[001 7] 本発明の好適な実施の形態について、 以下に説明する。
[0018] まず、 本実施の形態に係る電池用炭素質導電材について説明する。
本実施の形態に係る電池用炭素質導電材は、 電池の正極または負極に配合 して用いられる電池用炭素質導電材であって、 表面が金属化合物またはホウ 素化合物で被覆された炭素基材である。
ここで、 電池用炭素質導電材とは、 活物質とともに配合して正極または負 極の導電性を高めるために用いるものをいう。
炭素基材の表面を被覆する材料は、 より好ましくはホウ素化合物であり、 また、 炭素基材は、 好ましくは、 力一ポンプラックである。
例えば表面がホウ素化合物で被覆されたカーボンブラックの場合、 ホウ素 元素の一部が力一ボンブラックの表層内部に浸透したものであてもよいが、 ホウ素元素が力一ポンプラックに固溶したものとは区別される。
以下、 ホウ素化合物で被覆された力一ポンプラックを例にとって説明する
[001 9] 上記本実施の形態に係る電池用炭素質導電材は、 その具体的な作用は必ず しも明確ではないが、 力一ボンブラックの表面をホウ素化合物で被覆して力 一ポンプラックの表面の活性を抑制することで、 導電材としての導電性を適 度に加減しながら電解液との反応による電解液の酸化、 結晶構造の破壊等を 緩和することができ、 これにより、 電池として使用可能な電圧を高くして高 ェネルギ一密度化を図ることができるのではないかと考えられる。
また、 ァグリゲート構造 (ストラクチャ一) を有する力一ポンプラックの D B P吸油量で評価されるァグリゲー卜が上記の電池反応に貢献しているも のと考えられる。 また、 この場合、 ァグリゲート構造の存在によってホウ素 化合物が適度の比表面積を有するカーボンブラックの表面に均一に被覆され ることによる効果も考えられる。
なお、 導電性を有する炭素基材の表面を不活性な材料で被覆することによ つて導電材としての導電性を適度に加減しながら電解液との反応性を抑制す ることができるものである限り、 適宜の炭素基材ぉよび表面被覆材料を用い ることができる。
[0020] 本発明において、 ホウ素化合物は、 例えば、 窒化ホウ素、 炭化ホウ素等で ホウ素化合物は、 ホウ素基準で、 カーボンブラック 1 0 0質量部に対して 0 . 1〜 1 0質量部含有することか好ましく、 さらにまた 0 . 5〜5質量部含 有することがより好ましい。 ホウ素化合物の含有量がホウ素基準で 0 . 1質 量部未満の場合は、 カーボンブラックの表面を十分被覆できず、 好ましい機 能が発現されないため、 また、 1 0質量部を超える場合は、 ホウ素またはホ ゥ素化合物を配合したカーボンブラックを焼成した場合の D B P吸油量が低 下するため、 いずれも好ましくない。
[0021 ] また、 本発明において、 カーボンブラックの種類は特に限定するものでは なく、 ファーネスブラック、 チャネルブラック、 アセチレンブラック、 サ一 マルブラック、 ランプブラック、 ケッチェンブラック等のなかから適宜選択 して用いることができる。
[0022] また、 本実施の形態に係る電池用炭素質導電材は、 カーボンブラックの表 面を被覆する皮膜中の元素としてホウ素元素ともに窒素元素を含み、 窒素元 素に対するホウ素元素の原子数比が 1〜 1 0 (ホウ素元素の原子数/窒素元 素の原子数 = 1〜 1 0 ) であると、 電気伝導性と電池用炭素質導電材の表面 不活性の両特性バランスが保たれるため好ましい。
[0023] 上記本実施の形態に係る電池用炭素質導電材を、 リチウムイオン二次電池 の正極に配合し、 耐電圧が 4 . 2 Vを超えるものは、 高エネルギー密度化さ れたリチウムイオン二次電池として好適である。
ここで、 耐電圧とは、 電池として使用可能な最大電圧をいい、 走査速度 5 m V /m i nでの C V測定において、 3〜 5 Vの範囲で電流値を測定すると きの立ち上がり (変曲点) により定まる電圧値をいう。
[0024] また、 本実施の形態に係る電池は、 上記本実施の形態に係る電池用炭素質 導電材を電池の正極または負極に配合したものであり、 上記電池用炭素質導 電材の効果を好適に得ることができる。
[0025] つぎに、 上記本実施の形態に係る電池用炭素質導電材を好適に製造するこ とができる電池用炭素質導電材の製造方法について説明する。
[0026] 電池用炭素質導電材の製造方法は、 カーボンブラックにホウ素、 酸化ホウ 素や炭化ホウ素等の適宜のホウ素源を配合し、 好ましくは誘導加熱して、 1
5 0 0〜2 0 0 0 °Cで焼成するものである。
電気炉等、 他の形式の炉を用いて焼成する方法を排除するものではないが 、 誘導加熱炉を用いて誘導加熱することがより好ましく、 これにより、 短時 間で効率的にホウ素をカーボンブラックの表面に被覆反応させることができ る。 また、 カーボンブラックを適度の黒鉛化率の炭素材とすることができる 上記の特性を有する電池用炭素質導電材は、 前記した本実施の形態に係る 電池用炭素質導電材の効果をより好適に得ることができる。
