 本発明は、液晶表示装置等の各種の表示装置におけるバックライトの輝度を検出する表示装置および表示装置のバックライト光の検出方法に関する。
 液晶表示装置においてはその表示画面の背面にバックライトを配置してその光によって表示画面を照射し文字や映像などを表示するようになっている。このような表示装置において光源からの光は経年劣化し、光の強度が低下する。そのため、光源から表示画面に照射する光を光センサで検出し、その検出光に応じて光源の光強度を制御することによって適正な表示状態や光照射状態を維持する技術が知られている。
例えば下記特許文献1に記載された液晶表示装置の光検出器は、光検出器のユニットを液晶表示装置の背面側の反射シートの中央に密着させて設置し、反射シートから漏れた光を検出している。そして、光検出器で検出された輝度に対して予め設定された輝度で表示画面を観察できるように光源の発光量を制御する機構が開示されている。この光検出器は、液晶パネル、導光板、反射シートなどが一体化して販売されることが多い液晶表示装置において、取り付けが容易であって取り付けコストも低廉とされている。
ところで、特許文献1に記載されたタイプの液晶表示装置においては液晶パネル、導光板、反射シートなどがシャーシの中に格納されて販売されることが多いが、特許文献1には、シャーシに格納されていないタイプの液晶表示装置に光検出器のユニットを取り付ける構成が記載されている。特許文献1に記載された光検出器をシャーシ付きの液晶表示装置に適用しようとするとシャーシの中央に開口部を形成し、この開口部に光検出器のユニットを取り付けることになる。すると、開口部から光が漏れるため、ユーザが前面から表示画面を見た場合に開口部の辺りが影として見えるという問題があった。そこで、導光板の端部の位置におけるシャーシに開口部を設ければ表示画面に影が映らず、表示品質を損ねないように光を表示画面に投影することができる。

しかしながら、表示装置には、回転可能なコンピュータ向けの液晶モニタやデジタルサイネージ向けディスプレイなど表示画面を横長の状態(ランドスケープ)や縦長の状態(ポートレート)に切り替えて用いるものがある。図6A,6Bはその一例を示すものであり、液晶表示装置100の回転における導光板101と開口部102の相対位置の関係を示している。そして、導光板101の端部における開口部102に対向する位置に光検出器を設けている。
このような液晶表示装置100において、導光板101はアクリル板で形成されているために熱膨張したり水を吸収して膨張したりするため微小移動することが許容されている。そのため、図6Aに示すように、液晶表示装置100の回転に伴い導光板101がその重力方向に微小距離、例えば数mm程度動き、図6Bに示すように開口部102と導光板101との相対位置が変動する。これにより開口部102に設けた光検出器で検出する光の強度にも変化が生じる。
具体的には、導光板101の端部には反射シートが設けられており反射率が高い。そのため液晶表示装置100を横長から縦長に切り替えた場合、図6Bの上側の開口部に対応する光検出器は導光板101の端部に設けた反射シートの反射光を検出するために、横長の状態にあるときよりも強い光を検出してしまう欠点がある。
一方、導光板101の端部に設けられた開口部102ではこのような現象が生じるが、映像などが表示されている画面の大部分においては、液晶表示装置100を横長から縦長に切り替えても輝度などは変わらず同じ表示状態にある。しかし、横長と縦長への切り換えや反射シートの反射光の受光により、光検出器が検出する光の強度が増減することで、画面の明るさなどを制御する機能が働き表示状態が安定しないという問題が生じる。
また、液晶表示装置100を例えば横長と縦長との間で切り換えた場合、開口部102が円形であると、光センサの受光部にマトリクス状に配列したRGBの各単位カラーセンサに対する光の照射位置がずれると各単位カラーセンサの受光比率が変化してしまい、同様に光の検出器で検出する光強度が増減するという問題がある。
そこで、本発明は、上述した課題に鑑み、導光板が移動しても光センサで検出する光の強度が変動しないようにした表示装置と表示装置のバックライト光検出方法を提供することを目的としている。
