Description
TOOL FOR FIXING PEARL NUCLEUS AND METHOD FOR CULTIVATING
BLACK PEARL USING THE SAME
Technical Field
The present invention relates, in general, to tools for fixing pearl nuclei and
methods for cultivating black pearls using the pearl nucleus fixing tools and, more
particularly, to a tool for fixing pearl nuclei and a method for cultivating black pearls using
the pearl nucleus fixing tool, in which the pearl nucleus fixing tools, each comprising a
circular base plate having a pin protruding from the center of a surface thereof, are attached
to the inner surfaces of respective fan-mussels or fixed to respective fan-mussels in a
nucleus implantation step, thus reducing the mortality rate of mother shellfish and
increasing the production of black pearls and work efficiency while culturing the black
pearls, thereby producing black pearls having high added value and high quality in great
quantities.
Background Art
Generally, pearls are well-known jewelry. Particularly, black pearls, which are
produced in very few places, are very scarce in comparison with other pearls, so that the
value of the black pearls is high, and consequently, a variety of techniques for cultivating
black pearls have been proposed.
Pearls are produced as follows. When a foreign substance is introduced into a
live shellfish, the shellfish repeatedly secretes a secretion from its mantle and repeatedly
covers the foreign substance with the secretion for a lengthy period of time to protect itself,
thus forming pearl layers on the foreign substance and producing a pearl.
A pearl cultivation technique using the above-mentioned theory has been proposed
and used, in which a spherically cut pearl nucleus is artificially inserted into the germ
plasm of a shellfish, thus making the shellfish repeatedly form pearl layers on the pearl
nucleus to produce a pearl.
In recent years, a variety of pearl cultivation techniques have been proposed.
Particularly, pearl cultivation techniques using ear shell or sea mussels to produce black
pearls have been proposed.
A conventional black pearl cultivation method comprises the steps of: collecting
the young of shellfish; cultivating mother shellfish; preparing the nucleus implantation by
suppressing the spawning of the shellfish and making the shellfish easily accept the
nucleus implantation; implanting a pearl nucleus into a live shellfish by appropriately
inserting a spherical pearl nucleus into a desired place around the germ plasm, the intestinal
tract or the digestive diverticulum of the live shellfish, and inserting a piece of mantle into the tissue of the pearl nucleus; and hang-cultivating the shellfish to produce pearls, prior to
harvesting and cutting the pearls.
During a procedure for cultivating pearls, it is very important to insert a spherically
cut pearl nucleus into a shellfish without injuring the contractile muscle or the digestive
diverticulum of the shellfish. However, the insertion of the pearl nucleus into the shellfish
without injuring the contractile muscle or the digestive diverticulum of the shellfish is very
difficult. Further, as the pearl layers are formed on the pearl nucleus, the heart or the germ
plasm of the shellfish may suffer from pressure, so that the mortality rate of the shellfish is
increased, and thus the production of pearls is decreased.
FIG 1 illustrates a conventional method for cultivating black pearls using ear shell
101. As shown in the drawing, the conventional method for cultivating the black pearls
using the ear shell comprises a nucleus implantation step, in which a pearl nucleus 102, a
predetermined part of a spherical surface of which has been cut flat, is attached to the inner
surface of a mother shellfish 101 using an adhesive 103. However, the conventional
method for cultivating black pearls is problematic in that the fully grown pearl does not
have a spherical shape, as shown in FIG 2, so that the pearl must be carefully cut and
polished prior to producing an article using the pearl. Thus, the conventional method for
cultivating black pearls reduces work efficiency and production of the pearls, and produces
pearls having low commercial value.
