Description
本発明は、冷却システム及び冷却方法に関し、特に、負荷が変動する複数の電子装置の排気熱を冷媒の循環により放熱する冷却システムに関する。
近年、インターネットサービスなどの拡大に伴い、情報処理を行うサーバやネットワーク機器を一箇所に集約したデータセンタの役割が大きくなっている。データセンタで扱う情報処理量の増大に伴い、データセンタの電力消費量も増大している。データセンタにおいては、電子機器装置を冷却するための空調機の消費電力が、データセンタ全体の消費電力の半分近くを占める。このため、データセンタにおいて、特に空調機の消費電力を低減する技術の向上が期待されている。
空調機の電力を低減する方法として、電子機器装置の排気熱を、直接屋外に輸送して外気に放熱する方法がある。排気熱を輸送する方式としては、冷水を循環する方式や、冷媒の相変化現象を利用する方式等がある。冷媒の相変化現象を利用する方式においては、冷媒の気化と凝縮のサイクルによって、冷媒が相変化する際の潜熱の移動を利用する。そのため、冷媒の相変化現象を利用する方式は、冷水を循環する方式と比べて熱移動量が大きいので、データセンタ等の冷却システムとして期待される。
このような相変化現象を用いた冷却システムの一例が特許文献1に記載されている。特許文献1に関連する電子機器の冷却システムの構成を示す概略図を図8に示す。図8に示した電子機器の冷却システム10は、複数の局所冷却ユニット22と、建屋上に設けた単体の冷媒凝縮器26を有する。局所冷却ユニット22はそれぞれ、建屋内の複数のサーバ14を収容する複数のサーバラック16に設けた蒸発器18及びファン20から成る。複数の蒸発器18は、冷媒凝縮器26と配管32,34によって分岐接続され、冷媒が自然循環する2次側冷却系28が形成される。
冷媒凝縮器26は、建屋上に設けられた冷凍機40と配管42,44によって連結され、冷媒を冷却する1次側冷却系が形成される。さらに、2次側冷却系28の配管32,34には、冷媒の供給流量を調整するためのバルブ54及びバルブの開度を制御する流量制御部56が設けられている。一方、1次側冷却系の配管42,44には、循環ポンプ46が設けられた構成としている。
冷却システム10においては、ファン20から送られる空気がサーバ14からの排熱によって加熱され、この加熱された熱風と蒸発器18を流れる冷媒が直接熱交換することでサーバ14を冷却する。そして、高熱により気化した冷媒が冷媒凝縮器26において1次側冷却系を流れる冷水と熱交換することにより、熱を建屋外へ排出する。このとき、サーバ14の処理負荷に応じて、2次側冷却系における冷媒の供給量をバルブ54によって制御し、ファン20の風量を調節する。これにより、冷却システム全体の消費エネルギーを制御することができる。
しかし、図8の冷却システム10において、複数の冷却対象のサーバ14の負荷がばらつく場合、冷却システム10の冷却性能が著しく低下する。これは以下の理由による。
冷媒が液体から気体へ相変化する時に、冷媒の体積が増大することによって冷媒循環系の内圧が増加し、それに応じて冷媒の沸点が上昇する。従って、冷却システム10に複数のサーバ14を接続する場合、高負荷のサーバ14からの発熱によって、冷媒の沸点が大きく上昇する。その結果、低負荷のサーバ14からの排熱の温度と冷媒の沸点との温度差が小さくなり、熱交換量が低下する。さらに、冷媒の沸点が排熱温度より高くなる場合、相変化が起こらず、冷却システム10の冷却性能が低下する。
これを避けるために、図8に示した電子機器の冷却システム10においては、冷却器の温度を温度センサ52を用いてモニタし、各サーバ14の処理負荷に応じてファン20の風量および冷媒の供給流量を制御する。この場合、冷却システム全体の構成が複雑になる。
本発明は上記の課題に鑑みてなされたものであり、複数の電子機器を冷媒の相変化により冷却する冷却システム及び冷却方法において、電子機器の負荷が不均一である場合でも冷却性能を維持できる、単純な構成の冷却システム及び冷却方法を提供することにある。
本発明の冷却システムは、第1の冷媒を貯蔵する複数の蒸発器と、複数の蒸発器の上方にそれぞれ配置される複数の熱交換器と、対応する蒸発器および熱交換器との間で第1の冷媒を循環させ、蒸発器毎に独立した第1の冷媒循環系を構成する複数の第1の配管と、複数の熱交換器において第1の冷媒を第2の冷媒を介して冷却する外部熱交換器と、外部熱交換器と複数の熱交換器との間で第2の冷媒を循環させ、第2の冷媒循環系を構成する第2の配管と、を備える。
