Definitions
- the present invention relates to a projector.
- a projector using a laser light source has advantages such as miniaturization of the apparatus, excellent color reproducibility, instant lighting, and a long light source life.
- the laser light emitted from the laser light source is generally coherent light. Therefore, in this type of projector, a speckle pattern called speckle noise generated by the interference of laser light may be visually recognized on the screen. Thereby, the display quality is greatly reduced.
- Non-Patent Document 1 describes a comment on the speckle phenomenon, a speckle removal method, and the like.
- the projection display device of Patent Document 1 includes a transparent plate having a plurality of fine wedge-shaped portions and a motor that rotates the transparent plate as pupil matching means. Since the pupil matching unit rotates and moves the exit pupil image of the illumination optical system, it is necessary to increase the aperture of the imaging lens and the projection lens arranged at the subsequent stage of the pupil matching unit. As a result, according to this projection type display device, the space for arranging the pupil matching means is necessary, the diameter of the imaging lens and the projection lens is increased, and the size of the device is increased. There's a problem.
- Non-Patent Document 1 describes a speckle prediction method. This prediction method is based on the premise that the pupil image has uniform illuminance. However, generally, the pupil image of the projector has an illuminance distribution. Therefore, in reality, the prediction method of Non-Patent Document 1 cannot be used.

- the green light incident on the cross dichroic prism passes through the mirror surface and is emitted as it is.
- the red light and blue light incident on the cross dichroic prism are selectively reflected by the mirror surface and emitted in the same direction as the emission direction of the green light. - the numerical aperture on the projection side when the light from the projection optical system 5 enters the screen 13 is NAp, and the observation side when the light is emitted from the screen 13 is shown.
- the numerical aperture is NAe
- the speckle contrast SC is expressed by equation (2).
- the speckle contrast SC is determined by the projection-side numerical aperture NAp.
- the projection-side numerical aperture NAp is obtained from the distance between the exit pupil of the projection optical system and the screen and the size of the exit pupil.
- the observation-side numerical aperture NAe is obtained from the distance between the observer and the screen and the size of the observer's pupil.
- the illuminance distribution of the pupil image at the exit pupil of the projection optical system is uniform within the range of the projection-side numerical aperture NAp.
- the actual exit pupil image of the projector has an illuminance distribution as shown in FIG. 4, and the illuminance is not uniform. Therefore, the speckle contrast SC cannot be accurately calculated without satisfying the premise of the expression (2).
- the present inventors have derived, through experiments, an expression for obtaining an index that can accurately evaluate speckle noise even if the exit pupil image has an illuminance distribution.
- the center of the exit pupil image Z is the origin of coordinates O, and the axes orthogonal to each other are the x-axis and the y-axis.
- the normalized illuminance at the point of coordinates (x, y) is denoted as P (x, y).
- the inventors decided to call the index represented by the formula (1) as EP (Effective Pupil).
- the normalized illuminance P (x, y) is obtained by the equation (3).
- P (x, y) illuminance (cd / m 2 ) / average illuminance (cd / m 2 ) of the top 0.1% of the illuminance distribution of the exit pupil image (3)
- EP can be calculated regardless of the brightness of the exit pupil image.
- the accuracy of the EP calculation result can be further increased by using the average illuminance of the upper 0.1% of the brightness of the exit pupil image. The reason is as follows.
- Speckle noise is the difference between high and low illuminance recognized as spots in the human eye. A portion with high illuminance generates bright interference spots, and a portion with low illuminance generates dark interference spots. What is easily recognized by humans is speckle noise that occurs due to interference by a portion with high illuminance. In other words, speckle noise is more affected by a portion with high illuminance than a portion with low illuminance.
- FIG. 5 shows a histogram of the illuminance distribution of the exit pupil image shown in FIG.
- the horizontal axis of the graph is illuminance, and the vertical axis is frequency.
- high illuminance components are distributed at the bottom of the right side of the graph.
- a standardized illuminance calculation method for example, it is conceivable to use the maximum illuminance value in the illuminance distribution as a reference.
- this calculation method does not correctly reflect the illuminance distribution in the high illuminance region in the EP calculation result. Therefore, the EP value optimized for the human eye cannot be calculated.
- the present inventors calculated the normalized illuminance based on the average illuminance of the top 0.1% of the brightness from the experimental results, thereby favorably reflecting the illuminance distribution in the high illuminance region. We found that a value was obtained.
- the inventors of the present invention by experiment, generated an exit pupil image generated when passing through one circular aperture and an exit pupil image generated when transmitting through a plurality of circular apertures. A correlation was obtained. The result is shown in FIG. The horizontal axis in FIG. 6 represents EP, and the vertical axis represents SC. Thus, it has been found that there is a correlation between SC and EP as indicated by a dashed curve even if the shape of the exit pupil image is different. That is, it was found that the SC can be predicted using the EP calculated using the equation (1).
- the present inventors performed a sensitivity evaluation of speckle noise by a plurality of subjects.
- speckle noise when the light diffusing element 10 is not rotated is compared with speckle noise when the light diffusing element 10 is rotated, thereby superimposing time of speckle noise.
- the effect was evaluated.
- the time superimposing effect of speckle noise is not included, and when the light diffusing element 10 is rotated, the time superimposing effect of speckle noise is included.
- the distance L between the exit pupil image of the projector 1 and the screen 13 was set to 2 m, and the distance between the subject M and the screen 13 was set to 2 m. These distances are set to 2 m because it is assumed that the projector 1 is used in a meeting or the like.
- the screen 13 a white mat screen was used.
- the intensity distribution of the exit pupil image was adjusted, for example, by changing the interval between a plurality of red laser beams emitted from the laser light source device LSR for red light. Similarly, the intensity distribution of the exit pupil image was adjusted for other color lights. Thus, the value of EP was adjusted by adjusting the intensity distribution of the exit pupil image.

- the area below the straight line indicated by the broken line corresponds to the areas of “ ⁇ ” and “ ⁇ ” in Tables 5 and 6.
- Table 7 summarizes the EP values at which the speckle noise is practically unnoticeable even if speckle noise is recognized by the human eye. More preferably, Table 8 summarizes the EP values at which the speckle noise cannot be substantially recognized by human eyes.
- the target value of EP differs depending on the color (wavelength range) of laser light is that the speckle size depends on the wavelength. The shorter the wavelength, the smaller the speckle size. When it is below a certain size, it becomes difficult for human eyes to recognize. In addition, since blue light has low sensitivity for human eyes, speckle noise is hardly recognized in blue light. Therefore, the target value of EP in blue light is smaller than the target value of EP in other colors.
- the EP target value is set for each color. If the difference between the wavelengths of the two light beams is large, it is recognized as a different color by the human eye, and speckle noise is recognized separately. This is because the effect of spatial superimposition cannot be obtained.
- speckle noise can be reduced by adjusting the illuminance distribution of the exit pupil image of the projection optical system 5, and a projector capable of reliably reducing speckle noise can be provided.
