Definitions
- the present invention relates to a polarization switching liquid crystal element and an image display device such as a projector including the same.
- liquid crystal elements are distributed for display applications. Many of these liquid crystal devices for display use represent halftones that are not displayed in two stages, such as white display or black display, and the viewing angle characteristics required for observation from various angles. Technological development has been undertaken with the goal of improving it.
- a liquid crystal switching element that emits light by selectively rotating a polarization plane of incident light is also known as a liquid crystal element other than a display application.
- This liquid crystal switching element is an element for switching (switching) between two states, black display and white display, when expressed in a display.
- the polarization transmission axis of transmitted linearly polarized light is 90 degrees. Many of them have two actions: turning or not turning.
- a liquid crystal element that operates to switch between these two states is referred to as a polarization switching liquid crystal element.
- the polarization switching liquid crystal element is used for switching, a liquid crystal material and a liquid crystal structure having characteristics different from those of a display application are being studied.
- a requirement for a switching element is a switching speed, and a ferroelectric liquid crystal is selected to increase the switching response speed.
- ferroelectric liquid crystals are impractical because they are unstable and expensive.
- TN (twisted nematic) liquid crystal is known as a stable and inexpensive one.
- TN liquid crystals generally have a slower response speed than ferroelectric liquid crystals, so to achieve a high response speed using TN liquid crystals, it is necessary to reduce the thickness of the liquid crystal (cell gap), for example.
- cell gap the thickness of the liquid crystal
- simply thinning the cell gap results in wavelength dependence in the ability to rotate polarized light.
- combining a phase difference plate is known (for example, refer to Patent Document 1).
- the cost of the components will increase due to the addition of the retardation plate.
- an image display apparatus including a spatial light modulation element such as a transmissive LCD
- a pixel shifting element consisting of a polarization-switching liquid crystal element for selectively rotating polarization by 90 degrees and a birefringent plate that selectively shifts the light according to the direction of polarization.
- a pixel shifting element consisting of a polarization-switching liquid crystal element for selectively rotating polarization by 90 degrees and a birefringent plate that selectively shifts the light according to the direction of polarization. Higher resolution is achieved by synchronizing the shift timing and the image of the spatial light modulator corresponding to the light shift position.
- a polarization switching liquid crystal element used for such a pixel shifting element is advantageous in that it responds at high speed, and therefore, one using a ferroelectric liquid crystal is known (for example, see Patent Document 1). .
- ferroelectric liquid crystal is not practical because its durability is unstable and expensive.
- a color sequential image display device for example, a projector
- This color plane sequential image display device realizes color display by sequentially illuminating one spatial light modulation element with each color of RGB and modulating according to each color information.
- the structure is simpler and it can be realized inexpensively.
- Such color surface sequential type image display devices cause color breakup (color breaking) caused by sequentially illuminating the colors, and therefore are required to increase the display frequency for each color at a higher speed. ing. Therefore, in the case of performing pixel shifting by wobbling for this color surface sequential type image display device, it is made of TN liquid crystal corresponding to the spatial light modulator. High speed is also required for the polarization switching liquid crystal element.
- the high-speed response of this polarization-switching liquid crystal element can be improved to some extent by optimizing the drive timing of the TN liquid crystal. To further improve the wobbling performance, a TN liquid crystal capable of a faster response is required. .

- the liquid crystal be configured so that the phase difference u is 550 nm and indicated by an ellipse in FIG.
- FIG. 3 is a graph showing the transmittance wavelength dependency of the polarization switching liquid crystal element.

- the wavelength is 380 nm to 780 nm
- the ⁇ force is 0.13, 0.165, 0. 218, 0.24, and 0.26 were obtained from equations (1) and (2).
- FIG. 4 is a diagram showing a measurement circuit for the transmittance ⁇ of the polarization switching liquid crystal element.