本発明による表示装置は、導光板の一の端部に対向する光源からの光を導光板内に導いて液晶パネル部に照射させる表示装置であって、導光板と光源とを覆うシャーシと、液晶パネル部の端部にあってシャーシに形成した光透過用開口部と、導光板から出射される光を光透過用開口部を介して検出する光センサと、を備え、光透過用開口部は矩形であることを特徴とする。
本発明による表示装置のバックライト光検出方法は、導光板の一の端部に対向する光源からの光を導光板内に導いて液晶パネル部に照射させる表示装置のバックライト光検出方法において、液晶パネル部の端部における導光板と光源を覆うシャーシに矩形の光透過用開口部を設け、導光板で反射した光を、光透過用開口部を通して光センサで受光させて受光量を検出するようにしたことを特徴とする。
 本発明に係る表示装置及び表示装置のバックライト光検出方法によれば、表示画面の向きを横長と縦長との間で切り替えて用いても光透過用開口部が矩形であるため光センサで検出する光強度を安定して維持することができるという効果を奏する。

 以下、本発明の実施形態による液晶表示装置の光検出器を図1~図5を参照して説明する。
図1及び図2に示す本発明の実施形態による液晶表示装置1は、表示画面として液晶パネル2とその背面に設けた導光板3とを備えている。液晶パネル2と導光板3は例えば長方形状等の矩形板状であり、ユーザ(観者)は、図6A,Bに示すように、液晶パネル2を横長(ランドスケープ)に配置し、又は縦長(ポートレート)に切り替えて配置して観察することができる。なお、図1及び図2では液晶パネル2は横長(ランドスケープ)に設定されているものとする。
図1及び図2において、導光板3の例えば長辺からなる底部の端面には端面の長手方向に沿って光源4が備えられている。光源4には例えばLEDが用いられる。導光板3を構成する四辺の各端面のうち、光源4が配置された底部端面に隣接する一方または両方の短辺からなる側端面には端部反射シート6(第1の光学部材)が貼り付けられている。そして、導光板3の背面側にはLCDパネル金属フレームとして例えばアルミニウム合金からなるシャーシ7が配設され、このシャーシ7上の導光板3の背面に対向する面には裏面反射シート8(第2の光学部材)が取り付けられている。裏面反射シート8は導光板3の背面と離間しているが接触していてもよく、或いは導光板3の背面に取り付けられていてもよい。そして、シャーシ7によって導光板3と光源4が覆われている。
そして、光源4から射出された光は底部の端面から導光板3の内部に進入させられ、導光板3内に進入する光の一部は端部反射シート6で反射し、また他の一部は導光板3の背面から射出して裏面反射シート8で反射して導光板3に再度進入して前面から射出される。こうして、導光板3内の光は前面から射出して、拡散板9と光学シートで拡散及び集光されて液晶パネル2の前面全体を透過して液晶パネル2を発光させる。
シャーシ7には導光板3の側端部に対向する位置に検出用の光を通す開口部11が形成されている。導光板3で反射して開口部11を通して後方に走行する光の範囲を規制するための遮光板12が開口部11の一部を覆って取り付けられている。そのため、液晶表示装置1を横長と縦長との間で切り換えた際に導光板3の端部がずれたとしても端部反射シート6での反射光は遮光板12で遮蔽され、後述する光センサ22の受光部23に到達しない。ここで、シャーシ7の開口部11と遮光板12とで形成する光の通路の範囲をパネル開口部13(光透過用開口部)というものとする。開口部11とパネル開口部13は矩形、例えば長方形に形成されている。開口部11に対して遮光板12の一辺は開口部11の長辺に略平行に設定する。開口部11と遮光板12とで形成するパネル開口部13の光透過範囲は後述する内側光L1を含む内側平面と外側光L2を含む外側平面との範囲を規定するように設定される。開口部11は短辺と長辺が例えば2.5mm×5mmに形成されている。
液晶表示装置1において、液晶パネル2から導光板3を介してシャーシ7までの部分を液晶モジュール15という。
そして、液晶モジュール15の後端側には、開口部11を覆う光検出器16がシャーシ7に取り付けられている。
