- FIG. 11 is a diagram illustrating a schematic configuration of a display device according to the fifth embodiment.
- 12 is a cross-sectional view taken along line XII-XII in FIG.
- a display device includes a fluorescent light-emitting layer having a fluorescent dye molecule that absorbs light and emits fluorescence, and a liquid crystal layer configured to be switchable between a transparent state and a scattering state,
- the fluorescent dye molecule is a dichroic fluorescent dye molecule having different emission intensity depending on the emission direction, and the dichroic fluorescent dye molecule has a transition dipole moment in each molecule in the fluorescent light emitting layer. They are oriented in the same direction (first configuration).
- the liquid crystal layer and the fluorescent light emitting layer containing the fluorescent dye are separated. Therefore, it is not necessary to dissolve the fluorescent dye in the liquid crystal layer, so that it is not necessary to increase the thickness of the liquid crystal layer so that a large amount of the fluorescent dye can be added to the liquid crystal layer. Further, in the above-described configuration, in order to obtain sufficient fluorescence, the fluorescence emission layer may be thickened. Therefore, with the above-described configuration, the amount of light emission can be changed without changing the voltage applied to the liquid crystal layer.
- the fluorescent dye molecules in the fluorescent light emitting layer are dichroic fluorescent dye molecules having different emission intensity depending on the direction of light emission. Therefore, by making the direction of the transition dipole moment the same in each molecule as in the above configuration, light can be emitted in the same direction from the dichroic fluorescent dye molecule, and the fluorescent light emitting layer is brighter or It becomes possible to emit light with higher contrast.
- the intensity of the fluorescence emission can be changed by changing the refractive state of the strong light emitted from the dichroic fluorescent dye molecule in the display device. That is, by controlling the liquid crystal in the liquid crystal layer, the bright light emitted from the dichroic fluorescent dye molecule is scattered by the liquid crystal and taken out, or totally reflected in the display device and confined in the display device. It becomes possible. Therefore, the state of fluorescence emission of the display device can be changed by controlling the liquid crystal in the liquid crystal layer.
- the dichroic fluorescent dye molecule is preferably oriented in the fluorescent light emitting layer so that the direction of the transition dipole moment coincides with the thickness direction of the fluorescent light emitting layer ( Second configuration).
- the dichroic fluorescent dye molecule has a characteristic of emitting light that oscillates in a direction parallel to the transition dipole moment in a direction crossing the transition dipole moment. Therefore, with the configuration as described above, the light emitted in the direction intersecting the transition dipole moment of the dichroic fluorescent dye molecule is transmitted by the liquid crystal when the liquid crystal in the liquid crystal layer is in a scattering state. Scattered and taken out. On the other hand, when the liquid crystal in the liquid crystal layer is in a transparent state, the light emitted in the direction intersecting with the transition dipole moment of the dichroic fluorescent dye molecule is, for example, in the transparent layer including the liquid crystal layer and the fluorescent light emitting layer. Repeat total reflection. Therefore, with the above-described configuration, the fluorescence emission of the display device can be controlled by controlling the liquid crystal in the liquid crystal layer.
- the direction of the transition dipole moment of the dichroic fluorescent dye molecule coincides with the thickness direction of the fluorescent light emitting layer. In addition to the complete coincidence, the direction of the transition dipole moment is inclined with respect to the thickness direction. This includes cases where
- an ultraviolet absorbing layer that absorbs ultraviolet rays is provided between the fluorescent light emitting layer and the liquid crystal layer (third configuration).
- the dichroic fluorescent dye molecules in the fluorescent light emitting layer efficiently absorb the ultraviolet rays and emit light.
- ultraviolet rays that are not absorbed by the dichroic fluorescent dye molecules in the fluorescent light emitting layer are absorbed by the ultraviolet absorbing layer before reaching the liquid crystal layer.
- the dichroic fluorescent dye molecule can emit light more brightly by ultraviolet rays, and the liquid crystal layer can be protected from ultraviolet rays.