[0027] 誘導加熱の際に印加する電流の周波数は特に限定されるものではなく、 い わゆる低周波から高周波に至る広範囲の周波数の交流電流を使用することが できる。 なかでも 1 0000 H z以下の周波数の電流を印加することがより 好適である。 電力の印加開始から 1 0分以内、 より好適には 8分以内に、 1 850°Cを超えるまで力一ポンプラックの温度が上昇するような条件で加熱 することが好ましい。 誘導加熱方法は、 反応熱を用いて自己燃焼合成が可能 であるため短時間でより効果的に反応が進行する。
[0028] 誘導加熱の際の雰囲気は限定するものではない。 大気 (空気) 中の反応が コスト的に安価であるため好ましいが、 カーボンブラック表面の活性を制御 する場合は、 アルゴンや窒素を適当量反応系内に流して電池用炭素質導電材 の (ホウ素: B) / (窒素: N) 比率を調整することが有効である。
実施例
[0029] 実施例および比較例を挙げて、 本発明をさらに説明する。 なお、 本発明は
、 以下に説明する実施例に限定されるものではない。
[0030] まず、 実施例中で用いる、 各種の分析方法、 評価方法について説明する。
( 1 ) D B P吸収量
J I S K62 1 7の 9項 「D B P吸収量」 の A法に規定された方法によ つて測定して、 D B P吸収量 (m l /1 00 g) を得る。
(2) 粉末抵抗
直径 30mm、 高さ 3 Ommで、 側面が絶縁材であり、 上面と下面に銅製 の電極がついた円筒容器を用意する。 はじめに容器中には何も入れない状態 で、 口一ドセル付きの加圧装置で、 ゆっくりと 200 k gまで加重をかけた ときの抵抗値と容器の高さを計測し、 それぞれゼロ点とする。 つぎに、 円筒 容器中に導電助剤 (電池用炭素質導電材) を約 2 g充填し、 ロードセル付き の加圧装置で、 ゆっくりと 200 k gまで加重をかけたときの抵抗値と容器 の高さを計測する。 導電助剤の体積と抵抗値から得られる値を粉末抵抗値 ( m Ω c m) とす 。
(3) 元素分析
窒素分析は以下の分析方法および測定機器で行う。
分析方法: J I S-M-881 3 石炭およびコークス類の元素分析方 法
使用機器: F LAS H E A 1 1 1 2 T h e r mo F i n n i g a n社製
金属およびホウ素の分析は以下の分析方法および測定機器で行う。
測定方法:誘導結合プラズマ発光分光分析 ( I C P-O E S)
使用機器: L i b e r t y l l—RL VAR I AN社製
(4) CV測定
(評価電極 (正極) の調製)
導電助剤と、 結着剤としてポリフッ化ビニリデン (PVD F) とを、 4/ 1の割合で配合し、 評価電極用合剤とした。 このとき、 評価電極用合剤に分 散溶媒として N—メチルピロリ ドン (NMP) を添加し、 混練したスラリー を厚さ約 2 O mのアルミニウム箔の片面に均一に塗布し、 乾燥させた後、 プレスすることでシ一ト電極を得た。 得られたシ一ト電極はコインセルに合 うサイズに形取り、 評価電極とした。
(対極 (負極) および電解液の調製)
対極には金属リチウム、 セパレ一タにはポリプロピレン多孔質フィルムを 用いた。 これらも評価電極と同様にコインセルに合うサイズに形取った。 ま た、 電解液として、 エチレン力一ポネートとジメチルカ一ポネートの 1 : 1 混合有機溶媒に 6フッ化リン酸リチウムを 1モル/リツトル溶解した非水電 解液 (1 M_L i P F6 (EC : DMC) ) を用いてコインセル (CR20 32) を作成し、 CV評価用セルとした。
(CV測定)
以下の機器を用い、 上記 CV評価用セルを走査速度 5mV/m i nで、 3 V〜5 Vの範囲で酸化■還元電位を走査して電流値を測定する。
使用機器: S I 1 280 B S o l a r t r o n社製
(5) 耐電圧
上記 C V測定の際の電流値の立ち上がり位置における電圧値であり、 C V 測定チャート中、 変曲点により定まる値である。
[0032] (実施例 1 )
出発原料 (基材炭素) として、 新日化カーボン株式会社製 「ニテロン #3 350 (ニテロンは商標) 」 を使用した。 力一ポンプラック 99質量%と、 ホウ素粉末 1質量%の混合物を外径 1 20mm、 内径 1 00mm、 高さ 80 mmの円筒状力一ポンルツポ中に、 厚さ 5mm、 直径 1 00 mmの力一ポン 製の円板でルツポの上下に蓋をするようにして充填し、 このルツポを中周波 誘導炉中に設置し、 21 50 H z、 40 kWの電力を 5分間印加した。 この とき、 雰囲気制御は行わず、 大気中で行った。 得られた導電助剤 (電池用炭 素質導電材) の物性を表 1に、 CV測定結果を図 1に示す。 以下の、 他の実 施例についても同様である。

