Definitions
- the invention relates to an airbag arrangement for a vehicle occupant restraint system having the features according to the preamble of claim 1.
- Gas bag assemblies with a side airbag that protects a vehicle occupant in a side impact and a front airbag that protects the vehicle occupant in a frontal crash are known in the prior art.
- the problem to be solved by the present invention is to provide an airbag assembly with a side and a front airbag, which provides effective protection of a vehicle occupant even in an oblique impact.
- At least one inflatable side airbag which extends in the inflated state at least in sections along a vehicle longitudinal side next to a seat for a vehicle occupant to be protected
- At least one front airbag viewed in the inflated state - along the vehicle longitudinal axis - at least partially extending in front of the seat, wherein
- the side airbag is designed and provided to guide a seat occupant and as a result of an accident obliquely to the vehicle longitudinal axis forward moving vehicle occupant in the direction of the front airbag, so that the vehicle occupant bounces on the front airbag.
- the gas bag arrangement according to the invention allows a safe catching of the vehicle occupant in the event of an oblique impact, for example an impact, which takes place at an angle of approximately 30 ° to the vehicle longitudinal axis.
- an oblique impact for example an impact
- the vehicle occupant moves in such an impact between the inflated front airbag and the side airbag and can impact a vehicle structure, in particular the A-pillar, almost undamped.
- the side gas bag leads the vehicle occupant moved obliquely forward as a result of the oblique impact (especially or exclusively the head) onto the front gas bag, the kinetic energy of the vehicle occupant being reduced in particular predominantly by the impact on the front gas bag.
- the side airbag thus has mainly in the case of an oblique impact a guiding function, while the impact of the vehicle occupant on a vehicle structure by the front airbag (for example, driver or passenger gas bag) is prevented or at least damped.
- the side airbag has, in particular, a section facing the vehicle interior, which in the inflated state of the side airbag forms a guide section, along which the vehicle occupant is guided onto the front airbag.
- the guide section may e.g. be formed by substantially the entire interior side facing the side airbag.
- a portion of this page e.g., a front portion
- the side gas bag can be formed, for example, in the form of a particular curtain-like gas bag, which is integrated in the vehicle roof or a vehicle door.
- the side airbag can also be integrated in a vehicle seat.
- the side airbag when inflated a conical shape, which tapers to the rear, so that the vehicle occupant is guided by the widening, pointing in the forward direction end of the side airbag on the front airbag.
- the side airbag can have a guide section projecting into the vehicle interior, which runs angled relative to the vehicle longitudinal direction in such a way that the vehicle occupant moved as a result of an oblique impact is guided as centrally as possible along the guide section to the front airbag.
- the side airbag has a plurality of inflatable chambers, which lie one behind the other in the vehicle longitudinal direction in the inflated state of the side airbag and z.
- different thicknesses - viewed in the vehicle transverse direction and from chamber to chamber - have, wherein the thickness increases in the vehicle forward direction and a guide surface is formed by the vehicle interior facing sides of the chambers.
- the different thickness chambers can z. B. be generated in that the side airbag has chambers which viewed in the vehicle forward direction have an increasing width.
- the chambers may be designed to have a nearly round or elliptical cross-section when inflated, and to increase the volume of the chambers forward (in the forward direction of travel).
- the side airbag allows the vehicle occupant to be guided onto the front airbag by being trained and arranged in the vehicle such that the inflated chambers increasingly bulge toward the vehicle interior in the vehicle forward direction.
- the different chambers of the side airbag protrude increasingly far into the vehicle interior, without them necessarily having to differ in their thickness.
- the chambers can z. B. be configured so that they curve when inflating the side gas bag to the vehicle interior.
- clamping means are provided for the chambers to produce the curvature.
- the tensioning means may e.g. a band comprising a section of the
- Side gas bag connects each with a portion of the chambers so that the chambers receive a curved shape.
- every curved chamber can be used a band is associated with each connecting two vehicle-height-direction-spaced portions (eg, outer ends) of the chambers with each other such that the chambers increasingly bulge toward the vehicle interior.
- the different degrees of (stepped) bulging of the chambers is z. B. achieved in that the distance of the respectively connected by means of the clamping means sections in the vehicle forward direction decreases, so that the front chambers are curved more than the rear.