- Polarized light The ability of the switching liquid crystal device includes the polarization switching speed and the two polarization states that can be switched, that is, the switching state.
- 4 to 6 are diagrams mainly illustrating the switching state.
- the switching state is poor, a state where the polarization does not rotate despite the state where the polarization is rotated by the polarization switching liquid crystal element occurs at the same time. Will occur at the same time, and switching will not be performed accurately.
- the transmissivity T shown in FIG. 2 indicates that the closer the T is to 0 as the switching state, the more ideal the switching is performed on a one-to-zero basis. Shows that only two minutes occur.
- a measurement light source 11 and a light receiving element 12 are arranged with a polarization switching liquid crystal element 1 as an object to be measured in between, and the measurement light source 11 and polarization switching are arranged.
- Polarizers 13a and 13b are arranged between the liquid crystal element 1 and between the polarization switching liquid crystal element 1 and the light receiving element 12 in a parallel-cold state (polarization transmission axes are parallel to each other).
- the measurement light source 11 is driven so as to always emit light by the light source light emission circuit 15, and voltage application to the polarization switching liquid crystal element 1 is turned on / off by the liquid crystal cell drive circuit 17 based on the control of the measurement control circuit 16. Then, it is driven alternately in binary.
- the details are described in FIG.

- the driving state of the polarization switching liquid crystal element 1 is measured as the transmittance while turning on / off the voltage application to the polarization switching liquid crystal element 1 with a powerful configuration.
- the optical operation when measuring the transmittance will be described in detail with reference to FIG.
- the measurement light source 11 is, for example, an LED that emits light of each wavelength of RGB, and transmission of each wavelength of RGB is performed. Measure the rate.
- the polarizing plates 13a and 13b are arranged in parallel-col and the transmittance T is measured.
- these may be arranged in orthogonal-col and measured.
- FIGS. 5 (a) and 5 (b) are diagrams for explaining the transmittance measurement operation of the polarization switching liquid crystal element 1, and FIG. 5 (a) shows that voltage application to the polarization switching liquid crystal element 1 is turned off. FIG. 5 (b) shows a state in which voltage application to the polarization switching liquid crystal element 1 is turned on.
- the light from the measurement light source 11 is polarized light having a polarization transmission axis in the horizontal direction by the polarizing plate 13a. It becomes light and is rotated by 90 ° by the polarization switching liquid crystal element 1 and enters the polarizing plate 13b as the polarization transmission axis in the vertical direction.
- the polarizing plate 13b has a polarization transmission axis in the horizontal direction, there is no transmitted light, and the light beam does not reach the light receiving element 12.
- the light from the measurement light source 11 is polarized in the horizontal direction by the polarizing plate 13a. It becomes polarized light having a transmission axis, and is incident on the polarizing plate 13b while maintaining the polarization transmission axis in the horizontal direction without being rotated by the polarization switching liquid crystal element 1.
- the polarization transmission axis of the polarizing plate 13b is in the horizontal direction, the incident light having the horizontal polarization transmission axis is transmitted as it is, and the light beam reaches the light receiving element 12.
- FIG. 6 shows the drive waveform of the polarization switching liquid crystal element 1 and the output waveform of the light receiving element 12.
- the lower part of Fig. 6 shows the drive waveform for turning on / off the voltage application to the polarization switching liquid crystal element 1, and the upper part shows the output waveform of the light receiving element 12 corresponding to the drive waveform.
- the output voltage value in the state is Vp
- the output voltage value in the off state is Vv.
- V0 indicates the dark current value of the measurement system in a state where the measurement light source 11 is not emitting light.
- V100 indicates the total transmittance of the measurement system.
- the total amount of light passing through the polarization switching liquid crystal element 1 is separated into two polarization components, the vertical direction and the horizontal direction.
- the total light quantity does not change, so the polarizing plates 13a and 13b in Fig. 4 are orthogonal to each other.