出発原料として新日化力一ボン株式会社製 「ニテロン #3350」 99. 5質量%と、 ホウ素粉末 0. 5質量%の混合物を使用した以外は実施例 1 と 同様に実施して導電助剤を得た。

出発原料として新日化力一ボン株式会社製 「ニテロン #3350」 97質 量%と、 ホウ素粉末 3質量%の混合物を使用した以外は実施例 1 と同様に実 施して導電助剤を得た。
[0035] (実施例 4)
出発原料として新日化カーボン株式会社製 「HTC#20」 を使用し、 当 該カーボンブラック 99質量%と、 ホウ素粉末 1質量%の混合物を使用した 以外は実施例 1 と同様に実施して導電助剤を得た。
[0036] (実施例 5)
出発原料として新日化力一ボン株式会社製 「ニテロン #4 1 0」 を使用し 、 当該カーボンブラック 99質量%と、 ホウ素粉末 1質量%の混合物を使用 した以外は実施例 1 と同様に実施して導電助剤を得た。
[0037] (実施例 6)
出発原料として、 新日化力一ボン株式会社製 「ニテロン #3350」 を使 用し、 当該カーボンブラック 99質量%と、 ホウ素粉末 1質量%の混合物を 使用し、 内径 5mmの磁性管を通して A rを 1 00 c c/m i nでルツポ内 に流した以外は実施例 1 と同様に実施して導電助剤を得た。
[0038] (実施例 7 )
出発原料として、 新日化力一ボン株式会社製 「ニテロン #3350」 を使 用し、 当該カーボンブラック 99質量%と、 ホウ素粉末 1質量%の混合物を 使用し、 内径 5 mmの磁性管を通して窒素を 1 O O c c/m i nでルツポ内 に流した以外は実施例 1 と同様に実施して導電助剤を得た。
[0039] (実施例 8)
出発原料として、 粉状アセチレンブラック (AB) を使用し、 当該ァセチ レンブラック 97質量%と、 酸化ホウ素粉末 3質量%の混合物を使用した以 外は実施例 1 と同様に実施して導電助剤を得た。 得られた導電助剤の物性を 表 1に、 C V測定結果を図 2に示す。

