Definitions
- the present invention relates to an inter-RAT handover of a mobile station in a radio communication system including a base station that supports a plurality of radio access technologies (RAT (Radio Access Technology)).
- RAT Radio Access Technology
- Non-Patent Document 1 In 3GPP (3rd Generation Generation Partnership Project), in order to cope with the diversification of radio access technology (RAT), handover between multiple RATs standardized by 3GPP, for example, UTRAN (UMTS Terrestrial Radio Access Network) and E-UTRAN ( A handover between Evolved UTRAN) and a handover between E-UTRAN and GERAN (GSM / EDGE Radio Access Network) are defined (see Non-Patent Document 1). Furthermore, in 3GPP, a handover between a RAT standardized by 3GPP and other RATs (Non-3GPPATRAT) is also being studied (see Non-Patent Document 2).

- the external network 70 is called PDN (Protocol Data Network) in 3GPP.
- the MME 43 performs mobility management and bearer management of the mobile station (UE) 4.
- the bearer management performed by the MME 43 is to manage information (QoS class, bearer ID, bearer route information, etc.) related to the setting of the communication path (ie, EPS bearer) between the mobile station (UE) 4 and the P-GW 42, and This includes signaling for bearer setting with the base station (eNB) 11, the mobile station (UE) 4, the S-GW 41, and the like.
- information QoS class, bearer ID, bearer route information, etc.
- the base station (NB) 21 supports UTRAN defined by 3GPP, generates a UTRAN cell 20 and connects to the mobile station (UE) 4.

- Uplink user data transmitted from the mobile station (UE) 4 belonging to the base station (AP) 31 is transferred to the EPC 40 via the transfer node 61 and transferred to the external network 70 via the P-GW 42. Is done.
- Downlink user data is also transferred via the EPC 40 and the Non-3GPP host network 60 in the same manner as uplink user data.
- the Non-3GPP upper network 60 includes a RAN node and a core network node.
- the Non-3GPP upper network 60 is arranged in a wireless access network (ASN GW (Access Network Gateway) arranged in WiMAX Access Service Network (ASN) and core network (Core Services Network (CSN)).
- ASN GW and HA correspond to both the forwarding node 61 and the control node 62.
- the P-GW 42 arranged in the EPC 40 operates as an anchor node when the mobile station (UE) 4 performs handover between the base stations 11, 21, and 31 that support different RATs. To do.
- the inventors of the present application examined the connection between a multi-RAT base station that supports a plurality of RATs and an upper network. Like the above-described combination of E-UTRAN and EPC, the correspondence between the RAT and the upper network is determined in advance. For this reason, in general, a Multi-RAT base station supports connection with a plurality of higher-order networks and transmits user data to / from a higher-order network corresponding to the RAT used for connection with a mobile station. It may be configured to establish a communication path for transfer. However, the inventors of the present application have found that the selection of such an upper network by the Multi-RAT base station is not always efficient.
- Non-Patent Documents 1 and 2 describe Inter-RAT handover.
- the host network to which the mobile station (UE) 4 belongs is changed before and after these Inter-RAT handovers, so the user data communication path (for example, EPS bearer, PDN connection, IPsec tunnel, etc.) before and after the handover.
- the route of is changed. Therefore, signaling is required to secure resources necessary for the user data communication path after handover.
- Non-Patent Document 2 describes an Inter-RAT handover between 3GPP RAT (e.g. UTRAN, E-UTRAN) and Non-3GPP RAT (e.g. wireless LAN, WiMAX, cdma2000).
- 3GPP RAT e.g. UTRAN, E-UTRAN
- Non-3GPP RAT e.g. wireless LAN, WiMAX, cdma2000
- the authentication system of the mobile station (UE) 4 is usually not shared between two different upper networks before and after the handover. Therefore, in a handover between RATs conforming to different standards, the handover destination system (upper network) needs to perform authentication processing of the mobile station (UE) 4 again. Usually, the same authentication process as that for initial connection (attachment) to the host network is performed.
- Non-Patent Documents 1 and 2 When Inter-RAT handover described in Non-Patent Documents 1 and 2 is performed by a Multi-RAT base station, it takes time for bearer switching processing and mobile station (UE) authentication processing, so handover may fail. Increases nature.