- the same measurement as in FIG. 6 is performed, and the value when the voltage application to the polarization switching liquid crystal element 1 is turned on is a value obtained by adding Vp in FIG.
- TN liquid crystal is optically birefringent in a stable state when the voltage application is turned on, so that the birefringence is stable and does not become elliptically polarized, so V100 and Vp are very close to each other. . Further, when the voltage application is turned off, elliptical polarization tends to occur. Therefore, if it is assumed that the polarization switching liquid crystal element 1 is made of TN liquid crystal, it is treated as VlOO ⁇ Vp, and the crosstalk ratio due to elliptically polarized light is expressed as Vp—Vv and Vv—V0. The ratio can be measured.
- the liquid crystal is generally evaluated using the transmittance T, and the state in which the transmittance increases when the voltage application is turned off with the polarizing plates 13a and 13b being orthogonal-cols is normally white.
- the transmittance shown in FIGS. 2 and 3 is measured in a normally black state, and the polarization switching liquid crystal element 1 according to this embodiment can be evaluated in the same manner.
- the reason why 50% is maximized is that the polarizing transmission axis is handled by using a polarizing plate.
- the response speed of the polarization switching liquid crystal element 1 is measured by the measurement circuit shown in FIG. 4, in the case of TN liquid crystal, the response speed when the voltage application is turned off, that is, the output of the light receiving element 12 in FIG.
- the falling response speed Td of 10% from the start of the fall of the voltage from Vp to Vv to the end of the fall becomes 10%.
- FIG. 7 is a graph showing the transmittance wavelength dependency of the polarization switching liquid crystal element measured by the measurement method described in FIGS. 4 to 6.
- the cell gap d is set to 2 ⁇ m
- the polarization switching liquid crystal element is configured by using three kinds of liquid crystals with ⁇ of 0.165, 0.218 and 0.24 as liquid crystal materials.
- the wavelength dependence of each transmittance was measured.
- the measurement light source 11 uses LEDs with RGB wavelengths of 626 ⁇ m, 525 nm, and 470 nm.
- the measurement temperature was 50 ° C.
- ⁇ ⁇ has a temperature characteristic, and thus does not exactly match the calculated value shown in FIG. 3, but the actually measured data shown in FIG. 7 is the calculated value shown in FIG. It can be seen that there is a correlation with the calculated value. Therefore, the configuration of the polarization switching liquid crystal element 1 can be set by the calculated value.
- FIG. 8 is a graph showing the calculation results of the transmittance wavelength dependency of the polarization switching liquid crystal element.
- the cell gap d is 3 m
- the liquid crystal material ⁇ is 0.13, 0.165,
- FIG. 9 is a graph showing the calculation results of the transmittance wavelength dependency of the polarization switching liquid crystal element.
- the cell gap d is 1.
- the phase difference u shifts in a smaller direction.
- the liquid crystal material of ⁇ force ⁇ ). 26 can be used. That is, in this case, if a liquid crystal material with ⁇ 0.252 is used in the calculation, the transmittance ⁇ can be reduced to 0.1 or less over the entire visible light wavelength range.
- FIG. 10 is a schematic configuration diagram showing a first embodiment of an image display device according to the present invention.
- This image display device is a projector that realizes two-point pixel shifting (wobbing) in the horizontal direction by using the polarization switching liquid crystal element 1 according to the present invention described above, and color surface sequential illumination means capable of color surface sequential illumination.
- a bright optical system 23 a pixel shifting optical unit 24 including the polarization switching liquid crystal element 1, a projection optical system 26 for enlarging and projecting light that has passed through the pixel shifting optical unit 24 onto a screen 25, and a spatial light modulation element 22 controls the modulation element drive circuit 27, the liquid crystal cell drive circuit 28 that drives the polarization switching liquid crystal element 1, and the modulation element drive circuit 27 and the liquid crystal cell drive circuit 28 based on the input video signal.