光検出器16において、シャーシ7の裏面には例えばスポンジ状部材からなる筒状のカバー部材18が配設されている。カバー部材18の内部にごみ等が侵入すると受光量が変動するので隙間を形成しないように伸縮可能なスポンジ状部材を用いた。カバー部材18の後端にはプラスチック等からなる板状のホルダ19を介して略筒状の光センサホルダ20が設けられ、その一側部には支持部材20aが取り付けられている。光センサホルダ20の後端部には光センサ基板21が取り付けられ、この光センサ基板21の内面には光センサ22が固定されている。図3において、光センサ22にはR、G、Bの各単色からなる3種類の単色カラーセンサがマトリクス状に配列された四角形状の受光部23が配列されている。この受光部23は光センサ22の中央線P´に対して内側、即ち例えば四角形板状をなす液晶パネル2の中心線Oに近い側に配設されている。
光検出器16において、ホルダ19にはシャーシ7のパネル開口部13を通過した光を通過させるためのパネル開口部13より拡径された光センサホルダ開口部25が形成されている。また、受光部23の中点を通る法線Pは、シャーシ7に形成した開口部11の長片の壁面11aが接している。なお、図2において、法線Pに対して液晶パネル2の内側方向をA方向とし、外側方向をB方向とする。また、開口部11の壁面11aは法線Pに重なる位置になくてもよい。
ここで、光源4から射出して導光板3内に進入した光の一部が導光板3の一側面である端部反射シート6近傍で反射してパネル開口部13を通って進行して光検出器16内の光センサ22の受光部23に入射するとして、受光部23に入射する光のうち端部反射シート6で反射した光はこの端部反射シート6で反射しない光よりも輝度が高く二次的な光源のように見える。しかも、液晶パネル2を縦長と横長との間で切り替えると、それに伴って導光板3が動いてしまう。そのため、端部反射シート6で反射する光も変動するので、受光部23で検出する光強度も変動してしまう。よって、端部反射シート6で反射した光が受光部23に入射しないように規制する必要がある。
そのためには、図2において、導光板3の端部と端部反射シート6との境界の位置Cで反射してパネル開口部13を通過する光L1が光センサ22の受光部23に入射しないでその内側(A方向)を通過するように遮光板12の端部位置を決定して開口部11内に突出させてシャーシ7に固定するものとする。このような光L1を内側光L1とする。換言すれば、導光板3の位置Cと遮光板12の先端部を結ぶ線の延長線(内側光L1)が受光部23から外れるように遮光板12の取り付け位置を設定する。そして、受光部23は内側光L1の外側(B方向)にあるものとする。
また、導光板3の表面と端部反射シート6との境界の位置Cから発し、シャーシ7に形成された開口部11の壁面11aで反射して受光部23の近傍に向けて進行する光が、光センサ22の受光部23の外側(B方向)に進む光を外側光L2とする。換言すれば、受光部23は外側光L2の内側(A方向)にあるものとする。
そして、内側光L1を含む内側平面と外側光L2を含む外側平面の範囲内の反射光が受光部23に入射可能であるようにパネル開口部13を設定し、この範囲内に受光部23が位置する。そのため、端部反射シート6で反射する光は内側光L1を含む内側平面と外側光L2を含む外側平面の範囲を外れる光となるため、光センサ22の受光部23に入射しない。また、端部反射シート6で反射する光のうち内側光L1を含む内側平面と外側光L2を含む外側平面の範囲内の光は光センサホルダ開口部25によって規制されないように、光センサホルダ開口部25の内径を規定することが好ましい。なお、パネル開口部13はシャーシ7の開口部11だけで形成されてもよい。
開口部11の壁面11aでは反射する外側光L2について、本実施形態ではシャーシ7はアルミ合金で形成されているため乱反射することがある。そのため、受光部23と外側光L2を含む外側平面との距離を若干広くとることが誤検出を排除するために好ましい。また、シャーシ7における開口部11の形成位置について、裏面反射シート8の端部には取り付け時の表裏面を区別するための位置決め用の切欠(図示せず)が形成されており、この切欠が開口部11に重なると光センサ22での受光量に影響を与える。そのため、シャーシ7の端部において裏面反射シート8の切欠のない部分に対向する位置に開口部11を形成するものとする。
