This is because the multilayer film reflection layer 18c is composed of the medium 2 with a high refractive index and the medium 1 with a low refractive index, and is a multilayer film with a film thickness of ⁇ / 4, so that the reflectance is improved by the thin film interference effect. It is a result. That is, by configuring the second reflective layer 18 using the high reflective metal layer 18a, the low refractive index layer 18b, and the multilayer reflective layer 18c, the reflectance can be significantly increased for any incident angle.
- FIG. 12 shows the characteristics of the second reflective layer 18 having the configuration shown in Table 1 showing the angle dependency of the reflectance at a wavelength of 450 nm.
- the material of the low refractive index layer 18b is SiO 2 having a refractive index of 1.5
- the low refractive index material used in the multilayer reflective layer 18c is SiO 2 that is the same material as the low refractive index layer 18b.
- the light diffusion layer 21 is made of opal glass, the refractive index is lower than the refractive index 2.5 of GaN of the light emitting layer 14. Therefore, by arranging the light diffusion layer 21 between the light emitting layer 14 and the first reflective layer 17, high extraction efficiency is realized without impairing the effect of the low refractive index layer 18b in the second reflective layer 18. can do.
- the LED 2 that is a light emitting unit that emits light of a specific color
- the diffusion sheet 4 that is a diffusion member for diffusing the light from the LED 2 to form a surface light source.
- the LED 2 is provided on the transparent substrate 11 and emits light of a specific wavelength.
- the LED 2 is formed on the light emission side with respect to the light emitting layer 14 and the light emitting layer 14.
- the second reflective layer 18 is a multilayer reflective film in which a highly reflective metal layer 18a made of a metal film having a high reflectance, a low refractive index layer 18b made of a material film having a low refractive index, and a material film having a different reflectance are laminated. It is constituted by the layer 18c.
- the light interference effect by the second reflective layer 18 and the first reflective layer 17 is suppressed, so that the angle characteristic of the transmission / reflectance of the first reflective layer 17, that is, the emission angle is 65 degrees or more.
- the light distribution characteristic of the wide light distribution can be easily controlled, and an inexpensive and highly efficient backlight device can be provided.
- the light diffusion layer 21 is disposed between the first reflective layer 17 and the light emitting layer 14, but the light diffusion layer 21 is disposed between the light emitting layer 14 and the second reflective layer 18. May be arranged. In short, a light diffusion layer 21 that diffuses light emitted from the light emitting layer 14 may be disposed between the first reflective layer 17 and the second reflective layer 18.
- the configuration of the second reflective layer 18 is a highly reflective metal layer 18a, a low refractive index layer 18b formed on the high reflective metal layer 18a, and a multilayer formed on the low refractive index layer 18b.
- the film reflective layer 18c is used, the order of the low refractive index layer 18b and the multilayer reflective layer 18c may be switched. In short, the low refractive index layer 18b and the multilayer reflective layer 18c may be formed on the high reflective metal layer 18a.
- the blue light emitted from the LED chip 8 is widely distributed as shown in the characteristic B of FIG.
- the light distribution characteristic of yellow light having a main emission wavelength of 550 nm to 610 nm emitted by the phosphor film being excited by the blue light from the LED 2 is Lambertian like the characteristic Y. That is, the light distribution characteristics of the blue light and the yellow light after being emitted from the LED package 9 are different, the yellow light has a maximum value of the luminous intensity in the direction directly above the LED 2, and the blue light is around 70 degrees of 65 degrees or more. Has a maximum value of luminous intensity. For this reason, it becomes a yellowish white just above the LED 2 and becomes a blueish white near 70 degrees, resulting in different colors depending on the angle, which causes color unevenness.
- FIG. 14 shows an example of the spectrum of a blue LED. As shown in FIG. 14, it can be seen that the spectrum of the light B2 emitted in the 60 degree direction is shifted to the long wavelength side by about 10 nm with respect to the light B1 emitted in the 0 degree direction. Further, as shown in FIG. 14, since the emission spectrum changes depending on the angle, the chromaticity also shifts.
- FIG. 15 shows an example of an absorption spectrum of a phosphor that emits yellow light.
- the peak in the absorption spectrum is in the vicinity of 450 nm, which is the same as the peak of the emission spectrum in the 0 degree direction, and the absorption coefficient decreases when the wavelength is longer than 450 nm. That is, the amount of light absorbed by the phosphor is reduced, and the emission intensity of the excited yellow phosphor is weakened. Therefore, the 0 degree direction after passing through the phosphor becomes the spectrum shown in FIG. 16A, and the 60 degree direction becomes the spectrum shown in FIG. 16B.
