Description
本発明は、捲回された電極群が電池ケース内に収容された密閉型二次電池に関する。
一般に、リチウムイオン二次電池等の密閉型二次電池は、正極板及び負極板がセパレータを介して捲回された電極群が、電解液とともに電池ケース内に収容されている。ここで、電池ケースの開口部は、ガスケットを介して封口板で封口されている。また、正極板は、正極リードを介して封口板に接続され、負極板は、負極リードを介して電池ケースの底部に接続されている。さらに、正極板または負極板が、電池ケースまたは封口板と接触して内部短絡が生じるのを防止するために、電極群の上下には、絶縁板が配置されている。
ここで、電極群の封口板側に配置された絶縁板は、電池ケースの側壁に形成された溝部によって規制されており、これにより、電極群が電池ケース内で移動するのを防止している。
しかしながら、絶縁板の外周端と、電池ケースの内周面との間に隙間がある場合、外部から電池に衝撃が加わると、電極群が封口板側に飛び出して封口板に接触し、内部短絡が発生する畏れがある。
このような問題に対して、特許文献1には、絶縁板の外周端を、電池ケースの内周面に当接させる技術が記載されている。これにより、絶縁板を、電池ケースの溝部に確実に拘束することができ、電池に衝撃が加わっても、電極群が封口板側に飛び出すのを防止できる。
一般に、密閉型二次電池は、電池内で、内部短絡等に起因して発生した高温ガスを電池外に放出する安全機構を備えている。通常、電池内で発生した高温ガスは、電極群の封口板側に配置された絶縁板に形成された貫通孔を介して、封口板に形成された開放部から外部に放出される。
このとき、絶縁板は、電池ケースの溝部に拘束されているため、絶縁板の近傍にある溝部は、絶縁板の貫通孔から放出された高温ガスに直接曝される畏れがある。電池内で発生した高温ガスは、1000℃を超えるときもあり、この高温ガスに曝された溝部が局所的に熱せられると、溝部が非常に高温になる畏れがある。さらに、溝部が熱せられて穴が開いたりすると、封口板に形成された開放部とは異なる意図しない箇所から、不用意に高温ガスが外部に放出される畏れがある。
本発明は、かかる課題に鑑みなされたもので、その主な目的は、電池内で高温ガスが発生しても、電池ケースの溝部が高温になったり、穴が開くのを防止した密閉型二次電池を提供することにある。
本発明に係る密閉型二次電池は、正極板及び負極板がセパレータを介して捲回または積層された電極群が、円筒形の電池ケース内に収容された密閉型二次電池であって、電池ケースの開口部は、ガスケットを介して封口板によって封口されており、電極群の封口板側には、貫通孔が形成された絶縁板が配設されており、絶縁板は、絶縁板の外周端が、電池ケースの内周面に当接した状態で、電池ケースの側壁に形成された溝部によって拘束されており、絶縁板の貫通孔は、貫通孔の径方向外方に最も離れた部位が、溝部の内周端部から、少なくとも1mm以上離れて形成されている。
本発明によれば、電池内で高温ガスが発生しても、電池ケースの溝部が高温になったり、穴が開くのを防止した密閉型二次電池を提供することができる。
以下、本発明の実施形態を図面に基づいて詳細に説明する。なお、本発明は、以下の実施形態に限定されるものではない。また、本発明の効果を奏する範囲を逸脱しない範囲で、適宜変更は可能である。さらに、他の実施形態との組み合わせも可能である。
図1は、本発明の一実施形態における密閉型二次電池100の構成を模式的に示した断面図である。
図1に示すように、正極板1及び負極板2がセパレータ3を介して捲回された電極群4が、電解液とともに、円筒形の電池ケース5内に収納されている。電池ケース5の開口部は、ガスケット9を介して封口板10で封口されている。封口板10は、上部金属板(正極端子を兼ねる)11、弁体12、及び下部金属板13が積層された構成をなしている。しかし、封口板10は、このような構成に限定されない。
正極板1は、正極リード14を介して下部金属板13に接続され、負極板2は、負極リード15を介して電池ケース5の底部(負極端子を兼ねる)に接続されている。また、電極群4の上下には、絶縁板6、7が、それぞれ配置されている。なお、電極群4の上方(封口板10側)に配置された絶縁板6は、絶縁板6の外周端が、電池ケース5の内周面に当接した状態で、電池ケース5の側壁に形成された溝部5aによって拘束されている。
絶縁板6には、貫通孔7が形成されており、正極板1に接続された正極リード14は、貫通孔7を介して、下部金属板13に接続されている。また、下部金属板13及び弁体12も、それぞれ開口部13a、12aが形成され、さらに、上部金属板11には、電池ケース5内で発生したガスを外部に放出する開放部11aが形成されている。