- the chambers which are to bulge into the vehicle interior in the inflated state, have different heights.
- the airbag blank or the airbag in uninflated and unfolded state is considered here, wherein the side airbag has a longitudinal side along which it is to be arranged in the vehicle longitudinal direction.
- the height of a chamber of the side gas bag is then its length transverse to the longitudinal side.
- the side airbag can of course also sections, in particular chambers, which are mainly a catching function (especially for a side impact) and do not fulfill a guiding function and accordingly form no guide surface for the vehicle occupant.
- the chambers or sections of the side gas bag provided for the guiding function can be provided predominantly in the front part of the side gas bag, while further collecting chambers are arranged in the rear part.
- the side airbag has a plurality of chambers, and is to be arranged in the vehicle so that the chambers in the inflated state of the side airbag lie one above the other in the vehicle height direction.
- the superimposed chambers of the side gas bag are in particular designed so that they form a guide surface for the vehicle occupant to direct it to the front airbag.
- the chambers may be designed so that they protrude (bulge) in the inflated state in the vehicle interior and thereby form a guide surface for the vehicle occupants.
- the inflated chambers bulge out approximately equally, ie the course and the position in the vehicle interior of the guide surface formed by the inflated chambers is approximately the same.

- FIG. 1A both the side airbag 1 and the front airbag 2 are shown in the inflated state, wherein the front airbag 2 extends in a section of the vehicle interior between the vehicle occupant 3 and a windshield 102 and also partially in an area between the side airbag 1 and the windshield 102 is located.
- the side airbag 1 has an area 11 whose thickness (viewed in the vehicle transverse direction, ie the thickness is the distance of a side facing the vehicle interior to the opposite, the vehicle interior side facing away from the airbag) increases in the vehicle forward direction. If the vehicle occupant 3 moves toward the side airbag 1 as a result of an oblique impact of the vehicle in a direction A which runs obliquely in relation to the vehicle longitudinal axis, a section 11 of the side airbag 1 facing the vehicle interior forms a guide section in the form of a guide surface 11, at the along the accelerated vehicle occupant 3 is directed to the front airbag 2.
- FIG. 1B This is shown in FIG. 1B.
- the vehicle occupant 3 moves toward the side airbag 1 and is supplied along the guide surface 1 1 1 along the front airbag 2 (positions 1, 2 and 3).
- the guide surface 1 1 1 directs the vehicle races 3 in the direction of the front airbag 2 in such a way that it approximately meets the front airbag 2 (which can be, for example, a co-driver's airbag) and its kinetic energy is predominantly from the front airbag 2 and not is absorbed by the side airbag 1.
- the side airbag 1 is thus designed so that it serves mainly as a guide and not as an absorption element in the event of an oblique impact.

- the side airbag 1 has in the deflated and unfolded state (FIG. 2A) a plurality of chambers 12a to 12f, which are separated from one another by seams 121.
- the height of the chambers 12a to 12e (measured transversely to the longitudinal side 11 of the side airbag 1) is the same, while the width (measured in the longitudinal direction of the side airbag 1) increases from the chamber 12a to the chamber 12e.
- the side airbag 1 is to be arranged in the vehicle so that the chamber 12e, viewed in the vehicle forward direction, is arranged at the front.
- FIGS. 2B-2E wherein FIGS. 2C and 2D are side views of the inflated side airbag from the front (FIG. 2C) and from the rear (FIG. 2D), and FIG. looks from above. It can also be seen from FIG. 2E that the chambers 12a to 12e are designed in such a way that they have an approximately circular cross-section when inflated.
- FIGS. 3A to 3E relate to a third variant of a side gas bag 1 of the gas bag arrangement according to the invention.
- the side airbag 1 has two front chambers 12a, 12b and a rear chamber 12h in the deflated and unfolded state (FIG. 3A).
- the two front chambers 12a, 12b are separated by a seam 121a from each other and from the chamber 12h by a seam 121b.
- the chamber 12h also has a seam 122 which limits the expansion of the chamber in the inflated state.
- the two front chambers 12a, 12b protrude beyond the chamber 12h, d. H. in non-inflated and unfolded state, the chambers 12a, 12b have a height h transverse to the longitudinal side 113 of the side airbag 1, which is greater than the height of the rear chamber 12h.
