- the relative refractive index difference between the core portion of an optical fiber composed of a core portion doped with impurities and a clad portion having a fine structure and the clad portion having no fine structure (second clad portion) is almost the same as SMF.
- the relative refractive index difference ⁇ 1 is 0.3 to 0.39%.
- the optical fiber of the present embodiment increases the MFD by reducing the relative refractive index difference ⁇ 1.
- the relative refractive index difference ⁇ 1 is made smaller than before, the refractive index difference between the core and the clad is very large, so the optical confinement in the core is strong, and the bending loss due to bending of the optical fiber is also very high. Can be small.
- the relative refractive index difference ⁇ 1 is defined by the following equation. n and n are the most
- the large refractive index and the refractive index of the second cladding part are identical to each other.
- the core portion can be easily found at the time of fusion, so that it is possible to avoid the occurrence of connection loss due to misalignment. Further, since the germanium diffuses in the connecting portion at the time of fusion splicing with the single-mode fiber, the connection loss can be reduced.
- the microstructure region exceeds 20%, the strength of the fiber deteriorates. Therefore, by setting it to 20% or less, the strength of the optical fiber itself as glass can be maintained. wear.
- the cross-sectional area of the microstructure exceeds 20%, when the optical fiber is drawn, the glass portion in the vicinity of the microstructure inside the optical fiber is broken by the meniscus portion drawn from the optical fiber preform to the optical fiber. This is not preferable because a large stress is applied to the wire and the possibility of disconnection increases.
- An optical fiber according to an embodiment of the present invention has a microstructure that is rotationally symmetrical twice with respect to the central axis of the optical fiber.
- anisotropy occurs in the refractive index distribution in the X and Y directions in the cross section of the optical fiber. For this reason, anisotropy occurs between the X-axis direction and the Y-axis direction, and the effect of maintaining the polarization plane of the guided light occurs.
- the term “two-fold rotational symmetry” as used herein refers to those that are symmetrical only with respect to two-fold rotation, and does not include 4-fold rotational symmetry, 6-fold rotational symmetry, and the like.
- An optical fiber according to an embodiment of the present invention has a microstructure that is six-fold rotationally symmetric with respect to the central axis of the optical fiber.

- An optical fiber according to an embodiment of the present invention has a microstructure that is rotationally symmetric four times with respect to the central axis of the optical fiber.
- the polarization mode dispersion can be reduced because the refractive index distributions in the X and Y directions are equal in the cross section of the optical fiber.
- each microstructure is arranged on two or more different identical circumferences with respect to the central axis of the optical fiber.
- the refractive index can be freely changed by the arrangement pattern of the fine structure in the radial direction from the optical fiber central axis.
- a method for doping germanium (Ge) and phosphorus (P) into the core for example, a VAD (Vapor-phase Axial D mark osition) method can be mentioned.
- the dope amount can be finely adjusted.
- the homogeneous medium of the second cladding part is pure silica glass or silica glass to which fluorine is added.
- the medium other than the fine structure portion of the first cladding portion is the same as the second cladding portion, and the refractive indexes of the first cladding and the second cladding when the first cladding portion does not have the fine structure portion are the same.
- the cladding is made of pure silica glass or silica added with fluorine. By being composed of force glass, a refractive index difference can be provided for the core portion.
- the fine structure is a hole
- the average refractive index of the first cladding portion can be greatly reduced. Also, if it is a hole, it can be easily drilled in the longitudinal direction of the optical fiber preform using, for example, an ultrasonic drill, etc. Compared to the operation of inserting a liquid or solid having a refractive index different from that of silica glass. Can be manufactured at low cost.