- a pixel shift control circuit 29 a pixel shift control circuit 29.
- the color surface sequential illumination means 21 includes a white lamp 3 la that emits white light, such as an ultra-high pressure mercury lamp, a metal lamp, a ride lamp, and a xenon lamp, and an elliptical reflector 3 that condenses the emitted light at a predetermined point.
- an LED, LD, etc. can be used to control the light emission of each RGB wavelength sequentially.
- the illumination optical system 23 includes a PS conversion element 33 which is a polarization conversion means that efficiently generates a predetermined linearly polarized light as an illumination light force from the color plane sequential illumination means 21, and a polarized light from the PS conversion element 33. It consists of a telecentric system that has an integrator rod 34 that multipoints due to internal reflection, and an illumination lens 35 that illuminates the entire display area of the spatial light modulator 22 by combining the light multipointed by the integrator rod 34. The illumination unevenness caused by the light source 31 is reduced.
- the spatial light modulation element 22 also has, for example, a transmissive LCD force, and its polarization transmission axis is aligned with the polarization direction of the illumination light emitted from the PS conversion element 33 of the illumination optical system 23.
- the spatial light modulator 22 is not limited to a transmissive LCD, but may be a reflective LCD (LCoS) or DMD.
- the pixel shifting optical unit 24 includes the polarization switching liquid crystal element 1 and the birefringent plate 36 according to the present invention.
- the polarization switching liquid crystal element 1 uses TN liquid crystal as the liquid crystal material
- the birefringent plate 36 is made of, for example, quartz (a-SiO 2) or lithium niobate.
- LiNbO 3 LiNbO 3, Rutile (TiO 2), Calcite (CaCo), Chile nitrate (NaNo), YVO, etc.
- the pixel shift control circuit 29 sends an image corresponding to the pixel shift position from the input video signal to the modulation element drive circuit 27 and synchronizes with the sending timing of the liquid crystal cell.
- the image information of the spatial light modulator 22 and the pixel shift position are synchronized to achieve high resolution. Note that, as disclosed in Patent Document 2 above, even if the pixel shift control circuit 29 performs correction processing between fields in consideration of the delay of the response speed of the spatial light modulator 22, it does not matter.
- the transmissive LCD is used as the spatial light modulation element 22 and the illumination optical system 23 is a telecentric system
- the light emitted from the spatial light modulation element 22 is dependent. Even if it includes rays, it becomes 30 degrees or less.
- the polarization switching liquid crystal element 1 is configured so that the passing light beam is at an angle of 30 degrees or less with respect to the optical axis, and is disposed in the vicinity of the spatial light modulation element 22 so that the spatial light modulation element 22 The effect of characteristics due to the oblique incidence of is reduced.
- the spatial light modulation element 22 having a transmissive LCD force used in the present embodiment will be described in detail.
- the spatial light modulation element 22 that can perform display switching over the entire screen at the same time is used.
- the spatial light modulator 22 capable of collective display (modulation) possesses the entire screen for the recording capacitor of each pixel, and enables the display capacitor of each pixel to operate at once.
- a conventional image display device uses a spatial light modulator that performs line-sequential scanning as disclosed in Patent Document 1 above.
- This spatial light modulator that scans line-sequentially has a recording capacitor of several pixels, one line, or several lines, which is advantageous in terms of cost, but is trying to increase resolution (wobbing) by shifting pixels.
- a plurality of polarization switching liquid crystal elements of the pixel shifting unit are polarized, and the polarization switching liquid crystal elements are sequentially arranged in accordance with the line-sequential scanning timing of the spatial light modulation element. Need to drive.
- the spatial light modulator 22 capable of collective display (modulation) is used as in this embodiment, there is no need to polarize a plurality of polarization switching liquid crystal elements, so that the polarization switching liquid crystal element 1 It becomes easy to adjust the drive timing.
- the polarization switching liquid crystal element is arranged at a distance from the spatial light modulation element.