本発明の冷却方法は、第1の冷媒を貯蔵する複数の蒸発器を用いて、複数の冷却対象から熱量を受熱して第1の冷媒を気化させ、複数の蒸発器の上方にそれぞれ配置された複数の熱交換器を用いて、気化した第1の冷媒から熱量を放熱させて第1の冷媒を凝縮液化させ、凝縮液化した第1の冷媒を複数の蒸発器にそれぞれ還流させ、複数の熱交換器において、第1の冷媒からそれぞれ放熱させた熱量を第2の冷媒に受熱させ、第2の冷媒を外部熱交換器に流動させ、外部熱交換器において第2の冷媒の熱量を放出させた後、第2の冷媒を熱交換器に還流させる冷却方法である。
上述した本発明の態様によれば、複数の電子機器を冷媒の相変化により冷却する冷却システム及び冷却方法において、簡単な構成で、電子機器の負荷が不均一である場合でも冷却性能を維持できる。
〔第1の実施形態〕
本発明の第1の実施形態に係る冷却システムの概略構成図を図1に示す。冷却システム100は、複数の蒸発器104、複数の熱交換器302、複数の熱交換器302において第2の冷媒を介して第1の冷媒を冷却する外部熱交換器303、複数の第1の配管200および第2の配管300を有する。
本発明の第1の実施形態に係る冷却システムの概略構成図を図1に示す。冷却システム100は、複数の蒸発器104、複数の熱交換器302、複数の熱交換器302において第2の冷媒を介して第1の冷媒を冷却する外部熱交換器303、複数の第1の配管200および第2の配管300を有する。
複数の蒸発器104はそれぞれ、第1の冷媒を貯蔵する。複数の熱交換器302はそれぞれ、対応する蒸発器104の上方に配置される。
複数の第1の配管200はそれぞれ、蒸発器104および熱交換器302毎に独立した第1の冷媒循環系を構成し、蒸発器104と対応する熱交換器302との間で第1の冷媒を循環させる。
第2の配管300は、外部熱交換器303および複数の熱交換器302と共に第2の冷媒循環系を構成し、外部熱交換器303と複数の熱交換器302との間で第2の冷媒を循環させる。
本実施形態による冷却システム100においては、冷却対象である電子機器装置102ごとに、それぞれ独立に第1の冷媒循環系が構成されている。そのため、電子機器装置102の負荷が不均一となっても冷媒の流量を調整することなく冷却性能を維持することができる。さらに、それぞれの熱交換器302を第2の冷媒循環系により冷却する構成としているので、冷却システム全体の構成を単純にできる。
本実施形態の冷却システムについて、さらに詳細に説明する。図2は、本実施形態に係る別の冷却システムの概略構成図である。図2に示すように、冷却システム110は、例えばサーバルーム101内に設置されたサーバやネットワーク機器等の複数の電子機器装置102を冷却する。電子機器装置102は、複数のラック103に搭載される。ラック103にはそれぞれ蒸発器104が設置される。
蒸発器104は、蒸気管201と液管202により、サーバルーム101の外において蒸発器104の上方に配置された熱交換器302と接続されている。これら蒸発器104と熱交換器302と配管(蒸気管201、液管202)とで第1の冷媒循環系を構成する。
蒸発器104内には第1の冷媒が注入されている。蒸発器104内は、第1の冷媒を注入後に真空引きすることにより、第1の冷媒の飽和蒸気圧に維持される。第1の冷媒としては、例えばハイドロフルオロカーボンやハイドロフルオロエーテルなどの、低沸点冷媒を用いることができる。
電子機器装置102は、データ処理などの負荷がかかると発熱し、ラック103内に熱を排出する。この排気熱はラック103に設置された蒸発器104へ伝わり、蒸発器104内の第1の冷媒は液体から気体に相変化する。気体となった第1の冷媒は浮力により蒸気管201を上昇し、熱交換器302に流入する。熱交換器302内で第1の冷媒は別の冷媒である第2の冷媒と熱交換を行うことで冷却されて凝縮し、液体となる。液体となった第1の冷媒は液管202を通って蒸発器104に還流する。このように、第1の冷媒は、気体時は浮力を、液体時は重力を利用することで、ポンプ等の駆動源を利用することなく循環する。