ここで、電池ケース5内に異常ガスが発生し、電池ケース5内の圧力が所定値を超えると、弁体12が破断し、電池ケース5内に発生したガスは、絶縁板6の貫通孔7、下部金属板13の開口部13a、弁体12の開口部12a、及び上部金属板11の開放部11aを介して、外部に排気される。
上述したように、絶縁板6の貫通孔7は、正極板1に接続された正極リード14を、下部金属板13に接続するための経路になると共に、電池ケース5内で発生した高温ガスを外部に放出するための経路にもなっている。従って、絶縁板6の貫通孔7の面積は、高温ガスの排気能力を考慮すると、できるだけ大きい方が好ましい。
一方、絶縁板6は、その外周端が、電池ケース5の内周面に当接した状態で、電池ケース5の側壁に形成された溝部5aによって拘束されている。そのため、電池ケース5内で発生した高温ガスが、電極群4と電池ケース5の内壁との隙間を通って、電池ケース5の溝部5aに直接当たることはない。
しかし、絶縁板6の貫通孔7の面積を大きくすると、貫通孔7の端部が、電池ケース5の溝部5aに近づくため、貫通孔7から放出された高温ガスが、直接溝部5aに当たる畏れがある。そのため、高温ガスに曝された溝部5aが局所的に熱せられて、溝部5aが異常な高温になる畏れがある。さらに、溝部5aが熱せられて穴が開いたりすると、封口板10に形成された開放部11aとは異なる意図しない箇所(溝部5a)から、不用意に高温ガスが外部に放出される畏れがある。
そこで、本願発明者等は、上記のような事態を防止するには、絶縁板6の貫通孔7の端部と、電池ケース5の溝部5aの内周端部との距離が重要なファクターと考え、検討を行った結果、本発明を想到するに至った。
図2(a)、(b)は、図1に示した密閉型二次電池100において、電池ケース5の溝部5aと絶縁板6との位置関係を示した図で、図2(a)は部分断面図、図2(b)は電池ケース5の開口部側から見た平面図である。
図2(a)、(b)に例示した絶縁板6は、円形をなしており、絶縁板6の貫通孔7も円形に形成されている。絶縁板6の外周端6bは、電池ケース5の内周面に当接した状態で、電池ケース5の溝部5aに拘束されている。また、溝部5aの内周端部5bも、概ね円形をなしている。
ここで、図2(a)に示すように、絶縁板6の貫通孔7側の端部6aと、電池ケース5の溝部5aの内周端部との距離をLとし、この距離Lを変えた電池を作製して、電池ケース5内で高温ガスが発生したときの、溝部5aに対する熱的影響を検討した。
検討には、以下のような構成のリチウムイオン二次電池を作製した。
正極板1は、アルミニウムからなる集電体上に、ニッケル酸リチウムからなる正極活物質、ポリフッ化ビニリデン(PVDF)からなる結着剤、及びアセチレンブラックからなる導電剤を、それぞれ溶剤に分散させたスラリーを塗布、乾燥した後、圧延して作製した。
負極板2は、銅箔からなる集電体上に、黒鉛からなる負極活物質、及びスチレン-ブタジエンゴムからなる結着剤を、それぞれ溶媒に分散させたスラリーを塗布、乾燥した後、圧延して作製した。
得られた正極板1及び負極板2を、ポリエチレンからなるセパレータ3を介して捲回して電極群4を作製し、これを外径18.1mm、厚さ0.13mmのニッケルメッキを施した炭素鋼からなる円筒形の電池ケース5内に収容し、電池ケース5の開口部をガスケット9を介して封口板10で封口して、リチウムイオン二次電池100を作製した。
ここで、絶縁板6は、厚み0.3mmのガラスフェノール樹脂からなる円形状の平板を用い、溝部5aの内周端部5bと絶縁板6の貫通孔7側の端部6aとの距離Lを、0~1.80mmの範囲で変えた電池を作製した。なお、溝部5aの内周端部は、概ね円形をなしており、その内径は16mmであった。また、絶縁板6の貫通孔7は円形に形成した。
安全性の試験は、各電池に外部から200℃の熱を加えて強制的に電池を熱暴走状態にして、電池ケース5の溝部5a近傍の穴あきの有無を調べた。その結果、表1に示す。
表1に示すように、溝部5aと貫通孔7との距離Lが0.80mm以下の場合、電池ケース5の溝部5a近傍に穴あきが生じた。一方、溝部5aと貫通孔7との距離Lが1.0mm以上の場合、電池ケース5の溝部5a近傍に穴あきは生じなかった。また、溝部5a近傍の電池ケース5の温度も、500℃以下であった。
この結果から、溝部5aの内周端部5bと絶縁板6の貫通孔7側の端部6aとの距離Lを、1.0mm以上にすることによって、電池内で高温ガスが発生しても、電池ケース5の溝部5aが高温になったり、穴があいたりするのを防止することができる。
ところで、電極群4の上方に絶縁板6を配設することによって、電極群4と電池ケース5や封口板10との内部短絡を防止する一方、絶縁板6に貫通孔7を形成することによって、正極リード14を通すための経路や、高温ガスを外部に放出するための経路を確保している。そのため、絶縁板6に形成される貫通孔7の形状等は特に限定されず、目的に応じて適宜決めればよい。