- the polarization switching liquid crystal element Since the correlation between the line sequential scanning and the polarization driving timing of the polarization switching liquid crystal element is optically mixed, the polarization switching liquid crystal element must be arranged in the vicinity of the spatial light modulation element, and the degree of freedom in arrangement Disappears.
- the polarization switching liquid crystal element can be polarized even if it is arranged at a distance from the spatial light modulator 22. Since there is no need to polarize the switching liquid crystal element, the degree of freedom of the arrangement position of the polarization switching liquid crystal element can be increased.
- Such a degree of freedom of arrangement is particularly effective when a reflective LCD (L CoS) is used as the spatial light modulation element. That is, in the case of a reflective LCD, a polarization beam splitter (PBS) that separates incident light and modulated light is generally arranged in front of the reflective LCD, so that a pixel is placed in the optical path of the modulated light separated by PBS. This is because when the shift unit is arranged, the distance to the pixel shift unit becomes longer for the reflective LCD force.
- PBS polarization beam splitter
- FIGS. 11 (a) and 11 (b) when voltage application to the polarization switching liquid crystal element 1 is turned on and off and the two-point pixel shift (wobbling) in the horizontal direction is performed, Deterioration of the switching state that occurs in the polarization switching liquid crystal element 1 (see FIGS. 4 to 6), that is, crosstalk caused by elliptical polarization will be described.
- Fig. 11 (a) shows the case where the voltage application to the polarization switching liquid crystal element 1 is off
- Fig. 11 (b) shows the case where the voltage application to the polarization switching liquid crystal element 1 is on! / Speak.
- the spatial light modulator 22 modulates polarized light having a vertical polarization transmission axis and emits polarized light having a horizontal polarization transmission axis. It has become like this.
- the polarized light incident on the polarization switching liquid crystal element 1 is ideally 90 degrees polarization direction. Is turned into polarized light having a polarization transmission axis in the vertical direction, and reaches the pixel position A without being shifted in the horizontal direction (ray shift) by the birefringent plate 36.
- the polarized light emitted from the polarization switching liquid crystal element 1 is elliptical. It becomes. Therefore, in the polarized light emitted from the polarization switching liquid crystal element 1, a horizontal polarization component and a vertical polarization component appear as solid components, and the horizontal polarization component is shifted by the birefringence plate 36 by pixels. At the same time, the vertical polarization component reaches the pixel position A without being shifted by the birefringent plate 36 and the voltage application to the polarization switching liquid crystal element 1 is turned off. Therefore, light reaches both pixel positions A and B.
- the polarized light emitted from the polarization switching liquid crystal element 1 is ellipticalized, and information to be displayed at the pixel position A is originally displayed at both the pixel positions A and B according to the ratio of the elliptically polarized light.
- the resolution is degraded. This phenomenon is called crosstalk here.
- the polarized light emitted from the polarization switching liquid crystal element 1 is elliptical, so that the pixel is originally shifted in the horizontal right direction.
- Information displayed at position B is displayed at both pixel positions B and A according to the proportion of elliptically polarized light, and crosstalk occurs.
- a TN liquid crystal is used as the polarization switching liquid crystal element 1
- the degree of ellipticalization of polarized light differs between when the voltage application is turned off and when it is turned on. growing.
- the above crosstalk has a wavelength dependency, when using illumination light of a single wavelength, it may be optimized at the wavelength used, but the entire visible region (or a predetermined RGB color) may be used.
- the (color) illumination light is used, in addition to the deterioration in resolution, a change in each color occurs in the degree of occurrence of crosstalk, and a false color described later is generated.
- FIG. 12 is a diagram for explaining ideal pixel shifting without crosstalk.
- white is displayed at the pixel position A and black is displayed at the pixel position B.
- the pixel position A and the pixel position B are shown separately for convenience of explanation, but the actual pixel shape partially overlaps the pixel position A and the pixel position B by increasing the pixel aperture ratio. It will be a thing.
