Abstract

Cette invention concerne la réduction de métaux lourds présents à l'état de trace, tels que le mercure ou l'arsenic, dans du pétrole brut en mettant en contact le pétrole brut avec un agent oxydant, et en extrayant les métaux lourds dans une phase hydrique pour une séparation ultérieure du pétrole brut. Dans un mode de réalisation, l'agent oxydant est choisi dans le groupe constitué par les hydroperoxydes, les peroxydes organiques, les peracides inorganiques et leurs sels, les peracides organiques et leurs sels, les halogènes comme l'iode (I2), le brome (Br2) et l'ozone. Dans un autre mode de réalisation, au moins un agent complexant choisi dans le groupe constitué par les halogénures métallisés et/ou les composés soufrés peut être ajouté pour faciliter l'élimination des métaux lourds présents dans le pétrole brut en formant des complexes de métaux lourds solubles dans la phase aqueuse.