第1の冷媒循環系はラック103毎に独立した循環系を構成している。この場合、一部の電子機器装置102が高負荷となり、第1の冷媒の体積が増大することで第1の冷媒循環系の内圧が増加し、第1の冷媒の沸点が上昇した場合でも、その他のラック103を循環する第1の冷媒の沸点には影響を与えない。さらに、ラック103ごとに第1の冷媒循環系が構成されているので、それぞれの流路長を比較的短くできる。従って、流路抵抗による冷媒の沸点上昇の影響を小さくすることができる。
本実施形態に係る冷却システム110はさらに、サーバルーム101の外部に外部熱交換器303と、タンク304と、ポンプ301とを備える。冷却システム110においては、複数の熱交換器302が第2の配管300によって並列に接続されることにより、第2の冷媒循環系を構成する。ここで、並列とは、外部熱交換器303から流れる第2の冷媒が一旦分岐して複数の熱交換器302をそれぞれ通過した後、再び合流して外部熱交換器303に流入する構成である。
第2の冷媒としては、潜熱として第1の冷媒から熱を受熱し、第1の冷媒を凝縮させることができる冷媒が用いられる。例えば、第1の冷媒と同様に、ハイドロフルオロカーボンやハイドロフルオロエーテルなどの低沸点の冷媒を用いることができる。
第2の冷媒の液量は、使用する冷媒の潜熱に応じて、電子機器装置102の最大負荷時、つまり最大発熱時であっても、第2の冷媒循環系内の第2の冷媒が全て気化することなく、継続的に熱交換器302へ液相の第2の冷媒を供給し続けることができるように設定される。
第2の冷媒循環系は全ラック103に共通である。すなわち、外部熱交換器303と、タンク304と、ポンプ301をそれぞれ一個ずつ備えた構成であり、省スペースとすることができる。
図3に、本実施形態の冷却システム110で用いるタンク304の断面図を示す。図中の「Max」はタンク304内の第2の冷媒の液量が最も多い場合の冷媒高さである。図3に示すように、タンク304は、タンク304内の第2の冷媒の液量が最も多い時、つまり、全ての電子機器装置102が動作していない時でも、第2の冷媒の全量を収容できる容量を有する。
また、図中の「Min」はタンク304内の第2冷媒の液量が最も少ない場合の冷媒高さである。図3に示すように、タンク304は、タンク304内の第2の冷媒の液量が最も少ない時、つまり、全ての電子機器装置102が最大負荷で動作し、第2の冷媒が最も気化した時でも、タンク304下部に設ける配管に液相冷媒が浸るような寸法及び形状を有する。
このような構成とすることで、一部の第1の冷媒循環系が高負荷となり、対応する熱交換器302の内圧が上昇しても、タンク304がバッファとして機能する。従って、第2の冷媒循環系全体の内圧上昇を抑えることができる。
本発明の実施形態に係る冷却システムに用いられる熱交換器302の斜視図を図4Aに、断面図を図4Bに示す。
図4Aに示すように、第2の冷媒が流入する第2の冷媒流入口321は鉛直方向の下側、第2の冷媒が流出する第2の冷媒流出口322は鉛直方向の上側となるように接続される。また、第1の冷媒が流入する第1の冷媒流入口323は上側に、第1の冷媒が流出する第1の冷媒流出口324は下側となるように接続される。
このような構成とすることで、第1の冷媒は気体から液体に相変化した後、流路循環に重力を利用することができる。一方、第1の冷媒から熱量を受熱して液相から気相に相変化した第2の冷媒は、流路循環に浮力を利用することができる。
ここで、本実施形態に係る熱交換器302は、図4Bに実線矢印で示す第2の冷媒の流路411の断面積が、点線矢印で示す第1の冷媒の流路412の断面積よりも大きくなるように流路幅が設計された熱交換プレート325を備える。このような構成とすることにより、第2の冷媒が熱交換器302を通過する際の流路抵抗を減らすことができる。また、第2の冷媒が蒸気から気体に相変化した場合、体積の増加に伴う内圧の上昇を抑えることができる。これにより、第2の冷媒の沸点上昇が抑えられ、熱交換能力の低下を抑えることができる。
本実施形態に係る第2の冷媒循環系の接続構成の一例を示す断面図を図5に示す。図5に示すように、タンク304と外部熱交換器303を接続するタンク接続管312は、その内径を大きくした構成、あるいは、配管長を長くした構成を適用することができる。このような構成とすることにより、タンク接続管312の容積が増大して第2の冷媒の一部を収容することができ、タンク304の容積を減らすことができる。