- the emission intensity of the yellow phosphor is relatively weaker than the emission intensity of the blue LED, and the color changes at 0 degrees and 60 degrees. As a result, in the backlight device Color unevenness will occur.
- the blue light emitted from the LED 2 exhibits a light distribution characteristic as shown in FIG.
- the light passes through the diffusion sheet 4 and enters the wavelength conversion sheet 5.
- a part of the blue light incident on the wavelength conversion sheet 5 is transmitted as it is, and the remaining blue light is converted into yellow light by the wavelength conversion action of the phosphor and transmitted.
- the light distribution characteristic of the blue light immediately after passing through the wavelength conversion sheet 5 and the yellow light converted by the wavelength conversion action of the phosphor have the same illuminance distribution and both have the Lambertian light distribution characteristic.
- blue light and yellow light have the same characteristics. That is, the occurrence of color unevenness as described above can be suppressed, and image quality can be improved as a liquid crystal display device.
- the wavelength conversion sheet 5 is disposed between the diffusion sheet 4 and the brightness enhancement sheet 6, but is not limited thereto.
- it can be disposed between the reflector 3 and the diffusion sheet 4.
- an effect of reducing color unevenness can be obtained.
- a diffusion plate having a high mechanical strength is used instead of the diffusion sheet 4 as the diffusion member, another optical sheet can be held on the diffusion plate.
- the diffusion plate and the brightness enhancement sheet 6 What is necessary is just to arrange
- the brightness increasing sheet 6 reflects a part of the incident light rearward and increases the front brightness of the emitted light by transmitting a part of the incident light and collecting it toward the normal direction of the exit surface.
- the present invention is not limited to this.
- other light may be used.
- the configuration may be such that only the polarization component absorbed by the liquid crystal panel 7 is reflected and the remaining light is transmitted.
- the wavelength conversion sheet 5 is provided with a phosphor film that converts blue light into yellow light, but is not limited thereto.
- a phosphor film that converts blue light into red light and a phosphor film that converts blue light into green light may be included.
- white light can be generated by mixing the blue light from the LED 2 that is the light emitting means with the red light and the green light that have been wavelength-converted by the wavelength conversion sheet 5.
- an LED that emits ultraviolet light having a main emission wavelength of 350 nm to 400 nm is used as the LED 2, and the wavelength conversion sheet 5 is excited by an ultraviolet LED and is red, blue,
- a structure in which phosphors R, G, and B having a characteristic of emitting green light are formed, and white may be realized by mixing blue, green, and red colors.
- the ultraviolet light LED since the ultraviolet light is not used as a part of white, the color unevenness is not affected by the change in chromaticity of the LED, and is affected only by the excitation efficiency of the phosphor. A backlight device with little color unevenness can be realized.
- a random uneven structure is formed on a part of the p-type contact layer 16 by etching, for example, and a layer made of SiO 2 is formed on the surface of the uneven structure.
- the light diffusion layer 21 may be used.
- FIG. 18 is a cross-sectional view showing a schematic configuration of a liquid crystal display device using a direct type backlight device according to another embodiment.
- the wavelength conversion sheet 25 configured to be thick in the vicinity of the angle having the maximum value of luminous intensity is used as the wavelength conversion means.
- the thickness t2 near the angle having the maximum value of the luminous intensity of the LED 2 is thicker than the thickness t1 on the optical axis of the LED 2. It is comprised as follows.
- the thickness of the wavelength conversion sheet 25 on the optical axis of the LED 2 is t1, and the thickness decreases as the distance from the optical axis increases.
- the thickness t1 on the optical axis of the LED 2 is the same for each LED 2, and the film thickness change of the wavelength conversion sheet 25 changes concentrically around the optical axis of the LED 2.
- the first reflective layer 17 is formed of a dielectric multilayer film
- the light spectrum is different, and the excitation efficiency of the phosphor is lowered, resulting in color unevenness.
- the emission intensity of the yellow phosphor film with respect to the emission intensity of the blue light of the LED 2 can be made substantially equal, and a backlight device with little color unevenness can be obtained.
- the present invention provides an inexpensive and highly efficient backlight device and is useful for improving the image quality of a liquid crystal display device.