- the band 4 connects a portion 1222 of the airbag 1, which is approximately between the chambers 12a, 12b, each with a lower portion 122a or 122b of the two chambers 12a, 12b spaced from the vehicle height direction portion 1222.
- the band 4 causes the front chambers 12a and 12b to buckle (curve) upon inflation of the side gas bag 1 into the vehicle interior.
- FIGS. 3B and 3C This is shown in FIGS. 3B and 3C.
- the further forward chamber 12b curves more into the interior than the chamber 12a located further to the rear.
- the inward bending into the vehicle interior is aided by the greater height (inflatable length) of the two front chambers 12h relative to the rear chamber 12h, the intrusion of which causes the chambers 12a, 12b and 12h, when inflated, to be nearly the same height, ie the same extent in vehicle height direction; see.
- Fig. 3B As can also be seen in particular from the top view of FIG. 3D, a section 124h of the chamber 12h also curves into the vehicle interior, but less strongly than the two front chambers 12a, 12b.
- FIG. 3C shows the band 4 and the chambers 12a to 12e in a side view.
- the band 4 is mounted so that the chambers 12a and 12b curve V-shaped with their tip facing into the vehicle interior.

- Fig. 4E is a view of the side airbag of above.
- the side airbag 1 in turn has a plurality of chambers 12a to 12f, which extend perpendicular to a longitudinal side 1 13 of the side airbag 1, wherein the airbag 1 is to be arranged in a vehicle that its longitudinal side 1 13 extends along the vehicle longitudinal direction.
- the height of some of the chambers (12a to 12e) transversely to the longitudinal side 1 13 increases from the rear chamber 12a to the further forward chamber 12e.
- the chambers 12a to 12f have tensioning means in the form of one or more bands 4, each of which interconnects portions of the side gas bag 1 spaced apart in the vehicle height direction, so that the chambers curve and bulge into the vehicle interior when inflated.
- the curvature of the chambers 12a to 12e increases from the rear chamber 12a to the front chamber 12e, as a result of which a side of the airbag 1 facing the vehicle interior forms a guide surface 11 1, along which the vehicle occupant rests on the front airbag (not shown). the airbag assembly is directed when an oblique impact occurs.
- the chambers of the side gas bag can be designed such that they graduate into the vehicle interior bulge and also have different widths (different volumes) in the forward direction.
- FIGS. 5A to 5E relate to a fifth embodiment of a side airbag 1.
- the airbag 1 has chambers 12a-12e, the front chambers 12c, 12d and 12e being separated from each other by non-inflatable sections 129. Through the sections 129, the chambers 12d, 12e buckle in the longitudinal direction of the side airbag 1 and thereby have a larger inflatable length, without the side airbag 1 having to be extended downwards.
- the chambers 12a-12e are curved by V-shaped bands 4, whereby the front chambers 12d, 12e, due to their larger inflatable length, extend further into the vehicle interior than the remaining chambers 12a-12c.
- the front chambers 12c-12e form a guide surface 1 1 1 for the vehicle occupants.
- Figures 6A to 6E relate to a sixth embodiment of a side airbag 1.

- the chambers 12a to 12c are also formed in a portion of the side airbag 1, which is located at the front during assembly of the side airbag in a vehicle.
- another chamber 12h which, unlike the front chambers 12a-12c, serves less of a guiding function than a collision of the vehicle occupant in the event of a side crash which is not oblique but at an angle of approximately 90 ° °, d. H.
- the chambers 12 a to 12 c are provided in the vehicle interior side facing away with connecting means in the form of a band 4 or more bands 4, the two vehicle longitudinally spaced portions of the side airbag interconnect and the chambers 12 a - 12 c so to speak, so that they are in bulge inflated V-shaped into the vehicle interior into it.
- a section of the side gas bag 1 facing the vehicle interior forms a guide surface 1 1 1 for guiding the vehicle occupant in the event of an oblique accident; see. in particular Fig. 6E.
- the superimposed chambers 12a to 12c have approximately the same curvature, ie the same course, on as even as possible guidance, z. B. the head of the vehicle occupant on the front airbag (not shown) to achieve.
- the superposed chambers can also be configured with different curvatures.
- the curvatures of the chambers can be designed so that the most uniform possible guidance of the head is also possible for different sized vehicle occupants.