本実施形態による液晶表示装置1の光検出器16は上述の構成を備えており、次に光検出器16による光検出方法について説明する。
液晶表示装置1は図2及び図4に示すように横長(ランドスケープ)位置にあるものとし、液晶表示装置1が起動すると光源4から射出する光は導光板3内を透過して反射させられ、端部反射シート6及び裏面反射シート8で反射して導光板3から前方に射出され、拡散板9及び光学シートを透過して拡散し液晶パネル2を透過することで液晶パネル2の画像をユーザーが観察できる。シャーシ7に形成された開口部11の外側の一部が遮光板12で覆われているため、四角形状のパネル開口部13に対して一方側に導光板3が全体に対向し、他方側には光センサ22の受光部23が対向している。
そして、導光板3に入射する光の一部は導光板3で反射してパネル開口部13を通過して光センサ22の受光部23に入射し、受光される。
このとき、端部反射シート6で反射する光の一部が開口部11のパネル開口部13を通過して光センサ22方向に向かうが、パネル開口部13の遮光板12近傍を通る光は内側光L1を含む内側平面よりも内側(A方向)を進むため受光部23を外れる。また、シャーシ7の開口部11の壁面11aで反射してパネル開口部13を通過する光は外側光L2を含む外側平面よりも外側(B方向)を進むため、これも受光部23を外れる。そのため、光センサ22の受光部23に入射する光は内側光L1と外側光L2の範囲内の光であり、少なくとも端部反射シート6で反射する光はパネル開口部13を形成する遮光板12と開口部11の壁面11aで仕切られてカットされる。そのため、受光部23に入射する光は二次光源となる端部反射シート6での強度が高い反射光が排除されるため、受光部23で検出する光の強度のバラツキを防止して精度良く液晶パネル2の明るさを検出できる。
受光部23で受光した光の強度が低下した場合には、図示しない制御手段により光源4が劣化したと判断して光源4への供給電流を増大させて液晶パネル2の明るさを増大させる。
また、本実施形態による液晶表示装置1を横長から縦長に切り換えると、図5に示すように、導光板3の側端部に設けたシャーシ7の開口部11とパネル開口部13は液晶表示装置1の上端部に位置が変えられる。そして、導光板3はその自重でわずかに、例えば数ミリ下方に移動する。すると、開口部11に対して導光板3の上端部がわずかに下方に移動するが、開口部11の上端側は遮光板12によって覆われているためパネル開口部13は全面に導光板3が対向する位置にある。
従って、液晶表示装置1を横長から縦長に切り換えても、導光板3で反射してパネル開口部13を通過して受光部23に受光する光の強度が変動することはなく、横長位置と同様に、二次光源となる端部反射シート6での光強度の高い反射光が排除され、受光部23で検出する光の強度のバラツキを防止して精度良く液晶パネル2の明るさを検出できる。
また、本実施形態による液晶表示装置1では、光センサ22の受光部23が長方形であり、しかも、受光量を検出するための光が通過するパネル開口部13も長方形であって、受光部23の辺と対向するパネル開口部13の辺とが互いに平行である。加えて、パネル開口部13の辺と導光板3の側端部も平行である。そのため、液晶表示装置1が横長と縦長のいずれかの姿勢に保持されて受光部23に入射するパネル開口部13を通過した光の境界がずれたとしても、受光部23におけるR、G、Bの単色カラーセンサがマトリクス状に配列されて長方形をなすため、各カラーセンサへの入射光量の比が一定であって受光する光の強さの比に変動を来さないので、光の強度のバラツキが低減された精度のよい光検出を行える。
上述のように本実施形態による液晶表示装置1によれば、液晶表示装置1が横長と縦長のいずれかの姿勢に切り換えられて導光板3の位置にずれを生じたとしても、導光板3の端部からの光を取り込まないようにしたため、光センサ22の受光部23で受光される光の強度に変動を来さないので精度よく光の強度を検出できる。
