Definitions

  • the invention relates to a wheel bearing unit, in particular for motor vehicles.
  • Roll-riveted wheel bearing units have been used for passenger cars in the past in a wide variety. Especially for non-driven wheel bearing units, it is standard practice for use in conjunction with vehicle-mounted lids, which can take over a large part of the axial-side sealing function. Especially in connection with sensed wheel bearing units that can detect or measure wheel speeds, for example, these lid closures are beneficial. Through such cover closures, it is no longer necessary to provide another seal. Lids with employed sensors consist at least in the sensor area of a non-magnetic material, which is why stainless steel lid are often used.
  • a wheel bearing unit with a lid is known, in which the lid is pressed with a portion of the vehicle-side end of an outer ring. Between the outer ring and the lid, an elastic element is provided, which is completely pressed with the lid and completely elastically deformed.
  • EP 2 047 131 B1 discloses a wheel bearing unit which provides a cover for sealing the bearing. The lid is attached with a portion on an outer peripheral surface of an outer ring.

  • Such a structure enables a secure sealing of the wheel bearing unit and prevents the penetration of rainwater or dust from the outside into the bearing, as well as the leakage of grease, which is provided within the bearing.
  • Another advantage over the prior art is that is not pressed by the inventive attachment of the sealing element, when pressing the protective cover between the mounting portion and the outer ring, whereby the sealing element could be damaged. Overall, this leads to an improvement in the seal and to an increase in the service life.