- crosstalk in which each color of RGB differs as the polarization switching liquid crystal element 1 becomes elliptically polarized for example, as shown in FIG. 13, R is 50:50, G is 80:20, and B is 90.
- R is 50:50
- G is 80:20
- B is 90.
- the image displayed at pixel position A becomes white with blue tint S due to the weak red color
- the layer displayed at pixel position B is As the red color becomes stronger, the phenomenon of black with strong reddishness will occur, and the phenomenon of false colors with colors will occur, even though the original black-and-white display is desired.
- the difference in the amount of crosstalk between the RGB colors has an effect, resulting in unintended colors.
- FIG. 14 is a time chart in the case where the image display device shown in FIG.
- the spatial light modulator 22 performs sequential RGB display four times during one frame.
- the illumination time of each color light of RGB is determined by considering the white balance according to the spectral characteristics of the light source 31.
- the color wheel 32 is configured to illuminate in the order of R> B> G.
- the frequency of 1 frame is set to be 30 Hz in 4 fields when one period of RGB is 1 field, and the 2-point pixel shift is performed in each field, and the 1st field and In the third field, voltage application to polarization switching liquid crystal element 1 is turned off and displayed at pixel position A, and in the second and fourth fields, voltage application to polarization switching liquid crystal element 1 is turned on and displayed at pixel position B. It is like that. If the input signal is interlaced, it can be configured to display different data every 60Hz for 1, 2 fields and 3, 4 fields.
- the polarization switching liquid crystal element 1 When a TN liquid crystal is used, the polarization switching liquid crystal element 1 is turned off when the voltage application is turned on.
- the response speed differs depending on the time, especially during the response period when the on-force is turned off, since crosstalk is likely to occur during the polarization switching period and false colors are likely to occur.
- the drive timing of the polarization switching liquid crystal element 1 is switched from on to off at an earlier time with respect to the timing of shifting to the pixel position B force and pixel position A in consideration of the response speed.
- the polarization switching liquid crystal element in the period of B1 light and R2 light between the first field and the second field.
- voltage application to 1 When voltage application to 1 is turned on from off, polarization rotation starts.
- light rays reach both pixel position A and pixel position B, resulting in crosstalk.
- the response characteristic of the polarization switching liquid crystal element 1 is a factor, crosstalk occurs in the R and B colors, and the G color is not affected. For this reason, the pixel information (including white balance) at each pixel position is different from the target, and false colors are generated.
- the above effect is not limited to the polarization switching liquid crystal element using TN liquid crystal as in the present embodiment, but the polarization switching liquid crystal element using ferroelectric liquid crystal is used for the pixel shifting element. Thus, the same can be obtained in the case of batch display in the field sequential manner.
- FIG. 15 is a schematic configuration diagram showing a second embodiment of the image display apparatus according to the present invention.
- the image display device according to the present embodiment is the same as the image display device according to the first embodiment except that four sets of pixel shifting optical units 24a and 24b are used in the horizontal and vertical directions. It is designed to perform a life.
- the pixel shifting optical units 24a and 24b include the polarization switching liquid crystal elements la and lb according to the present invention and the birefringent plates 36a and 36b, respectively, and the birefringent plates 36a and 36b are optically shifted. Arrange so that the directions are orthogonal. Since other configurations are the same as those in the first embodiment, the same reference numerals are given to elements that perform the same operation, and the description thereof is omitted, and the operation of shifting four-point pixels is also known. The description is omitted here.
- FIG. 16 is a schematic configuration diagram showing a third embodiment of the image display apparatus according to the present invention.
- the reflective spatial light modulator 22 since the reflective spatial light modulator 22 is used, the optical path between the spatial modulator 22 and the polarization switching liquid crystal element la constituting the optical unit 24a is long.