また、光センサ22の受光部23は四角形であり、導光板3での反射光を通過させるパネル開口部13を受光部23の辺に略平行な四角形としたから、液晶表示装置1を横長と縦長との間で切り換えた場合、受光部23に入射する光の位置が変化したとしてもマトリクス状に配列されたR、G、Bの各単色カラーセンサへの入射光量の比が一定であって円形の開口部と比較して受光する光量の比に変動を来さないので、高精度な検出を行える。
なお、本発明は上述の実施形態による液晶表示装置1に限定されることはなく、本発明の要旨を変更しない範囲で適宜の変更や置換等が可能であり、これらはいずれも本発明に含まれる。
 例えば、上述した実施形態による液晶表示装置1では、横長状態で導光板3の下部の端面に光源4を配設した構成について説明したが、液晶パネル2の輝度を大きくするためには、導光板3の下部の面と上部の面に光源4を配設してもよく、或いは側部の面に光源4を配設してもよい。また、導光板3の一の端面に液晶の液晶パネル2を駆動するドライバを設置することがあるが、ドライバを設置する端面も開口部11を設置することを避けることが好ましい。また、光センサ22は温度による影響を受けるため、光源4やドライバを設けた端面とは別の端面である、光源4から離れた温度変動の少ない位置に光センサ22を設置することが好ましい。
また、受光部23に光を入射させる範囲を規定するパネル開口部13について、上述の実施形態では開口部11と遮光板12とで形成し、遮光板12の取り付け位置を調整可能であるが、遮光板12を取り付けることなく、液晶表示装置1を横長位置と縦長位置とに切り換えても導光板3が全面に対向し且つ端部反射シート6の反射光を受光部23で受光しないように開口部11を形成してもよい。
 なお、本発明の上述した実施形態では、液晶表示装置1を用いて説明したが、本発明は液晶表示装置に限定されるものではなく、バックライトを用いた各種の表示装置に適用できる。また、本発明においてパネル開口部13は光透過用開口部に含まれる。

Claims (9)

  1. 導光板の一の端部に対向する光源からの光を前記導光板内に導いて液晶パネル部に照射させる表示装置であって、
    前記導光板と前記光源とを覆うシャーシと、
    前記液晶パネル部の端部にあって前記シャーシに形成した光透過用開口部と、
    前記導光板から出射される光を前記光透過用開口部を介して検出する光センサと、を備え、
     前記光透過用開口部は矩形であることを特徴とする表示装置。
  2.   前記導光板の端部と前記光透過用開口部の一辺とを結ぶ線の延長線を含む内側平面より外側に前記光センサの受光部が位置する請求項1に記載された表示装置。
  3. 前記導光板の端部から発して前記光透過用開口部の壁面で反射した光線を含む外側平面よりも内側に前記光センサの受光部が位置する請求項1または2に記載された表示装置。
  4. 前記光透過用開口部は、前記導光板の前記光源が対向しない端部の背面側に設けた請求項1から3のいずれか1項に記載された表示装置の光検出器。
  5. 前記光センサの受光部は矩形に形成されており、前記受光部の一辺と前記光透過用開口部の一辺とが略平行に形成されている請求項1から4のいずれか1項に記載された表示装置。
  6. 前記導光板の端部には光を反射させる第1の光学部材を設けたことを特徴とする請求項1から5のいずれか1項に記載された表示装置。
  7. 前記導光板と前記シャーシとの間には光を反射させる第2の光学部材が設けられており、前記第2の光学部材に形成された位置決め用の切欠の位置を外れた位置に前記光透過用開口部を位置させた請求項1から6のいずれか1項に記載された表示装置。
  8.  前記光透過用開口部は、前記シャーシに形成した開口部と、該開口部の開口面積を規制する遮蔽部材とで構成されている請求項1から7のいずれか1項に記載された表示装置。
  9. 導光板の一の端部に対向する光源からの光を前記導光板内に導いて液晶パネル部に照射させる表示装置のバックライト光検出方法において、
    前記液晶パネル部の端部における前記導光板と光源を覆うシャーシに矩形の光透過用開口部を設け、
    前記導光板で反射した光を、前記光透過用開口部を通して光センサで受光させて受光量を検出するようにしたことを特徴とする表示装置のバックライト光検出方法。
