Biscuits for oral consumption by horses containing at least four and preferably at least eight different herbs evenly distributed throughout the biscuit. The biscuit is flour based, preferably sifted barley flour based and is preferably bound by molasses. The biscuits may be used for treating nervous disorders, lung weaknesses, arthritis and joint pains, hay fever and allergic pains, for promoting horn growth or as a general tonic for horses.

Description

Biscuits for Horses This invention relates to biscuits for oral consumption, for the nutritionally and/or medicinally beneficial treatment of horses.
According to the invention, there is provided a biscuit for the aforesaid purpose, the biscuit being flour based and solidified by a binder, and containing at least four different herbs in substantially uniform distribution through the biscuit, each in the amount by weight of 3 to 25 per cent of the total herb content.
The biscuit preferably comprises at least eight different herbs, each present in the amount by weight of 3 to 25 per cent of the total herb content.
The invention is further described with reference to the following examples.
Example 1 For use as a dietary food supplement for promoting horn (hoof) growth in horses, the biscuit contains the following herbs in the following amounts (percentages), making up a total herb content of 100 g (100 per cent): 12g Huang Qi 8g Bai Zhu lOg Gou Qi Zi 5g Shu Di Huang 5g Bo He 5g Fu Shen 5g Chai Hu lOg Shan Yao lOg He Shou Wu 5g Gui Zhi lOg Dang Gui 5g Gan Gau lOg Bai Shew Initially, 100 g of the concentrated herbs, in powder form, are thoroughly mixed and then added to 500 g sifted barley flour and again mixed to distribute the herbs evenly with the flour.
250 g cane molasses are then added and rubbed in to produce a breadcrumb-like mixture.
10 ml peppermint extract is then added to approximately 200 ml water and the flavoured water added into the breadcrumb-like mixture to produce a dough.
The dough is divided into 28 equally sized biscuits and dried or allowed to dry.
The resulting 28 biscuits represent 14 days supply for a horse, which will therefore receive 50 g herbs per week, i. e. approximately 7 g (2 biscuits) per day.
Trials have shown the herbal dietary supplement to be very effective at promoting horn growth in animals, especially horses.
Example 2 For use as a dietary food supplement for treating nervous disorders in horses, the biscuit contains the following herbs in the following amounts (percentages), making up a total herb content of 100 g (100 per cent): 12g Shu Di Huang 9g Dan Shen 9g Yuan Zhi 7g Wu Wei Zi 7g Bai Zi Ren 5g Huai Niu Xi lOg Nu Zhen Zi 9g Fu Shen 8g Mai Men Dong lOg Dang Shen 7g Suan Zao Ren 7g Gou Qi Zi Initially, 100 g of the concentrated herbs, in powder form, are thoroughly mixed and then added to 500 g sifted barley flour and again mixed to distribute the herbs evenly with the flour.
Trials have shown the herbal dietary supplement to be very effective at controlling and treating nervous disorders in animals, especially horses.
Example 3 An alternative biscuit formulation for treating nervous disorders in horses contains the following herbs in the following percentages, making up a total herb content of 100 per cent: 10% Shu Di Huang 5% Nu Zhen Zi 10% Huang Qi 9% Fu Shen 9% Yuan Zhi 9% Mai Men Dong 7% Wu Wei Zi 13% Shan Yao 7% Bai Zi Ren 7% Suan Zao Ren 3 % Huai Niu Xi 7% Gou Qi Zi 4 % Dan Shen The biscuits are produced and dosed as described with reference to Example 2.
Example 4 For use as a dietary food supplement for the treatment of lung weaknesses in horses, the biscuit contains the following herbs in the following amounts, making up a total herb content of 100 g: 20g Dang Shen lOg Bai Zhu lOg Zi Wan lOg Xing Ren 15g Mai Men Dong lOg Wu Wei Zi 5g Gan Gau 20g Huang Qi Initally, 100 g of the concentrated herbs, in powder form, are thoroughly mixed and then added to 500 g sifted barley flour and again mixed to distribute the herbs evenly with the flour.
250 g cane molasses and then added and rubbed in to produce a breadcrumb-like mixture.
Trials have shown the herbal dietary supplement to be very effective at treating lung weaknesses in animals, especially horses.
Ex m 1 For use as a dietary food supplement for the treatment of arthritis and joint weaknesses in horses, the biscuit contains the following herbs in the following percentages, making up a total herb content of 100 per cent: 8% Qiang Huo 8% Du Huo 4 % Qin Jioa 5% Gui Zhi 5 % Bai Shao Yao 5 % Chuan Xiong 4 % Mu Xiang 3 % Gan Cao 4% Yi Yi Ren 4% Fang Feng 5% Huai Niu Xi 8% Du Zhong 5% Sheng Jiang 5 % Xu Duan 10% Dang Shen 12% Huang Qi 5 % Fu Ling The biscuit is produced and dosed as hereinbefore described with reference to earlier examples and has been found to be very effective for the treatment of arthritis in horses.