- Preparation for this Inter-RAT handover is to prepare radio resources for the second RAT (second cell 120) that is the handover destination, and from the base station 1 to the mobile station 4, the connection destination cell (RAT Requesting switching).
- the base station 1 does not change the path of the communication path 400 set between the base station 1 and the forwarding node 142 before and after the Inter-RAT handover. For this reason, in the example of FIG. 4, the base station 1 suppresses transmission of the control message requesting the path change of the communication path 400 to the first and second upper networks 140 and 150.
- step S23 the mobile station 4 transmits a connection request to the base station 1 using the second RAT and connects to the second cell 120.
- step S 24 the mobile station 4 is connected to the Multi-RAT base station 1 by the second RAT (second cell 120), and passes through the base station 1 and the first upper network 140 to the transfer node 142. Data communication with the.
- FIG. 5 is a sequence diagram illustrating an Inter-RAT handover procedure according to a comparative example.
- Step S101 is the same as step S21 of FIG. That is, the mobile station 4 is connected to the Multi-RAT base station 1 by the first RAT (first cell 110), and is connected to the transfer node 142 via the base station 1 and the first upper network 140. Data communication is in progress.
- the base station 1 determines to perform an Inter-RAT handover from the first RAT (first cell 110) to the second RAT (second cell 120). At this time, the base station 1 performs signaling with at least one of the first and second upper networks 140 and 150 in order to secure resources of the second upper network 150 and perform bearer setting. For example, the base station 1 transmits a control message requesting rearrangement of bearers to the control node 143 of the first upper network 140. Then, in response to receiving the control message from the base station 1, the control node 143 transmits a control message requesting bearer setting to the transfer node 151 or the control node 152 of the second higher level network 150. Then, the base station 1 requests the mobile station 4 to switch the connection destination cell (RAT) on the condition that the bearer setting in the second upper network 150 is completed.
- RAT connection destination cell
- step S103 the mobile station 4 transmits a connection request to the base station 1 using the second RAT and connects to the second cell 120.
- step S104 the mobile station 4 connected to the second cell 120 executes an authentication process with the second upper network 150 corresponding to the second RAT.
- the authentication process in step S104 may be omitted when the authentication system is shared between the first and second upper networks 140 and 150 (for example, in the case of 3GPP EPC and GPRS packet core).
- step S ⁇ b> 105 the base station 1 transmits a bearer switching request to the transfer node 142 via the second upper network 150.
- the forwarding node 142 performs bearer reconfiguration and reroutes the communication path 400 so as to pass through the second higher-level network 150.
- step S106 the mobile station 4 is connected to the Multi-RAT base station 1 by the second RAT (second cell 120), and communicates with the transfer node 142 via the base station 1 and the second upper network 150. Data communication between them.
- the handover procedure of FIG. 4 does not require resource reservation and bearer setting in the second upper network 150, and signaling for changing the route of the communication path 400 is not necessary. It becomes unnecessary. Furthermore, the authentication process (step S104) of the mobile station 4 can be omitted. Therefore, according to the handover procedure of FIG. 4, when the Inter-RAT handover of the mobile station 4 is performed between the two RATs managed by the Multi-RAT base station 1, the handover process is reduced. Can do.

- step S32 the communication path control unit 103 secures radio resources in the second RAT in cooperation with the radio communication unit 101-2.
- the communication path control unit 103 instructs the mobile station 4 to perform a handover via the wireless communication unit 101-1.
- step S34 the communication path control unit 103 determines whether a connection request for the mobile station 4 has been received in the second RAT (second cell 120). When the connection request for the mobile station 4 is received (YES in step S34), the communication path control unit 103 executes the connection process for the mobile station 4 in cooperation with the wireless communication unit 101-2. When the connection request for the mobile station 4 is not received (NO in step S34), the communication path control unit 103 returns to step S34 for receiving the connection request again.
- the Multi-RAT base station 1 changes the path of the communication path 400 set between the base station 1 and the forwarding node 142 before and after the Inter-RAT handover. Is not configured.
- the base station 1 uses the Inter-RAT handover when the mobile station 4 performs an Inter-RAT handover from the first RAT (first cell 110) to the second RAT (second cell 120).
- the communication channel (bearer) 400 set before the communication is continuously used for user data transfer even after the Inter-RAT handover without changing the communication channel (bearer) 400 via the second upper network 150. For this reason, the Multi-RAT base station 1 and the upper networks 140 and 150 do not have to execute the process for changing the bearer path, and therefore, the process required for the Inter-RAT handover can be reduced.
- ⁇ Embodiment 3> a modification of the Inter-RAT handover procedure described in the second embodiment will be described.
