트륨 0.1몰 용액 510ml 와 염화칼슘 1몰 용액 75ml 를 첨가하여 준비한 수계 분산액에 투입하고, 균질기(homogenizer)를 이용하여 균질화한 후 교반하면서 70℃에서 하룻동안 반응시켰다. 반응이 완료된 후, 반응조의 pH를 1로 맞추고 반응물을 여과하고, 증류수로 세척하고 진공 오븐에서 건조하여 다면체 형상의 인조흑연 표면에 핏치의 제1표면처리층과 폴리아크릴산에스테르 공중합체의 제2표면처리층이 순차로 형성된 음극활물질을 수득하였다.
( 제조예 2)
인조흑연 1g을 25℃에서 황산(H2SO4, 98%)에 함침시킨 후, 과산화수소(H2O2, 35%를 첨가하여 황산과 과산화수소로 이루어진 혼합용액에 24 시간동안 함침시켰다. 결과의 인조흑연 분말을 분리하고, 증류수에서 3회 세척한 후, 80℃에서 24 시간 완전 건조하여 산화처리된 인조흑연 분말을 제조하였다.
핏치 코팅층이 형성된 인조흑연 대신에 상기에서 산화처리한 인조흑연을 사용하는 것을 제외하고는 상기 제조예 1에서와 동일한 방법으로 실시하여 음극활물질을 제조하였다.
[ 실시예 : 리튬 이차전지의 제조]
( 실시예 1 및 2)
상기 제조예 1 및 2에서 제조한 음극 활물질을 각각 사용하고, SBR 및 CMC와 98:1:1의 중량비로 혼합하여 음극 활물질 슬러리를 제조하였다. 제조한 음극 활물질 슬러리를 이용하여, 구리 집전체의 일면에 65 ㎛의 두께로 코팅하고, 건조 및 압연한 후 필요한 크기로 펀칭(punching)하여 음극을 제조하였다.
에틸렌 카보네이트(EC) 및 디에틸 카보네이트(DEC)를 30:70의 부피비로 혼합하고, 상기 비수전해액 용매에 LiPF6를 첨가하여 1M LiPF6 비수전해액을 제조하였다.
또한, 상대전극, 즉 양극으로 리튬 금속 호일(foil)을 사용하였으며, 양전극 사이에 폴리올레핀 분리막을 개재시킨 후, 상기 전해액을 주입하여 코인형의 리튬 이차전지를 제조하였다.
( 비교예 1)
상기 제조예 1에서 제조한 핏치 코팅층이 형성된 다면체 형상의 인조흑연을 음극활물질로서 사용하는 것을 제외하고는, 실시예 1과 동일한 방법으로 전지를 제조하였다.
( 비교예 2)
상기 제조예 1에서 다면체 형상의 인조흑연 대신에 구형의 인조흑연(평균 입자직경(D50)이 16μm, 비표면적이 2.7m2/g)을 사용하는 것을 제외하고는 상기 실시예 1과 동일한 방법으로 전지를 제조하였다.
[ 실험예 1: 출력특성 평가]
실시예 1 및 비교예 1의 리튬 이차 전지를 상온(25)에서 SOC(충전 심도) 별로 5C로 10초간 방전하여 발생하는 전압차로 저항을 계산하였다. 그 결과를 도 2에 나타내었다.
도 2를 참조하면, SOC가 90%인 경우에 있어서, 실시예 1의 리튬 이차 전지가 비교예 1의 리튬 이차 전지에 비하여 더 낮은 저항을 나타내었다. 마찬가지로, SOC가 80%, 70%, 60%, 50%, 40%, 30%, 20% 및 10%인 경우에 있어서도, SOC가 90%인 경우와 마찬가지의 결과를 얻을 수 있었다. 이 같은 결과로부터 실시예 1의 리튬 이차 전지가 비교예 1에 비해 보다 개선된 출력 특성을 가짐을 알 수 있다.
[ 실험예 2: 고온저장 특성 평가]
실시예 1 및 비교예 1의 리튬 이차 전지를 60에서 챔버에서 1주일간 저장 후, 정전압(CC/CV) 조건에서 4.2V/3mA까지 1C로 충전한 다음, 정전류(CC) 조건에서 2.5V까지 1C로 방전하고, 그 방전 용량을 측정하였다. 그 결과를 도 3에 나타내었다.
도 3을 참조하면, 본 발명의 실시예 1의 리튬 이차 전지는 저장 기간 1주까지 용량 보유율의 기울기가 비교예 1의 리튬 이차 전지에 비해 완만한 반면, 비교예 1의 리튬 이차 전지는 용량 보유율이 급격히 감소함을 알 수 있다.
이상에서 본 발명의 바람직한 실시예에 대하여 상세하게 설명하였지만 본 발명의 권리범위는 이에 한정되는 것은 아니고 다음의 청구범위에서 정의하고 있는 본 발명의 기본 개념을 이용한 당업자의 여러 변형 및 개량 형태 또한 본 발명의 권리범위에 속하는 것이다.
