Definitions

  • This invention relates to new medicinal compositions and methods for treating miscarriage and conditions associated therewith.
  • Miscarriage is pregnancy loss that occurs before 20 weeks, before the fetus is able to survive outside the womb. Most miscarriages occur in the first trimester or 12 weeks of pregnancy. As many as 50 percent of all pregnancies may end in miscarriage, because many losses occur before a woman realizes she is pregnant.
  • miscarriage causes of miscarriage are not thoroughly understood. When a woman has a first-trimester miscarriage, her healthcare provider often cannot determine the cause. However, most miscarriages occur when a pregnancy is not developing normally, either due to chromosomal defects in the embryo or problems with implantation or placenta development or immune factors.

  • maternal health problems such as poorly controlled diabetes, systemic lupus erythematosus, or thyroid disease.

  • Example 2 Case Study 1
  • This patient had a history of three miscarriages and one live birth. Each miscarriage occurred at 10 to 12 weeks. Two of the miscarriages required a D&C after which the embryos were analysed and found to be chromosomally normal. The patient had been investigated for immune or genetic factors which might increase her risk of miscarriage. It was found that she carried one allele of the MTHR gene and to remedy this she bad taken a large dose of Folic acid daily for the last couple of years. She had also been prescribed Progesterone pessaries and low dose aspirin during her last two pregnancies, however these measures had not been successful in preventing miscarriage.
  • This patient (age 34 years) had five miscarriages in two years. The miscarriages occurred between 6 weeks to 8 weeks. Several embryos had been analysed and were of normal karyotype. She had been prescribed various treatments during her last three pregnancies including heparin, aspirin, steroids and progesterone.
  • the patient (age 40 years) was diagnosed with PCOS at 18 years of age. She had irregular infrequent menstrual cycles since puberty.