- the fluorescent light emitting layer includes a light emitting layer formed in a sheet shape, and an adhesive layer that adheres the light emitting layer to an adherend, and the light emitting It is preferable that an ultraviolet absorber is added to at least one of the layer and the adhesive layer (fourth configuration).
- the fluorescent light emitting layer can be easily provided in the display device if the sheet-like fluorescent light emitting layer is attached to a substrate or the like.
- the ultraviolet absorber added to at least one of the light emitting layer and the adhesive layer can prevent ultraviolet rays from reaching the liquid crystal layer.
- an electrode is provided only on one side in the thickness direction of the liquid crystal layer, and the electrode is a comb-like electrode ( Fifth configuration).
- a light guide plate for guiding light from a light source to the fluorescent light emitting layer is provided on the fluorescent light emitting layer (sixth configuration).
- the dichroic fluorescent dye molecule can emit fluorescent light more brightly.
- any one of the first to sixth configurations light that generates light by receiving light emitted from the dichroic fluorescent dye molecules in the fluorescent light-emitting layer outside the surface of the fluorescent light-emitting layer. It is preferable to include a power generation unit (seventh configuration).
- the photovoltaic unit is provided such that the light receiving surface thereof faces the end in the surface direction of the fluorescent light emitting layer (eighth configuration).
- the dichroic fluorescent dye molecule is arranged in the fluorescent light emitting layer so that the direction of the transition dipole moment coincides with the thickness direction of the fluorescent light emitting layer, the dichroic fluorescent dye molecule is emitted from the dichroic fluorescent dye molecule.
- Light can be efficiently received by the photovoltaic unit. Therefore, by arranging the photovoltaic unit as described above, the photovoltaic unit can efficiently generate power.
- the dimension of the structural member in each figure does not represent the dimension of an actual structural member, the dimension ratio of each structural member, etc. faithfully.
- FIG. 1 shows a schematic configuration of a display panel 1 of a liquid crystal display device (display device) according to the first embodiment.
- the display panel 1 includes an active matrix substrate 2, a counter substrate 3, and a liquid crystal layer 4 sandwiched between them.
- the active matrix substrate 2 includes a substrate 11 on which many pixels are formed in a matrix.
- the active matrix substrate 2 is provided with a pixel electrode 12 and a thin film transistor (TFT: Thin Film Transistor, hereinafter referred to as “TFT”) corresponding to each pixel.
- TFT Thin Film Transistor
- the substrate 11 is made of a translucent glass substrate, and the pixel electrode 12 is also made of a transparent conductive film. That is, in the present embodiment, the active matrix substrate 2 is a transmissive substrate that can transmit light.
- the counter substrate 3 includes a glass base substrate 21, a counter electrode 22 facing the pixel electrode 12 of the active matrix substrate 2, and a fluorescent light emitting layer 23 having a dichroic fluorescent dye molecule 23a.
- the fluorescent light emitting layer 23 is provided between the base substrate 21 and the counter electrode 22. That is, in the counter substrate 3, the counter electrode 22, the fluorescent light emitting layer 23, and the base substrate 21 that are disposed to face the pixel electrodes 12 of the active matrix substrate 2 are stacked in this order from the active matrix substrate 2 side.
- the counter electrode 22 of the counter substrate 3 is also made of a transparent conductive film, like the pixel electrode 12 of the active matrix substrate 2. The configuration of the fluorescent light emitting layer 23 will be described later.
- the liquid crystal layer 4 is formed by dispersing liquid crystal as liquid crystal droplets 4a in a polymer matrix 4b. That is, the liquid crystal display device of the present embodiment is a display device provided with so-called polymer dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC: Polymer Dispersed Liquid Crystal, hereinafter referred to as “PDLC”).
- PDLC Polymer Dispersed Liquid Crystal
- the liquid crystal molecules in the liquid crystal droplet 4a are oriented in random directions (scattering state). Thereby, since the refractive index between the polymer matrix 4b and the liquid crystal droplet 4a changes, light is scattered at the interface between them.
- the liquid crystal molecules in the liquid crystal droplet 4a are aligned with their molecular axes aligned in a predetermined direction (alignment state).