[부호의 설명]
1: 다면체 형상의 결정질 탄소
본 발명은 이차 전지용 음극활물질, 그리고 이를 포함하는 음극, 전극 조립체 및 이차전지에 관한 것으로서, 상기 음극활물질은 다면체(polyhedron) 형상의 결정질 탄소; 상기 결정질 탄소의 표면 상에 위치하며, 비정질 탄소 또는 산화된 결정질 탄소를 포함하는 제1표면처리층; 및 상기 제1표면처리층 상에 위치하며, 폴리아크릴산에스테르 공중합체의 제2표면처리층을 포함함으로써, 활물질간 면대면 접촉에 의한 전자 이동의 증가로 전지의 출력특성을 향상시킬 수 있고, 전해액과의 반응성이 제어되며, 전지의 고온저장 성능을 향상시킬 수 있다.

Claims (15)

  1. 다면체(polyhedron) 형상의 결정질 탄소; 및
    상기 결정질 탄소의 표면 상에 위치하는 제1표면처리층; 및
    상기 제1표면처리층 상에 위치하는 제2표면처리층을 포함하며,
    상기 제1표면처리층은 비정질 탄소 또는 산화된 결정질 탄소를 포함하고,
    상기 제2표면처리층은 폴리아크릴산 에스테르 공중합체를 포함하는 것인 이차전지용 음극활물질.
  2. 제1항에 있어서,
    상기 결정질 탄소는 천연흑연, 인조흑연 및 이들의 혼합물로 이루어진 군에서 선택되는 어느 하나를 포함하는 것인 이차전지용 음극활물질.
  3. 제1항에 있어서,
    상기 비정질 탄소의 코팅층은 액상 또는 고상의 핏치에 의한 코팅층인 이차전지용 음극활물질.
  4. 제1항에 있어서,
    상기 비정질 탄소는 상기 결정질 탄소 100 중량부에 대하여 0.01 중량부 내지 15 중량부로 포함되는 것인 이차전지용 음극활물질.
  5. 제1항에 있어서,
    상기 산화된 결정질 탄소는 결정질 탄소의 결정구조의 층간에 산소 관능기가 도입된 것인 이차전지용 음극활물질.
  6. 제5항에 있어서,
    상기 산소 관능기는 SO3 2-, NO3 -, 카르복실기, 히드록시기 및 이들의 조합으로 이루어진 군에서 선택되는 어느 하나를 포함하는 것인 이차전지용 음극활물질.
  7. 제1항에 있어서,
    상기 산화된 결정질 탄소는 상기 결정질 탄소 100 중량부에 대하여 0.1 중량부 내지 15 중량부로 포함되는 것인 이차전지용 음극활물질.
  8. 제1항에 있어서,
    상기 폴리아크릴산 에스테르계 공중합체는 (메트)아크릴산 에스테르계 단량체와; 불포화카르복실산계 단량체, 비닐계 단량체, 니트릴계 단량체 및 이들의 혼합물로 이루어진 군에서 선택되는 단량체와의 공중합체인 것인 이차전지용 음극활물질.
  9. 제1항에 있어서,
    상기 폴리아크릴산에스테르계 공중합체는 결정질 탄소 100 중량부에 대해 0.1 내지 10중량부로 포함되는 것인 이차전지용 음극활물질.
  10. 결정질 탄소의 표면에 비정질 탄소 또는 산화된 결정질 탄소를 포함하는 제1표면처리층을 형성하는 단계; 및
    상기 제1표면처리층 상에 폴리아크릴산에스테르 공중합체를 포함하는 제2표면처리층을 형성하는 단계
    를 포함하는 이차전지용 음극활물질의 제조방법.
  11. 제10항에 있어서,
    상기 제1표면처리층의 형성은 상기 다면체 형상의 결정질 탄소를 핏치와 함께 혼합 후 소성로에 넣고, 300℃ 내지 1400℃의 온도 범위에서 소성하거나, 또는 상기 다면체 형상의 결정질 탄소를 산, 또는 산과 산화제의 혼합용액에 침지함으로써 실시되는 것인 이차전지용 음극활물질의 제조방법.
  12. 제10항에 있어서,
    상기 제2표면처리층의 형성은 상기 제1표면처리층이 형성된 결정질 탄소를 폴리아크릴산에스테르계 공중합체를 포함하는 용액을 이용하여 표면처리하거나, 또는 상기 폴리아크릴산에스테르계 공중합체 형성용 단량체 함유 용액 중에 상기 결정질 탄소를 첨가한 후 결정질 탄소 표면에서 중합반응시킴으로써 실시되는 것인 이차전지용 음극활물질의 제조방법.
  13. 집전체;
    상기 집전체의 적어도 일면에 음극 활물질 슬러리를 포함하고,
    상기 음극 활물질 슬러리는 제1항에 따른 음극활물질을 포함하는 이차전지용 음극.
  14. 양극 및 음극이 분리막을 경계로 교대로 적층된 전극 조립체에 있어서, 상기 음극은 제13항에 따른 이차전지용 음극인 전극 조립체.
  15. 제14항에 따른 전극 조립체를 포함하는 이차전지.