- Fiber example 11 Optical fiber 10 with MFD of about 7-8 ⁇ m at 1550 nm wavelength shown in Fig. 1 and SMF optical fiber for connection with SMF with MFD at 1550 nm of 10.4 ⁇ m
- the optical fiber (compliant with ITU standard G.652; hereinafter referred to as unconnected optical fiber 60) was connected by the following three methods. Then, connection loss due to light having a wavelength of 1550 nm at these connection portions was measured.
- FIG. 6 is a longitudinal sectional view showing an optical fiber connection method according to connection example 1.
- the refractive index matching agent 13 is filled in the gap at the end of the three holes of the optical fiber 10.
- the optical fiber 10 filled with the refractive index matching agent 13 and the optical fiber 60 to be connected were abutted and connected so that the central axes of the core portions 1 and 61 coincided.
- the refractive index matching agent 13 is a highly viscous grease having a refractive index of about 1.44 with respect to light having a wavelength of 1550 nm.
- the refractive index matching agent 13 By filling the refractive index matching agent 13 in the holes 3 of the optical fiber 10 in this way, the refractive index of the first cladding portion 2 is changed to the refractive index of the second cladding portion 4 at the end of the optical fiber 10. Approaches the rate. As a result, the MFD of the optical fiber 10 is expanded and the MFD of the optical fiber 60 to be connected is Approaching the value. In addition, since the refractive index of the cladding is almost uniform at the fiber connection end, connection loss due to Fresnel reflection can be suppressed. Here, when the connection loss at the end of the optical fiber was measured, it was 0.1 dB or less.
- FIG. 7 is a longitudinal sectional view showing an optical fiber connection method according to connection example 2.

- connection example 16 The closed portion 16 is formed when the air holes 3 are crushed, and the refractive index of the first cladding portion 2 at the end of the optical fiber 10 becomes substantially equal to the refractive index of the second cladding portion 4. Therefore, the same effect as in connection example 1 was obtained.
- the connection loss is somewhat reduced compared to the butt connection without any processing at the end of the optical fiber.
- the connection loss was measured in the same way as the end of the optical fiber connection in connection example 2 above, it was 0.1 dB or less.
- connection example 2 the end of the optical fiber 10 was crushed and connected to the optical fiber for connection 60 by fusion.
- the fusion conditions when the discharge is suddenly performed with a strong power, the vacancies expand and sometimes burst, resulting in large cavities and defects in the fusion part. For this reason, in this connection example, the discharge time for weakening the discharge intensity was set to be long, and the pores were gradually crushed for fusion.
- connection loss has become even smaller. Similar to the above connection example, the connection loss at the fiber connection end in connection example 3 was measured and found to be 0.05 dB or less.
- FIG. 8 is a system diagram showing an example in which the optical fiber according to the present embodiment is used as a waveguide.
- the optical fiber 10 shown in [Fiber Example 1] is the connection part at both the front and rear ends.
- G.652 trunk optical fibers 70 and 70 are connected to Cl and C2, respectively. This use case assumes that the obstacle 100 must bend at two right angles in the system.
- the two bent parts A and B are each bent to a curvature radius of 7.5 mm.
- the bending loss generated in the bent portions A and B is very small. In this case, The loss was less than 0.1 dB. Also, if the MFD of the optical fiber 10 is larger than that of a conventional bending-resistant optical fiber having a hole, the loss occurring at one connection portion is 0.1 dB or less. Considering the above, the transmission loss in the trunk line total could be kept very small compared to the case where only trunk line fiber was laid.
- the optical fiber and waveguide according to the present invention are useful for optical fiber cables of a system in which a bent portion is formed when being routed, and are particularly useful for offices, homes, and apartments. It is optimal for optical fiber cables such as drop optical fiber cables, indoor optical fiber cables, and optical fiber cables for in-home wiring that are used when introducing optical fiber cables.
- the optical fiber and the waveguide according to the present invention reduce the connection loss that occurs when connecting to the SMF and the bending loss that occurs when a bent portion having a small curvature radius is formed.
- various optical fiber cables such as drop optical fiber cables, indoor optical fiber cables, and optical fiber cables for home use, which are used when introducing optical fiber cables into offices, homes or condominiums, etc. And it is suitable for the waveguide formed using this.

△ = { (n -n ) /n } X 100 % (3)
core clad core