実施例 1〜 3、 6および 7で使用した 「ニテロン # 3350」 未処理品 ( ホウ素粉末を配合していないカーボンブラック基材) を導電助剤としたとき の物性を表 2に、 CV測定結果を図 1に示す。 以下の他の比較例についても同 様である。

実施例 4および 5で使用した 「H T C#20」 未処理品および 「ニテロン # 4 1 0」 未処理品をそれぞれ導電助剤とした。

出発原料として新日化力一ボン株式会社製 「ニテロン # 3 3 5 0」 を用い
、 当該カーボンブラック 9 0質量%と、 ホウ素粉末 1 0質量%の混合物を使 用した以外は実施例 1 と同様に実施して導電助剤を得た。
[0044] 実施例 1〜 8の導電助剤を用いた評価セルは、 比較例 1〜 3に示す導電助 剤を用いた評価セルと比較して、 C V測定による酸化電位の立ち上がりが 0
. 2〜0 . 5 V高くなつていることが明らかになった。 このとき、 いずれの 実施例においても粉末抵抗値は未処理品 (ホウ素を配合していないカーボン ブラック基材) よりも低くなる傾向があり、 また、 D B P吸収量は未処理品 に比べて大きく変化していないことが分かる。
[0045] また、 実施例 1〜3を比較すると、 ホウ素の添加量によって B / N比率が変 わり、 それに伴って C V測定による酸化電位の立ち上がり電圧も高くなる傾 向であることが分かる。
[0046] また、 実施例 1、 4、 5を比較すると、 力一ポンプラックの形状に関わら ず、 どれも同じように C V測定による酸化電位の立ち上がり電圧が高くなつ ていることが分かる。
[0047] また、 実施例 1、 6、 7を比較すると、 誘導加熱するルツポ内の雰囲気を 制御すること、 つまり導電助剤の B / N比率に対応して、 C V測定による酸 化電位の立ち上がりが変化していることが分かる。
[0048] また、 比較例 4は、 一般的に電池用の導電助剤として使用されているァセ チレンブラックであるが、 C V測定による酸化電位の立ち上がりは、 4 . 2 Vで新日化カーボン株式会社製の力一ポンプラック群 (比較例 1〜3 ) と同 じであることが分かる。 これに対して、 アセチレンブラックにホウ素粉末を 配合して処理した実施例 8では、 他の実施例と同様に、 C V測定による酸化 電位の立ち上がり電圧が高くなつていることが分かる。
[0049] また、 比較例 5は、 ホウ素を過剰に添加したものであるが、 D B P吸収量 の値からも分かるように、 力一ボンブラックのストラクチャ一が維持されて おらず、 粉末抵抗値も上昇してしまうことが分かる。
[0050] 以上の結果から、 本実施の形態に係る導電助剤 (電池用炭素質導電材) は 、 炭素基材としての力一ポンプラックの導電性とストラクチャ一を維持しつ つ、 高い電圧領域において電解液と反応しないと考えられるため、 高電圧タ イブの電池用導電助剤として好適である。 特に、 高電圧タイプリチウムィォ ン二次電池用導電助剤として好適である。

Claims

請求の範囲
[1 ] 電池の正極または負極に配合して用いられる電池用炭素質導電材において 表面が金属化合物またはホウ素化合物で被覆された炭素基材であることを 特徴とする電池用炭素質導電材。
[2] 前記炭素基材がカーボンブラックであることを特徴とする請求項 1記載の 電池用炭素質導電材。
[3] ホウ素元素とともに窒素元素を含み、 窒素元素に対するホウ素元素の原子 数比が 1〜 1 0であることを特徴とする請求項 1記載の電池用炭素質導電材
[4] 1 5 0 0〜2 0 0 0 °Cで焼成されてなることを特徴とする請求項 1記載の 電池用炭素質導電材。
[5] 前記電池がリチウムイオン二次電池であり、 前記表面がホウ素またはホウ 素化合物で被覆されたカーボンブラックが正極に配合されてなり、 耐電圧が 4 . 2 Vを超えることを特徴とする請求項 1記載の電池用炭素質導電材。
[6] 請求項 1〜5のいずれか 1項に記載の電池用炭素質導電材を用いてなるこ とを特徴とする電池。