- the spatial light modulator 22 since the spatial light modulator 22 is a general display type and it is not necessary to polarize the polarization switching liquid crystal element la, the degree of freedom of the arrangement position of the polarization switching liquid crystal element la is increased as described above. Can do.
- FIG. 17 is a schematic configuration diagram showing a fourth embodiment of the image display apparatus according to the present invention.
- This embodiment is a three-plate type image display device using three spatial light modulators 22R, 22G, and 22B each having a transmissive LCD force.
- the polarization switching liquid crystal according to the present invention Two sets of pixel shifting optical units 24a and 24b having elements la and lb are used to shift pixels by four points in the horizontal and vertical directions.
- the illumination light from the white light source 51 is multipointed by the fly-eye lens 52 to level the illumination unevenness on the spatial light modulators 22R, 22G, 22B, and further from the multi-PBS. It is converted into predetermined polarized light by the PS conversion element 53.
- the illumination light emitted from the PS conversion element 53 is separated into R light by a dichroic mirror 54, and further separated into G light and B light by a dichroic mirror 55.
- the light is incident on the light modulation element 22R and modulated, the G light is incident on the spatial light modulation element 22G and modulated, and the B light is incident on the spatial light modulation element 22B via the mirrors 57 and 58 and modulated.
- the pixel shifting optical units 24a and 24b are configured using the polarization switching liquid crystal elements la and lb according to the present invention described in FIGS. A small three-plate type image display device can be realized.
- FIG. 18 shows a schematic configuration of 3D glasses using the polarization switching liquid crystal element according to the present invention.
- This 3D glasses uses a polarization switching liquid crystal element as a shirt, and the left and right lens portions of the 3D megane 61 have polarization switching liquid crystal elements 1L, 1L, 1R is provided, polarizing plates 62L and 62R having a vertical polarization transmission axis on the outer side (front side), and polarizing plates 63R and 63L having a horizontal polarization transmission axis on the inner side (back side) , And the polarization switching liquid crystal elements 1L and 1R are alternately driven by the liquid crystal cell driving circuit 64, so that the polarization switching liquid crystal elements 1L and 1R are alternately transmissive, that is, the left eye is transmissive and the right eye is non-transmissive. The left eye is opaque and the right eye is transparent.
- the liquid crystal cell is synchronized with the display switching timing between the left-eye image and the right-eye image.
- the driving circuit 64 By alternately driving the polarization switching liquid crystal elements 1L and 1R by the driving circuit 64, it is possible to observe a 3D image.
- the switching speed between the liquid crystal shirt for the left eye and the liquid crystal shirt for the right eye is important. It is desired that the shatter responds at high speed. For this purpose, it is effective to reduce the thickness of the liquid crystal cell as described above, but wavelength dependency occurs in the degree of light shielding (transmittance) by the shirter. For this reason, depending on the color, the left and right images are not shielded so that they can be separated effectively. For example, the image for the left eye leaks to the right eye (this can also be called crosstalk), and the stereoscopic effect in 3D observation is impaired. It will be.
- the polarization-switching liquid crystal element according to the present invention described in FIGS. 1 to 9 is used as the left and right liquid crystal shirts. Therefore, the wavelength dependence of the light blocking ratio as the liquid crystal shirts. The response speed of the liquid crystal shatter can be increased while minimizing the leakage phenomenon (crosstalk) between the left and right images due to the image, and the reduction in stereoscopic effect in 3D observation can be improved.
- the present invention is not limited to the above-described embodiment, and many variations or modifications are possible.
- the polarization switching liquid crystal element according to the present invention is not limited to a projector or 3D glasses, but is an image display device using a micro display such as an electronic viewfinder (EVF) or a head-mounted display (HM D), or an optical display device.
- EMF electronic viewfinder

u= 2 X Δ η Χ ά/ λ (1)
Τ= (ΐ/2) Χ δίη2{ π (l +u2) 1/2/2}/ (l +u2) (2)