例えば、図3は、絶縁板6の構成の一例を示した平面図である。図3に示すように、絶縁板6には、2種類の貫通孔7a、7bが形成されている。開口面積の大きい貫通孔7aは、正極リード14を通すための経路となり、開口面積の小さい貫通孔7bは、専ら、高温ガスを外部に放出するための経路となっている。
このように、貫通孔7は、その目的に応じて種々の形態をとるため、本発明による効果を得るためには、貫通孔7の形状や、複数の貫通孔7がある場合には、それぞれの位置関係を考慮して、溝部5aと貫通孔7との距離Lを定める必要がある。
貫通孔7の端部が、電池ケース5の溝部5aに近づくと、貫通孔7から放出された高温ガスが、直接溝部5aに当たる畏れが出てくる。従って、1箇所でも、溝部5aと貫通孔7との距離が1mm未満のところがあれば、その箇所から放出された高温ガスが、直接溝部5aに当たるため、溝部5aが異常な高温になったり、穴が開いたりする畏れがある。そのため、本発明による効果を得るためには、絶縁板6の貫通孔7は、貫通孔7の径方向外方に最も離れた部位が、溝部5aの内周端部5bから、少なくとも1mm以上離れて形成されていることが好ましい。
例えば、図3に例示した絶縁板6の場合、3つの貫通孔7bが、溝部5aの内周端部5bから1mm以上離れて形成されている場合、内周が円弧状の孔領域を有する貫通孔7aにおいて、当該孔領域の内周端部(絶縁板6の貫通孔7a側の端部)6aが、溝部5aの内周端部5bから、少なくとも1mm以上離れて形成されていればよい。
ところで、表1に示したように、溝部5aと貫通孔7との距離Lが1.0mm以上離れれば、本発明の効果が得られるが、貫通孔7の大きさを小さくし過ぎると、電池ケース5内で発生した高温ガスの排気能力が低下する。そのため、電池ケース5内の圧力が上昇し、電池ケース5が破損する畏れがある。
そこで、溝部5aと貫通孔7との距離Lを1.0mm以上に維持しつつ、貫通孔7の開口率を変えた電池を作製して、排気能力の低下が及ぼす電池ケースの破損の影響を検討した。
検討には、表1に示した電池と同じ方法でリチウムイオン二次電池を作製した。また、安全性の試験は、各電池に外部から200℃の熱を加えて強制的に電池を熱暴走状態にして、電池ケース5の破損の有無を調べた。その結果、表2に示す。
表2に示すように、絶縁板6の貫通孔7の開口率が20%以下の場合、電池ケースの破損が生じた。これは、貫通孔7の開口率が小さいために、高温ガスの排気能力が低下し、その結果、電池ケース5内の圧力が上昇し、電池ケース5の破損に至ったものと考えられる。一方、絶縁板6の貫通孔7の開口率が30%以上の場合、電池ケース5の破壊は生じなかった。これは、貫通孔7の排気能力が高いために、電池ケース5内で発生した高温ガスは、絶縁板6と封口板10との空間に排出されて、所定の圧力に達した時点で安全弁が作動し、封口板10の開放部11aから外部に放出されたためと考えられる。
以上、本発明を好適な実施形態により説明してきたが、こうした記述は限定事項ではなく、もちろん、種々の改変が可能である。例えば、上記実施形態において、密閉型二次電池として、リチウムイオン二次電池を例に説明したが、これに限定されず、例えば、ニッケル水素蓄電池等の他の非水電解質二次電池にも適用することができる。
また、上記実施形態において、電極群4として、正極板1及び負極板2をセパレータ3を介して捲回したものを用いたが、正極板1及び負極板2をセパレータ3を介して積層したものを用いてもよい。
本発明は、自動車、電動バイク又は電動遊具等の駆動用電源として有用である。

Claims (5)
- 正極板及び負極板がセパレータを介して捲回または積層された電極群が、円筒形の電池ケース内に収容された密閉型二次電池であって、
前記電池ケースの開口部は、ガスケットを介して封口板によって封口されており、
前記電極群の前記封口板側には、貫通孔が形成された絶縁板が配設されており、
前記絶縁板は、該絶縁板の外周端が、前記電池ケースの内周面に当接した状態で、前記電池ケースの側壁に形成された溝部によって拘束されており、
前記絶縁板の貫通孔は、該貫通孔の径方向外方に最も離れた部位が、前記溝部の内周端部から、少なくとも1mm以上離れて形成されている、密閉型二次電池。 - 前記絶縁板の貫通孔の開口率は、30%以上である、請求項1に記載の密閉型二次電池。
- 前記封口板には、前記電池ケース内で発生したガスを放出する開放部が形成されている、請求項1に記載の密閉型二次電池。
- 前記絶縁板の貫通孔は、該貫通孔の内周が円弧状の孔領域を有し、該孔領域の内周端部は、前記溝部の内周端部から、少なくとも1mm以上離れて形成されている、請求項1に記載の密閉型二次電池。
- 前記絶縁板は、ガラスフェノール樹脂からなる、請求項1に記載の密閉型二次電池。