- the liquid crystal display device applies a voltage between the pixel electrode 12 and the counter electrode 22 by driving the TFT of the active matrix substrate 2 in accordance with a signal from a driver provided on the active matrix substrate 2. It is configured as follows.
- the liquid crystal display device is configured to control the liquid crystal in the liquid crystal layer 4 by such a voltage between the pixel electrode 12 and the counter electrode 22 and display an image on the display panel 1.
- the fluorescent light emitting layer 23 includes a dichroic fluorescent dye molecule 23a and a liquid crystalline polymer 23b for holding the dichroic fluorescent dye molecule 23a.
- the dichroic fluorescent dye molecule 23a is a material having an absorption band in an ultraviolet wavelength region (for example, 10 nm to 400 nm) and a visible light wavelength region (for example, 380 nm to 750 nm), and having a dichroic ratio of 5 or more. Consists of.
- the dichroic fluorescent dye molecule 23a is made of, for example, a benzothiadiazole-based or coumarin-based, cyanine-based, pyridine-based, rhodamine-based, styryl-based, or anthraquinone-based fluorescent dye.
- the dichroic fluorescent dye molecule 23a has the property of absorbing fluorescent light such as ultraviolet rays and visible rays.
- the dichroic fluorescent dye molecule 23a is in a direction parallel to the molecular long axis as compared with the absorption coefficient of light that is oscillated in the direction intersecting the molecular long axis (light traveling in parallel to the molecular long axis). It has an absorption characteristic that the absorption coefficient of light that amplifies (light that travels in a direction crossing the molecular long axis) is larger. That is, in the dichroic fluorescent dye molecule 23a of the present embodiment, the molecular long axis and the direction of the transition moment of light absorption coincide with each other.
- the dichroic fluorescent dye molecule 23a has a light emission characteristic that the fluorescence emission coefficient in the direction parallel to the molecular long axis is larger than the fluorescence emission coefficient in the direction crossing the molecular long axis. That is, in the dichroic fluorescent dye molecule 23a of the present embodiment, the molecular long axis coincides with the direction of the transition moment of light emission. Therefore, the dichroic fluorescent dye molecule 23a emits stronger light in the direction intersecting the molecular long axis. In the following description, the dichroic fluorescent dye molecule 23a is described as a vertically long ellipse, and the longitudinal direction thereof corresponds to the molecular long axis.
- the liquid crystalline polymer 23b is a resin material capable of orienting the dichroic fluorescent dye molecules 23a so that the molecular major axis coincides with the stacking direction of each layer (the thickness direction of the fluorescent light emitting layer 23) as shown in FIG. Consists of.
- the liquid crystalline polymer 23b is composed of a compound having a photoreactive group at a molecular terminal, a diacrylate compound having a liquid crystalline skeleton, or the like.
- An ultraviolet absorbing material that absorbs ultraviolet rays may be mixed in the liquid crystalline polymer 23b. Thereby, the ultraviolet-ray which permeate
- the dichroic fluorescent dye molecule 23a is held in the fluorescent light emitting layer 23 by the liquid crystalline polymer 23b, so that the direction intersecting the molecular long axis of the dichroic fluorescent dye molecule 23a, that is, the display panel 1 In the in-plane direction, stronger light is emitted from the dichroic fluorescent dye molecule 23a.
- only weak light is emitted from the dichroic fluorescent dye molecule 23a in the direction parallel to the molecular long axis of the dichroic fluorescent dye molecule 23a, that is, in the thickness direction of the fluorescent light emitting layer 23. Therefore, as shown by thin solid lines in FIGS. 2 and 3, almost no light is emitted directly from the dichroic fluorescent dye molecule 23a to the outside of the display panel 1.
- each layer of the display panel 1 is made of a transparent material, the light emitted from the dichroic fluorescent dye molecules 23a in the in-plane direction of the display panel 1 is separated from the display panel 1 and the air. Reflects at the interface. That is, as shown in FIG. 2, when a voltage is applied to the liquid crystal layer 4 and the liquid crystal layer 4 is in a transparent state, light emitted from the dichroic fluorescent dye molecules 23a is transmitted at the interface with air. In order to totally reflect, the reflection is repeated in the display panel 1 (see thick arrow). The light emitted from the dichroic fluorescent dye molecule 23a to the interface with air at an incident angle smaller than the total reflection angle is emitted to the outside as it is.
