まず、ばら積み貨物の陸揚げの概要を図1に基づいて説明する。ばら積み貨物を積載した船舶301が接岸する岸壁には、ガントリークレーン101が設置されている。このガントリークレーン101のトロリ121には、ユニット化されたニューマチックアンローダ201が吊り下げられている。ニューマチックアンローダ201は、船舶301によって運搬される粒状物などのばら積み貨物を吸入管211により吸い上げて、ニューマチックアンローダ201から排出管221に排出するようになっている。

上記のようなニューマチックアンローダ201によって船舶301から吸い上げられたばら積み貨物は、サイロ等に貯留されたりトラックに積み込まれたりするようにしてもよいが、図3に示すようなコンテナ401に充填することによって、通常の貨物コンテナと同じように取り扱うことができる。
台車501は、図4に示すように、例えば上記のようなコンテナ401を複数載置可能な載置台502を備えている。載置台502の上面には、船舶やトレーラにおいてコンテナを固定するのと同様の例えばISO規格等に準拠した係合部503が設けられている。なお、さらに、コンテナを個縛するための部材等が設けられたりしてもよい。
上記のような台車501を積載して運搬するのに適した艀601には、図5~図7に示すように、船体上に甲板602が設けられている。この甲板602は、複数の油圧シリンダ603によって支持され、甲板602の高さを岸壁の高さに合わせるように制御し得るようになっている。これによって、岸壁との間で台車501を容易に移動させることができる。