以上のように構成された冷却システム110の動作を、図2を用いて詳細に説明する。図2において、第1の冷媒は、電子機器装置102の排気熱により、蒸発器104において液体から気体に相変化し、浮力によってサーバルーム101の外側上方に配置された熱交換器302に移動する。
熱交換器302において、第1の冷媒から第2の冷媒へ熱が伝えられる。ここで、熱交換器302における熱交換は潜熱による熱交換であり、熱交換によって第1の冷媒は凝縮する一方、第2の冷媒の一部が気化する。凝縮した第1の冷媒は液管202を通って下方の蒸発器104へ還流する。一方、第2の冷媒は蒸気流403として外部熱交換器303へ流入する。
そして、外部熱交換器303において、第2の冷媒の熱が外気へ放出される。これにより、第2の冷媒は凝縮し、液流401としてタンク304へ流入する。タンク304内に蓄えられた第2の冷媒は、ポンプ301によって各熱交換器302へ再び流出される。
以上のように、電子機器装置102からの排気熱が第1の冷媒および第2の冷媒の循環によって外部へ排出される。排気熱が除去されることによってサーバルーム101内の温度上昇が抑えられ、サーバルーム101を冷却する空調機の負荷を軽減することができる。
ここで、タンク304はポンプ301の吸入口311と接続されるが、ポンプ301の吸気口は負圧となるため、冷媒の沸点が下がり、気泡が発生する(キャビテーション)場合がある。従って、タンク304は、ポンプ吸入口311よりも上方に設けることが望ましい。これにより、気泡がポンプ301に混入して駆動力が低下することを防ぐことができる。
〔第2の実施形態〕
本発明の第2の実施形態について説明する。なお、この第2の実施形態について、第1の実施形態で説明した図2の冷却システム110と同一構成部分には同一符号を付し、その共通部分の重複説明は省略する。

本実施形態に係る冷却システム120の概略構成図を図7に示す。図7に示すように、冷却システム120においては、複数の熱交換器302が直列に接続され、ポンプ301によって第2の冷媒が循環する構成とした。ここで、直列とは、外部熱交換器303から流れる第2の冷媒が複数の熱交換器302の全てを通過した後に外部熱交換器303に流入する構成である。
第2の冷媒の液量は、電子機器装置102の最大発熱時であっても、第2の冷媒循環系内の第2の冷媒が全て気化してしまうことなく、継続的に熱交換器302へ液相の第2の冷媒を供給し続けることができる量に設定される。また、ポンプ301は第2の冷媒を供給するのに十分な駆動力を有する。このような構成により、第2の冷媒が途中の熱交換器302で全て気化するドライアウト現象の発生を避けることができる。
各熱交換器302では、冷媒の相変化時の潜熱による熱交換を行う。液流401の第2の冷媒は、熱交換器302を通過する際に一部が気化し、気相と液相が混在する気液二相流402の第2の冷媒になる。その後、熱交換器302を通過する毎に液相の一部が気化し、最終段の熱交換器302を通過した後にはその大部分が気化し、蒸気流403の第2の冷媒となって外部熱交換器303に流入する。熱交換器302における熱交換は、潜熱による熱交換であるので、下流側で液相の第2の冷媒の温度が上昇した場合であっても、熱交換能力が維持される。
このような構成とすることで、ポンプ301から供給される第2の冷媒の流量を少なくできるため、ポンプ301の駆動電力を抑制することができる。
さらに、各第1の冷媒循環系の負荷の総和をセンシングし、ポンプ301の駆動力が各第1の冷媒循環系の負荷の総和に応じた液量を供給するように制御することとしてもよい。これにより、第2の冷媒の流量を最適化することができ、消費電力のさらなる削減が可能となる。
本願発明は上記実施形態に限定されるものではなく、この発明の要旨を逸脱しない範囲の設計の変更等があってもこの発明に含まれる。また、上記の実施形態の一部又は全部は、以下の付記のようにも記載されうるが、以下には限られない。
(付記1)第1の冷媒を貯蔵する複数の蒸発器と、前記第1の蒸発器の鉛直上方にそれぞれ配置される複数の熱交換器と、前記蒸発器と対応する前記熱交換器との間で前記第1の冷媒が循環し、前記蒸発器毎に独立した第1の冷媒循環系を構成する複数の第1の配管と前記熱交換器を第2の冷媒を介して冷却する外部熱交換器と、前記外部熱交換器と前記複数の熱交換器とを接続し、前記第2の冷媒が循環する第2の冷媒循環系を構成する第2の配管とを有する冷却システム。