- the dichroic fluorescent dye molecule 23a absorbs ultraviolet rays. Therefore, as described above, the amount of ultraviolet rays reaching the liquid crystal layer 4 can be reduced by providing the fluorescent light emitting layer 23 on the surface side of the display panel 1 of the liquid crystal layer 4.
- liquid droplets 4a in the liquid crystal layer 4 are not shown in order to clearly and simply show the difference between the states of the liquid crystal layers 4.
- the fluorescent light emitting layer 23 is formed on the base substrate 21.
- the fluorescent light emitting layer 23 is formed by, for example, a spin coat method. That is, the dichroic fluorescent dye molecule 23a is added into the liquid crystalline polymer 23b and mixed until the dichroic fluorescent dye molecule 23a is dissolved to prepare a mixed solution. Then, an alignment film is formed on the base substrate 21 in order to improve the wettability between the mixed solution and the base substrate 21. Thereafter, the above-mentioned mixed solution is supplied onto the alignment film and the base substrate 21 is spun to coat the alignment film with a predetermined film thickness. After heating in this state to evaporate the solvent, ultraviolet rays are irradiated to cure the liquid crystalline polymer 23b. Thereby, the fluorescent light emitting layer 23 is formed on the base substrate 21.
- the counter electrode 22 is formed on the fluorescent light emitting layer 23 by sputtering or the like. Then, a spacer disposed between the counter electrode 22 and the active matrix substrate 2 is provided. Thereby, the counter substrate 3 is formed.
- an alignment film is provided on the counter substrate 3 and the active matrix substrate 2. Since the manufacturing method of the active matrix substrate 2 is the same as the conventional method, the description of the manufacturing method of the active matrix substrate 2 is omitted.
- a seal pattern is formed on the counter substrate 3 with a photocurable resin. Thereafter, a mixture of liquid crystal, polymer matrix 4b and the like is dropped on the counter substrate 3, and the active matrix substrate 2 is superposed in a vacuum.
- ultraviolet light with a wavelength of 340 nm or less cut is irradiated from the counter substrate 3 side in a state where the above-mentioned mixture spreads in the seal pattern at atmospheric pressure. This cures the sealing resin and forms the PDLC. Thereafter, the seal is completely cured by baking in a state where the counter substrate 3 and the active matrix substrate 2 are combined.
- the fluorescent light emitting layer 23 including the dichroic fluorescent dye molecule 23 a is provided separately from the liquid crystal layer 4. Thereby, the fluorescent light emitting layer 23 can be thickened so that sufficient fluorescent light emission can be obtained without changing the voltage applied to the liquid crystal layer 4.
- the dichroic fluorescent dye molecules 23 a in the fluorescent light emitting layer 23 so that the molecular long axis is parallel to the thickness direction of the fluorescent light emitting layer 12, the presence or absence of fluorescent light emission is switched in the display panel 1. It becomes possible.
- the dichroic fluorescent dye molecule 23a emits strong light in the direction intersecting with the molecular long axis, whereas light emitted in a direction parallel to the molecular long axis is weak. Therefore, by arranging the dichroic fluorescent dye molecule 23a as described above, almost no light is directly emitted from the dichroic fluorescent dye molecule 23a to the outside of the display panel 1.
- the light emitted from the dichroic fluorescent dye molecule 23a in the direction crossing the molecular long axis is reflected in the display panel 1 and confined in the display panel 1 when the liquid crystal layer 4 is in a transparent state.
- the liquid crystal layer 4 is scattered by the liquid crystal layer 4 and emitted from the display panel 1. Thereby, it becomes possible to control the fluorescence emission of the display panel 1 according to the control of the liquid crystal in the liquid crystal layer 4.
- the dichroic fluorescent dye molecule 23a also absorbs ultraviolet rays, the amount of ultraviolet rays reaching the liquid crystal layer 4 can be reduced by adopting the configuration of this embodiment.