(付記2)前記第1の配管は、前記蒸発器で気化した気相状態の第1の冷媒を前記熱交換器に流動させる気相管と、前記熱交換器で凝縮液化した液相状態の第1の冷媒を流動させる液管を含む付記1に記載した冷却システム。
(付記3)前記第2の冷媒循環系は、前記複数の熱交換器が前記外部交換器に対して並列に接続された構成である付記1または2に記載した冷却システム。
(付記4)前記第2の冷媒循環系は、前記複数の熱交換器が前記外部交換器に対して直列に接続された構成である付記1または2に記載した冷却システム。
(付記5)前記第2の冷媒循環系の経路内であって、前記外部熱交換器と前記熱交換器の間に、前記第2の冷媒を貯蔵するタンクと、前記第2の冷媒を循環させるポンプとをさらに有する付記1から4のいずれか一項に記載の冷却システム。
(付記6)冷却対象である複数の電子機器の負荷の総和を計測するセンシング部と、前記ポンプの駆動力を前記負荷の総和に応じて制御する制御部をさらに有する付記5に記載の冷却システム。
(付記7)前記第2の配管が、前記第2の冷媒が滞留する断面積が増大した領域を含む構成である付記5または6に記載の冷却システム。

(付記9)第1の冷媒を貯蔵する複数の蒸発器を用いて、複数の冷却対象から熱量を受熱して前記第1の冷媒を気化させ、前記気化した第1の冷媒を複数の熱交換器を用いてそれぞれ凝縮液化させることによって前記熱量を放熱させ、前記凝縮液化した前記第1の冷媒を前記複数の蒸発器にそれぞれ還流させ、前記複数の熱交換器において前記第1の冷媒がそれぞれ放熱した前記熱量を、第2の冷媒にそれぞれ受熱させ、前記第2の冷媒を外部熱交換器に流動させ、前記外部熱交換器において前記第2の冷媒の熱量を放出させた後、前記第2の冷媒を前記熱交換器に還流させる冷却方法。

Claims (10)
- 第1の冷媒を貯蔵する複数の蒸発器と、
前記複数の蒸発器の上方にそれぞれ配置される複数の熱交換器と、
対応する前記蒸発器および前記熱交換器との間で前記第1の冷媒を循環させ、前記蒸発器毎に独立した第1の冷媒循環系を構成する複数の第1の配管と、
前記複数の熱交換器において前記第1の冷媒を第2の冷媒を介して冷却する外部熱交換器と、
前記外部熱交換器と前記複数の熱交換器との間で前記第2の冷媒を循環させ、第2の冷媒循環系を構成する第2の配管と、
を備える冷却システム。 - 前記第1の配管は、前記蒸発器で気化された気相状態の第1の冷媒を前記熱交換器に流動させる気相管と、前記熱交換器で凝縮液化された液相状態の第1の冷媒を流動させる液管を含む請求項1に記載した冷却システム。
- 前記第2の冷媒循環系は、前記複数の熱交換器が前記外部交換器に対して並列に接続された構成である請求項1または2に記載した冷却システム。
- 前記第2の冷媒循環系は、前記複数の熱交換器が前記外部交換器に対して直列に接続された構成である請求項1または2に記載した冷却システム。
- 前記第2の配管に接続され、前記第2の冷媒を貯蔵するタンクと、前記第2の配管に接続され、前記第2の冷媒を循環させるポンプとをさらに備える請求項1から4のいずれか1項に記載の冷却システム。
- 冷却対象である複数の電子機器の負荷の総和を計測するセンシング部と、前記ポンプの駆動力を前記負荷の総和に応じて制御する制御部とをさらに備える請求項5に記載の冷却システム。
- 前記外部熱交換器は、前記第1の冷媒の流路および前記第1の冷媒の流路の断面積よりも大きな断面積を有する前記第2の冷媒の流路を備える熱交換プレートを含む、請求項1から6のいずれか1項に記載の冷却システム。
- 第1の冷媒を貯蔵する複数の蒸発器を用いて、複数の冷却対象から熱量を受熱して前記第1の冷媒を気化させ、
前記複数の蒸発器の上方にそれぞれ配置された複数の熱交換器を用いて、前記気化した第1の冷媒から前記熱量を放熱させて前記第1の冷媒を凝縮液化させ、
前記凝縮液化した第1の冷媒を前記複数の蒸発器にそれぞれ還流させ、
前記複数の熱交換器において、前記第1の冷媒からそれぞれ放熱させた熱量を第2の冷媒に受熱させ、
前記第2の冷媒を外部熱交換器に流動させ、
前記外部熱交換器において前記第2の冷媒の熱量を放出させた後、前記第2の冷媒を前記熱交換器に還流させる、
